The music of Doctor Who has brought chills, caused tears and inspired original works – not to mention raised a few eyebrows over the years. From the on-screen work of the show’s composers to novelty pop singles, trance epics, live proms, a surprising Glastonbury cameo, and the Master’s recent taste for dance-floor fillers, we track the music moments it’s hard to forget.
Across the Universe
There’s no denying that The Beatles’ Doctor Who cameo is a strange and somewhat gratuitous moment – but one that came very close to being so much more than that. The First Doctor has just acquired a “Time-Space Visualiser”, meaning that he can view what’s going on anywhere in all of time and space as if they’re watching the telly.
As far as the Doctor’s gadgets go, this is just a teensy bit overpowered, but anyway: after channel-hopping and spying...

Think back to June 2010. The air was filled with the sound of World Cup vuvuzelas and Dizzee Rascal. UK cinemas were set to welcome Hot Tub Time Machine. The shine had only recently worn off everybody’s crush on Nick Clegg. And beavers were being bred wild in Scotland for the first time in 400 years. Mad times. Mad times.
Into those mad times, came a mad man with a box. In April 2010, Matt Smith made his debut as Doctor Who’s Eleventh Doctor, with new showrunner Steven Moffat in tow. There were cracks in the universe and Rory dying and Vincent Van Gogh and James Cordon and a Pandorica. The Tardis exploded. A lot. Then just 24 hours after Eleven restored the universe in Series 5 finale ‘The Big Bang’, he also closed Glastonbury Festival.
It was an unusual moment, and a great one. Matt Smith certainly looked like he was enjoying himself.

Peaky Blinders series 2 will feature a Pj Harvey version of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' 'Red Right Hand'.
Star of the BBC drama Cillian Murphy and the show's music producer Flood announced details of the show's soundtrack on BBC Radio 6 Music today (September 24).
Flood spoke about reworking Harvey's music for the show, saying: "I was trying to do something very different, which is to deconstruct all of Polly's [Pj Harvey's] old material and then weave it through in the underscore to make it very cutting edge, very post-modern, and set about creating music for the historical period but that was also fresh."
The soundtrack to Peaky Blinders series 2 will also feature music by Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), Johnny Cash and Arctic Monkeys.
Peaky Blinders returns to BBC Two on October 2 at 9pm.
Digital Spy named the soundtrack to the show's first series as one of the ten coolest on TV last year.

Digital Spy presents Doctor Who Week - seven days of special features celebrating the return of the world's favourite sci-fi series, and the arrival of a brand new Doctor - on August 23.
You don't need a classic theme for a great TV show, but as programmes from M*A*S*H and The X-Files to The Wire and Buffy The Vampire Slayer have shown, it certainly doesn't hurt.
Below, we take a look at the history of the revolutionary Doctor Who theme and also explore how the show has intertwined with the wider world of pop.
'Doctor Who Theme' [Original Version] - The Radiophonic Workshop (1963)
"Did I write that?" Ron Grainer apparently asked on hearing the completed version of the original theme crafted by the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop. "Most of it," Delia Derbyshire kindly replied.
Grainer attempted to get Derbyshire a co-writing credit but the policy of the time was to keep Workshop members anonymous,...

Happy Birthday Matt Smith!
The Doctor Who star turns 31 today (October 28) so here's 11 reasons why we love the 11th Doctor - from bow-ties to beheadings to Breaking Bad...
Matt Smith loves Doctor Who just as much as you do...
Throughout his tenure on the series, Smith has always spoken passionately about his deep love for Who, telling The Guardian in 2011: "You're never bound by logic, or time, or genre, or space, or location, which is what makes it such an ingenious televisual conceit."
Matt Smith has excellent taste...
Smith counts record-breaking zombie hit The Walking Dead and Emmy favourite Breaking Bad ("I'd love the Doctor to meet Heisenberg") among his favourite television shows.
His music taste is also excellent, naming prog rock legends Radiohead as his favourite band in 2010: "I admire the musicianship, I admire the soul that goes into it, and the execution and the work, the preparation.

While filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn has done much in the way of leaving his mark on American cinema with 2011’s Ryan Gosling-starring “Drive” and has the highly anticipated “Only God Forgives” on the horizon, it’s a remake of his first feature that’s receiving a lot of attention at the moment – and hailing from an entirely different filmmaker. We got our first look at the Luis Prieto-helmed “Pusher” remake a few months back in the shape of a few photos and a visually compelling trailer, and now we get a listen to the film’s soundtrack courtesy of Empire. Brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll have joined forces under their musical pseudonym Orbital to provide what sounds akin to executive producer Refn’s own “Drive” film score on steroids, offering a pulse-pounding electronic music landscape that should provide the film with some great needle drops. You can stream the entire score below,...

The film that launched Nicolas Winding Refn's career, taut drug thriller Pusher, is back in on our screens next week. The new version, produced by Refn and starring an excellent Richard Coyle, comes clad in new noughties threads and boosts some pumping new tunes, courtesy of dance titans Orbital. We begged and pleaded - and we can be pretty persuasive* - until the nice people at Vertigo Films let us share the Hartnoll brothers' score with you. When the year's top soundtracks are sized up, this one will be in the shake-up - probably clutching a glowstick and doing the robot. Have a listen and share your impressions in the usual place."We were mixing our album [Wonky] at the time we were asked," remembers Paul Hartnoll when Empire talked to the duo about the score's unusual origins. "We were commuting up and down to London to Flood Studio in Willesden to mix it,...

Orbital have announced further details for their upcoming studio album Wonky. The LP will be the pioneering electronic duo's first in eight years, since 2004's The Blue Album. Paul and Phil Hartnoll split shortly after the release of the record, but reunited for a series of live shows in 2009. Wonky will be released on April 1 and will feature collaborations with Zola Jesus and Lady Leshurr. On recording the album, Paul Hartnoll said: "When I'm writing music, if it doesn't move you emotionally, it's not working. It has to give me butterflies. I have to make myself cry in the studio." The duo explained that they have tested out their new material during various live (more)...

Prolific composer Michael Kamen has written memorable themes for action movies such as Highlander and Die Hard. He also wrote songs for Bryan Adams, but we won’t hold that against him...
A prolific composer throughout his career up until his death seven years ago, Michael Kamen earned himself a reputation as a master of action movie scores through working on two of the genre's biggest franchises, amongst other notable projects.
He also showed a propensity for collaboration in both his composing career and other musical projects, with him working with the likes of Eric Clapton, Metallica, Queen, Orbital and David Bowie, to name but a few.
Twice Oscar-nominated for Best Original Song for Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman From Don Juan De Marco and (Everything I Do) I Do It For You from Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, both of which were sung by Bryan Adams, Kamen...

Quick, what’s the scariest horror film score out there? I’m sure a couple of no-brainers came to mind, and a few of you probably thought of something wholly original. Thanks to the Cinemagic channel on Sirius Xm, we have an official list to choose from. There are a few shocking inclusions, and a couple of omissions, one that I, myself, deem glaring.
