The England vs Wales World Cup match had a surprise cameo in the form of Chesney Hawkes.
Singer Hawkes performed his 1991 No 1 hit single “I Am the One and Only” during halftime at the match in Qatar.
After what was an underwhelming first half for both sides, those in attendance quipped that Hawkes was the standout performer of the evening.
The Independent’s chief football writer Miguel Delany tweeted: “Chesney Hawkes is playing ‘The One and Only’ at half-time in England vs Wales. I have no idea why this is happening.”
“Chesney Hawkes singing ‘I Am The One Only’ at halftime might just be the highlight so far... yes, it’s been that bad,” football writer John Cross added.
Daily Mail’s northern football correspondent, Dominic King, praised: “One verse and one chorus in and Chesney Hawkes is already the best performer of the night.”

The Welsh national anthem has become a talking point around the world since Wales’s team began competing in their first World Cup since 1958.
Wales’s stirring anthem is called “Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau”, which translates to “Old Land of My Fathers” in English.
When the Welsh team, headed up by captain Gareth Bale, and 3,000 Welsh supporters belted out the anthem at the country’s opening match against USA on Monday 21 November, it gave goosebumps to footballs fans around the globe.
Singer-songwriter Billy Bragg tweeted at the time: “Well Wales have won the national anthem singing contest. Their players looked proud to belt out their anthem while the US team looked faintly embarrassed to be singing in public.”
This year marks the first time the anthem has been sung at the tournament. The last time Wales were at a World Cup, they sang “God Save the Queen”.

Liam Gallagher deleted a series of offensive tweets shared after England’s men’s football team drew 0-0 with USA in their World Cup group stage match on Friday.
The former Oasis frontman received immediate backlash for the tweets, several of which contained ableist slurs.
“[Gareth] Southgate you absolutely m*** you play [Phil] Foden,” one tweet shared from the musician’s account read, in a dig directed at the England manager.
The term used in the tweet derives from the word “mongoloid”, a now defunct and offensive way of describing people with Down’s Syndrome.
Another tweet read: “F*** you woke spastics.” Spastic is another well-known ableist pejorative deriving from the now defunct description of those with cerebral palsy.
“Even that scouse div with the s*** dreds get him on,” he shared in another tweet, seemingly targeting Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.
All the tweets were quickly deleted apart from one, which read,...

Director Duncan Jones’ Warcraft was mildly received by critics and audiences (except for China) who found spectacle in the film but some problems with the story. And while it has its share of supporters and fans, including a devout Jamie Lee Curtis, and is technically the highest grossing video game adaptation of all time (even though it’s losing money), perhaps all it needed to get over with audiences was a jaunty tune? Last night, the director tweeted out a link to a version of “One And Only” that Chesney Hawkes recorded specifically for the film, but was ultimately not used.
Now, without further ado...

Reflecting on the film’s meandering path to release, director Duncan Jones has revealed he cut close to 40 minutes of footage from Warcraft: The Beginning.
Speaking in an interview with The Daily Beast, the Moon and Source Code filmmaker went in-depth on the creative process behind bringing the fantastical realms of Azeroth and Draenor to the silver screen. In fact, buried within that cut footage was a nod to Jones’ past work and, specifically, Chesney Hawkes’ power ballad, “I am the One and Only.”
“If you know Moon or Source Code, there’s this very sweet, very talented guy named Chesney Hawks who wrote this really, really big hit in Britain called ‘I Am The One And Only.’ I used it as an alarm clock in Moon, and a ring tone in Source Code—and I actually got him to do a version as a bard in Warcraft.

The term ‘one-hit wonder’ is often attributed to the music industry and a performer whose success is derived from a single, signature track that completely consumes any future work and deprives it of the chance to proposer.
Think Chesney Hawkes’ appropriately titled ‘The One and Only’, Soft Cell with their synth pop classic “Tainted Love” and even Vanilla Ice’s immortal ‘Ice Ice Baby’. They are just a few examples of the artists and songs that have hit the mainstream popularity spotlight and subsequently plateau for the remainder of their career.
A similar phenomenon exists in football that we like to call the one-season wonder. Players who set the world alight for a single campaign before dropping back through the portal into obscurity never to be seen or heard from again.
Here at Newcastle United we’ve experienced our fair share of Cheney Hawkes...

Moon (2009) is a love letter to the science fiction movies that director Duncan Jones grew up watching. He stated his intention was, “to create something which felt comfortable within that canon of those science fiction films from the sort of late seventies to the early eighties”*. Jones’ eerie story of a moon base worker who discovers uncomfortable truths about himself during a three year solo mission certainly achieved that. One of the central reasons the film succeeds, attests blogger Dallas King is its subtly readable costume design by Jane Petrie.
Petrie’s only previous science fiction credit was in the costume department for Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (1999). With Moon, however, she avoided the fantastical elements of sci-fi to create a look that felt more science fact rather than fiction, while still evoking the spirit of genre classics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Solaris (1972), Outland (1981) and...

Matthew Wolfenden is the bookmakers' favourite to triumph on this weekend's Dancing on Ice finale. The Emmerdale star has been near the top of the judges' scores throughout the series and won immunity in yesterday's semi-final thanks to his performances on the ice. Wolfenden is currently the 4/7 odds-on favourite to win the series, while former favourite Jorgie Porter has drifted to 2/1 after ending up in last night's skate-off. Heidi Range has said that she was "distraught" at the possibility of having to quit Dancing on Ice over an early injury. The Sugababes singer was told that she may have sustained a broken wrist in an "awkward fall" prior to the launch of the ITV contest, potentially forcing her out of the competition like original partner Sylvain Longchambon and co-stars Keith Chegwin and Chesney Hawkes. "They took me straight to hospital, where I was sobbing as they told me they thought it was broken," she told The Mirror. "I was distraught at the thought of having to quit the show, but luckily it wasn't broken. "The bone had just come out of the joint. The physio is like a magician and she managed to twist it in a funny way and shove it back in. "It's become so frequent I've got used to being in pain. (more)...

The 'One and Only' singer suffered a severe ankle sprain and a fractured fibula while practising basic steps with dance partner Jodeyne Higgins. The competition's physio informed Hawkes that he would no longer be able to take part in the competition. Chico, who shot to fame during the 2005 series of The X Factor, wished Hawkes a quick recovery. Chico said: "Whilst I'm really excited about being part of the new series of Dancing on Ice it's not necessarily in the best of circumstances. I wish Chesney all the best and a speedy recovery. I will not just be skating for myself I will be skating for Chesney as well and do him proud." Hawkes added: "I am gutted not to be taking part in Dancing (more)...

Dancing on Ice's Chemmy Alcott has claimed that fellow contestant Chesney Hawkes is downbeat about his injury. Chesney Hawkes has given his broken leg some "bling" after having to quit 'Dancing On Ice'. The 'One and Only' hitmaker - who was forced to bow out of the celebrity skating competition after injuring himself during training - explained he has covered his leg cast in blue glitter so not to miss out on the flashy costumes worn on the ITV1 show. Speaking about his injury, he said: "It is very disappointing, yes. I mean I only just found out that it was broken and we go live on Sunday. I was supposed to be skating on Sunday (08.01.12). Dallas icon Charlene Tilton, British singer Heidi Range and pop star Chesney Hawkes are among the celebrities who have suffered nasty injuries in rehearsals for U.K. TV contest Dancing On Ice.
Tilton, who will compete against stars including former child actor Corey Feldman on the show, ripped a shoulder muscle during a practise session, while Sugababes star Range was taken to hospital earlier this week (beg02Jan12).
The singer, whose professional ice skating partner Sylvain Longchambon dropped out of the series after rupturing a bicep, needed medical attention after dislocating a rib and damaging bones in her wrist.
She tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "I had a bone come out of my wrist and it happened to my rib as well. With the rib I was doing a flying cartwheel and I heard it pop - the physio popped it back in for me. I heard it when I did my wrist, too.
"I had to go to the hospital and I was sobbing because I thought I’d be off the show. They thought it was broken but, thank God, it wasn’t."
The One and Only hitmaker Hawkes also sustained a severe leg and ankle injury, leading to concerns he may have to miss the programme's launch this weekend (07-08Jan12).
Other contestants, including British soap star Laila Morse and actress Jennifer Ellison, have also suffered injuries in the run up to the new series.

We all know the importance of the director, they are the heart and soul of a film (in layman terms… we don’t want to go into the auteur theory here) and few have careers that flourish decade after decade, yet the Spielberg’s and the Scorsese’s are still going strong.

Saturday Night Entertainment television is very horrible.
Don’t get me wrong. I do not mean in terms of the content, because I love it when Phillip Schofield gets all ‘Prime time’ on me. I merely mean in terms of the pressures they set upon society. Am I Right, Cruel World?
Oh us. The unsuspecting general public, who just like something to watch whilst we sip from mugs. Because sometimes mug sipping is just not enough. Sometimes the mugs are merely empty. (This isn’t a metaphor for the depravity of life, it was a mug-based analysis only.) But nowadays, turning on the television is like reawakening a rubbish school bully who gives your trousers a ‘look’. So many demands and threats are suddenly thrust upon us:
Got to Dance.
Strictly come Dancing.
Do You think you can dance?
and
How Do you solve a problem like Maria?...

Danish actress Brigitte Nielsen took part in a bizarre stunt for a new TV game show which saw her strapped to a knife-thrower's board and forced to sing to raise cash for charity.
The Rocky IV star joined other celebrities including The One and Only hitmaker Chesney Hawkes for fundraising programme Sing If You Can, which will be broadcast on British network ITV on Saturday.
In the show, stars attempt to perform a track while taking on a challenge - and Nielsen's task involves trying to sing while being spun on a circular knife-thrower's board.
The programme will raise money for The Teenage Cancer Trust.

Duncan Jones film, Source Code, open s this weekend and according to Rotten Tomatoes, it’s the best reviewed studio movie of the year.
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright, the film has some great twists and turns. And while you may think you know what’s going to happen (or will you?), you’ll still be in for a great ride.
I loved Duncan’s last film, Moon, and while this may have some shades to that – loneliness and isolation – the film has so many more colors and that’s due to the screenwriter, Ben Ripley.
I talked to both Duncan and Ben at SXSW in a roundtable interview where they talked about casting, explaining the Source Code and how they put Jeffrey Wright‘s knee injury into the film!
This interview is very spoiler heavy so I didn’t include a lot of what we talked about.

One celebrity from the losing team will be dropped into a water tank, but the victorious team is given the chance to win money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Duncan Jones’ second film comes to us with a wave of expectation, carrying with it the hopes that the British director can follow up his award scooping debut Moon with something better, something to cement his reputation as one of the most exciting talents of this new century.
Source Code, released on the 1st of April against Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, does indeed make good on the promise shown, though the film lacks the soul of Moon it is a very strong and engaging thriller with its head, if not its heart, in the right place.

The Eighties Supergroup returned to the Let’s Dance For Comic Relief stage this evening.
We knew from the off that Toyah Willcox, Clare Grogan, Chesney Hawkes and Limahl stand no chance of winning the series, not when up against the hilarious Noel Fielding and side splitting Ade Edmondson but still they were worth a giggle or two.
The four stars strutted around – we couldn’t even call it dancing – to Greased Lightning and the best thing we could say is that Chesney Hawkes still has a nice tight bum!
Afterwards judge Rufus Hound said:
It was lovely. When I heard it was an eighties supergroup I hoped we would have Brucie out here doing the lambada with Nelson Mandela. It wasn’t to be.

Toyah Willcox, Clare Grogan, Chesney Hawkes and Limah closed tonight’s Let’s Dance For Comic Relief.
The former pop stars were performing as ‘Eighties super group’, which is weird because Hawkes biggest hit ‘The One And Only’ was released in 1991.
Tonight the four almost legends danced to Greased Lightening, with Chesney looking like the perfect T Bird.
Toyah was quite cringe-worthy and wish she had done a lot less thrusting and gyrating….as it was a little vomit inducing.
After the routine judge John Bishop said: “It was like seeing a dream in front of me. This is like I was 16 and someone had transported me to the best party.”
Felix Dexter added: “It was fantastic, coming from a group with a combined age of 211 it was brilliant.”
While Jo Brand raved: “Absolutely fab.”

James Cameron oversees Sanctum 3D, a film that offers a stark warning as to why you shouldn't go diving in caves. But is it any good?
While watching Australian cave-thriller, Sanctum, I could tell that writing about it was going to be a bit of a tricky task. You see, I'm aware of my ethical and professional obligation to provide an objective review both to Den Of Geek and, of course, to you, the readers.
On the other hand, I'm also aware that after the multi-billion dollar success of Avatar, Sanctum executive producer, James Cameron, has the kind of money and power that, were I to say something he didn't like, he could have me quickly and brutally killed within minutes, possibly at the hands of a giant forklift robot operated by the man himself.
So, with that in mind, I'm now going to say some nice things about Sanctum.

The eight best soundtrack moments from this year's movies
Cat People – David Bowie
Inglourious Basterds
The context was totally wrong, but Bowie's goth-like 1980s hit somehow worked perfectly with Mélanie Laurent's preparations for her Nazi showdown. Edith Piaf just wouldn't have cut it.
Toop Toop – Cassius
Il Divo
A beautifully slick montage of Mafia assassinations set to spiky French guitar funk.
Times They Are A Changin' – Bob Dylan
Watchmen
The only bit of the film they didn't lift from the comic turned out to be the best: a dazzling title sequence of snapshots from an alternate history, all set to Dylan's plaintive croaking.
Night Shift – Commodores
35 Shots Of Rum
The mellow warmth of the Commodores loosens the inhibitions of lonely Parisians, in the key scene from Claire Denis's gorgeous drama.
Life's a bitch – Nas
Fish tank
Not the most uplifting farewell tune for Mia's dance-off with her mum,...
