- Trying to leave a legacy on his tattered Presidency, Hayes attempted to clean up the notoriously corrupt Port of New York (which controlled 70% of the country's commercial income) by removing those who were responsible for the bribes and kickbacks. One of the individuals that Hayes removed was Chester A. Arthur who would become President of the United States within three years.
- Although he was a Republican, Hayes chose not to play by the rules of party politics during his term. He appointed men based on merit and experience rather than personal favors. This infuriated his constituents especially when some of the men the he appointed had been Confederate soldiers.
- Inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in 1992 (inaugural class).
- He is extremely popular in Paraguay due to his intervention in the Paraguayan War of 1864-1870 when he sides with the nation against Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay and prevented Paraguay from losing a large part of it's territory to Argentina and further attacks from the other nations.
- Won the U.S. Presidential election by the narrowest margin of any President. He lost the popular vote to opponent Samuel Tilden, but won by just one electoral vote.
