In perhaps the most meta, mind-bending spy thriller in recent memory — especially if you have amnesia — the new film “Argylle” places reclusive fiction writer Elly Conway in the center of an international espionage caper. When it seems that her novels are needed to help decode the workings of some of the world’s best spies, the cat-loving author finds herself in danger… but is there more to Elly than meets the eye? Find out on Friday, April 12 when the film arrives on Apple TV+. The star-studded film was at the center of a lot of speculation earlier this year, now it’s your turn to decode the mystery. After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, the “Jason vs. Tina” battle in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, the “all hell breaks loose” sequence from the start of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, and the opening sequence of Pitch Black, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series with a look at a moment from the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it Here) – which isn’t just getting a 4K release for its 30 anniversary. It’s also getting a remake.

While the Marvel Universe continues to chug along and James Gunn attempts to resuscitate the DC universe into something worth watching, we will yet again go back to the world of graphic novels for our inspiration on book vs movie. It’s really a very untapped realm as there are so many good horror comics out there, many without adaptations yet. The ones that have been adapted are very fun and interesting. Today is the mostly forgotten early 2000s movie From Hell (watch it Here), which is based on the stunning and epic graphic novel from famed wizard and all-around cranky dude Alan Moore. Like many graphic novels, the journey to page and then screen was a long and arduous one. It is based on the very real killings in Whitechapel that were later attributed to Jack the Ripper. While both have a lot of truths to them along with...

Yesterday, we saw the first images of what Bill Skarsgard of the It films is going to look like as goth rocker Eric Draven in director Rupert Sanders’ (Snow White and the Huntsman) remake of the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it Here). There weren’t a lot of positive reactions, with many fans comparing Skarsgard’s look – which Sanders said was a mixture of his own look in the ’90s, “when we were squat-raving in London,” with modern influences like Post Malone and Lil Peep – to Jared Leto’s poorly-received version of The Joker in Suicide Squad. One person who took to social media to blast the look of the new Eric Draven was Alex Proyas, who directed the ’94 version of The Crow.
Sharing one of the images, Proyas said, “Eric Draven’s having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks.” In the comments, he continued to mock the look:...

We recently heard that Lionsgate has picked up the distribution rights to the reboot of the classic film The Crow (get it Here), which was released by Miramax back in 1994. Before Miramax acquired it, The Crow had originally been set up at Paramount. They decided to let go of it due to the controversy surrounding the on-set death of star Brandon Lee and the amount of violence in the film. So when Paramount acquired Miramax back in 2020, gaining the rights to The Crow in the process, it was like the film had gone full circle. It came back to Paramount. Recently, cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, mentioned a 4K restoration of The Crow would be on the Paramount Plus streaming service soon. While it hasn’t hit streaming yet, Blu-Ray.com announced that the 4K Blu-ray is set to come out on May 7th to mark the film’s 30th anniversary.

No, it’s not Taylor Swift. Instead, the authors of Penguin’s Argylle novel are revealed to be Terry Hayes and Tammy Cohen.
Forming part of a surprisingly elaborate marketing campaign, early January 2024 saw the release of a novel called Argylle, billed as an “explosive spy thriller that inspired the new Matthew Vaughn film”.
Rather than a traditional tie-in – one of those books that essentially takes a screenplay and turns it into page-turning prose – the book was instead a standalone thriller based on the antics of the spy played by Henry Cavill in the film. In a further post-modern twist, the Argylle novel is credited to Elly Conway, the character played in the movie by Bryce Dallas Howard.
This begged the question: if Conway’s a fictional character, who really wrote the novel? Much speculation ensued, including the quite batty theory that Argylle had been written by Taylor Swift – a...

There's something to be said for keeping a movie's marketing simple. Matthew Vaughn's new action-comedy spy thriller "Argylle" opened in theaters this week, after more than two years of Vaughn claiming that the movie was based on an upcoming novel by mysterious first-time author Elly Conway. What little buzz there was around this movie generally revolved around Henry Cavill's flat-top hairstyle, complaints about the cat CGI, and speculation that "Elly Conway" might be Taylor Swift.
Those hooks weren't able to drum up more than $6.5 million on opening day, including Thursday previews, putting "Argylle" on track for a $16.5 million opening weekend (per Deadline). That's the same amount that "The Beekeeper" made with the relatively straightforward pitch of "Jason Statham is a beekeeper who kills people with honey and also with guns."
Determining a break-even point for "Argylle" is tricky. Like Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" and Ridley Scott's "Napoleon,...

In addition to her storied musical career, the late rock legend Tina Turner may have the best run of movie character names of all time. She only played someone else on screen three times in her life, but each occasion was memorable (and memorably named). From The Acid Queen in Ken Russell's "Tommy" to Aunty Entity in "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" to The Mayor in "Last Action Hero," Turner's short-lived cinematic career was defined by roles that felt like they were crafted just for her — with stylish names to match.
Turner's biggest film role came via George Miller, who really did craft the role of the third "Mad Max" film's villain around Turner. According to a retrospective written for NME in honor of the film's 35th anniversary, Miller and co-writer Terry Hayes made up the role for Turner after Miller was captivated by her after seeing her in a British TV interview.

There's no such thing as a bad "Mad Max" film, because even the so-called "weakest" film of the franchise still boasts one of the series' best characters. In "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome," Tina Turner plays Aunty Entity, the ruthless, determined ruler of Bartertown. She's the one who forces Max (Mel Gibson) into the Thunderdome for a bit of a gladiator-esque battle and is undoubtedly the strongest part of this admittedly pacing-challenged film. During a 1985 interview with George Miller for Time Out (via Multiglom), he spoke at length about not just the backstory of Aunty Entity, but also the decision to cast Turner in the role.
At one point, it sounds like Miller contemplated making the film without Max Rockatansky at the focus by telling a "Mad Max"-esque origin story about how she came to power. "We wanted to have the sense that before she built Bartertown, she was a genuine hero,...

Exclusive….Developing…We’re hearing that Paramount Players creative executives Matt Dines and Ali Bell are departing the label that they arrived to in late August 2017. While these two key execs are leaving, the Paramount Players will remain in operation under the oversight of Paramount Motion Pictures Group president Wyck Godfrey.
Word is that Dines is heading to Jonah Hill’s production company and will become a producing partner there. Hill recently produced Richard Jewell; executive produced and starred in the Netflix limited series Maniac; and directed, wrote and produced the 2018 A24 movie Mid90s. At the same time, I understand Bell is heading to Andy Samberg’s label Party Over Here.
While at Paramount Players, Dines worked on such features as Nobody’s Fool and Playing With Fire. Bell during her tenure oversaw What Men Want, Dora and the Lost City of Gold and the upcoming Monster Problems which has a February 12, 2021 release date.

We still don’t know what exactly to expect from James Gray’s sci-fi drama “Ad Astra” when it premieres September 20, but we do know what Gray’s lining up next. Variety reports that the “Two Lovers” and “The Immigrant” filmmaker is set to write and direct “Armageddon Time,” an autobiographical drama about growing up in mid-1980s Queens, New York. But wait, there’s more: “Fred Trump, the Queens-based real estate developer who sired Donald Trump, and the current president will appear as characters, although the events will unfold long before there was ever a Trump in the White House.”
Rt Features, the production company responsible for “Ad Astra,” is also working with Gray on this next venture. “It’s a personal story for James,” the company’s Rodrigo Teixeira told Variety. “You have the whole world of the Trumps dealing with that school and the students who go to that school.

One of the greatest American directors working today, James Gray’s classical style is a welcome reprieve in a Hollywood that’s increasingly less interested in mid-budget adult dramas. Following The Lost City of Z, he’s currently in post-production on his Brad Pitt-led sci-fi film Ad Astra, due for a qualifying run later this year and January release, and now a new project has been announced.
In a directorial upgrade for the ages, THR reports that Gray is set to replace Matthew Vaughn on the spy thriller I Am Pilgrim. Based on the Terry Hayes novel, the MGM project follows a former head of an espionage unit in the U.S., who now lives an anonymous life under the radar, and is pulled back into a mission that finds him facing a terrorist.
A first for Gray, the studio hopes this first film will kick off a franchise.

Exclusive: MGM has just closed a deal for James Gray to direct I Am Pilgrim, an adaptation of the espionage novel trilogy by Terry Hayes. MGM has been mobilizing this one for several years, and it is high priority for the studio best known for 007. Hayes, whose credits include the early Road Warrior films, as well as Dead Calm, Payback and From Hell, has adapted the novel. Lloyd Braun is producing.
The intention is for Gray to make it his next film after Ad Astra, the sci-fi epic he just finished that stars Brad Pitt for New Regency and Fox. MGM, which recently went through the exit of Gary Barber, is doubling down on building its TV and film production and its Epix service, and this is being eyed as an important piece of the film slate being assembled under Jonathan Glickman.
Pilgrim is the code name for a man who doesn’t exist.

The long awaited black and chrome version of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road finally has a release date. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing the Mad Max: Fury Road Black & Chrome Edition on December 6th in a two-film collection that also includes the theatrical version of the film. It will also include a special introduction by Miller describing his vision for the film. I'm excited about watching this version of the film because Miller says it's the best version of it. When previously talking about his black and white vision of the film, he said:

Taron Egerton starts shooting Robin Hood: Origins in February. Unless there's a clash with Kingsman: The Secret Service 2...
One of the surprise hits of the year has been director Matthew Vaughn’s big screen comic book movie, Kingsman: The Secret Service. The fact that it was a strong film wasn’t a surprise, rather that it took over $410m at the global box office. Very few saw that coming.
Unsurprisingly, 20th Century Fox soon after began to press for a sequel. Furthermore, Vaughn himself confirmed that he was going to make one. He’s thus been working on the screenplay for the next film with Jane Goldman.
Vaughn had said that Kingsman 2 wouldn’t be his next movie, and that he was likely to schedule another project in-between. However, the crammed schedule of Kingsman star Taron Egerton may be leading to a change of plan.

The impressive novel I Am Pilgrim was penned by one-time screenwriter Terry Hayes. Hayes had worked on the likes of Dead Calm, Payback and Mad Max 2, and his debut novel - a thriller, centred around a man with the codename Pilgrim - proved to be a massive success. Hayes is currently working on a follow-up book.
He's also, though, working on the screenplay for I Am Pilgrim, as the novel gets adapted for the big screen. And we now learn that it's a movie project on the radar of Matthew Vaughn.

Fresh off Kingsman: The Secret Service, it seems Matthew Vaughn will be staying in the spy genre for a bit longer with his next film. No, not Kingsman: The Secret Service 2 (that’s still coming, don’t worry), but I Am Pilgrim, an adaption of the 2014 best selling debut novel from The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Dead Calm, and Payback screenwriter Terry Hayes (you can listen to our interview with Hayes about the book here). Following a veteran spy, codenamed Pilgrim, called out of retirement to tackle a cunning terrorist, production is slated to begin next year. I Am Pilgrim will see Hayes on screen writing duties, and with him currently working on a follow-up novel, we could see be seeing the beginnings of a new franchise. And there’s no better person than Vaughn to potentially kick it off. Of the five movies he has directed, three...

Matthew Vaughn is making another spy movie! Hot off finding strong commercial success with Kingsman: The Secret Service earlier this year, the popular British director is set to helm a big screen adaptation of Terry Hayes' espionage thriller I Am Pilgrim. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he will also produce the film, based on a script adapted by Hayes himself. Apparently, MGM view this as a potential franchise, and production will begin in 2016. Per THR, the story follows “Pilgrim,” code name for a man who doesn’t exist. The adopted son of a wealthy American family, he once headed up a secret espionage unit for U.S. intelligence. Now in anonymous retirement, he is called upon to lend his expertise to an unusual investigation but ultimately becomes caught in a terrifying race against time to save America from a cunning terrorist. But what does this mean for Kingsman 2?...

Even though he’s busy developing a sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service, that’s not preventing Matthew Vaughn from delving into other spy-related affairs, as MGM announced this morning that Vaughn will produce and direct the espionage thriller I Am Pilgrim.
Based on the novel by Terry Hayes, the story tracks the adopted son of a wealthy American family, who previously spearheaded a covert espionage operation for the Us government. Brought out of his luxurious retirement lifestyle, he surrenders his anonymity to help on an unusual case that involves a heinous terrorist plot. With the entire Us at stake, it’s a race against the clock to stop the bad guys before America is obliterated.
Vaughn’s name brings a certain cache to the project, and with plenty of high-profile screenwriting credits to his name, it’s not unsurprising that Hayes is attached to pen the script. Pilgrim is...

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Written by Terry Hayes and George Miller
Directed by George Miller and George Ogilvie
Australia, 1985
An undetermined amount of time has elapsed since Max’s (Mel Gibson) previous high stakes adventure. Now with a few more grey hairs, he traverses the treacherous Outback with camels and a stagecoach, looking for who knows what. His long walk is interrupted by a renegade pilot (Bruce Spence), who flies low, thus blowing up sand and obscuring Max’s field of vision. During the interruption the pilot and his son steal the wagon and make way for the only nearest outpost: Batertown. Batertown is governed by the megalomaniacal Auntie Entity (Tina Turner), although her authority is frequently challenged by a duo of characters that run the town’s fuel compound where methanol is extracted from pig feces. They are Master Blaster, or rather, Master (Angelo Rossito), a little man that...

Mad Max 2 (aka The Road Warrior)
Written by Terry Hayes, George Miller and Brian Hannant
Directed by George Miller
Australia, 1981
Mad Max 2, or as it is more commonly recognized in North America, The Road Warrior (upon its release not enough people had actually seen Mad Max, therefore prompting the title change) , begins with a brief montage of archival documentary footage and scenes from the first film that set up the world viewers are about to launch into. Society has now collapsed. When resources became scarce, the people revolted. The institutions tried to retain order, but it was too late. What was hinted at in 1979’s Mad Max is now a harsh reality, with the titular character (Mel Gibson) driving the dusty Australian roads in search for food and resources for his amazing car, the Ford Falcon. This time his efforts at scavenging are temporarily thwarted by the pilot...

The best way to describe Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is to call it a misguided attempt at a dark, post-apocalyptic adaptation of Peter Pan with a side of "Lord of the Flies". If that sounds interesting that's because Thunderdome is somewhat compelling, the plotting is just all wrong. Director George Miller, this time returning to his Mad Max franchise with co-director George Ogilvie, seems intent on telling two stories at once, neither feeling as if they are of the same story. That said, once each jarring and coincidental switch in the plot is made, the result provides avenues that would be otherwise interesting to explore on their own as Miller was clearly searching for a story arc unlike the first two films when he sat down to write the screenplay with The Road Warrior co-writer Terry Hayes. Similar to the opening of its predecessor, the film begins with the titular Max (Mel Gibson) being chased,...

Seeing George Miller walk out on stage to introduce The Road Warrior made all my pains go away. A medical doctor turned filmmaker, Miller may not have magical healing powers, but his movies have the capacity to make audiences forget about their troubles, at least for the length of the running time, and that certainly applied to me. In his introduction, Miller recalled that he and his writing partner (Terry Hayes) began working on the screenplay in San Francisco, at Christmastime in 1980, continued working on the drive to Los Angeles, continued working on the plane home to Australia, and then finished it up. A year after they started on the script, the movie opened in theaters in Australia, which is indeed remarkable. Miller also...
