Seattle’s Bumbershoot festival, held Aug. 30-Sept. 1, at Seattle Center, will have a little something for everyone this year. Headliners include veteran rockers Elvis Costello & The Imposters and The Replacements, rap acts J. Cole and Wu-Tang Clan, and relative newcomers Foster the People and The Head and The Heart. Also on the diverse bill are Panic! At the Disco, Schoolboy Q, Capital Cities, Neon Trees, The Afghan Whigs, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Mission of Burma, Los Lobos, Bootsy Collins, The Both, Walk the Moon, The Dismemberment Plan, Real Estate, and about 75 other acts. Of particular interest are Big Star’s Third, a collection of artists who come together to play the rock band’s third album, a cult favorite known as “Third” and “Sister Lovers.” The collective usually includes Big Star drummer Jody Stephens as well as others either affiliated with Big Star or acolytes. Here’s what the...

It’s been a decade since the last entry in the Scream trilogy hit theatres, and now we wait to see how they can squeeze more blood from the proverbial stone. This time, Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is a writer of a self-help book, who while on tour promoting it ends up in Woodsboro in time for the 15th anniversary of the original murders. And of course, with her reunion with friends and family comes the inevitable return of Ghostface, who is taking his or her cues from horror remakes. The murders are similar to the original film’s murders, but with a 21st-century twist (one could write a dissertation on the irony of Wes Craven making such commentary on horror remakes when he has handed several of his own properties over for remaking, but that’s for another day).

With the release of their official debut album, one rock band is picking up steam.
Trainwreck, the brainchild of Tenacious D guitarist Kyle Gass, has announced plans to go on tour to promote the large-scale release of "The Wreckoning," their official studio album. The album, first available for download on music sites on December 1 and currently available for purchase on the band's Web site, will be released on March 2.
Like Tenacious D, Gass's band with actor/musician Jack Black, Trainwreck's musical repertoire provides both a hard rock beat and alternately comedic and serious lyrics. However, the band provides a different tone in their sound, with a slant toward the Southern and progressive subgenres of rock. Gass has described the group's music as "a cornucopia of rock and a five-headed hydra of pleasure." The roots for the band go back as far as 1997, and aside from opening for bands such as...

In each Fangoria Musick Chopping Block, we'll be taking a look at a trio of recent releases.
In this installment, Fango grabs the latest releases from Otep and Skinlab, along with the Halloween II motion picture soundtrack. What do these titles have in common? Should these albums be required listening? Find out below!
Otep - Smash The Control Machine
Victory Records
Much can be said about Otep as both a band and a movement. On their latest offering and first released through Chicago's Victory Records, the band returns to form with a brutal set that recalls their 2002 breakthrough, Sevas Tra - for about half of the album. The 60-minute, 13-song set is best when the tempo is fast (mostly the first half) along with Serv Asat (track 11). The mellower fare is dark, but will be an acquired taste. Tracks such as Kisses And Kerosene dip into spoken word territory and...

“Alien Pigs Tore the Shirt From My Breasts!” Big bosoms, daisy duke shorts, alien pigs & a couple of bumbling rednecks. Sound familiar? Search your mind; yep it’s right there, lurking on the edge of your brain, squirming around in your vapid trivia space of weirdness. Could it be Redneck Rampage? The 1997 first person shooter game that sported some wicked tunes by Mojo Nixon, Reverend Horton Heat, Beat farmers and a few other class acts from the Psychobilly artists of the day? Well it sure looks like it took page from that shiny little 1997 gem, but we’re talking Comic Books in this column not Video games so if you thought Redneck Rampage kicked some alien ass you haven’t seen anything yet. Fire up your imagination and take a seat because when you sleep tonight the tight bottomed nubile girl gracing these pages is going to have you firing...

Hard rock icons Motörhead have announced five more dates to their 2009 U.S. tour that will see the band making new stops in Dallas, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and St. Louis. Having completed a highly successful tour of the U.S. last year with Judas Priest and Heaven & Hell, Motörhead continue to answer the global demand for their live assault in 2009. The band enjoyed a successful sold-out tour of South America in April, and is currently in Europe headlining some of the summer's biggest festivals. They will hit the U.S. in August for a real rock'n'roll bill with The Reverend Horton Heat and Nashville Pussy. Motörhead also plans to head back to Europe, performing throughout the...

Chicago – How do you judge a game like “Guitar Hero: Smash Hits”? Like a greatest hits collection for a respected artist, the actual content of the title is sure to give fans what they’re looking for with hours of entertainment. Only when you look deeper at the decisions made in the production of the game and the delivery of its content does “Smash Hits” begin to frustrate.
