By now the inspiring story of Sir Nicholas Winton and the 669 children he saved from near certain death at the hand of the Nazis on the eve of World War II in Europe has been well told in books, documentaries, television programs, a 60 Minutes segment, and many other ways. Even a myth of sorts has been created around this heroic man that isn’t quite the whole truth, but nevertheless Nicky, as he was known, was indeed a hero. He also kept his story secret for 50 years until a BBC show called That’s Life uncovered it and became a sensation in England in the late 80’s. Winton never felt he kept his efforts a half century earlier “secret”, instead he “just never talked about it”.

Anthony Hopkins returns in a trailer for the film based on an extraordinary true story. Bleecker Street has released the new preview for One Life. The film showcases Hopkins as a man who happened upon a tragically developing encounter with refugee Jewish children who are in the path of Nazi occupation in Prague. Amazingly Hopkins’ younger version of the character had taken it upon himself to embark on a mission to save the children from the growing threat.
The official synopsis from Bleecker Street reads,
“Based on the book If It’s Not Impossible…: The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton by Barbara Winton, One Life tells the incredible, emotional true story of Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton (Flynn), a young London broker who visits Prague in December 1938. In a race against time, Winton convinces Trevor Chadwick (Sharp) and Doreen Warriner (Garai) of the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia to rescue...

At least one high-profile TIFF title won’t be going to Netflix. “One Life,” the well-received and well-reviewed Anthony Hopkins vehicle has been acquired by Bleecker Street. The biopic, starring the two-time Oscar winner as the elder version Nicholas “Nicky” Winton, will get a domestic theatrical release in 2024. This would seemingly place it out of the current award-season race.
The James Hawes-directed film also stars Johnny Flynn, Lena Olin, Romola Garai, Alex Sharp, Marthe Keller, Jonathan Pryce and Helena Bonham Carter. Penned by Lucinda Coxon and Nick Drake, the Saw-Saw Films and BBC Films production is based on Barbara Winton’s book “If It’s Not Impossible… The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton.”
The film features Flynn as a young Winton, a London broker who eventually convinces members of the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia to rescue children in Prague as the Nazis close the borders in late 1938. Fifty years later,...

Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield took the internet by storm (as they should!) after presenting together at the Oscars ceremony this year. Tweets were exchanged and a lot of feelings were felt. And now it's been announced (via Deadline) that the pair will co-star in a new project together a romantic comedy film titled "We Live In Time."
It's a pleasant change from their recent filmography. Pugh appeared in a multitude of different genre-bending roles — Ari Aster's horror film "Midsommar," Olivia Wilde's "Don't Worry Darling," along with her superhero responsibilities in Marvel Studios' "Black Widow" and "Hawkeye." Garfield was recently seen in Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Tick, Tick... Boom!," Michael Showalter's "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," and his terrific television outing in Hulu's "Under the Banner of Heaven." The performers haven't appeared in a romantic comedy in a very long while, and this one's certainly shaping up to be an exciting project.

Joe Wright’s Cyrano twirls onto 797 screens, the highest-profile specialty release in weeks (as the market awaits Focus Features The Outfit with Mark Rylance and Sony Pictures Classics Mothering Sunday). But the well reviewed period musical romance from Uar starring Peter Dinklage is landing in a tough place. Industry estimates anticipate a low single digit opening given the inconsistent reception for movie musicals and the fact that its key older demos, especially women, have been the slowest to return to theaters.
Cyrano is based on Edmond Ronstand’s late 19th century drama Cyrano de Bergerac – itself loosely based on a French nobleman known for bold adventures and a large nose. It premiered at Telluride last year, had a weeklong LA theatrical run in Dec. and garnered an Oscar nomination for Costume Design (and BAFTA nom for Outstanding British Film of the Year). It’s 86% Certified Fresh with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

In Cyrano, director Joe Wright found his first opportunity to direct a musical, bringing both intimacy and scope to the adaptation of Erica Schmidt’s 2018 stage musical of the same name, which was itself based on the classic 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand.
While Wright had fallen in love with the story of Cyrano as a teenager, he’d come to consider making his own version after seeing Peter Dinklage and Haley Bennett perform in a Connecticut staging of Schmidt’s play. “There was something very immediate and authentic about the intimacy of that relationship that I thought we could translate cinematically,” he said Saturday on a panel with the film’s stars Bennett and Kelvin Harrison Jr at Contenders Film: New York.

Peter Dinklage and Haley Bennett offer a fresh take on Edmond Rostand’s classic French play in the newly released trailer for “Cyrano,” which hits theaters on Dec. 31.
The film, based on Rostand’s “Cyrano de Bergerac,” follows the chivalrous poet Cyrano (Dinklage) as he attempts to win the love of Roxanne (Bennett), all while convinced his physical appearance makes him unworthy of it. However, Roxanne has eyes for another man, Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), who cannot speak eloquently, so he enlists the help of Cyrano to write his love letters to Roxanne for him. The two men must then battle for Roxanne’s love, all while singing songs in late 19th-century Italy.
While the original story’s protagonist sports an oversized nose, screenwriter Erica Schmidt reimagines Cyrano as a dwarf, recruiting none other than her own husband — Dinklage — to play the lead role.

James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan are to star in a lockdown relationship drama for the BBC, which will be helmed by Emmy and BAFTA-winning director Stephen Daldry.
Written by Dennis Kelly (Utopia), Together is billed as a hilarious and heart-breaking story of a husband and wife who are forced to re-evaluate themselves and their relationship through the reality of the Covid-19 lockdown. It is Shoebox Films and Sonia Friedman Productions film for BBC Two and BBC Film.
Horgan features as a refugee charity worker, while McAvoy plays a self-employed, self-made man who runs a boutique computing consultancy. Athur is their 10-year-old son and is the one thing that has kept his parents’ relationship together.
McAvoy said: “Dennis writes so wittily for these characters and his script had me within the first few pages. When I heard Sharon was involved with Stephen Daldry directing it was a no brainer.

As the U.K. enforces tough new rules for those entering the country, film and television productions are set to take a direct hit.
Until recently, film and TV industry workers were exempt from having to quarantine upon entering the U.K., but that allowance was removed from Jan. 18. From Feb. 15, it’s mandatory for all visitors to the U.K., including citizens and residents, to quarantine for 10 days and take a Pcr coronavirus test on days two and eight of their self-isolation. Failure to take the first test results in a £1,000 fine, while a £2,000 penalty applies to those who fail to take the second test, as well as an automatic extension of the quarantine to 14 days.
“As an industry, we’re very agile and able to cope with these kinds of things because we effectively bake those restrictions into our production plans,” producer Guy Heeley tells Variety. Heeley has...

“Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage is set to reprise his title role in a film adaptation of the off-Broadway musical “Cyrano” that Joe Wright will direct and MGM has acquired, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Also reprising her role is Haley Bennett, who played the role of Roxane in the musical alongside Dinklage when it debuted in 2018 at the Terris Theater. Ben Mendelsohn and Brian Tyree Henry will also star in the film.
“Cyrano” was written by actress, director and playwright — and Dinklage’s wife — Erica Schmidt, who gave a new spin on the classic “Cyrano de Bergerac” play by Edmond Rostand about the French cadet with an unusually large nose. Though in the new production, Dinklage never dons a prosthetic nose but instead is chastised for his stature.

Stacy Martin (Nymphomaniac), Sharon Rooney (Dumbo), Hayley Squires and Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education) have joined the cast of Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy-fronted biopic Louis Wain.
The first look of the feature, which also stars Andrea Riseborough and Toby Jones, has also been revealed.
The quartet play Wain’s eccentric sisters, while Adeel Akhtar (The Big Sick), Julian Barratt (Mindhorn) and Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing) round out the cast.
Wain was an English artist who lived between 1860-1939 and is best known for his drawings, which consistently featured anthropomorphized large-eyed cats and kittens. In his later years he may have suffered from schizophrenia (although some specialists dispute this claim), which, according to some psychiatrists, can be seen in his work.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy are set to star in “Louis Wain,” a drama from Studiocanal and Amazon about the life of a famed British artist from the 19th century.
BAFTA-nominated director Will Sharpe (“Flowers”) is writing and directing the film based on the life of Wain, an artist born in 1860 in London who came to popularity for his drawings of anthropomorphized, big-eyed cats. It’s also debated among historians whether Wain struggled with schizophrenia, with some psychiatrists saying that his condition is exhibited in his drawings.

Steven Knight segues from the mean streets of early 1900s Birmingham in Peaky Blinders to the deceptively calm waves of Serenity, his stylized thriller starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Knight wrote and directed the pic as his follow-up to his 2013 Tom Hardy thriller Locke, and the trailer has dropped ahead of the pic’s planned October 19 theatrical release via Aviron Pictures.
Serenity stars McConaughey as Baker Dill, a fishing boat captain leading tours off a tranquil, tropical enclave called Plymouth Island. His quiet life is shattered when his ex-wife Karen (Hathaway) tracks him down and begs him to save her and their young son from her new, violent husband (Jason Clarke) by taking him out to sea and leaving him for the sharks.
The ask thrusts Dill back into a life he’d tried to forget and his world is plunged into a new reality that may not be all that it seems.
Djimon Hounsou, Jeremy Strong and Diane Lane co-star in the film produced by Guy Heeley and Greg Shapiro.
