Behold — it’s Indiana Jones in embryonic form. Paramount’s South American adventure exploits Peruvian scenery and the ’50s exotica phenomenon that was the unique songstress Yma Sumac. The production receives hearty input from Charlton Heston, Nicole Maurey and Thomas Mitchell, but it’s mostly a relic today. Not because the Raiders films have stolen its thunder . . . because it’s plenty hokey, even for 1954.

The legend of Hugh Glass lives on.
After winning three Oscars, including best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and best director for Alejandro G. Inarritu, The Revenant proved to be one of the best movies to watch in 2016.
Viewers familiar with the movie not only discussed the performance by DiCaprio, but about the story of Hugh Glass, a fur trapper who was left for dead after a bear mauling in the 1820s.
One of the big contributors to this film will have to be historian Clay Landry, who served as a technical advisor for the film. With his help, he advised on the historical accuracy for the time period on the project. The production staff consulted on the details with him from the weapons, clothing, language and even down to the buffalo meat.
Landry has plenty of stories to tell about the production and his contribution to the project.

It's the John Ford film you never heard of, not because it's bad, but because it's a little confused. Richard Greene, David Niven and an emotional George Sanders (!) dedicate their lives to clearing their father's name of a smear by international arms smugglers! Their spirited companion Loretta Young behaves almost as if this were a screwball comedy. So does the director! Ford aficionados will be fascinated. News came late last week that SkyMall, the airline catalog that could always be found in your seat-back pocket, would be filing for bankruptcy, along with its parent company Xhibit. Now, CNBC reports that ScotteVest, a tech-friendly apparel manufacturer based out of Sun Valley, Idaho, intends to bid for SkyMall's remaining assets. ScotteVest CEO Scott Jordan tells CNBC that he thinks the catalog ran into trouble when it failed to adapt to the needs of Internet shoppers, saying, "SkyMall was doomed to fail by its business model." He then optimistically stated: "But I know how to fix

A big question coming out of the seventh season Parks and Recreation premiere last week was how long the show was going to tease out the mystery behind Leslie and Ron’s big spat over something called “Morningstar.” Not terribly long, it turns out, as this week’s second episode of the two-parter pretty much centralizes its plot around discovering every minute detail of what went wrong all those years ago. In nearly all aspects – jokes, ridiculous plot lines, Amy Poehler’s bangs – it felt like a truer return to form for the series than the premiere ever was.
“William Henry Harrison” opens with Leslie searching for a cause to back her attempts in preserving the land that Ron wants to build a Gryzzl campus on. This, in classic Parks and Recreation fashion, spans from listening to a creepy returning character pitch an over-sexualized version of Disneyland to a guy...

She was a record breaker, a film star, a bestselling author and an entrepreneur – but her greatest achievement, in her own eyes, was popularising the modern swimming costume
Rihanna and her barely-there outfits? Pfoo. Katy Perry and her constant cleavage? Whatever. And Cheryl Cole's rosy bottom? Not even fighting in the heavyweights. If you want provocative, the blueprint was drawn up a century ago, by an Australian swimmer called Annette Kellerman.
Born in 1886 in the Sydney suburb of Marrickville, Kellerman had such weak legs that until the age of six or seven, she wore steel braces for support. To help her muscles develop, Kellerman's parents began taking her to the local pool. "Only a cripple can understand the intense joy I experienced," she later said. "After I learned, I'd go swimming anywhere, anytime."
It soon became clear that Annette was not only a natural-born swimmer, but also a natural performer.

What's good for the individual and good for the environment are strikingly similar and can help the world move away from material consumption, writes Charlotte Sankey
Social and personal psychologists typically list a handful of key actions that can help improve personal wellbeing but would they really stand up to being tested for planet friendliness too?
One of the most respected of such lists is the government's Five ways to wellbeing which came out of research co-ordinated by the New Economics foundation, as part of the Foresight report. The five actions are:
1. connect (with people, not technology)
2. be active
3. take notice
4. keep learning
5. give
Connect
When we have good relationships with people, we frequently end up sharing resources such as houses, meals or lifts. A house that keeps four people warm rather than one, or an oven that cooks a meal for a group, uses significantly less energy per person.

Scott Jordan has deep pockets. Literally. But like most fast-growing startups, he could always use some extra cash. So the founder of Scottevest and Tec, which makes jackets and vests with extra pockets for gadgets and other gear, took his pitch to ABC's "Shark Tank" -- and got a little more than he bargained for.
While his company is on pace to make $24 million in revenue this year and has licensing deals with the likes of Ralph Lauren and Timberland, Jordan found himself under attack from billionaire "shark" Mark Cuban both on air and during a lengthy exchange on Twitter. ("Running a wire through a piece of clothing?" Cuban shouted at Jordan during the show. "That's a patent? Are you kidding me?")
Jordan's appearance on "Shark Tank" may not have gone exactly as planned, as is often the case with reality TV, but he says the show has brought newfound...

In the midst of an extraordinarily divisive Gop Primary that will assuredly lead into an even more divisive Presidential Election, sometimes us regular American (professionally blogging) shmoes are left to wonder if rival politicians really can ever agree on anything. It turns out, there is, in fact, one – and Only one – issue on which nearly every president of the last hundred years has seen perfectly eye-to-eye regardless of their politics, platform, or party affiliation: Dogs are awesome. Because we strongly agree with this sentiment as well, we’ve compiled the following playfully subjective list of the 12 Most Adorable Presidential Dogs of the last hundred years (sorry, William Henry Harrison’s pneumonia-retriever). Enjoy it now, cause it’s the last time we’ll all be agreeing on something vaguely political for the rest of 2012 (click any for Full Size): 12. Liberty, Gerald Ford’s Golden Retriever 11. The last known image of Billy the Kid sold at a Denver auction on Sunday (June 26) for $2.3 million dollars. (For anyone keeping count, that's exactly half the amount Marilyn Monroe's famous "subway dress" sold for earlier this month.)
An infamous Old West outlaw, Billy the Kid -- aka William Henry McCarty -- is believed to have killed between eight and 22 people during his career of crime. He was relatively unknown during his lifetime until the governor of New Mexico placed a price on his head. But, like many Old West figures, many of the Kid's exploits were exaggerated.
Billy the Kid reportedly died in 1881 at the hands of sheriff Pat Garrett.
In 2010, New Mexico governor Bill Richardson considered a posthumous pardon for McCarty, but decided against it because of "historical ambiguity."
Auctioneers estimated that the image would bring in about $400,000, according to ABC News. But the buyer -- private...

Four score and seven years ago, Robert Redford mattered. As an actor, as a filmmaker, as a founder of a film festival and independent film movement. It's not that Redford is suddenly irrelevant or talentless, it's just that he's sort of faded into the limelight. He's not the same shiny smiliing wiseass we loved from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or The Sting. He's not even the same craggy faced rugged fella from Sneakers. It's just kind of surprising that he's still making movies, considering that over the past decade, he's fired off only two, and both of those incredibly forgettable. I'm not sure what prompted Redford to suddenly direct The Conspirator, a film that seems apropos of nothing. Granted, it's a very solid dramatization of the trial of Mary Surratt, one of the conspirators brought up on charges for the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, William Henry Seward, and attempted assassination of Andrew Johnson.

I'd like to start the second installment of Motion History by thanking everyone for all their positive feedback! There's no better feeling than knowing people enjoyed reading something as much as you enjoyed writing it, particularly since I feel as though I didn't even give the topic justice!
I've had a lot of requests to tackle particular movies. Believe me, I'm making a list, and we'll tackle it together. Your favorite will be coming. With so much enthusiasm, I feel as though this week's selection may let a lot of people down. But I was trying to avoid the personal temptation of picking something medieval, and I was inspired by TCM devoting a month to portrayals of Native Americans on film. I thought I'd chip in with a discussion of Michael Mann's The Last of the Mohicans, a film that walks the weird line between history, stereotype and authenticity.
