Remakes have always been and will always be a tricky proposition. You could have something as pure and wonderful as 1982’s The Thing, which is objectively better than the revered Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby version, but be trapped in purgatory for way too long before it is decided that its proper and loved. There’s a bunch that are better in different ways or at least thoroughly enjoyable in their own right like John Carpenter’s masterpiece, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and of course David Cronenberg’s The Fly. While you can argue the horror vs sci fi merits of any of these movies, their quality can’t be disputed. When it comes down to what you can or can’t remake, I think the gloves are off at this point. There’s very few sacred cows left and sometimes a remake can help. Something...

It’s all about the color red for the 7th day of Creepmas; blood red, to be precise. Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Days of Creepmas continues the holiday horror revelry, this time with holiday slashers that aim to paint the snow red with arterial spray and carnage. These holiday slashers demonstrate that there’s more to the realm of holiday slashers than killer Santas with a variety of Yuletide killers, from lonely security guards to mutated murderous snowmen. Save for one feel-good slasher to kick things off, today’s Creepmas offerings mainly capture the grimmer side of the holidays.
The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 7 holiday set slashers to paint the snow blood red.
Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

Four years before Silent Night, Deadly Night sparked a moral outcry — a movie which critic Gene Siskel called “contemptible” — another slasher used Santa Claus’ image for its own bloodthirsty story. However, To All a Goodnight managed to avoid all the hand-wringing from panicky parents and busybodies only due to the fact that most people didn’t even know this movie existed. Not much has changed whenever it’s mentioned today.
Had David Hess and Alex Rebar’s Santa slasher been granted a larger theatrical rollout back in 1980, perhaps it would have been the target of what many deem the greatest moral uproar in horror history. It’s no exaggeration to say there was an overreaction to Silent Night, Deadly Night; from the creation of advocacy groups to one psychologist fearing the movie would undo kids’ potty training, the hubbub surrounding Charles Sellier’s Christmasploitative slasher was unprecedented for the time.

Long before every conceivable comic book character received a film adaptation in the hopes of becoming the next blockbuster, there was Superman. While box office returns diminished over the course of four movies, the Man of Steel’s big-screen success heralded a crop of other superhero movies. Producers Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan swooped in to acquire the film rights to DC Comics’ other most well-known character, Batman (and they remain executive producers on every Batman movie), along with a more obscure title, Swamp Thing.
Not unlike a common trajectory in the modern comic book movie boom – in which filmmakers who have proven themselves in the genre space are given the keys to superhero properties – Wes Craven was enlisted to write and direct 1982’s Swamp Thing despite his unfamiliarity with the source material. While he would go on to make a name for himself with A Nightmare on Elm Street next,...

Veering sharply away from the visceral horror that put him on the map, Wes Craven followed up the game-changing The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes with the one-two punch of the silly, surreal Deadly Blessing and the comic-book adaptation Swamp Thing. An enjoyable enough romp if taken as an amiably lunk-headed action flick, Swamp Thing starts off with an effectively mounted first act that soon gives way to a lot of splashing around in the swamps, punctuated with some incongruously poetic (and oddly endearing) Beauty and the Beast-type moments, and liberally peppered with all the airboat crashes and cigar-chomping David Hess close-ups you could ever want. Add to that running tally Adrienne Barbeau doffing her wardrobe for some tastefully lensed skinny-dipping and an ultra-suave, Nietzsche-spouting turn from Louis Jourdan as villainous Dr. Anton Arcane and it all adds up to a surefire cult film in the making.

“Crocodile Rock” is one of Elton John’s most famous songs. Many love to sing along to the catchy chorus that includes an infectious “la la la” bit. However, the “la la la” section of the chorus comes from another song by Pat Boone that John borrowed.

Over the weekend, the Twitter account for a London police department shared that officers had arrested suspects for possession of “a large amount of cannabis,” including a picture of what appeared to be some truly foul weed. The replies on the post quickly filled up with jokes about the cops confiscating hedge trimmings, loose leaf chamomile tea, and so on — but one tweet included a fake audio clip of President Joe Biden explaining that he actually prefers low-quality pot.
“I’m from Scranton,” the simulated Biden said. “What I’m smoking is dirt.

Fifty years ago, two unknown filmmakers named Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham released their low-budget thriller “Last House on the Left.” Or, given its effect on audiences, maybe it’s more accurate to say they unleashed the film. Either way, the horror genre was never the same: Craven, who was making his feature directorial debut with “Last House,” went on to helm several of the smartest, scariest, and most imitated horror films of all time, including “The Hills Have Eyes,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” and “Scream.” Cunningham, his producer, would exert an equally pervasive influence on the genre as the director of the original “Friday the 13th.” Ironically, neither filmmaker had a strong desire to make horror movies. “I do not think Sean or Wes had any personal affinity for horror or set out to make an influential mark on the genre,” David Szulkin, author of “Wes Craven’s...

“It sure doesn’t feel much like Christmas.”
Growing up in Minnesota summers that seemed both endless and much-too-short, I always got a kick out of seeing “Christmas in July” advertisements, especially when I was digging through the previous week's newspaper in search of the Sunday comics after a sun-drenched week at summer camp. Along with slashed-down prices, the ads usually featured some version of a vacationing Santa kicking back on a pool float with a tropical shirt, sunglasses, and a dollop of sunscreen on his nose. This marriage of Christmas and July seemed odd to me. Other than occasionally wishing that a North Pole breeze would blow in on those sweltering summer days, Santa Claus and Christmas were distant memories when there was baseball, barbeques, and a tall stack of Goosebumps books from the library to keep up with.
But those ads must have done the trick, because years...

Nothing beats truth in advertising, and one could always leave it to the Italians to hop aboard a boat without any wind left in its tattered sails. This is the mid-‘80s so of course we’re talking about slashers, and in particular Body Count (1986), famed director Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust)’s fun and loopy take on backwoods horror.
Given a very limited release in the U.S. in October, Body Count was rolled out to the rest of the world the following year, mainly on videocassette. Immediately dismissed as a Friday the 13th knockoff (which it certainly is) five years too late (ditto), time has nevertheless been kind to a film with no agenda other than kill, baby, kill. The title is more than apropos; Body Count is the generic yellow labeled can at the horror store that tastes better than it has any right to.

Michael C. Hall will star in what may be the strangest Super Bowl commercial that’s not a Super Bowl commercial: The star will appear live in a one-performance-only half-hour Broadway musical for Skittles on the afternoon of the big game.
Skittles had previously announced its decision to stage a half-hour live musical event in lieu of a typical Super Bowl ad, with some proceeds going to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Near the top of the list of movies we do not recommend as a date picture, no way no how, Wes Craven’s gut-wrencher presented a real problem for critics. Whose movie exactly is this? The producer wanted a commercially daring pornographic gore shocker. The writer-director envisioned a political scream of rage against America he considered Evil. Is the film an abomination, or an honest reflection of society in chaos?

Raro Video resurrects an exploitation goodie masquerading as another bit of cheap Eurosleaze, Hitch Hike (aka Autostop Rosso Sangue) a 1977 thriller from Italian director Pasquale Festa Campanile. Like a tawdry version of an early Polanski effort, it’s a significant anomaly of its ilk for several reasons, the most notable being its director, usually known as a fixture of 1970’s Italian-style comedy (aka commedia all’italiana). Adapted from the novel The Violence and the Fury by Peter Kern, it’s headlined by Franco Nero, French actress Corinne Clery (the title character from infamous The Story of O, 1975) and grindhouse staple David Hess (The Last House on the Left, 1972), while predictable story elements spiked with moments of brutal violence should be enough to rejuvenate interest in a title not often screened in the Us (despite its initial box office success in Europe).

When it was revealed Ennio Morricone would be teaming with Quentin Tarantino to deliver an original score for The Hateful Eight — the biggest news out of this year’s Comic-Con, bar one — we wondered if this might be a brief respite for the director, in terms of utilizing anachronistic music choices. Today now brings the full soundtrack list (thanks to Music Box via Film Music Reporter), but rest assured, he snuck a few unexpected choices in the line-up.
Made up mostly of Morricone’s tracks (17 in total, with some repeated titles) and dialogue bits from the cast, there’s three outliers: The White Stripes‘ Apple Blossom, Roy Orbinson‘s — spoilers! — There Won’t Be Many Coming Home, and David Hess‘ — spoilers, again! — Now You’re All Alone, which was in the original Last House on the Left. Usually when someone famous passes away, I write a little thing on Twitter and Facebook, giving a little insight as to why they meant something to me. Be it a film that connected with me, a song that helped me through something tough, a book that I devoured multiple times and a piece or artwork that I could look at until the end of time, always seeing something new. But when it comes to someone like Wes Craven passing away, it feels as if I’m in an awful nightmare and there’s no Dream Warriors to save me and Freddy Krueger isn’t the wisecracking asshole but instead just death himself.
Wes Craven was one of the first filmmakers that I connected with at a young age. Of course, Freddy Krueger was the 80’s and being a child of the 80’s, I connected with slasher movies. Yes, I was...

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.

Motel Hell is available now on Blu-ray. That information alone should be enough to send horror fans shrieking into the streets to party until the wee hours of the morning. And we here all want to get into the festivities as well.
To celebrate the release of Motel Hell on Blu-ray, we've compiled our Top 9 Chilling Chainsaw Kills. Of course this is in reference to the iconic chainsaw scene in the climax of the film. There was something simply unforgettable about Rory Calhoun wielding a ridiculously long chainsaw while wearing a pig head like a Halloween mask. Classic!
But before we get to our top horrific movie chainsaw kills, we have some honorable mentions to share with you. We've got to go way back to find some of the earliest on-screen chainsaw kills. We came up with Dark of the Sun (1968) and The Wizard of Gore (1970) for two of the first buzzsaw butcherings.

There’s no denying that music has proven itself to be an integral part of our favorite horror films, to the point that the iconic scores for films like Halloween and Psycho are as important an aspect of the movies as the stories and characters themselves. But we’ve already talked about our favorite horror scores here on Fearnet in the past, so that’s not quite what we’re here to discuss today.
Ya see, many horror movies over the years have been given their very own songs, which have either been featured within the movies or played over their end credits. It’s not something that often happens nowadays, but back in the 80s and 90s, it wasn’t all that uncommon for studios to task musicians with writing and performing original songs for their horror movies. Ah, the good old days.

Just like VHS tapes, the past couple years have seen a big time resurgence in vinyl records, and companies like Mondo and Death Waltz Recording Company have been working hard to give us horror fans incredible releases to stick the ole needle on. One of the newest companies on the scene is the Belgium-based One Way Static Records, which was just launched this year and has already made a huge impact with a release of David Hess' Last House on the Left soundtrack - made available on not just vinyl but also CD and even cassette. As of yesterday, the company made their second release available for pre-order, and they've once again found vinyl inspiration in the early works of Wes Craven.

As Bruce Campbell proved to us all last week when he debunked the previous week’s announcement that Army of Darkness 2 was on its way, news of impending horror sequels should probably always be taken with a grain of salt. Countless sequels have been announced over the years, only to drop off the face of the earth shortly thereafter. It’s just the nature of the game, in a fickle business like the movie-making one.
Back in August we took a look at ten of those sequels that we’re still waiting to see, and today I’ve got ten more for ya. They were all planned, they were all announced, but none of them ever actually happened!

Abel Whitman (Hess) is a director on the edge – the edge of the industry, the edge of society and the edge of insanity – and his films are universally panned by audiences and critics alike. Seeking solice in the arms of a stripper he calls his muse, Whitman gets involved in a car accident which takes her life and drives him completely insane. Inspired by the grisly aftermath of the crash and reasoning that his films have failed because the effects do not look real enough, Whitman sets out on a killing spree, harvesting organs and blood from his victims and using them to create realistic gore effects. When critics praise this new found realism, Whitman cannot help but continue his murderous ways – ways, it turns out, he is most adept in getting away with.

The movie-making business is a fickle one, with projects oftentimes appearing one day, then completely disappearing the next. There are so many factors that go into making a movie that it's quite frankly a miracle so many movies actually do end up getting made. But what about the ones that are planned and announced, but never actually materialize? There are a whole lot of them, and today we take a look at a handful of horror movie sequels that found themselves stuck in the dreaded Development Hell. Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon One of the most frustrating stories in recent years within the horror genre is the story of the sequel to 2006's utterly brilliant cult classic Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon... a follow-up that, for whatever reason, just can't seem to get off the ground. Described as a "spreemake," meaning a sequel, prequel...

Swamp Thing is based on the popular DC Comics character and couldn’t be any more different than Craven’s previous film, Deadly Blessing. A departure into science fiction for the horror director and one of Adrienne Barbeau’s early genre films, it’s a Beauty and the Beast romance with some industrial sabotage thrown in for good measure. Just released to Blu-ray / DVD by Scream Factory, Swamp Thing is a great blast of nostalgia for kids of the 1980’s.
Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise) has been holed up in the swamps with his sister (Nannette Brown), working on a way to hybridize animal and plant DNA in an attempt solve the world’s hunger problems. Alice Cable (Adrienne Barbeau) enters the picture as a government agent sent to investigate and report on his progress. Swamp Thing (1982) is a peculiar entry in the Wes Craven canon. For a director who cut his teeth in porn (most directors began their careers as editors in this field in the early 1970s) and directed such fare as The Last House on the Left (1972) and The Hills Have Eyes (1977), Swamp Thing is a much gentler film. One of the few PG-rated entries to his credit, it was made just a few years prior to his very own A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), the movie that turned the horror film industry on its ear with the introduction of Fred Krueger and which spawned one of the most successful franchises in the genre.
Released on Friday, February 19, 1982 by the late Joseph E. Levine’s long-defunct Embassy Pictures, Swamp Thing is a film version of the DC Comic that was created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Set in...

We’ve been on hiatus. I think that means I’ve been lazy, but to you it probably only felt like moments. Seconds even. Maybe you’ve been chomping at the bit awaiting the arrival of the latest installment of 1980x. Maybe you forgot about me.. well I didn’t forget about you dear readers. I got soooo busy reviewing goddamn movies that I forgot about what it is that I love about writing about ideas. Concepts. I forgot that analysis is anal with a few letters scrawled at the end to make it look fancy. Not that there’s anything wrong with anal… which brings us to tonight’s conversation on It Came From 1980x. Let’s talk about the psycho-sexual, munging and cunnilinguini of Brian Yuzna’s 1989 satire horror gross out, Society.

Assuming I haven't been run out of town on a rail by you Dreadies after the first two films on this list, I'll carry on with the next entry. It's completely coincidental that two of the first three films on this list are directed by Wes Craven; the dude just made some badass films.
And perhaps none more badass than A Nightmare on Elm Street.
#8-A Nightmare on Elm Street
"Whatever you do, don't fall asleep."
Before he introduced the world to the horrors of Elm Street, Wes Craven had already established himself as a masterful horror writer/director with the releases of such films as The Last House on the Left in 1972, The Hills Have Eyes in ’77 and Swamp Thing in ’82, but it wasn’t until November 9, 1984, when Craven unleashed a horribly burned, supernatural child-killer named Freddy Krueger on the world in A Nightmare on Elm Street, that he became iconic.

Belgium-based One Way Static Records will release the original motion picture soundtrack from Wes Craven's 1972 shocker The Last House on the Left this year. The score was composed and performed by the late David Hess and this release will be fully dedicated to his memory, life and career as both an actor and musician who passed in 2011.
The label teamed up with director Wes Craven, producer Sean Cunningham and the Hess family to make the release possible.
Expect the package to contain the full original score which will be available on a deluxe gatefold vinyl edition with printed inner sleeve. A Digipack CD version and Digital Download, with digital booklet, will be included as well.

“I wonder what the meanest, foulest, rottenest, woodsiest sex crime ever was?”
Fred Lincoln was a giant in the adult film industry, directing and acting in hundreds of porno films from the early 70’s up until about 5 five years ago when his health began to decline. We Are Movie Geeks doesn’t cover porn, but like his costar David Hess (who died in October of 2011), Lincoln would have gone done in history as one of the slimiest degenerates in the movies if he had appeared in nothing except the 1972 rape and revenge classic Last House On The Left where he played the repellent villain Weasel Padowski (a name he sometimes used as a pseudonym for his porn directing). Director Wes Craven’s first film was one of the most notorious movies ever made, offending nearly everyone who saw it, and 40 years later, it hasn’t lost any of its edge.
