Exclusive: The Crown producer Left Bank is swapping the royal family for the world of hedge funds and artificial intelligence with its latest project – an adaptation of Robert Harris’ The Fear Index.
Deadline understands that the project is being lined up for British pay-broadcaster Sky and discussions are underway with the Comcast-backed company with a view to turning the book into a four-part drama.
Sony-owned Left Bank is the latest producer to give The Fear Index a crack; nine years ago Fox 2000 and Chernin Entertainment teamed on a deal for the film rights to the book, which was first published in 2011, with Paul Greengrass attached to direct.
The book, which was published by Penguin Random House, is set on May 6 2010, the date of the British general election and the 36-minute flash crash, the trillion-dollar stock market crash. Set in the office of Hoffmann Investment Technologies, a fictional hedge fund in Geneva,...

The Musketeers returns for its third and final series on Saturday the 28th of May with a confident, entertaining opener...
If you're reading this than maybe you, like me, felt a Musketeer-shaped hole in the Beeb’s New Year line-up. Fortunately, there was no need to fear cancellation as it was always going to be a question of ‘when’, not ‘if’ as filming of the forthcoming season had been no secret. The question was, despite the wait, was this season going to be better than the last (which was pretty decent by anyone’s standards) and how were the showrunners going to keep things fresh?
Based on episode one of the new run, I can say with some confidence that the show seems to have grown in all the right ways.
It opens big and picks up from where the last season finished (albeit four years later...

The BBC won't make any more series of The Musketeers after the third and final ten-episode run, it's been confirmed...
Following creator and showrunner Adrian Hodges' candidly worded departure ("I was totally knackered") from The Musketeers after series two, it's been confirmed that Porthos, Aramis, Athos and D'Artagnan will be hanging up their swords following the third run.
Ten new episodes of the BBC One action and adventure series, due to return to screens shortly, will bring the story to a conclusion. Executive Producer Jessica Pope promises that series three "will delight its fans and pay off everything they have come to love about the show." No chance of a shock-cancellation cliff-hanger there then, at least.
Digital Spy has some goodbye messages from castmembers Luke Pasqualino, Howard Charles, Tom Burke and Santiago Cabrera, all of whom express their thanks to fans and appreciation at having been part of the show.

From BAFTA-nominated writer Adrian Hodges (My Week with Marilyn) comes an exciting and modern interpretation of Peter Pan; one of the best-loved children’s novels of all time. Starring Golden Globe and Emmy-winning actor Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games, The Devil Wears Prada) as both Captain Hook and Mr Darling, Laura Fraser (Lip Service, Breaking Bad) as Julie and Mrs Darling, and the mesmerising Paloma Faith (Youth) as Tinkerbell, Peter & Wendy mixes fantasy with reality in a narrative based around Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The day before her scheduled heart surgery twelve-year-old Lucy Rose (Hazel Doupe) reads aloud to similarly sick children the original novel of Peter Pan by J.M.Barrie. That night she retires to bed with the images and words of what she has just read still in her head. As she falls asleep her dreams turn in to reality as the classic tale is intertwined with her modern day struggles.

The singer-songwriter will be joined in the modern day re-imagining of Jm Barrie's Peter Pan by Stanley Tucci, who will play Captain Hook.

ITV's two-hour drama will open in Great Ormond Street Hospital in the present day, with 12-year-old Lucy Rose (Doupe) awaiting treatment for a serious heart condition.
When her mother reads her and the other children the tale of Peter Pan, she falls asleep with thoughts of Neverland racing through her mind. She dreams her own version of the story into existence.
The drama will cut back and forth between Lucy Rose's version of Neverland and the struggles she is facing in hospital each day.

From Primeval to Merlin and Atlantis, Doctor Who's return spawned a host of Saturday teatime dramas that have since disappeared. What next?
It’s Saturday night. BBC 1 is showing Doctor Who. It does this a lot, generally speaking, and has done on and off (sometimes very off) for over fifty years. When the show returned in 2005 it brought with it the realisation that there was a huge family audience un-catered for on Saturday nights, and unfortunately Doctor Who was only on air for a quarter of the year, so it couldn’t do it all by itself.
ITV quickly realised it needed to attract that audience too, and while it had gameshows that dominated the schedules it didn’t have anything like Buck Rogers In The 25th Century or The A Team to put up against the BBC this time. And time was of the essence: new shows had...

The BBC’s The Musketeers will have to cope without its showrunner Adrian Hodges for its already-confirmed third series…
Here’s an interesting one – Adrian Hodges, creator and showrunner for the BBC’s The Musketeers, won't be signing on for the third series.
A third run for the family-friendly historical action drama has already been confirmed by the BBC (we can expect it early next year, if previous broadcast dates are anything to go by), but Hodges has ruled himself out for a return.
Our friends at Geek Syndicate got the scoop on the matter, with a quote from the man himself explaining his reason for leaving his own show:
“I just felt that after the last season I was totally knackered. I love the show but it had been a very intensive two…well four years really and what I didn’t want to go was go straight into developing a new season.

The Musketeers creator Adrian Hodges has stepped down as showrunner ahead of the upcoming third series.
Hodges adapted Alexandre Dumas's novel for BBC One, but revealed to Geek Syndicate that he will not be back for the next run.

BBC One was able to recommission The Musketeers thanks to financial backing from BBC Worldwide and BBC America, who also contributed to the first two series.

Chicago – The painting “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer” was created by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, and was considered Austria’s greatest artwork. The remarkable journey of the painting, stolen from its original Jewish family by the Nazis during World War II, is the basis for the new film, “Woman in Gold,” directed by Simon Curtis.
“Woman in Gold” is based on the true story of Maria Altmann (portrayed in the film by Helen Mirren), a Viennese immigrant in the United States who fought the Austrian government for rightful claim to her family’s paintings in the 1990s, including the famous gold leaf portrait of her Aunt Adele. Altmann brings in an American lawyer named Randol Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds) to act as her lawyer, and their years of litigation to make this art restitution was one of the most high profile of these cases. The film includes flashbacks of the family in Vienna during those war years,...

2.10 Trial And Punishment
So this is it, the end of series 2. It’s been a fair old journey with some excellent highs and fortunately not many lows (not to mention far too many interruptions – damn you sport and charity!). The series finale often seems to linger, perhaps unfairly, as the one remembered by most and considered a yard stick for the run as a whole. In that respect, Trial And Punishment (written by Simon Allen and directed by Nicholas Renton), is a fitting end to what has been a really strong season.
Perhaps the most vivid image from last week's preview was of a haunted Constance being led to the executioner. It was with some surprise then, that this opened the episode, as...

2.8 The Prodigal Father
Director Edward Bennett returns from last week’s middling A Marriage Of Inconvenience for The Prodigal Father. Written by Adrian Hodges, The Prodigal Father was centred on Porthos and as such my hopes were high, but the largely turgid central plot was overshadowed by an exciting and dramatic last five minutes which served to highlight the rather ordinary nature of the first 55 minutes
Yes, as was heralded by Treville’s sick bed confession from last week, we finally learn of Porthos' heritage. It’s a narrative that I’ve found largely underwhelming considering the machinations going on elsewhere in the Musketeers world. However, with Porthos being one of the stand-out characters in the first season and somewhat lacklustre this season, any opportunity for him to take...

2.5 The Return
The Musketeers returns to our screens having endured another week of sporting interruptions, and it returns with a flourish. The Return is yet another strong episode, but that wasn’t all, as it also came accompanied by news of a series renewal. Yes, our favourite French swordsmen will be back on our screens next year for another season of derring-do. Despite the high quality we’ve seen from this series so far, jitters following the Beeb’s cancellation of Atlantis coupled with their scheduling of The Musketeers away from that prime Sunday evening slot had made renewal feel less than inevitable. Let’s hope the strength of the show won through and clinched the deal, if for no other reason than an acknowledgement of the stronger direction The Musketeers has gone in,...

The BBC has ordered a third series of Adrian Hodges The Musketeers, which is due to start filming in April 2015...
The Musketeers, as our series two reviews show, has been going from strength to strength (despite a messy Friday night schedule for these past few weeks due to football, and now rugby).
It may have lost Peter Capaldi to Doctor Who, but Marc Warren's villainous Rochefort is beginning to fill those antagonist shoes nicely. The rest of the cast too, from leads Luke Pasqualino, Tom Burke, Howard Charles and Santiago Cabrera to supporting castmembers Ryan Gage, Tamla Kari, Maimie McCoy and Alexandra Dowling, have shaped up into a fine squad.
News of the show's third series renewal then, as announced at the start of this week by BBC Worldwide and BBC America (The Musketeers is partly financed, and goes out, internationally), comes as welcome indeed.

So four episodes in – nearly halfway – and we’ve had a pretty good season so far, a so-so opener but two strong follow-ups and now Emilie which sits somewhere comfortably inbetween. Written by Showrunner Adrian Hodges and directed by Andy Hay (of first season’s Knight Takes Queen and The Exiles as well as a future episode within this season), Emilie is a very different beast than last week’s somewhat frenetic The Good Traitor. However, whereas The Good Traitor was better than the sum of its many parts, Emilie never seems to fly in the way the previous episode did. Here are a couple of thoughts on why that might be.

2.3 The Good Traitor
Last week’s An Ordinary Man brought excitement and danger through some strong writing and performances, and could certainly be considered up there with the best the series has had to offer. It was a good example of how a Musketeers’ story can be told that reflects the excitement and adventure of the source material but in a manner that modern audiences would enjoy – exactly what we’ve been wanting from this adaptation. The question was of course – is this a one-off? Have they peaked early ? Well, in The Good Traitor the cast and writers have done an excellent job of picking up where An Ordinary Man left off – certainly being the equal in writing, performance and direction.

2.1 Keep Your Friends Close
So The Musketeers return for another 10 episode run, albeit switched from a Sunday to an unusual Friday night slot (which I can’t help feeling is something of a dump from the Beeb as the Sunday slot seemed much more appropriate and higher profile). The first season saw some highs, some lows and too many middles but was sufficiently entertaining to deserve another go-around. Indeed, as I sat down to watch Keep Your Friends Close it was certainly with a sense of optimism, as unencumbered with having to perform the necessary back stories the second season should zip along with stories focused on the team, action and the humour. At least that’s the theory.

Ready for some dark ‘n’ sexy Musketeer-based action? Let’s hope so, as that’s what the writers are promising…
The Musketeers was a fun romp of a show when its first series hit our screens earlier this year. Now, some interesting hype around the second run has come to light.
Writer Adrian Hodges has been mentioning that “some things have changed, some things remain the same – the four boys, d’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis are still very much at the centre of the action, but now they have a new and deadly opponent – The Comte De Rochefort, played by Marc Warren.”
We’ve also been told to expect “more stunts, more action, a little humour and wit, and some romance in the mix, as before; but I think this is a more demanding journey than before, as we’ve upped the serial element and taken the show in...

The BBC has premiered a new first-look trailer for the second series of The Musketeers.
Adrian Hodges' period adaptation will return to BBC One on January 2, with a Us premiere following on BBC America on Saturday, January 17.
Tom Burke, Santiago Cabrera, Howard Charles and Luke Pasqualino all return for the new episodes, with the launch trailer giving viewers a first look at new additions including Marc Warren (Hustle) as the villainous Comte de Rochefort and Antonia Thomas (Misfits) as Samara.
Previewing his adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's 1844 novel, Hodges previously said of series two: "I think this is a more demanding journey than before, as we've upped the serial element and taken the show in a slightly tough and perhaps more surprising direction.
"It's everything you might expect but taken a degree or two further than last time. The tone remains the same but this is a darker and sexier Musketeers.

13 year old Jack Hollington from Liverpool is set to star in the title role of the new BBC adaptation of LP Hartley's classic novel The Go-Between.
The Go-Between follows Leo Colston, who as an elderly man pieces together his childhood memories after finding his diary from 1900, which he wrote when he was 13 years old. A nostalgic tale about lost innocence, The Go-Between paints beautiful pictures of British life, humanity and social hierarchy at the beginning of the 20th century.
Jack (represented by Cam) attends classes at Southport’s So Talented! Academy of Performing Arts. He appeared in the Christmas episode of Doctor Who in 2013, and has a number of stage roles under his belt including playing Nathan in The Full Monty in the West End. BBC One has announced plans to adapt four classic 20th century novels.
Line of Duty's Jed Mercurio is to adapt a new version of Dh Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover, while Adrian Hodges (The Musketeers) is working on a new version of LP Hartley's The Go-Between.
Aisling Walsh will direct a new version of Jb Priestley's An Inspector Calls, and Ben Vanstone will adapt Laurie Lee's Cider With Rosie.
Lady Chatterley's Lover was censored in English for nearly 30 years since its original 1928 edition. It tells the story of an upper-class woman's affair with her gamekeeper. It was previously directed by Ken Russell as a BBC serial starring Joely Richardson and Sean Bean in 1993.
Jed Mercurio said: "Lady Chatterley's Lover is a novel that constitutes a milestone of English literature. I'm immensely excited by this opportunity to dramatise its iconic themes in a fresh and original way.

BBC America today set a June 22 premiere date for The Musketeers and a second season pickup for the series, which it co-produces with BBC Worldwide. The Musketeers, a BBC Drama production for BBC One, already was renewed by the flagship BBC network last month. A contemporary take on the classic Alexandre Dumas characters, The Musketeers, created by Adrian Hodges (My Week With Marilyn), is set on the streets of seventeenth century Paris, where law and order is an idea more than a reality. In addition to being King Louis Xiii’s personal bodyguards, Athos, Aramis and Porthos stand resolutely for social justice, honor, valor, love – and for the thrill of it. Luke Pasqualino (The Borgias) stars as D’Artagnan alongside Tom Burke (Great Expectations) as Athos, Santiago Cabrera (Heroes) as Aramis and Howard Charles (Royal Shakespeare Company) as Porthos. Peter Capaldi, Maimie McCoy, Tamla Kari and Hugo Speer also star.

Luke Pasqualino's d'Artagnan was the star of The Musketeers' first episode but hasn't really taken focus since, so it's refreshing to see the plucky young hero return very much to the forefront for 'The Challenge' - the adventure serial's latest outing.
Romance might finally be blossoming with Tamla Kari's comely Constance, but elsewhere d'Artagnan's fortunes are less favourable. He's yet to become a true Musketeer and a new nemesis also lurks on the horizon, the fearsome brute Labarge - with guest star Vinnie Jones taking on the sort of period villain role he's not attempted since the music video for Westlife's 'Bop Bop Baby'.
Jones might be a one-trick pony, but it's a trick he's undeniably good at performing and it's enormous fun seeing his cockney hardman routine relocated to 17th Century Paris.

Post the BAFTA-inflicted break, it was back to business with The Musketeers in their latest offering, The Homecoming, written by show runner Adrian Hodges and directed by Richard Clark (who directed the excellent Doctor Who episode, The Doctor’s Wife and previous Musketeers episode, The Good Soldier). Already at its mid-season point, the show has done well to inject some flair and freshness into an old tale by taking stylistic risks whilst remaining respectful to its source. The Homecoming should therefore present little risk, especially with the talent behind the camera, to the established formula – indeed, with Porthos’ turn as ‘Musketeer of the Week’ it should represent an opportunity to hit a high, with Charles’ portrayal...

Perhaps it was once watching him beat Luke Pasqualino to death with a bat back in his Skins days, but I'd suspected that there was a darker side to Hugo Speer's Captain Treville and those seeds bear fruit in another strong edition of BBC One's The Musketeers.
Similar to last week's instalment, 'The Good Soldier' uses a thriller plot to shed light on characters' backstories - both Treville and Santiago Cabrera's Aramis benefit this week, while Adrian Hodges's script also makes better use of Peter Capaldi's Cardinal than the past three episodes have managed.
The episode concerns a visit to France from Vincent Regan's brutish Duke of Savoy - both King Louis (Ryan Gage) and Richelieu are eager to have the Duke sign a treaty and lure Savoy away from their enemies in Spain.
But sins of the past soon threaten the alliance, as allegations...

A second series of new BBC Sunday night drama The Musketeers is on its way...
Good news. The Musketeers' combination of period intrigue, impressive swordplay, handsome troubled heroes and a guest star parade of established UK talent has earned it a second series.
Writer Adrian Hodges (Survivors, Primeval) made it clear from the outset that his take on Alexandre Dumas' seventeenth century characters was not an adaptation of the original novel but in keeping with its spirit. The series' poetic license with the Dumas quartet meant that a second, and why not, a third and fourth series were all possibilities. If the show can maintain the ratings success of its first three episodes, which, between them, averaged over six million viewers in the overnights, it can look ahead to a robust future on BBC One.
Series two will see the return of all four Musketeers,...

BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore said: "Drama in 2014 has got off to a great start on BBC One and The Musketeers has really brought something fresh and new to the channel. I can't wait to see how things will develop in the next series."
Adrian Hodges - who adapted the show from the original Alexandre Dumas stories - added that he is "completely thrilled" by the renewal news.

Interview Louisa Mellor 7 Feb 2014 - 07:00
We chat to the BBC's D'Artagnan, Luke Pasqualino, about The Musketeers, Snowpiercer, playing a young Bill Adama in BSG, & more...
Warning: contains a major spoiler for Skins series four.
Luke Pasqualino arrived on our screens in 2009 as Freddie McClair, beautiful stoner teen and doomed paramour of Kaya Scodelario's Effy Stonem in E4's Skins. Since then, he's dipped into his Italian heritage in The Borgias, played a young Bill Adama in now-defunct Battlestar Galactica prequel Blood and Chrome, and can currently be seen on BBC One on Sunday nights as impetuous young swordsman D'Artagnan in adventure series, The Musketeers.
We chatted to Pasqualino about his role in the new BBC series, his forthcoming part in the much-anticipated Snowpiercer from director Joon Ho Bong, and how one sets about measuring up to Edward James Olmos. What's more, we made it through the entire interview...

The Musketeers delves further into Athos' past in episode three. Here's Rob's review of Commodities...
This review contains spoilers.
1.3 Commodities
Commodities sees The Musketeers head in a different direction from its opening episodes. With style, characters and setting largely established it is perhaps unsurprising that writer Adrian Hodges decided to add some darker layers to what had been up to now, the very bright personalities of the Musketeers themselves. The series has won a lot of people over with its fun and adventurous take on this well-loved story, any departure – especially so soon in the season – could therefore be considered risky. The question is, will the change win over those critics who wanted a little more drama with their swashbuckling?
On first glance, Commodities’ opening would appear no different, stylistically speaking, than those that have come before it. Heavy on the action and humour,...

The Musketeers launched big last Sunday - but tomorrow night, our heroes will face a foe even more intimidating than Mr Selfridge - dastardly new villain Vadim, played by Jason Flemyng.
Digital Spy got on the phone to Jason for a frank chat about The Musketeers, why he's a lucky charm for Doctor Who actors and why he won't talk about Star Wars.
The Musketeers was devised by Adrian Hodges, who you previously worked with on Primeval...
"Yeah, he's a lovely guy - we've always got on really well. When I left Primeval, it was my choice - the contract came up [so I left, but] I went back and did one episode to get me out of the show.
"It was something that I was proud of but I missed doing my movies. I think that's really where my heart lies - not jobs that go on for years and years. I'm too nomadic to do that.

Sunday night was a big one for new and returning British dramas in the UK. The Season 2 premiere of Jeremy Piven-starrer Mr Selfridge on ITV had an average 5.27M viewers for a 20.5% share, according to the overnights. That’s about 2M less than last year’s Season 1 bow of the department store period series. Season 2 kicks off in the States on PBS on March 31, the same day that Season 3 of Call The Midwife starts. That hit period medical drama returned to BBC One on Sunday night with a record 9.61M viewers and a 36.1% share. It was the most-watched program of the weekend in the UK and also the highest-rated episode ever of the show’s career. Midwife provided a strong lead-in for new BBC One series The Musketeers in its debut, which was up against Mr Selfridge. The updated spin on the classic tales of Alexandre Dumas stars new Doctor Who,...

When Doctor Who returned to our screens in 2005, it resurrected the notion of airing kid-friendly drama on a Saturday night, with Merlin and more recently Atlantis attempting to fill the void whenever Who was absent.
With The Musketeers, the BBC is taking a stab (no pun intended) at reviving another TV staple - the glossy Sunday night family drama - and on this early evidence, Primeval creator Adrian Hodges's revamp of the Alexandre Dumas classic is a palpable hit.
Hodges makes The Three Musketeers work for a modern age by essentially using Dumas's 1844 story as the template for a period procedural - right down to the tongue-lashing they receive from Hugo Speer's Captain Treville in his office, our Musketeers are cast as the maverick cops of 17th century Paris.
There's plenty of action, humour and saucy bed-hopping from the get-go, while the framing story is, appropriately enough, a...
