Jan Komasa’s latest feature has come out on top at the postponed New York-based gathering, which announced its winners online. The 19th Tribeca Film Festival was forced to postpone its originally scheduled programme owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, the award winners have still been announced, as the juries managed to do their job from a distance. According to the organisers, a scaled-down version of the festival is planned to run in September. In the International Narrative Competition, The Hater by Polish filmmaker Jan Komasa was crowned with the Best International Narrative Feature Award. Gloria Steinem’s biopic is officially hitting the road, securing domestic distribution from Ld Entertainment and Roadside Attractions.
Directed by Julie Taymor, “The Glorias” premiered in the official selection at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It stars several generations of actresses taking on key phases in activist icon Steinem’s life, led by Julianne Moore and Alicia Vikander.
Ld and Roadside are planning on an early fall release ahead of the 2020 election, and promised a national promotional tour backed by Steinem. Endeavor Content represented filmmakers in the sale.

Six inaugural grantees unveiled.
The Tribeca Film Institute (Tfi) and Pond5 are launching a filmmaking fund to support sustainable careers for filmmakers and have announced the first six grantees.
The programme is funded by tax-deductable donations and artists will be able to apply for micro-grants three times a year. Pond5, which describes itself as the world’s largest stock video marketplace, will match donations.
The grants will address the needs of artists who lack resources during what the partners called “in-between” phases, including research, creative collaboration, festival travel, content, community screenings, outside-the-box mentorship, and extra release support.

On Monday, each of us sits down to address the notes that we received from Rodney Evans, the director of The Happy Sad, on Friday. Coming your way in limited release on September 23rd, A Bird of the Air is a quirky, indie number that looks as charming as anything to come along in a while. NEW YORK -- IFP has unveiled a new advisory board, date and 10-feature slate for its third annual Narrative Rough Cut Lab, a mentorship program for first-time filmmakers.
The lab will move from September (the month of the IFP Market and Filmmaker's Conference) to June to give filmmakers and mentors more postproduction time before winter and spring festival submission deadlines. It also will expand from three to four days.
The filmmakers on the advisory board include Ted Hope, Warrington Hudlin, St. Claire Bourne, Jacques Thelemaque, Effie Brown, Karin Chien, Janet Pierson and Frances Negron-Muntaner. Sundance's Cara Mertes and BMI's Doreen Ringer Ross also are members.
Among those leading filmmaker lab workshops are composer Mychael Danna; editors Sabine Hoffmann and Kate Williams; film execs Sarah Lash, Dana O'Keefe and Melissa Raddatz; MPAA independent film liaison Scott Young; and journalist Brian Brooks.
