Netflix is no longer constrained to land-based devices. The streaming video-on-demand service partnered with Virgin America to bring free in-flight streaming to Netflix subscribers on select aircraft.
Starting September 29, both new and existing Netflix subscribers flying on Virgin America planes equipped with ViaSat WiFi will get free internet access to stream their favorite Netflix content. Subscribers can access streaming titles through their mobile devices. Virgin will have ten ViaSat-equipped planes entering service in the next few months, and the #NetflixOnboard partnership lasts through March 2, 2016.
“Netflix and Virgin America are both known for their focus on innovation and for shaking up their respective industries – so we’re thrilled to team up to bring the best in technology and entertainment to the skies,” said Abby Lunardini, Virgin America Vice President of Brand Marketing and Communications, in a release. “We hope our guests enjoy the offering and know that even President Frank Underwood...

Netflix.s Australian service is expected to be free for the first six months to telco subscribers as it takes on Stan (currently available at no cost for 30 days) and the Presto Movies/Presto TV combination.
The Us streaming giant announced today its Australian feed will be integrated with Fetch TV. That means Netflix will be marketed to approximately 180,000 Fetch subscribers that will have the second generation set-top box, distributed by Optus, iiNet and Dodo, by the time Netflix launches in late March.
While the two services won.t be bundled, Fetch.s Stb will enable Netflix subscribers to watch the streaming service on their large screen TVs.
Also, Netflix customers will be able to buy Fetch.s movies and TV series when the latter adds an electronic sell-through component to its 40 linear channels and movies-to-rent later this year.

Many traditional television networks consider Netflix a bane to the entertainment industry. But Dish Network has decided to forego the unpleasantries and embrace the streaming video-on-demand service. The pay-tv provider will give its subscribers Netflix access via its Hopper set-top boxes starting December 17, 2014.
The deal between Dish and Netflix marks the first time a large U.S.-based network has agreed to add Netflix’s programming to its own for users’ ease of access. Netflix already has a similar deal in place in the U.K. with Virgin Media. And earlier this year, the Svod service brought its own cable TV channel to smaller networks around the U.S. Other than those minor wins, though, Netflix hasn’t been able to get any large networks and pay-tv providers in the U.S. on board with a deal like the one it just brokered with Dish.

Netflix is an odd beast in that it’s been around in the Us for a long time yet we’re still getting used to it over here in the UK. It seems to be popping up everywhere and following the news that Marvel have teamed up with the video streaming service to create four new TV series, it shows that they’re only getting better.

This was a little buried under yesterday’s flurry of news about the changes to the Apple TV and iPad — and Netflix‘s talks to become a cable service. But the streaming video provider said in a blog post that owners of Apple TV boxes can finally sign up and pay for the streaming video service through Apple‘s iTunes Store, instead of going to a computer to make the purchase arrangements. Netflix also said that it is taking advantage of Apple TV’s new capability to stream video at 1080p HD quality, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. “We’re always looking for ways to make the Netflix experience simpler and better,” Netflix VP Business Development Bill Holmes said. The company didn’t disclose financial terms with Apple. But if the tech giant gets a cut of the $7.99-a-month subscription price — which is probably the case — then that could establish a...

Every year the National Film Registry — a branch of the Library of Congress — chooses 25 movies to preserve for posterity. And, as usual, quite a few of its newest choices aren't ones deemed the best of their day by Hollywood — that is, they're not past Oscars contenders. Although 15 of the films cited were eligible (that is, they were produced after the Oscars were launched), only nine of them received nominations and only one — 1941's "Sergeant York" — was an Oscar winner, with awards for lead actor Gary Cooper (he prevailed in two of his five bids, picking up a bookend in 1952 for "High Noon") and editor William Holmes. Here...
