This article contains Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga spoilers.
Furiosa’s world is not a romantic place. George Miller’s post-apocalyptic Wasteland is barely habitable and fit for the toughest of survivors only. The young Furiosa (Alyla Browne) must learn this fast in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga when she is snatched from her idyllic home. Her mother tries desperately to rescue her and very nearly manages but instead is caught, tortured, and killed by Dementusm (Chris Hemsworth) and his men in front of her daughter. Dementus wants to know where Furiosa’s home is. But Furiosa knows she can’t tell him, even if it means watching the person she loves most in the world burned, maimed, and murdered. That is what love gets you: vulnerability and pain. And so the young Furiosa becomes the property of Dementus, and is later bartered to Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme) who...

When the follow-up to a commercially and financially successful film is announced – whether a sequel, prequel, or spin-off – the usual question arises: why? Why not let the originally planned movie stand alone in peace? Is there a need or even enough story to create another film in the same fictional world? What will this new installment have to offer? The questions are numerous, but in the end, they will disappear if Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga meets the tremendous anticipation of the general public and critics worldwide.
George Miller created the Mad Max franchise in the ’80s, but despite its tremendous success at the time, it was only with Fury Road – with the help of his co-writer, Nico Lathouris – that the saga reached a whole other level of appreciation. In the medium of cinema, sequels still feel like a relatively recent phenomenon, especially as studios continue to seek to exploit intellectual property and squeeze as much blood (re: money) out of the same stone as possible. Yet despite the obvious capitalistic aims of film franchises, cinematic universes, and what have you, the tradition of continuing a story and/or telling new tales featuring evergreen characters is very ancient.
The "Mad Max" films, as conceived by the series' mastermind, George Miller, deliberately seek to continue those ancient, mythical traditions of storytelling rather than service more modern concepts of how to present a serialized narrative. Of course, this may not have always been the case, given that the original "Mad Max" from 1979 was made partially to exploit then-popular trends like the criminal biker film, the vigilante action movie, and so on. Certainly, beginning with 1981's...

Chicago – It’s no “Fury Road,” but “Furiosa” is a suitably high octane summer blockbuster that delivers the eye popping action that Mad Max fans come for. The film is a prequel to that Oscar winning film, with Anya Taylor-Joy taking over for Charlize Theron as the one armed, shaved headed all around world-class bad ass.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The film starts with a pint-sized Furiosa picking a piece of fruit in a lush landscape known as The Green Place. She’s abducted by a biker gang and taken back to Dementus’ fiefdom. Her mother nearly pulls off a daring rescue by cutting down bikers with a sniper rifle and fighting off whole hoards single handedly. Furiosa is held captive by Dementus and then essentially traded to rival warlord Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme) after Dementus lays siege to Gastown, one of the three fortresses of the wasteland, along with Immortan Joe’s Citadel,...

This article contains massive spoilers for "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga."
With the release of "Furiosa," the fifth film in the "Mad Max" saga, it is abundantly clear that these movies never intended to be a single, serialized narrative. Instead, each film is a piece of mercurial mythology — stories that aren't concerned with strict continuity. They're legends, in the way that stories about Moses or King Arthur are legends; they aren't chronicles of what exactly did happen, but what may have happened.
This approach to the "Mad Max" films began with the 1979 original (which opens with the vague "A Few Years From Now..." title card) and continued in earnest with 1981's "Mad Max 2," which is narrated by an older version of one of the principal characters (whom we only hear and never see). Only 2015's "Fury Road" is narrated by Max himself, and even then, he's not of sound mind.

Set before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road, a young Furiosa (Alyla Browne) is stolen from her homeland of The Green Place by a group of post-apocalyptic bikers who follow a maverick leader called Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). Handing her over to the citadel years later, Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) works her way up the ranks to get revenge on the man who took her mother’s life.
If you were a frequent moviegoer in 2015, chances are you had a front-row year for the objective masterpiece of that year — Mad Max: Fury Road. In fact, the film has been so well received that demand for more in the nine years since has been at a consistent high, finally manifesting itself in the form of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

George Miller gets biblical in the opening moments of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth installment in his postapocalyptic action franchise. The young Furiosa, played by Alyla Browne, picks a ripe piece of fruit from a tree growing at the edge of a verdant forest. “We’ve come too far,” says her companion, emphasizing the forbidden nature of the act with the perfect amount of allegorical on-the-noseness. What happens next certainly has the aura of divine punishment, as Furiosa is whisked away from her home (“the Green Place” first mentioned in Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road) by a masked group of motor bikers.
She’s no helpless waif, mind you, and with her steadfast mother, Mary Jo Bassa (Charlee Fraser), in hot pursuit, Furiosa gives as good as any of the lecherous brutes tormenting her. But the fates, not to mention the narrative dictates of an origin story with an already fixed outcome,...

When George Miller released "Mad Max: Fury Road" in 2015 (our review here), he completely revolutionized action films forever. The long-awaited fourth installment of his post-apocalyptic Ozploitation franchise, "Fury Road" was over three decades in the making, but before Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron ever pressed their boot leather to the gas pedal of a war rig — there was Miller's script for "Furiosa." Almost entirely written before production began on "Fury Road," Miller outlined a thrilling epic about the life of Imperator Furiosa before she crossed paths with "Mad" Max Rockatansky.
Now, Miller has brought that story to the big screen, a prequel to "Fury Road" and an immersive dive into the life story of one of cinema's greatest characters of the last 20 years. Thanks to the extensive behind-the-scenes oral history of "Fury Road," we know that Miller is a meticulous director who storyboards out his films within an inch of their life.

The first thing to say about “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is that it’s not like any other “Mad Max” film. The movie, which runs 2 hours and 28 minutes, is teemingly, sprawlingly, phantasmagorically ambitious. Where “Mad Max: Fury Road” was set over three days, “Furiosa” takes place over 15 years and tells the origin story of Imperator Furiosa in five chapters (which come with titles like “The Pole of Inaccessibility”). The film has a cast of thousands of depraved hooligan bikers with rusty weapons and rotten teeth. At times, it feels like they’re getting ready to gather for Wasteland Woodstock.
The second thing to say about “Furiosa” is that though it contains a handful of awesome action moments, the action doesn’t dominate the way it did in previous “Mad Max” films. The director, George Miller, seems more invested this time in his world-building than he is in his road-warrior-ing.

She’s a survivor, a scrapper, someone who makes a compelling case for smeared axle grease as a postapocalyptic fashion statement. You need someone to do repair work on a War Rig going 99 mph on a run to Bullettown? She’s your go-to. One day, she will rescue a harem of “wives” held captive by a psychotic madman, and meet a slightly less mad man named Max. For the moment, however, the...

Since their beginnings in 1979, George Miller’s hyper-jacked Mad Max movies with Mel Gibson had not received a single Oscar nomination, not even for Tina Turner’s great signature song “We Don’t Need Another Hero” in 1985’s Beyond Thunderdome. But then, 30 years later, when finally the fourth and Gibson-less edition appeared, the snooty Academy got on board and gave the newly regenerated Mad Max: Fury Road 10 nominations including for Best Picture and Director. It won six of them, virtually sweeping the crafts categories.
Nine years later comes a prequel, Furosia: A Mad Max Saga, and Miller, now seemingly ageless at 79 (he was 34 when the first one came out) has perhaps given birth to the greatest Max yet, a wheels-up, rock-and-rolling epic that delivers the origin story of the title character Charlize Theron picked up in Fury Road when she was about 26.
That movie only covered about three days total.

George Miller, the director of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is revisiting the on-set drama between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy in his 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road.
In a new interview, Miller recalled the feud between the stars during the film’s production, which resulted from Hardy’s tardiness.
“They were just two very different performers,” Miller told The Telegraph. “Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer. Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance – and always the first one on set.”
Miller noted that things on the set gradually got better, adding, “I’m an optimist, so I saw their behavior as mirroring their characters, where they had to learn to cooperate in order to ensure mutual survival.

It is a well-known fact that George Miller is one of Australia’s best directors and filmmakers. The visionary filmmaker gave us the Mad Max franchise, which starred Mel Gibson in the titular role; he was later replaced by Tom Hardy in Fury Road, a movie that also introduced the character of Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron. This year, a spin-off from the main series, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, will be released as the most recent installment in the saga. The movie will premiere on May 23, 2024 in theaters around the world and will focus on the background story of the character of Imperator Furiosa. Now, just two weeks ahead of the premiere, a final trailer has been released, hyping us up for the upcoming movie!

Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth are ready to “make it epic” when Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga barrels into cinemas on May 24, 2024! As tickets for the full-throttle prequel become available for pre-order, the final Furiosa trailer explodes onto screens with action, drama, and one particular shot that now makes me curious about an element of the film. I’m talking about the shot of the CGI-enhanced War Boy.
My knee-jerk reaction to the CGI-enhanced War Boy is one of apprehension. How large of a role does this character play in the film, and will their cartoonishness offset an otherwise incredible-looking film? I hope not. One of the more thrilling elements of Miller’s Mad Max series is the visual spectacle, and I worry the CGI-enhanced War Boy could be an “arrow to the knee.” I could be entirely off base, and I’m simply being paranoid for no good reason.

Fans were clearly devastated after the announcement that Charlize Theron is no longer returning to lead the upcoming post-apocalyptic film Furiosa, but director George Miller has a very logical reason for this decision.

The prequel franchise is now led by Anya Taylor-Joy who portrays the young version of Furiosa. There had been ideas of using CGI on Theron to de-age her, but this was ultimately scrapped by Miller.

Total Film Magazine wants you to witness the badassery of Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa for George Miller’s upcoming prequel with new covers for the entertainment publication. On the first Furiosa magazine cover, Taylor-Joy’s road warrior sports the latest in Wasteland fashion: tire tread armor, worn leather straps, and black grease paint covering the top half of her shaven skull. For the alternate cover, Furiosa evokes an unholy Wasteland clergy look with a red cloak, bandaged chest, fire-roasted pants, and a mechanical arm to help crush War Boys’ balls into dust.
Directed by Miller from a screenplay he wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa has the following synopsis: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by the Immortan Joe.

This article contains mild plot spoilers for George Miller’s Furiosa!
Director George Miller is continuing the Mad Max franchise with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which is set to reach theatres on May 24th – and with that date just over a month away, the film got some promotion during the Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and George Miller took the stage during the Warner Bros. panel. Miller told the eager CinemaCon crowd that Furiosa takes place over 18 years, whereas Fury Road’s story lasted three days. Miller then quipped that if the apocalypse actually happened, Anya would be the one he’d want to hang out with as she has the rigor and commitment.
Speaking about Hemsworth, Miller said he couldn’t think of anyone to play Dementus, and he’d had the script for a long time.

It is a well-known fact that George Miller is one of Australia’s best directors and filmmakers. His best-known work is the Mad Max franchise, which starred with Mel Gibson in the titular role; he was later replaced by Tom Hardy in Fury Road, a movie that also introduced the character of Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron. Furiosa was such an amazing addition to the franchise that Miller decided to give her a standalone prequel movie, where Anya Taylor-Joy will be playing a younger version of the character.
Furiosa is set to arrive in theaters on May 23, 2024, in just a couple of months, and ahead of the movie’s premiere, Warner Bros. has just blessed us with another trailer for the movie, revealing more information about Furiosa’s past, as well as her conflict with Warlord Dementus, who is played by Chris Hemsworth. We've already had a glimpse of George Miller's latest shiny and chrome return to his dystopian Mad Max world, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, via the first trailer that dropped late last year. A new one, featuring more about the title character's story and Anya Taylor-Joy being a badass, is now online for you to witness:
Turning back the clock to the younger days of Charlize Theron's Fury Road character, this new look at the prequel film offers more details on what happened with Furiosa (Taylor-Joy).
We'll meet her as a girl (played initially by Alyla Browne) brought up in the lush, verdant Green Place of Many Mothers, one of the few vegetated areas still thriving in the aftermath of nuclear apocalypse. But she falls into the hands of the warlord Dementus, and so begins a vengeful quest to rescue her mother from the clutches of the villain.

What a day. What a lovely day! While we are still obsessing over the trailer for "The Acolyte" and the sight of a bunch of lightsabers igniting at once, George Miller slammed down his fist and reminded us that whenever George Miller has something to show it deserves our entire attention.
After the first trailer for "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" teased a cacophony of action and madness in our return to the wasteland, the latest trailer doubles down on the madness but ups the ante by focusing on the "saga" part of the trailer. Indeed, even if the synopsis wants you to believe this is a simple yet still bombastic story like "Fury Road," the trailer makes it clear this is much bigger in scope.

It didn’t used to be an issue when a character was recast with a younger actor for a prequel or flashback scene, but with digital de-aging, directors can choose to have the same actor portray a character throughout their life. When it was announced that George Miller would be directing a Mad Max: Fury Road prequel featuring Furiosa, some were upset when he decided to recast the role rather than de-age Charlize Theron.
While speaking with Empire (via IGN), George Miller explained why he recast the role of Furiosa with Anya Taylor-Joy instead of de-aging Charlize Theron.
“It definitely would have been Charlize [had Furiosa been filmed before Fury Road],” Miller said. “I began thinking, ‘Oh, maybe we could do de-aging.’ Then I watched really masterful filmmakers like Ang Lee and Martin Scorsese, doing Gemini Man and The Irishman, and I saw that it hadn’t been licked. All you’d be watching is, ‘Look how well the technology works?...

When director George Miller needed to fill the role of Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road, he turned to actor Hugh Keays-Byrne, who had previously played the villainous Toecutter in the original Mad Max. Sadly, Keays-Byrne passed away in 2020, before Miller could get the prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga into production – so in this movie, which is set to reach theatres on May 24, the role of Immortan Joe is being played by Lachy Hulme. Hulme’s casting in the role was confirmed by Empire, and they also scored a great quote from Hulme about the scope of the film. He told them Furiosa is “David Lean, but with motorbikes instead of camels. When you see 4,000 custom-made motorbikes come over a hill, you shit your pants.“
Hulme pulls double duty in the Furiosa, as he also plays a character called Rizzdale Pell, who is “one of the gang members...

You’ve got to live up to a name like Immortan Joe. And the villain in Mad Max: Fury Road did exactly that, cutting a mercurial, mesmerising, menacing figure in the Wasteland, ruling his War Boys with an iron fist, and barking out put-downs like “Mediocre!” with relish. Now, get ready to ride eternal, shiny and chrome, once more – Immortan Joe is back in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, ready to unleash more vehicular chaos. But until now, it’s been unknown who exactly would be stepping into the plastic-abs bodysuit and fearsome breathing mask this time around – the legendary Hugh Keays-Byrne, who played the role in Fury Road, passed away in 2020.
Empire can confirm that the role in Furiosa will be played by Lachy Hulme – a firm friend of filmmaker George Miller who now pulls double-duty in the prequel. Hulme was first cast as Rizzdale Pell, one of the...

The Matrix Resurrections revives Neo and Trinity from one more adventure inside the simulation. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise the roles that made them sci-fi legends at the turn of the century, and they’re bringing a few other franchise veterans with them. Among the other returners are Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson, Lambert Wilson as an older and disheveled Merovingian, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe.
We’ve already seen our first glimpse at the Merovingian, who’s clearly fallen on hard times since he last tormented our heroes during a deadly bondage rave inside the Matrix, and now a new trailer finally shows Smith back as Niobe. It’s not in the way you think, though.
“It’s so easy to forget how much noise the Matrix pumps into your head. Something else makes the same kind of noise: war,” a much older Niobe tells a reawakened Neo in the video.

Erik Thomson (Photo: Alex Vaughan).
In a perfect world Erik Thomson would have just wrapped filming of Amazon Prime’s Back to the Rafters and have started pre-production on the ABC dramedy Yes, Chef!
Stateless star Fayssal Bazzi would be preparing to go to the Us to meet with agents and producers and looking forward to the May release of Paul Ireland’s Measure or Measure, in which he co-stars with Hugo Weaving.
After roles in Amazon Studios’ historical drama The Underground Railroad and the BBC and Netflix serial-killer drama The Serpent, Damon Herriman was set to star in a film in New Zealand.
Roz Hammond was getting ready to perform alongside Lachy Hulme in director Tyran Parke’s stage adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at Her Majesty’s in May.
All of that is now on hold, of course, curtailed by the Covid-19 crisis.

Preacher Season 4 Episode 1
AMC’s Preacher has always struck me as a bit of an underdog, a show with something to prove. Part of this may stem from the source material itself, a Vertigo comic by Garth Ennis and the late Steve Dillon that, over the last two decades, has garnered a cult following. Kudos to Sam Catlin, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg for figuring out how to adapt a property that doesn’t easily lend itself to the small screen. And yet here we are, staring down Preacher’s fourth and final season.
And judging from the premiere, Jesse (Dominic Cooper), Tulip (Ruth Negga), and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) are in for plenty of gleeful, blood-drenched mayhem. The road to Hell may be paved with good intentions,...

Oliver Jackson-Cohen in ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ (Photo credit: Netflix).
Leigh Whannell has cast Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who stars in the Netflix supernatural drama series The Haunting of Hill House, as the lead in The Invisible Man.
Produced by Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum and Goalpost Pictures’ Kylie du Fresne, the horror movie inspired by the classic monster character starts shooting in Sydney this month.
Jackson-Cohen joins Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid and Harriet Dyer (The Inbetween) in the Universal Pictures film, whose plot is under wraps.
Deadline hails the casting of Jackson-Cohen as quite a coup considering Johnny Depp was originally in the frame to play the lead.
Whannell cast the English actor after being impressed by his performance as Luke Crain, one of five siblings who are haunted by memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it, in the Netflix series.

Even with many comic book movies having followed The Dark Knight since it arrived in cinemas nearly a decade ago, it could be argued that very few villains – if any – have reached the bar set by Heath Ledger’s Joker. To his credit, the late actor lost himself in the role, as I never once saw Ledger when I looked at the screen – I saw only the Clown Prince of Crime. Really, one need not strain themselves wondering why he was awarded a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
But, if we’re to look back slightly further, I’m forced to recall a time when rumors were swirling regarding who would land the role of the Joker in the period separating Batman Begins from The Dark Knight. Seriously, before Ledger was formally announced as having gotten the part in mid-2007, everyone from Paul Bettany to Lachy Hulme had...
