The Vanderpump Rules Season 10 finale, aptly titled “#Scandoval,” concluded with a dramatic exchange between Tom Sandoval, two-timing paragon of Angeleno scumbaggery whose five-percent ownership stake in one of West Hollywood’s seediest bars made him think he was the second coming of Steve Rubell, and Scheana Shay, an aspiring pop star/vlogger who will fall head over heels for you if you mount a TV in under seven minutes.

When Angelina Jolie read Alessandro Baricco’s short novel “Without Blood” — the basis for her next directorial effort — the Italian fable about the brutality of war and healing in its aftermath had an immediate therapeutic effect.
“I read it right as I was going through the beginning of a very dark time in my life. I read it in the month that followed my divorce [from Brad Pitt in 2016],” recalls Jolie, who shot the adaptation at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios. “It had the effect on me that it’s had on so many people,” Jolie says, noting that the blurb on the cover says that the book is about the complexity of the human condition.
“I didn’t understand that when I first read it. I just knew the book had a profound effect on me,” she says. “I think it’s one of those pieces of art, of somebody’s intuition and mind,...

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Amazon Studios, for this edition we look at how costume designer Susan Lyall, production designer Jon Hutman, and cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth re-imagined the private and backstage life of Lucille Ball (Nicole Kidman) and Desi Arnaz (Javier Bardem) in writer-director Aaron Sorkin’s new film “Being the Ricardos.”
For Jon Hutman, the production designer who built the original “The West Wing” sets, the focus of his latest collaboration with Aaron Sorkin was familiar territory. “What people want to see in this movie is not what happened on the stage; everyone wants to know what happens backstage.” Recalled costume designer Susan Lyall, “One of the first things Aaron said, ‘We are not doing ‘I Love Lucy.’ It’s the drama behind the comedy.’”

If you enter into Being the Ricardos expecting a tell-all scandal-ridden exposé of the beloved couple, you may be summarily disappointed. However, if you approach the film looking for an effectively told story of a couple wherein one party goes to the ends of the earth for the other in an attempt to make the relationship successful and the pain that is caused when that is not reciprocated, then you will be rewarded with one of the more honest and heartbreaking stories delivered by recent cinema.
The narrative of the film centers on one particular week during the production of the seminal sitcom I Love Lucy during which national newspapers are preparing a story that links star Lucille Ball (Nicole Kidman) and the Communist Party. The golden age of television is echoed in Amazon’s Being the Ricardos, which follows Lucille Ball (played by Nicole Kidman) and Desi Arnaz (Javier Bardem) during one week of production on the iconic ’50s sitcom I Love Lucy. “We wanted to pay homage to the era,” says cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth — a two-time Oscar nominee for The Social Network and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo — of his early conversations with writer-director Aaron Sorkin.

“To be the production designer is so much to do with the unspoken part of the story and the way that that can sort of fit the audience’s experience,” says Grant Major (“The Power of the Dog”) about how he hopes his work is perceived — or not perceived — by audiences. We talked with him and his fellow production designers Jon Hutman (“Being the Ricardos”), Adam Stockhausen (“The French Dispatch”), and Ina Mayhew (“Respect”) about their work on some of this season’s awards contenders. “My job is as much about trying to create the emotional reality of the world as it is to reproduce the reality,” explains production designer Jon Hutman about his approach to recreating the world of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in the biographical drama “Being the Ricardos.” In this case the emotional heart of the story was “about what happens when your dreams come true, and now you’re worried about losing it all.” We talked with Hutman as part of our “Meet the Experts” Production Designers Panel. After revisiting a slice of 1960s history in last year’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Aaron Sorkin turned his lens to “Being the Ricardos,” cataloging a politically tumultuous week in the 1950s for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz during the heyday of “I Love Lucy.” The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences often falls hard for movies about old Hollywood, and it would be foolish to think that they’ve changed their tune, especially after seeing films such as “Mank” from David Fincher garner the most nominations in the 2020 Oscar race. The new movie from Amazon Studios could follow a similar trajectory — competing in categories across the board.
Under Sorkin’s direction, “Being the Ricardos” presents plenty of chuckles and sympathy for our favorite redhead in TV history. Kidman embodies the essence of Ball, especially in her mannerisms during the rehearsals and filming of episodes. She very well may break your heart,...

They join Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem, who are playing the “I Love Lucy” stars, as well as J.K Simmons and Nina Arianda as William Frawley and Vivian Vance, who played Fred and Ethel on the classic sitcom.
Hale will play “I Love Lucy” executive producer and head writer Jess Oppenheimer, and Shawkat and Lacy will play the show’s longtime writing partners Madelyn Pugh and Bob Carroll Jr.
Also joining “Being the Ricardos” and rounding out the cast are Clark Gregg (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Nelson Franklin (“Veep”), John Rubinstein (“Family”), Linda Lavin (“The Good Wife”), Robert Pine (“CHiPs”) and Christopher Denham (“Billions”).

Amazon Studios has announced the start of principal photography on writer/director Aaron Sorkin’s next drama film, “Being the Ricardos.” Filming started this week in Los Angeles. Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem star as real-life couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, the faces behind the classic 1950s TV sitcom “I Love Lucy,” which centered on the happy but idiosyncratic marriage of Lucille and Ricky Ricardo.
Working in a confined timeframe similar to Sorkin’s script for “Steve Jobs,” “Being the Ricardos” unfolds during one production week of “I Love Lucy” — starting with the Monday table read through Friday filming with a live audience — when Lucy and Desi face a crisis that could end their careers, as well as their marriage.
Kidman stars as Ball opposite fellow Oscar winner Bardem as her husband Desi Arnaz, the Cuban-American actor, musician, and president of their television production company, Desilu Productions.

Nancy Meyers Thinks Scrutiny of Her Gorgeous Kitchens Is Sexist, But That’s Only Part of the Problem
Filmmaker Nancy Meyers knows you’re talking about her kitchens, but that doesn’t mean she’s excited about it. Over three decades into her career — which has included half a dozen directorial outings, screenplays for bonafide modern classics like “Private Benjamin” and “Father of the Bride,” and over $600 million in domestic box office receipts alone — Meyers’ films have persistently been called out for one particular element: dazzling sets and lavish production design.
During a Saturday afternoon conversation with Mindy Kaling at the PGA’s Produced By conference, Variety reports that Meyers was “asked how she feels about the attention paid to material objects in her women-centered films,” especially in films like “Something’s Gotta Give” and “It’s Complicated,” which feature dreamy kitchen sets.
“I don’t love when a journalist or critic will pick up on that aspect, because they’re missing why it works,” Meyers said. “It...

The 23rd annual Art Directors Guild Awards took place on Saturday (Feb. 2). These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the winner of the Best Production Design race at the Academy Awards. Over the first 22 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar champ has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various genre categories. Fifteen of the Academy Award winners first prevailed with the guild, including the last five in a row.
The current Oscar frontrunner for this award, “The Favourite,” won at the Adg in the period category over, among others, two of its Oscar rivals: “First Man” and “Roma.” That race was rounded out by “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” One of the other two Academy Awards contenders — “Black Panther” — won the Adg fantasy film prize. The fifth Oscar nominee, “Mary Poppins Returns,” contended in that race. The contemporary award went to “Crazy Rich Asians.

With his adaptation of John Bellairs' The House with a Clock in Its Walls, veteran horror filmmaker Eli Roth ventures into family-friendly fantasy territory, delivering up his most confidently helmed and all-around entertaining project to date (albeit comparing his latest to his previous films does seem a bit odd). Anchored by a trio of outstanding performances from Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, and Owen Vaccaro, The House with a Clock in Its Walls conjures up a bevy of kid-appropriate frights and has the good sense to cast Kyle MacLachlan as its villain to boot, making for a delightful kickoff to the Halloween season for all the pint-sized fans out there.

As they spend time with fellow travelers, including young newlyweds Lea (Laurent) and François (Poupaud), and village locals Michel (Arestrup) and Patrice (Bohringer), the couple begins to come to terms with unresolved issues in their own lives. In its style, and its treatment of themes of the human experience, By The Sea is inspired by European cinema and theater of the 1960s and 1970s.

One of the more curious projects that has yet to screen this year is Angelina Jolie Pitt’s follow-up to Unbroken, the intimate drama By the Sea. Co-starring alongside her husband, Brad Pitt, Jolie also scripted the feature, which follows them as a couple on a getaway in 1970’s France. The story specifically finds Jolie as Vanessa, a former dancer and Pitt as Roland, a writer, both entangled in a crumbling marriage as they find rejuvenation after coming across a quiet, seaside village. Today now brings a promising new trailer for the film set to debut at AFI Fest soon.
“I wanted to suggest and guide and give hints to the audience but not bore them or reveal all before the film itself. I like trailers that don’t explain the whole film; that tell you exactly what to expect,” Angelina Jolie Pitt tells EW. “It isn’t my intention...

The Art Director's Guild have named the most well designed and carefully decorated movies of the year. How well do you think they did in terms of Best? This is as good a time as any to tell you that we've begun our annual Film Bitch Awards, now in their (gulp) 15th year so you can see my preferred ballot there.
The guild which represents 2300 industry people like Production Designers, Art Directors, Set Designers, Model Makers and Artists of various kinds (Scenic, Title, Matte, etcetera) voted for the following 15 films, most of which are firmly entrenched in the Best Picture discussion indicated that they didn't watch too many screeners before voting.
Did Inherent Vice's elaborate last supper joke win it this nomination? Or was it the whorehouse?

Just below are the 2015 Art Directors Guild nominations and as much as it may seem like Nightcrawler and American Sniper are currently bathing in nominations from all corners, what other contemporary films were going to get nominationsc The period category, however, does consist of a few alternatives that weren't nominated such as Mr. Turner and Fury and I can't help but wonder what the guild would have done in attempting to categorize Noah... Is it a period film or a fantasy filmc I'll leave that one alone... Perhaps one of the more surprisingly absent nominees is Maleficent. You could say there were too many special effects, but then again, isn't that what today's fantasy films primarily arec That said, just below are the nominations for contemporary, period and fantasy films and you can find my current Production Design predictions right here. I see this one as The Grand Budapest Hotel's to lose,...

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" follows the struggle between light and dark inside Olympic athlete-turned-bombardier Louis Zamperini (Jack O'Connell). We watch him learn to fight through to find spiritual transcendence. His extraordinary true-life survival story is a study in contrast -- harrowing yet beautiful -- which sophomore director Jolie wanted to emphasize visually, sonically, and musically. After speaking with cinematographer Roger Deakins, I grabbed more of the behind-the-scenes crafts story from production designer Jon Hutman, costume designer Louise Frogley, supervising sound editor Becky Sullivan, editors Tim Squyres and Billy Goldenberg, and composer Alexandre Desplat. Point-of-view is key. "My goal is to make the place look the way it feels to Louis," says Hutman. "For example, when he lands at Kwajalein after 47 days in a raft, there are two things that are emotionally important: One is strangeness, foreignness, the most...

When Angelina Jolie got the job directing "Unbroken," the new film about Louie Zamperini and his WWII experience, she immediately started hiring the very best people she could possibly hire. Roger Deakins is her photographer. The score is by Alexandre Desplat. William Goldenberg and Tim Squyres cut it. Designed by Jon Hutman. And the list of screenwriters who share final credit for adapting the book by Laura "Seabiscuit" Hillenbrand? Amazing. A murderer's row. Joel and Ethan Coen. Richard Lagravenese. William Nicholson. Nuclear force talent. Here's where I tell you that I have not read Hillenbrand's book, nor was I especially familiar with Zamperini's story before I sat down in the theater yesterday. Anything I write, I'm writing about the film and the way his story is presented here, not about the real guy, who evidently touched a lot of lives. I want to be clear about that because it always...

Beverly Hills — Angelina Jolie is making movies. A lot of movies. On Sunday afternoon the Oscar winner sat down for a Q&A to discuss the first of three films she's had in the works, "Unbroken," the long-awaited biopic of Louis Zamperini. An Olympic athlete at the1936 Summer Games in Berlin, Zamperini's life took a dramatic turn when he enlisted in the Air Force during WWII and had a life-changing experience that found him adrift at sea for over 47 days and subsequently interned for over two years in a Japanese Pow camp. Zamperini tried to get his story on the big screen for decades, but it didn't come to pass until Laura Hillenbrand wrote "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption" in 2010 and, eventually, Jolie decided to direct. What Jolie didn't realize when she was considering the project was that Zamperini was actually her neighbor.

Grandeur often rules the day in Best Production Design, which awards the men and women responsible for a movie's set design and construction. The category typically favors period pieces, though at least one fantasy title tends to find a home every year. It is rare for truly contemporary films to be nominated. However, the category is more open to fantasy and contemporary pieces than its cousin Best Costume Design. (Last year was the first year the costume designers had their own branch, but no easily discernible new trends could be observed in my opinion.) Recent years have also suggested openness to CGI-complemented work ("Life of Pi" and "Gravity" immediately jump to mind). On that note, it's worth mentioning that the Art Directors Guild has implemented a new rule somewhat under the radar for its precursor awards this season. According to the new provision, period films must now have the majority...

Filmmaker and costume designer Sophie Black recounts her personal interpretation of Heathers, a film defined by vivid visual interpretation.
It is just a coincidence that the first time I saw Michael Lehmann’s Heathers (1988) was within hours of the first time I saw David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986), and I immediately made comparisons between the two films which I may have not noticed otherwise. More people are quick to compare Heathers to the work of Tim Burton, because of the associates he had on the film (producer Denise Di Novi and star Winona Ryder, to name but two) and the fact that the candy-coloured suburban setting mirrors that of Edward Scissorhands (1990). But the picket-fenced world of Blue Velvet equally does so, and preceded both films, and only Blue Velvet matches Heathers in its extremity at portraying unusual characters, and capricious changes in editing and tone.

Universal Pictures today announced that "Unbroken", the new film directed by Angelina Jolie, will be released in North American theaters on December 25th 2014.
"Unbroken" marks Jolie’s second turn behind the camera, after her critically acclaimed directorial debut, 2011’s Golden Globe Award-nominated "In the Land of Blood and Honey".
Based on The New York Times bestselling book "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption" by Laura Hillenbrand ("Seabiscuit: An American Legend"), "Unbroken" is set to begin production in late September 2013.
