“Becoming an Astronaut,” an ambitious documentary that will focus on four new astronauts who will be announced by the European Space Agency (Esa) this November, has won the Focal Audience & Market Strategies pitching event at the Zurich Film Festival.
Organized by Focal, the Lausanne-based foundation for film and audiovisual media training, Audience & Market Strategies is a three-part training program that helps producers promote their projects at an early stage. This year’s event showcased eight Swiss projects in various states of development.
The program culminated with the pitching event, in which the producers presented their projects to sales company representatives, industry experts and an international jury comprising Stephen Kelliher of Bankside Films, Netflix’s Lars Wiebe, Olivier Tournaud of Cinephil, Sven Wälti, head of film at Swiss pubcaster Srg Ssr, and Deadline’s Diana Lodderhose.

HBO Europe and Berlin-based Dreamer Joint Venture Filmproduction have boarded “Trust Me,” Joanna Ratajczak’s probing doc feature on a real life couple’s experimentation with an open relationship.
“Trust Me” will be presented at Locarno’s Match Me networking event by Stanislaw Zaborowski, at Warsaw’s Silver Frame, the project’s lead producer. The HBO Europe co-production was put through by Hanka Kastelicová.
Headed by Oliver Stoltz, Dreamer Joint Venture produced Marc Wiese’s 2020 doc feature “We Hold the Line,” about Filipino dictator Rodrigo Duterte’s persecution of journalists, and Markus Imboden’s “On the Edge,” an Arte France-backed relationship drama.
It turns on Alicja and Sebastian, a couple which seems to have it all – a happy relationship, two wonderful children, money, a large number of friends – until Sebastian proposes that they should open up the relationship to other partners.

German distributor Der Filmverleih in Stuttgart has boarded Berlin-based Films in Motion’s World War II trilogy penned by American writer J. Frank James.
The films, in various stages of development, include “The Face,” produced with Leipzig-based Departures Film and starring Ludwig Trepte (“Deutschland 86”). The story turns on a traumatized Jewish survivor and an army deserter posing as a priest who are bonded together into a friendship while reconstructing a bombed out church. Markus Imboden (“The Foster Boy”) is set to direct.
In “Life Through a Dead Man’s Eyes,” directed by veteran helmer Jo Baier and produced with Amsterdam-based Nl Film and Hupe Film in Cologne, a former SS concentration camp guard in danger of being apprehended for his brutal past faces horrors beyond his imagination. Herbert Knaup and Matthias Habich star in the haunting drama.

New films from Markus Imboden and Xavier Koller among new films at the Zurich Film Festival.
Xavier Koller’s Die Schwarzen Bruder and Markus Imboden’s Am Hang are among a trio of new Swiss films announced as part of the Zurich Film Festival (September 26 – October 6).
Adapted from the successful children’s book of the same name, Koller’s family-history follows chimney sweep boys who escape from the drudgery of city life back to their mountain villages. The film premieres in the festival’s new Children’s and Family Films strand.
Koller’s drama Journey of Hope won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 1990.
The Foster Boy director Markus Imboden’s next effort is an adaption of Markus Werner’s novel Am Hang, in which two men get involved with a female phantom that draws them dangerously close to each other. Martina Gedeck, Henry Hübchen and Max Simonischek star.

As I predicted earlier this week, a five-member jury in Switzerland has chosen, from a shortlist of five options, Ursula Meier‘s Sister (L’enfant d’en haut) as its submission to the Academy for consideration in the best foreign language Oscar race. The French-language film, a gripping and beautifully-made drama with a third-act twist, revolves around a 12-year-old thief (Kacey Mottet Klein in only his second film), his mysterious guardian (Léa Seydoux from Midnight in Paris and Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol), and his victims (including Gillian Anderson of The X-Files). It premiered at February’s Berlin Film Festival, where Meier won a prestigious Silver Bear Award. It subsequently played at many film festivals, including the Los Angeles Film Festival in June. And it will go into limited release — courtesy of Jeff Lipsky‘s new distribution operation Adopt Films limited — on October 5.

Christian Friedel and Ursina Lardi, co-stars of the Michael Haneke film "The White Ribbon," will team once again alongside Ulrich Thomsen and Thomas Thieme in an upcoming post-wwii thriller penned by J. Frank James to be helmed by Markus Imboden. The film follows the story of "an amnesiac whose only clue to his true identity is the concentration camp uniform he's wearing" which sounds like a fairly nuanced role that should suit Friedel--that stage actor who made his excellent film debut as the narrator and protagonist of Haneke's Palme d'Or winning film. Thomsen, who recently starred in Susanna Bier's Oscar-nominated…...
