There will be many comparisons in the next day or three between Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki’s shockingly beautiful and elegiac epic about a giant lizard triggering nationwide trauma for a country in ruins, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the newest monster smash up between the Big G and the Ape from Skull Island. But right at the top, every reader should recognize this is a fruitless exercise; a contrast as meaningful as pondering the differences between a genuine Oscar winner and a Saturday morning cartoon.
For make no mistake, Godzilla x Kong is a cartoon. I’m told the film technically qualifies as live action, too, because Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dan Stevens appear in front of some blue screens (and presumably to pick up hefty paychecks for their troubles). But I still don’t entirely believe it. Flesh and blood actors might float by to spout exposition,...

Kevin Feige still wants to make Avengers: Secret Wars the biggest phenomenon in the superhero genre, despite the numerous setbacks faced by the studio. While his Og Marvel characters have started failing him, Feige wants other new characters from Sony and 20th Century Fox to play major roles in upcoming films. Most notably, Feige is reportedly eyeing Tom Hardy’s Venom to play a key role in Avengers 6.

Fans do not like the idea at all, as they believe that Kevin Feige is attempting to involve too many characters and story arcs in the film. This has the potential to turn the film into a giant mess. They want Tom Hardy’s Venom to stay within the Ssu, and Marvel could possibly introduce his arc via the next Spider-Man film.

Jack Clark and Jim Weir’s Birdeater is an intriguing entry into the Australian horror scene, attempting to weave a tapestry of psychological tension amidst the backdrop of a bachelor party gone terribly wrong. The premise is straight forward—a cocktail of bad decisions, simmering tensions, and an echo chamber of toxic masculinity, making for an unsettling slow-burn thriller that promises to leave its audience teetering on the edge of their seats. However, while the concept is ripe with potential, the execution leaves something to be desired.
The film introduces us to Louie (Mackenzie Fearnley), his fiancée Irene (Shabana Azeez), and a motley crew of friends and frenemies, including the unpredictable Dylan (Ben Hunter), the laid-back Murph (Alfie Gledhill), and the enigmatic Sam (Harley Wilson), an old flame of Irene’s with a complicated history within the group. The dynamic is ripe for drama, and the film teases the unraveling...

A blurred image of a Wake in Fright poster in an early shot in Birdeater cuts right to the heart of directors Jack Clark and Jim Weir’s feature debut, a hat tip to the style and tone of madness ahead. Like Ted Kotcheff’s 1971 classic thriller, Birdeater utilizes horror and thriller mechanics and tropes to deconstruct Australia’s masculine identity, one at odds with today’s sociopolitical landscape, through a contemporary lens. While it doesn’t push the genre elements far enough, its heady themes, sustained dread, and distinct visual language culminate in a tense psychodrama that poses compelling questions.
The signs that something’s deeply amiss in the relationship between engaged couple Irene (Shabana Azeez) and Louie (Mackenzie Fearnley) come fast and furious from the outset. Codependency issues and controlling behavior bubble just beneath the surface of their seemingly idyllic romance. Before filmmakers Clark, who wrote the script,...

Another unlucky couple fell victim to a confusing “Place” category on Thursday night’s (February 15) Wheel of Fortune, and fans are not happy about it. The episode, part of the long-running game show’s Sweethearts Week, saw three couples facing off in a fierce competition. The three pairs were Laura and Gary Novi from Odessa, Florida, Cassie and Jeremy Rowe from Lake Stevens, Washington, and Irene and Vince Washington from Harrison, New Jersey. Things started off fairly even between the three couples, but as the episode went on, Laura and Gary pulled away from the competition. By the end of regular play, the Novis had a whopping $16,349 in cash and a trip to Ireland, which was enough to advance them to the Bonus Round. Faced with a two-word puzzle, Laura and Gary picked the additional letters “W, D, M, and I” to go with their given letters of “R, S,...

Director Nathan De Paz Habib, previously featured on Dn with co-director Debby Friday with their hybrid music video Good Luck, introduces us to another example of his experimental and surreal filmmaking in his narrative short film debut La Bicicletta (The Bicycle). With the central plot derived from una barzelletta (an old Italian joke), De Paz Habib consciously sought to create a project on which he could experiment and further develop his directorial style. La Bicicletta doesn’t follow any strict linear timeline, nor does it adhere to a single style which helps to place us in the emotive memories of a young woman as she dissects the problematic aspects of her friendship with her best friend. Premiering on Directors Notes today, we spoke to De Paz Habib about visually creating scenes which dove into the depth of the characters’ bond, the considered preparation that went into the film’s all...

Constellation is a twisting thriller series set in space that airs on Apple TV Plus. From The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Noomi Rapace appears in this sci-fi drama as Jo, an astronaut who returns to Earth after a space incident, only to discover that her life has changed.
She’s left with little choice except to reveal the dark history of space exploration and try to get back what she lost.

Noomi Rapace Put Her Life Back Again in ‘Constellation’ Trailer. The trailer opens by offering more details about Jo’s life, particularly how she has a family eagerly awaiting her back on Earth.
Their reunion might seem friendly, but the tone stays strange, pointing to how Jo’s life has changed since the accident. Her life is not missing parts due to memory loss—not really. In contrast, Jo’s life is entirely different, even regarding her daughter.

Yaya (played by Camryn Jones) just wants to walk to school with her boyfriend. Living on the South Side of Chicago in a house overflowing with family members, the only thing that gets the exhausted teen out of bed every morning is knowing Dre (Travis Wolfe Jr.) will be waiting on her stoop. The only issue: her protective brother, Mouse (Victor Musoni), doesn’t approve. He thinks her friends aren’t a good influence — they show up late to school too often, eat too much junk food, and don’t pay enough attention to their surroundings. Mouse, clearly, just wants his little sister to be safe, get good grades, and live a better life, but by intimidating Dre, he’s unwittingly snuffing out her one spark of joy — joy that manifests itself via her favorite hobby: dance.

Believe it or not, the dreadful 2004 Catwoman was not the movie Warner Bros. set out to make. After Michelle Pfeiffer‘s stunning turn as Selina Kyle in Batman Returns, nobody initially thought, “Yes, but what if we get some terrible French commercial director to shoot a story about a different cat lady fighting a budget-Emma Frost like it’s a perfume ad?” In the truth, the Catwoman project went through many iterations, not landing on the laughable mess that stalled the career of Halle Berry (who’s actually quite good in Catwoman) until the early 2000s.
Recently, Batman Returns screenwriter Daniel Waters shared some ideas about the original treatment for a Catwoman spinoff that director Tim Burton himself wanted to make after his Batman sequel. As revealed to IndieWire after a screening in Los Angeles in December, Burton had no intention of continuing the superhero route for his Catwoman film.

Norby Walters, the onetime music agent who ran the annual “Night of 100 Stars” Oscar party for years and hosted an iconic low-stakes poker party for actors, died December 12. He was 91. His son, Walters Media Group founder and former Bold Films CEO Gary Michael Walters, confirmed the news but did not provide details.
Born Norbert Meyer, in 1952 Walters started booking jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz into his father’s bar.
Walters and his brother, Walter took over a place from their father and dubbed it Norby & Walter’s Bel Air, but its sign had no ampersand — which led to the name Walters would use during his career. He later took over a failing nightclub located next to the world-famous Copacabana, dubbed it Norby Walters’s Supper Club, and attracted a who’s who of boldfaced New York City names.

In the last two years the documentary landscape has shifted from the golden age of docus to the corporate age of docus, making it increasingly difficult for nonfiction filmmakers with projects that aren’t about celebrities or true crimes to find distribution. But HBO Documentary Films is proving that despite being part of a corporate conglomerate, it still wants content that doesn’t necessarily pertain to bold faced names, salacious murders or cults.

Lest we ever forget it for a moment, Mia Isaac is a tour de force.
She has this innate ability to pull you in the second she appears on screen, and that's largely why following Covey's journey during the flashbacks is inarguably the series at its strongest and best.
As a result, Black Cake Season 1 Episode 7 was one of the series' best installments, as it mirrored the Black Cake series premiere in centering young Covey again and pushing the present-day characters to the fringes as needed.
It also marked closure regarding the audio tapes and Covey/Eleanor Bennett telling her children her story.

She has this innate ability to pull you in the second she appears on screen, and that's largely why following Covey's journey during the flashbacks is inarguably the series at its strongest and best.

Stars: Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negga, Alexander Skarsgård, André Holland | Written by Rebecca Hall, Nella Larsen | Directed by Rebecca Hall
After a career delivering tremendous performances, Rebecca Hall steps behind the camera for her feature debut as writer/director. Unfolding in black-and-white from the opening logos, the story begins with muffled voices and smudged visuals before things become clearer, and viewers witness Passing unfold in a 4:3 aspect ratio. While these visual choices give this film a unique identity, it also reflects the story as the boxier frame captures the characters’ constraints, while the monochrome look reflects how nothing is black and white with the characters.
In 1920s New York City, Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson) has a chance encounter in a hotel dining room with childhood friend, Clare Bellew (Ruth Negga). While both are light-skinned Black women, Clare “passes” as white to the point that her wealthy white husband, John (Alexander...

For a generation of moviegoers, the Farrelly Brothers name means something. Specifically, it means a very pointed combination of gross-out comedy and emotional sentiment — films that are more than happy to dabble in literal excrement and ask you honestly shed a little tear over the characters embarking on some kind of emotional journey. The headlines and the buzz are always about the nastiest gags and grossest moments (she puts what in her hair?), but audiences often who showed up hoping to be appalled often found themselves lulled into something weirdly gentle and sweet. Sometimes, the combination doesn't work at all and the result is an unpleasant, tonal disaster. But when it does work? Well, that's when you get something that feels very specific to Peter and Bobby Farrelly, two of the most memorably mainstream, lowbrow auteurs to emerge from the '90s.
Because there are such extreme highs and lows across the Farrelly filmography,...

Pierce Brosnan looks unrecognizable as the D-Day veteran, Artie Crawford, for the upcoming Sky Cinema film, The Last Rifleman, in a newly released photo.
With the help of prosthetics and a gray wig, the 70-year-old actor had been given the appearance of a 92-year-old man.
Brosnan’s character wears a uniform covered in war medals while also using a walking stick.
The character was inspired by the experiences of the late Royal Navy Lieutenant Bernard Jordan.
In June 2014, this veteran became famous for escaping his care home at 89 years of age just so he could commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Normandy landings.
Jordan lied to the staff by stating that he was just “‘popping down to the shops.'”
He made it to France by taking a train at Brighton Railway station to Portsmouth before taking a ferry to France.
The World War II veteran managed to attend the anniversary.

This post contains spoilers for "The Nun II."
It's difficult to encapsulate just how huge The Conjuring Universe truly is. The third successful horror franchise launched by James Wan (following "Insidious" and "Saw") has expanded into three distinct tracks of horror stories: "The Conjuring" films, following Ed and Lorraine Warren; the "Annabelle" films, centered on the titular doll; and "The Nun" films, centered on the demon Valak. "The Nun II" is the latest addition to the series, a massive hit at the box office and a film that laid the groundwork for what feels like the inevitable climax of the decades-spanning story. It feels like we're heading toward a final chapter like The Avengers, but with demons, possessed artifacts, and Patrick Wilson singing Elvis songs.

There are definitely some benefits to watching horror movies at home. For one thing, it's easy to hide under the covers when jump scares get overwhelming, or to pause for popcorn if you need to break the tension (or just really want some popcorn). In the case of the self-referential and foreshadowing-heavy Conjuring Universe, though, catching the latest movie on digital and home media also comes with one extra added benefit: the potential for frame-by-frame Easter egg hunting.
There are Easter eggs aplenty hidden throughout the interconnected franchise that began with "The Conjuring" in 2013, and apparently "The Nun II" is no exception. /Film's Bj Colangelo recently spoke with the director of the latest Conjuring-verse chiller, Michael Chaves, to get the scoop on some of the movie's most rewarding hidden references. Fair warning if you haven't seen "The Nun II" yet: Chaves talks about some of these hidden references in detail,...

“The Nun II” has set a streaming release date on Max just in time for Halloween weekend. The New Line horror sequel will hit Max on Friday, Oct. 27 so those looking for a new horror movie to watch before the spooky holiday will be in luck.
The latest film in the “Conjuring” universe and direct sequel to 2018’s “The Nun” opened in theaters on Sept. 8, so it marks a quick move to streaming even in the wake of the film’s box office success. It’s pulled in $257 million at the worldwide box office so far, which is under the $365 million that the first “Nun” movie pulled in but not too shabby for a budget under $40 million.
The streaming release no doubt serves to bolster Max’s visibility during a time of increased movie-watching as the Halloween season coincides with a surge in demand for horror films.

New Line’s The Nun II, one of the few bright spots at the fall box office rocked by the actors strikes, will hit Max on Oct. 27. That premiere date is after the pic’s 50-day theatrical window.
The Michael Chaves directed sequel in the Conjuring universe opened to $32.6M and through yesterday counts $84.4M at the domestic box office and over $258M worldwide. In a deal unveiled at Mipcom, Movistar Plus+ International, the prominent Spanish pay TV/SVOD platform’s sales division, announced a key sale to HBO Latin America of series “La Mesías,” hailed as the buzziest title at the San Sebastian Film Festival in September.
The series is written, directed and produced by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo of Suma Content, best known for their series “Veneno,” an HBO Max U.S. pickup, as well as “Paquita Salas,” sold to Netflix.
“La Mesías” marks the return of this creative duo, three years after their last release as directors and screenwriters, according to Movistar Plus+ Int’l.

The Spanish world premiere that made the most waves at this year’s San Sebastian Festival was not a film but a series, “La Mesías,” written, directed and produced by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo.
“A masterpiece,” proclaimed Spanish website Cineconñ; national newspaper El Mundo greeted it as the first work of maturity from hugely unconventional auteurs.
Now bound for Mipcom, where the series receives a market screening, “La Mesías” says much about the ambitions of its creators and its backer, Movistar Plus.
In 2017, Telefónica-owned Movistar Plus, Spain’s biggest SVOD-pay TV player, rocked the San Sebastian Festival with “The Plague,” then the biggest series ever made in Spain.
“La Mesías” follows Ambrossi and Calvo’s overseas breakout “Veneno,” which was picked up by HBO Max for the U.S. market, and made Ambrossi and Calvo among the most-courted young showrunners in Europe.

Turning on real-life 1990s trans icon Cristina Ortiz, “Veneno” established Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo as leading LGBTQ directors in Spain.
In “La Mesías,” they bring their hallmark visceral sense of diversity to each and every scene and episode, which lends them their large distinction.

In the series, protagonist Enric (Roger Casamajor) is eviscerated emotionally by his childhood trauma which involves his fanatically religious mother. Spanning nine films in total, “The Conjuring” franchise, including “The Nun II,” is as vast as it is complex.
The story that kicked off with supernatural investigating couple Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) has since expanded into a series of “Conjuring” movies and spinoffs, all set at different points in a timeline that begins all the way back in the 1300s. The events in the three proper “Conjuring” films actually do occur in the order they were released, but the spinoffs and prequels, including “The Nun” and the “Annabelle” films, make the timeline much more complicated.

The Nun II is an gothic supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves and released in 2023. The screenplay is written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Akela Cooper, based on a story by Cooper. This movie serves as a sequel to the 2018 film, The Nun, and is the eighth installment in The Conjuring Universe franchise. The cast includes Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, and Bonnie Aarons, who reprise their roles from the first film, along with Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell joining the cast.
As a good sequel, “The Nun II” once again focuses on the elements that made the first one successful: lots of scares and a gothic atmosphere (they say now) with a photography style that emphasizes light and shadow.
Caravaggio’s tenebrism seems to still have its followers, as similar themes are combined, although this time with fewer distorted angles and more scares.
