Two of the most anticipated Japanese films showing at the Venice Film Festival this year — Kei Ishikawa’s mystery drama A Man (2022) and a digitally remastered version of Yasujirō Ozu’s timeless classic A Hen in the Wind (1948) — share a uniquely curious distinction. The two Japanese films, separated by 74 years, were both written in the exact same room.
Ozu, one of the great masters of cinema history, famously spent long stretches of the 1940s and 1950s — his most productive period — residing and working at Chigasaki-kan, a small ryokan, or traditional Japanese inn, located on a quiet stretch of coast to the southwest of Tokyo. Ozu’s hideaway within the inn was its “niban no oheya,” or “room 2.” A modest space befitting an Ozu drama, the room was designed in Japan’s traditional washitsu style: tatami mats, a simple floor-level table and sliding shoji...

In their hometown of Osaka, a group of teenagers celebrates their graduation from school and their road into adulthood. Led by loudmouth Riichi (Koji Chihara), the three boys try to make ends meet collecting debts from local businesses, offering their services as bodyguards and eventually attempting to take on more solid jobs when, for example, Kotetsu (Kyosuke Yabe) gets a job as a bartender.
However, especially Riichi struggles with the reality after school. While his girlfriend manages Ryoko (Sarina Suzuki) to get a job at a local hair salon, his attempts at a regular job fail. When he cheats on her with a childhood friend of his, he becomes estranged from Ryoko as well as the other friends. Eventually, the separation and the fact he is beaten up several times by his former enemies, result in Riichi being severely depressed and lacking the necessary drive to move on in life.

The official website for Kazuyuki Izutsu’s Ōgon wo Daite Tobe has been relaunched with a new teaser trailer. Note: I have no idea if “Fly With the Gold” is the actual English title or just a literal translation they’re slapping on things because they think it looks cool. The latter happens a lot.
The film stars Satoshi Tsumabuki as Koda, a supplier for radical extremists and criminals who’s approached by an old university friend named Kitagawa (Tadanobu Asano) with a plan to steal 1.5 billion yen in gold bars from a vault under the main branch of Sumida Bank.
Kitagawa puts together a team consisting of a banking system engineer named Noda (Kenta Kiritani), a foreign spy posing as an engineering exchange student named Momo (Changmin of Tvxq), Kitagawa’s younger brother Haruki (Junpei Mizobata), and a former elevator technician called Jiichan - literally “Grandpa” (Toshiyuki Nishida). After some further planning,...
