Director Sabrina Jaglom follows in the tradition of Heathers and Election by tapping into a particular species of female neurosis turned toxic, but in a refreshingly authentic way
Olivia is a senior at an exclusive all-girls high school in an unidentified but posh-looking US suburb. Clearly hothoused from a young age by her bougie parents, Olivia’s one burning, all-consuming ambition is to get into Stanford University. To that end, she has turned herself into hard-working, top-stream student, captain of the debating society and all that jazz. She has even bought sweatshirts with the name Stanford emblazoned across the chest. But she has checked the numbers and knows that the admissions board will probably only take two or three students from her school, so there is a lot of unspoken tension between her and other students who want to attend this vastly expensive west coast university.
That produces horrible pressure for these young minds,...

Cohen Media Group hopes a Spanish film can dent the tough market for foreign language fare, Bleecker Street is out with a hostage drama and A24 presents Owen Kline’s directorial debut about a teenage cartoonist as the arthouse market flexes more muscle than it has in weeks.
The dearth of new releases itself nudged some distributors to grab a window now before a more crowded fall, including Uar’s supersized specialty opening of the Idris Elba, Tilda Swinton-starring Three Thousand Years Of Longing on 2,436 screens, considerably wider than originally anticipated.
George Miller’s fantasy fairytale, written by Miller and Augusta Gore, is based on the 1994 A.S. Byatt short story ‘The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye’. Swinton is a complacent academic, Elba is the Djinn (a kind of spirit genie) she encounters at a conference in Istanbul in the 2022 Cannes Film Festival out-of-competition entry. Deadline review here.

"I hope you guys aren't mixed up with this stuff. This is a whole other level of mixed up." AMC / Creator+ have revealed an official trailer for an indie paranoia thriller titled Jane, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Sabrina Jaglom. Not to be confused with the other "Jane" films this year - Call Jane and The Janes (about the underground abortion network in the 70s) - this is something else. Seemingly perfect high school senior, Olivia, struggles with grief from the recent loss of a friend. When she gets deferred from her dream college she begins to spiral and experiences a series of increasingly frightening panic attacks. In an attempt to regain some sense of control, she embarks on a social media rampage against those that stand in the way of her success but, as things escalate, she is forced to confront – and soon embrace – her darkest impulses to get ahead.

Chlöe has been on fire in the recording studio, turning up the heat with hits like "Have Mercy" - her first solo single - and "Treat Me," which have earned her a top spot on our summer playlists. Since she first teased her debut solo album in 2021, Chlöe has been hard at work perfecting her personal sound - but not without teasing the project on social media. It's "wayyy too hot to handle," she tells Popsugar.
The untitled album, which has been in the works since 2019, will be Chlöe's first release since "Ungodly Hour," her second studio album as one half of music duo Chloe x Halle with her sister, Halle Bailey. "I put a pause on it so my sister and I could promote 'Ungodly Hour,' but in between, I was in my bedroom creating at night," she told Billboard in August 2021. "I'd be making my own beats...

“Jane,” a feature film from startup studio Creator Plus, has halted production after two Covid cases on set in New Mexico.
The film stars Madelaine Petsch (“Riverdale”), who is also a producer. None of the cast has tested positive, according to the company. The shutdown is expected to last for six days.
In a statement, Creator Plus said that the cases were detected “while adhering to strict safety daily testing protocols.”
“As a result, we immediately implemented a six-day shutdown, which started yesterday (as a half day) from the initial case we received,” the company said in a statement on Wednesday. “All lead actors are continuing to test negative despite exposure. We’re working closely with our SAG representatives, the CDC and the All Together New Mexico ‘Covid Safe Practices for Individuals and Employers’ while upholding SAG’s Return to Work agreement.”
Sabrina Jaglom is directing the film, which marks her feature debut.
