Ghoulies is not the Gremlins rip-off its reputation suggests. The two films were in production at the same time, but budgetary issues delayed the release of Ghoulies. Although it likely benefited from Gremlins‘ success, the similarities begin and end with diminutive monsters. Ghoulies II actually shares more in common with Gremlins, as the first Ghoulies leans more — arguably too much — into the fantasy realm.
From producer Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, the 1985 horror-comedy is directed by Luca Bercovici (Rockula) from a script he co-wrote with producer Jefery Levy. At just over 80 minutes, the film doesn’t waste time trying to make sense of its messy plot.
When Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) inherits an old manor from the father he never knew, he does what any 20-something with newfound freedom would do: throw a party. Something wills Jonathan to perform a ritual from an old book he finds among his father’s occult paraphernalia,...

“Where were you in ’76?” The newest entrant in Criterion’s 4K disc club is Richard Linklater’s rowdy but affectionate ode to high school nostalgia, Texas-style. It’s a Bicentennial summer update of American Graffiti and in just 14 years the entire face of America has changed. Youth idealism is dead and the main rule is to avoid plans made by parents. Linklater’s graduation night sticks with kids free to roam on their own and have a wild time. He has a terrific way with performances that include a string of memorable faces that became much better-known, plus a couple of future stars.

The Halloween franchise gets a lot of attention during the month of October, and while fans are revisiting the past films and watching the new one, Halloween Ends (read our review Here), in theatres and on the Peacock streaming service, we decided this was a good time to dig into the making of one of the Halloween films with a new episode of our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series. The movie being covered this time around is my personal favorite of the sequels, 1988’s Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (watch it Here) – and you can find out all about the film’s development and production by checking out the video embedded above!
Directed by Dwight H. Little from a screenplay by Alan B. McElroy, Halloween 4 has the following synopsis, lifted from the back of the VHS release:
Ten years ago he changed the face of Halloween.

Sasha Jenson was one of the kids that you probably fell in love with watching Dazed and Confused. He did have a career before and after that but it wasn’t quite the career he that would elevate him to the kind of heights that several of his costars would see as the years went on. Sasha kind of came and went when it came to his roles on TV and in movies, almost as a glorified extra or someone that was thrown into the mix to see how he could do. The positive thing was that is acting wasn’t that

I can't remember if I saw Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused when Universal unceremoniously dumped it into only 183 theaters on September 24, 1993, but seeing how it topped out at 191 theaters I have to assume I was among the masses that caught it on video shortly thereafter. No matter when I first saw it, I do remember when I fell in love with it. It was 1995, my freshman year in college and while I wasn't a teen of the '70s, it didn't take much to find a connection. My college roommate and I would damn near have this film playing on a loop, and while I can't speak for him, for me it hit home because while the film is centering on a junior high student's initiation into high school, I had a similar experience transitioning from high school to college. While many aspects of Dazed and Confused are teenage dreamworld scenarios,...

So the big question everyone has been wondering since the announcement of the next Halloween film was whether or not it would continue on in the universe set up by Rob Zombie. Recently Collider caught up with Malek Akkad at the Saturn Awards, who shed some light on the subject.
“I can’t talk about it too much right now," says Akkad. "It will definitely keep elements and bring in new elements. But I really want to bring it back to kind of like, the classic – because the last one got a little dark – I want to bring it back to the classic Friday night horror film that people will really like.”
When asked about the ill-fated Halloween 3D, which was announced a couple of years back...
"Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier did a script. The next day after the last one came out, we were back in production for Halloween 3D.
