Center Theatre Group presented the North American premiere of Matthew Bourne’s Romeo + Juliet on Wednesday evening, and when it ended, the entire Ahmanson Theatre audience was on its feet offering a standing ovation. After the dance company had taken final bows — with Paris Fitzpatrick’s Romeo and Monique Jonas’ Juliet receiving the love while covered in (spoiler alert!) blood-drenched white ensembles — Melissa McCarthy and Adam Shankman sat back down in their orchestra seats in row F.
The good friends, who arrived together, proceeded to stay seated for another 10 minutes or so to process what they’d seen through tear-filled eyes. “I just love a comedy,” Shankman said to The Hollywood Reporter in the lobby moments later. He was kidding, of course, as the show offers a surprising, dramatic and somewhat violent twist to the classic story of star-crossed lovers.

Elsa Zylberstein, the French actor-producer whose timely movie “Simone: Woman of a Century” was recently released in the U.S., has signed with CAA for representation.
The actor’s performance as Simone Veil, an Auschwitz survivor who became a feminist icon and human rights activist, earned critical praise and struck a chord with French audiences, becoming one of the highest-grossing French films of 2022.
Distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films in the U.S., Olivier Dahan’s biopic sheds light on how Veil became a revered figure within France’s male-dominated political world after surviving the camps, championing the 1975 law that legalized abortion in France. The Holocaust Museum in L.A. will host a special screening of the movie on Nov. 29 in the presence of Zylberstein. A similar event is also being organized in Washington, D.C.

So Randy reinvents himself as the buff and masculine Del, who forgoes his beloved show tunes, nail polish and unicorn bedsheets to capture the heart of the hunky camper. Exclusive: Billy Porter has come on board to direct the feature adaptation of Camp for HBO Max and Warner Bros. Oscar winner Dan Jinks is producing through The Dan Jinks Company, and Robert O’Hara is rewriting the screenplay by Kit Williamson, which is based on the YA novel by Lev Rosen.
The film follows 16-year-old Randy Kapplehoff, who loves spending the summer at Camp Outland, a camp for queer teens. It’s where he met his best friends. It’s where he takes to the stage in the big musical. And it’s where he fell for Hudson Aaronson-Lim – who’s only into straight-acting guys and barely knows not-at-all-straight-acting Randy even exists. Randy reinvents himself over the summer as Del, a buff, masculine and on-the-market camper. Even if it means giving up show tunes, nail polish and his unicorn bedsheets, he’s determined to get Hudson to fall for him.

Paramount Pictures has acquired the upcoming film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical “Spamalot” from Fox, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
Eric Idle, who penned the music and lyrics for the original musical, wrote the screenplay. Broadway veteran Casey Nicholaw, who choreographed the musical, is set to direct the film adaptation. Dan Jinks is producing the project with Idle. Executives Jon Gonda and Mike Ireland are overseeing the project for Paramount.
The “Spamalot” film adaptation was previously set up at Fox, but was set aside when Disney acquired Fox in 2019.
The 2005 Broadway musical “Spamalot” was adapted from the 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” a comedic parody of the King Arthur quest.
The late Mike Nichols directed the original Broadway production, which went on to receive 14 Tony Award nominations and won in three categories, including Best Musical. “Spamalot” became a commercial success and grossed more than $175 million.

Paramount Pictures is getting in on the business of Monty Python. The studio has acquired “Spamalot,” the upcoming movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical.
The film was previously set up at Fox, but the project was sidelined when Disney acquired Rupert Murdoch’s film empire in 2019.
“Spamalot,” which has been a mainstay in the theater world for years, is based on the seminal 1975 comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” Both the movie — which starred Python members Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Eric Idle — and the Broadway musical parody the legend of King Arthur, though the stage and screen versions differ plot-wise in many ways.
Casey Nicholaw, a Broadway veteran who choreographed the original “Spamalot,” as well as “The Book of Mormon,” “Aladdin” and “Mean Girls,” is directing the movie adaptation. Dan Jinks will serve as a producer, along with Eric Idle, the show’s...

The good news is the picture is fully developed, with a screenplay by Monty Python troupe member Eric Idle, with songs by Idle and John DuPrez. The director is Casey Nicholaw, who was the choreographer of the original Broadway production. Well well well, if it isn’t our old friend irony. After a year in which President Donald Trump publicly dismissed Covid-19 as something that was “going to disappear,” saying it “affects virtually nobody” and that it was a “hoax,” he and his wife Melania are now infected. This coming mere days after he mocked his presidential opponent for wearing a mask and after repeatedly holding rallies without proper safety procedures in place. It’d almost be funny… if we weren’t digging graves for 200,000 Americans (and counting!).
The world of Hollywood has, of course, been commenting on the diagnosis and the prevailing mood seems to be less sympathy and more “I told you so” with a sprinkling of “lmao.” Here’s just a selection of the responses:
In this difficult time let's be sure to show @realDonaldTrump the respect he's shown others.

Refresh for updates With a mix of sincere best wishes, karma-is-a-bitch snark, stunned disbelief and saw-it-coming hindsight, Hollywood and the Beltway responded quickly to the late-night news of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump testing positive for Covid-19.
“I am very surprised by the twist ending of ‘2020: Episode 3’ and I don’t see how they will be able to wrap this all up in one more episode,” tweeted actor Sean Gunn.
John Cleese drew some angry responses with his Python-esque sarcasm: “A doctor friend of mine tells me that Covid19 symptoms include delusions of grandeur, compulsive attention-seeking, extreme narcissism…”
In a less humorous mood, Ava DuVernay tweeted, “I hope this changes the discourse around this virus among the people who follow him and don’t give a damn. And in turn, who damn the rest of us. People have lost their lives. Their loved ones. And...

Disney still isn't done pumping out remakes of your favorite classics. According to Deadline, Disney is currently working with director Bill Condon on a movie musical version of A Christmas Carol, titled Marley, and there's already a script in production.
The new film will be (yet another) reimagining of the holiday classic, which tells the story of how a Christmas-hating man named Ebenezer Scrooge is spiritually transformed by a visit from the ghost of a former colleague named Jacob Marley and three Christmas spirits. It's been adapted a handful of times already, though one of the most well-known renditions is 2009's CGI version starring Jim Carrey, who played Scrooge and all three spirits. In the new version, the story will be told from Marley's point of view, hence its title.

Bill Condon is back in business with Disney, developing a musical based on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”
Oscar-winning songwriter Stephen Schwartz has written the music for the film, told from the point of view of Jacob Marley. In Dickens’ story, Marley is Ebenezer Scrooge’s deceased business partner. He warns Scrooge that he will be visited by the Ghosts of Christmases past, present and future, who will give him a chance to change his miserly ways. Dan Jinks and Greg Yolen are producing the movie, called “Marley.”
Dickens’ novella has remained popular since its first publication in 1843. It’s been adapted numerous times for the big screen, including Disney’s 2009 motion-capture version directed by Robert Zemeckis starring Jim Carrey as Scrooge. Apple won rights earlier this month for a live-action musical take on “A Christmas Carol,” toplined by Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell, with writer-directors Sean Anders and John Morris attached.

As usual, the CW made the bulk of its pilot pickups in one fell swoop, and the network is betting heavily on IP this year. It greenlighted four pilots tonight — all based on well known titles — two spinoffs of existing CW series, Riverdale and Jane the Virgin, a Nancy Drew drama and The Lost Boys reboot. The join the recently greenlighted Batwoman pilot starring Ruby Rose.
The Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene, which follows four Archie Comics characters, and telenovela anthology series Jane the Novela both hail from the creative auspices behind the original series: Jane creator/executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman, star Gina Rodriguez, exec producers Ben Silverman and director Brad Silberling. and studio CBS TV Studios, and Riverdale creator/executive producer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV.
The untitled Nancy Drew drama, inspired by the classic mysteries, comes from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire and CBS TV Studios, while The Lost Boys is from Rob Thomas’s Spondoodle, Gulfstream TV and Warner Bros TV.
I hear the CW is not done picking up pilots, with The La Complex reboot among the scripts that have been heating up. As usual, the network split its pickups down the middle between its sister studios tonight, with two orders to Wbtv and two to CBS TV Studios.
The CW originally developed a series adaptation of the iconic 1987 Warner Bros horror comedy movie The Lost Boys with Thomas writing during the 2016-17 development season. While the project didn’t go to pilot, the network brass remained very high on the title and had been looking to redevelop it. While Thomas has been busy with his Veronica Mars reboot for Hulu, a take by writer Heather Mitchell got everyone excited, and the new incarnation picked up steam this development season.
Katy Keene, centered around the budding fashionista in New York City, is the second Riverdale spinoff. The First, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, started at the CW before moving to Netflix where it has been a breakout hit. Aguirre-Sacasa, who co-wrote Katy Keene with Riverdale co-executive producer Michael Grassi, said last summer that the new offshoot is “very different from Riverdale.”
Today’s orders give Berlanti Pords. two pilots at the CW, Katy Keene and Batwoman.
Written by Jane scribe Valentina Garza and directed by Silberling, Jane the Novela is envisioned as a soapy, telenovela-inspired anthology series in the tradition of Jane the Virgin, where each season is based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane Villanueva and narrated by the author herself. The first installment takes place at a Napa Valley Vineyard.
The spinoff already had gotten a blinking green light, with the mothership’s casting directors Alyson Silverberg and Jonathan Clay Harris tapped to cast it.
Written by Noga Landau (The Magicians), the untitled Nancy Drew project is centered on 18-year-old Nancy Drew in the summer after her high school graduation.
Launching a Nancy Drew TV series has been a priority for CBS TV Studios, which has the rights to the the classic Ya mystery books originally published by Stratemeyer Syndicate and later Simon & Schuster. The studio developed two Nancy Drew series over the past three years, Drew at CBS during the 2015-16 development season, which went to pilot starring Sarah Shahi and got close to a series order, and Nancy Drew at NBC this past season. Both incarnations, from writers Tony Phelan and Joan Rater and producer Dan Jinks, were conceived as sequels to the books, with an adult Nancy Drew at the center.
Here are details about the newly picked up CW pilots:

Girls have cooties anyway, right? According to Deadline, CBS decided to pass on the "Nancy Drew" pilot starring Sarah Shahi ("Person of Interest"), because the wrong half of the population was into it. Here's how Deadline's Nellie Andreeva described the rejection:
"'Drew' is not going forward at CBS but is being shopped to other outlets by CBS TV Studios. I hear the pilot tested well but skewed too female for CBS' schedule. In the end of the day, I hear the network had no 8 Pm or 9 Pm slot available.
Written/executive produced by [Joan] Rater and [Tony] Phelan, 'Drew' stars Sarah Shahi as Nancy — now in her 30s — a detective for the NYPD where she investigates and solves crimes using her uncanny observational skills, all while navigating the complexities of life in a modern world. Anthony Edwards, Felix Solis and Rob McClure co-star in the project, also executive produced by Dan Jinks.

In The Heart of the Sea director Ron Howard has emerged as the frontrunner to helm Robert Downey Jr.’s long-gestating Pinocchio, according to The Tracking Board, with the outlet claiming that “things are expected to move quickly.”
For the longest time, it appeared that Paul Thomas Anderson would pull the strings on the Warner Bros. flick, while Tim Burton and Ben Stiller were also attached before eventually bowing out. That’s a revolving door that has seen many a writer come and go as well. In years past, Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, X-Men: Days of Future Past), Michael Mitnick (The Giver), and Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) have each taken a crack at the live-action fairytale.
From what we understand, Downey Jr. still intends to play the role of Geppetto, chronicling his tragic story as he sets out to find the whereabouts of his wayward – and totally not real – son.

They say life imitates art and for Marlon Wayans, life is exactly where he’s pulling inspiration from with his new pilot, “Marlon.” The inspired-by-real-life project will follow the struggles of a single father as he tries to tone down his inappropriate nature and co-parent with his ex-wife and polar opposite. NBC has claimed the pilot and 3 Arts Entertainment, along with Wayans Brothers Entertainment, will produce it in a yet-to-be-determined location. Rumor has it, however, that Los Angeles or Chicago will play home to the semiautobiographical project. Vickie Thomas Casting will populate the wacky comedy and round it out with a handful of remaining roles. CBS is looking to reinvent a beloved childhood classic with “Drew.” The pilot will pull from the novels following the adventures of the young Nancy Drew, the observationally endowed detective created by Edward Stratemeyer. However, the project will put its own twist on the story,...
