Following Paramore’s first two Grammy wins, Tennessee Democrat State Representative Justin Jones proposed a resolution to honor the Hayley Williams-fronted group alongside first-time Grammy winner Allison Russell.
However, while the state’s House of Representatives unanimously approved the Paramore resolution, House Republican Caucus Chair Jeremy Faison objected to the Russell resolution and kicked it back to committee.
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) earlier this week, Jones blamed the GOP members of the chamber for blocking the Russell resolution and praised the artist, who he wrote, “has worked tirelessly to foster an inclusive Nashville through her music and continues to make Black History here in Tennessee.”
In a repost, Russell thanked Jones and Tennessee State Rep. Gloria Johnson for presenting the resolution, calling it a “high honour.”
“That the Tn GOP blocked it, I take as a compliment,” Russell added. “Their bigotry, sadly, is on relentless display.

Tennessee Rep. Justin Jones (D-Nashville) sought to honor a pair of Nashville-based musical acts for their Grammy wins on Monday (February 12th) with ceremonial resolutions, but only Black singer-songwriter Allison Russell received an objection from a House Republican.
Jones brought forward two resolutions to honor Russell (Best American Roots Performance) and the band Paramore (Best Rock Album and Best Alternative Music Performance). In a procedural move, House Republican Caucus Chair Jeremy Faison (R-Cosby) objected to the Russell resolution.
According to The Tennessean, Faison’s objection meant that the resolution was sent back to committee, “where objected consent items often die.” According to House rules, no debate was required for the move, meaning that Faison was not forced to express his opposition to honoring the folk musician.
While the newspaper pointed out Russell has been a vocal critic of Tennessee Republicans for their anti-lgbtq+ community legislation, so has Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams.

When Tyler Childers was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2018 Americana Honors & Awards, he let loose with an acceptance speech for the ages, denying the very term “Americana” and pointedly declaring himself a country artist.
“As a man who identifies as a country music singer, I feel Americana ain’t no part of nothin’,” he said onstage at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium that year. “It is a distraction from the issues that we are facing on a bigger level as country music singers.”
Despite that sharply worded speech,...

Tennessee Reps. Justin Pearson and Justin Jones — the two Democratic reps who were expelled by Republicans in April as punishment for participating in a gun control protest on the House floor — officially won back their legislative seats on Thursday night, the Associated Press reported.
Jones won his race for his state House seat in Nashville, defeating Republican Laura Nelson, while Pearson won his election in Memphis, against independent candidate Jeff Johnston. Both young Black lawmakers were previously reinstated by local government officials after being ousted from the legislature, but still...

Mary Joyce’s daughter witnessed the unspeakable. “The day after the children were murdered at the school, grief therapists passed out ‘Feelings Cards‘ with faces on them to help the children identify what they were feeling,” she recalled. “My nine-year-old daughter, Monroe, who saw the shooter, the barrel of the Ar-15, and her friend get hit and die, chose the ‘Proud’ card. Puzzled, I asked her why she chose that card. She told me that she chose it because she was proud that she managed to sit so still and...

On that dreadful Monday, March 27th, when six souls lost their lives in the Covenant shooting, my father-in-law called me to break the news. “There’s been a shooting at a school in Green Hills,” he started, and I dropped to the ground. I couldn’t breathe, my head was spinning. I felt like I might have a nervous breakdown when he continued, “It’s not their school. It’s not their school.” Tears were rolling down my cheeks. My two children were at a different school in the area,...

After the Tennessee House of Representatives expelled two Black members for protesting gun violence on the House floor, those men were both reinstated — only now, as CBS late night host Stephen Colbert argued on Wednesday, they’re “heroes of a movement.” Really, Colbert joked, those Republicans should support gun reform, “because you just shot yourself.”
In case you missed it, earlier last week, Reps. Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones and Justin J. Pearson interrupted debate on the House floor by using a bullhorn to lead a protest against gun violence in the aftermath of the mass school shooting in Nashville. According to their Republican colleagues who voted to expel only Jones and Pearson on Thursday, the reps had brought “disorder and dishonor to the House of Representatives.”
On Monday, Jones got his seat back in a unanimous vote, while Pearson got his reinstated on Wednesday. So, on Wednesday night, Colbert rubbed it in.

Tennessee’s Shelby County Commission voted on Wednesday to reinstate Rep. Justin Pearson to the state’s House of Representatives. The unanimous vote came less than a week after Republicans expelled Pearson and fellow Black lawmaker Justin Jones as punishment for participating in a gun control protest on the House floor.
“The message to all the people in Nashville who decided to expel us: You can’t expel hope … You can’t expel our fight,” Jones said in a speech following the vote. “We look forward to continuing to fight,...

The Nashville Metro Council reinstated Rep. Justin Jones to his position in the Tennessee House of Representatives on Monday — just days after Republicans in the chamber voted to expel him and fellow lawmaker Justin Pearson. The pair were removed from office on Thursday by the legislature GOP supermajority as punishment for participating in a gun control protest on the House floor.

In the weeks following the mass shooting that killed six people — three of which were children — at Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, protests have sprung up from both voters and politicians over gun violence. But they’ve been largely met with anger or indifference from the state’s legislature, as John Oliver pointed out on Sunday night’s “Last Week Tonight” on HBO, calling one response “hall of fame sh—y.”
Oliver kicked off his Easter Sunday show with the segment, first calling out Republican Rep. William Lamberth for being snide with young voters who confronted him on gun reform. In a clip of Lamberth’s response, the Republican asked the people which weapon they’d rather be shot with.
“You’re not going to like my answer, and look, I’m going to say that straight up,” Lamberth said. “It’s not about this one gun. If there is...

John Oliver used the opening segment of Sunday’s Last Week Tonight to weigh in on the tragic event that took place in Tennessee last month, when three kids and three adults were killed in a school shooting.
Following the tragedy at Covenant School, a private elementary school in a Nashville suburb, on March 27, young activists took to the state Capitol to protest “the lack of response from the legislature while engaging in some catchy chants concerning Governor Bill Lee,” Oliver noted, before showing footage of the protesters repeatedly chanting, “Fuck Bill Lee!”
Replied the HBO show’s host: “Look, you can try and get clever with it. But at the end of the day, there’s just nothing like a chant that goes ‘fuck’ and then the name of the person that you’re mad at. It’s short. It’s sweet. It’s to the point. It’s...

Republicans in the Tennessee state house who voted Thursday to expel from the legislature two Black Democrats (while narrowly failing to do the same to a white colleague) were in the wrong, former Republican senator Scott Brown said Sunday on CNN State of the Union.
Brown, who represented Massachusetts from 2010 to 2013 and went on to serve as Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa during the Trump administration, urged the two sides to find “common ground” because “this is a very, very serious issue–what’s going on with gun violence around this country.

Former Tennessee state Reps. Justin J. Pearson and Justin Jones said Sunday on Meet the Press that they each plan on returning to the state legislature.
The Tennessee House of Representatives on Thursday voted to expel the two Black Democratic lawmakers, while failing by a single vote to oust Rep. Gloria Johnson, who is white. On March 30, the trio had led a protest for gun control at the House podium in light of the mass shooting three days prior at Nashville’s Covenant School. Democratic Tennessee State Rep. Gloria Johnson survived a vote to expel her from the House on Thursday — two of her colleagues, Reps. Justin Jones and Justin J. Pearson, both Black men, did not. The three lawmakers, who participated in a protest calling for gun control legislation after a school shooting in Nashville, are pointing to race as the deciding factor between the outcomes of the votes.

Republican legislators in Tennessee are aiming to expel three of their Democratic colleagues after they joined protesters demanding gun control last week, The Tennessean reports.
Tennessee House Republicans introduced resolutions to expel the three reps — Gloria Johnson of Knoxville, Justin Jones of Nashville, and Justin Pearson of Memphis — on Monday, April 3. All three passed on party-line votes of 72 to 23, and a final vote is expected to be held Thursday, April 6.
