Celebrities will invade Los Angeles this weekend for the 84th Academy Awards ceremony. Searchlights will blaze and flashbulbs will pop as Hollywood stars will descend from the heavens -- or maybe just the Malibu hills -- to touch the ground that regular Angelenos walk on each day. They'll smile and snarl our traffic. They'll toss their hair and forget to thank their husbands. They'll praise each other for their bravery, while collecting $75,000 gift bags. L.A. is accustomed to such strange invasions, of course. If you're a movie fan, you already know that L.A. has been invaded over the years by everything from giant atomic ants (Them), to buff cyborgs (The Terminator), to rampaging 3D zombies (Resident Evil: Afterlife). So Angelenos take invasions from movie stars in stride. But this weekend marks an anniversary of an invasion you might not know about: L.A.'s first alien invasion. This...

V: The Original Series, a close encounter with ham and cheese
(197 minutes, 2 parts)
Directed by Kenneth Johnson
Written by Kenneth Johnson
1983, Us, NBC
From the get go, V does itself a slight disservice. In a move that would drive even the barely conscious to leap up and yell “thief!” this two-part miniseries rolls its opening credits to a rip-off of Bernard Hermann’s inimitable theme for North by Northwest. The mischievous, whirling melodies and propulsive brass of that great score are unmistakable and no amount of tinkering and fudging and key manipulation can excise the Hermann from the music. So, as a series of largely unfamiliar faces (at least presumably unfamiliar, back in 1983) is introduced in a manner bordering on hammy, one is left with the uneasy feeling that they are in the hands of either a witless parodist or a guileless plagiarist. In light of this, some relief can...

Need a reason to start watching the remake of 'V' on ABC? One of its stars, Elizabeth Mitchell, went on 'Good Morning America' (Weekdays, 7Am on ABC) this morning to persuade you.
And if you were hoping she'd say something about how well it compares to the original Kenneth Johnson-created series, or how it's the best sci-fi show on TV, well, she was a bit more honest and modest in her appraisement.
After discussing her role on 'Lost,' Mitchell was asked why people should watch 'V.' She answered with a kind of golly-gee-gosh enthusiasm. "Cuz it's really fun," she said, "and there's lots of beautiful guys on it... and women! I don't know. It's great fun. It's a popcorn show. It's nice to lose yourself every once in awhile."
You probably won't see that review quoted in the commercials. But...

Chicago – Here’s the sort of self-important primetime drama that tries so hard to be a bona fide event that it quickly grows irrelevant. After ABC reduced its episode order from thirteen to ten, it became clear that the second season of “V” could easily be its last if it fails to generate sufficient interest or increase flagging ratings. Lingering fans will be pleased to know that tonight’s premiere episode holds considerable promise.
While the first season got bogged down in the complexities of its plot, the second season opener is taut and compelling from beginning to end, tightening the story after a saggy setup. The show’s best moments are its all-too-brief encounters between two powerful female characters, each sporting a tantalizing poker face. As FBI counter-terrorism agent Erica, Elizabeth Mitchell (“Lost”) looks every bit as flawless as the “peaceful” alien invaders led by Anna (Morena Baccarin). The...

Stars: Morenna Baccarin, Elizabeth Mitchell, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, Laura Vandervoort, Scott Wolf | Created by Kenneth Johnson | Directed by Yves Simoneau, Fred Toye, David Barrett
Classic 80s sci-fi series V gets the reboot treatment with this series that originally aired on ABC in the States and SyFy here in the UK. And whilst this is V, this is not your fathers V. This new iteration really is the epitome of the very Hollywood concept of reboot – this is not a mere remake, it takes the same core idea as the original series but builds an entire new show around it, one that feels alot more relevant to todays post 9/11 world. Out are the analogies and parallels with World War 2 and the ideas of totalitarinism and communism, and in are the more modern themes of terrorism and the “alien” as invader.

Kenneth Johnson set out to produce a television miniseries with allegorical elements to the way humanity surrendered to the forceful appeal of the Third Reich – except for an underground resistance that proved to save the world for freedom. His initial V miniseries on NBC was filled with memorable characters, some spooky reveals and was quite effective. The sequel mini wasn’t bad but then Johnson was gone but NBC wanted a weekly series and that was a train wreck. Since then, Johnson and the networks have danced around reviving the story of humanity’s struggle to control its destiny in the face of overwhelming alien forces. When it was clear the creator wasn’t going to see things his way, he turned his premise into a turgid and frankly, not very good novel while Warner Bros. moved ahead without him and that may have been for the best.

Chicago – Why do so many modern TV dramas fail? I suspect that part of the reason lies in the fact that a lot of these shows bend over backwards to be a major television event before they’ve earned that right. They cloak themselves in faux commentary merely so they can become mechanical fodder for water cooler discussion the morning after. That’s why the vast majority of new TV dramas might as well be called, “The Event.”
The most interesting thing about “V” is that it ended up becoming an entirely different event than the one it was intended to be. I had fairly cautious but high hopes for the re-imagining of .V. when it aired on ABC. It had a fairly strong cast, some fairly good writers and a killer premise, which was borrowed much from the Kenneth Johnson original, but updated for today.s audience. However as the series moved forward my hopes for the show were dashed. I started out really wanting to like the show, but as it carried forward it became more and more soap operish with moronic storylines such as Anna Laying eggs. I mean come on. You have a whole fleet of ships filled with your own kind and your Queen Visitor Anna has to lay eggs in order to breed your...

Actor Joel Gretsch has been making the rounds in the televised science fiction world since Steven Spielberg’s Taken miniseries back in 2002. Since then, we’ve gotten Joel in The 4400, Journeyman and the film Push. Gretsch can now be seen as Father Jack Landry on ABC’s V. We recently got to talk to Joel about his role on the show, his ties to the world of sci-fi, and even got a response to a question that fanboys and girls have been asking for years.
The Flickcast: Starting off, what can you tell me about the things coming up on V?
Joel Gretsch: Wow, what a question. [laughs]. Lots of things. It’s really ramping up. Scott Rosenbaum, the showrunner, is writing a lot of fast, neck-breaking reveals, and you’re going to learn a lot of things of things about where each character comes from, why they are who they are.

Sneak Peek two new posters, promoting the return, after a brief 'production hiatus', of ABC TV's Vancouver-lensed update of the 1980's 'reptilian agenda' TV series "V". Production resumed in Vancouver January 2010, on the remaining 9 episodes in the 13-episode season order. The show returns to ABC March 30.
"We always intended to break the show up into 'pods' to make it more of an event," said ABC entertainment president Steve McPherson.
The new show debuted November 3, 2009, as a 're-imagining' of the 1983 miniseries created by Kenneth Johnson, chronicling the arrival on Earth of a technologically advanced alien species who have come "...to serve mankind..." on a dinner platter.
"V" stars Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Scott Wolf, executive produced by Scott Rosenbaum, Scott Peters, and Jace Hall.
On the first episode spaceships appear over 29 major cities throughout the world, as 'Anna' (Baccarin), leader of the extra-terrestrial 'Visitors' claims to come in peace.

Wouldn't it be cool if one of the cast members of from V: The Original joined the cast of ABC's V? According to The V Files, that just might happen. Jane Badler, who is perhaps best known for her role as Diana, the chief antagonist in the 1983 science fiction miniseries V and its sequels, is in talks of appearing on Kenneth Johnson's latest alien series.

Back in 2003, Ronald Moore and David Eick beat the odds when they took Glenn Larson’s Battlestar Galactica television series and breathed new life into it. To the surprise of a great many people, their efforts trapped lightning in a bottle.
Now, Scott Peters, Jace Hall, Steve Pearlman and Jeffrey Bell are attempting to perform the very same miracle with Kenneth Johnson’s 1983 V franchise. As with Galactica, V had its followers and detractors. And, as with that former series, the question arises as to what the people responsible for this revival on ABC will do to tweak and update the concept.
My immediate impression is that modern CGI has made it easier to render an image of giant spaceships hovering over the world’s major cities. Perhaps the effort has become too easy. One of the enduring icons from the original series was of the giant Visitor spacecraft bearing down on Earth while,...

ABC's 'V' stole the ratings spotlight yesterday with a win that few could have predicted. Attracting a healthy ~13.9 Million live viewers, V also claimed victory in the fight for largest percentage of viewers between 18 – 49 – the age range that excites potential advertisers. ABC Decided to air V a little early, just in time for November sweeps – a move that will obviously please the bean-counters at the network when it comes time to book advertising for V's March return.
A contentious production cast a shadow over V's early release. Initially scheduled to run mid-season, ABC scheduled an initial pod of four episodes to air in November. There were reports of creative differences behind the scenes and ultimately V production was shut down for a couple of weeks while the network reportedly stepped in to arbitrate – apparently resulting in the addition of Scott Rosenbaum as the new show runner. ABC's reboot of Kenneth Johnson's '80s miniseries V (which originally aired on NBC) debuted last night, and for the most part, it was pretty entertaining.
In less than an hour, writer/exec producer Scott Peters (The 4400) sets up the gambit—visitors from another planet who come to Earth in search of natural resources, promising peace and prosperity, and quickly polarize humanity into those who are taken in by the Visitors' claims of benevolence, and those who immediately distrust them.
Whether wisely or not, Peters chose to be very economical with time and got things off to a blistering start. Consequently, the entire setup happens within the first installment. Unlike the original '80s show, which took more time to reveal the Visitors' true nature, the new series took us from arrival, to suspicion, to resistance, to revelation about the aliens' reptilian nature, all in the first episode.

Episode Title: "Pilot"
Written By: Scott Peters (teleplay) & Kenneth Johnson (story)
Synopsis: Men, women and children all around the world are shocked and awed by the sudden arrival of the Visitors, an alien race that appears throughout Earth by way of massive hovercrafts. The various ships all echo the same projected message from Anna (Morena Baccarin), the leader of the V's: "We are of peace, always."
But discoveries over the course of the next several weeks lead some to realize that the Visitors do not come in peace, nor is their arrival as sudden as most people think — indeed, the Visitors have been among us for quite some time, and their intentions are anything but peaceful.
Plot/Pacing: Alien invasions are commonplace in the realm of science fiction, so it's really more a question of execution than it is originality. In the case of "V," I thought the pilot worked...

ABC's V pilot kicks off tomorrow night, and we've got a few goodies to whet your appetite until then, including a new promo trailer and several international marketing images for the series that are kind of fun. You can check out all of it below.
It's been more than 25 years since V first aired back in the '80s, but anticipation for this rebooted property is high, and critics have been praiseworthy of the pilot.
Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost) stars as the show's new heroine, doleful FBI agent Erica Evans. She's the series' chief protagonist, a status she shares with the slightly more buoyant, but ultimately no less distraught Father Jack (Joel Gretsch), a Catholic priest undergoing a crisis of faith. Scott Wolf (Party of Five) joins the cast as an ambitious TV journalist.

Actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi failed to show up in court on Monday to face felony charges of failing to pay a $10,000 (£6,600) hotel bill.
The couple was taken into custody in Marfa, Texas last month after a California judge issued an arrest warrant, citing the outstanding bill from the luxury San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara.
The Quaids were released after each posting $20,000 (£13,300) bail and they are now facing three felony charges of allegedly burglarising and defrauding the hotel owner.
Their lawyer claims they had intended to settle the bill after leaving the resort but it got lost in the post when they moved house.
The bill has now reportedly been paid in full, but charges against the couple have not been dropped. They were due to appear in court on 19 October, but they rang the District Attorney's office on Friday to cancel the appearance.
The Quaids' attorney, Ken Johnson, said the pair "just couldn't make it Monday - that it was too soon."
A court appearance has been scheduled for next Monday, Carter says, "I have begun the very lengthy process of preparing the extradition paperwork for the Quaids."...

First a production stoppage, and now ABC seems to be rethinking its plan on how it will broadcast the remake of "V." An ABC spokeswoman told Entertainment Weekly that while "V" will indeed premiere on the network in November, it will be just four episodes that will run during sweeps, and then not return again until March when the Winter Olympics are over. Sound like more problems for the remake of the Kenneth Johnson classic? ABC says no. They had planned to air the show in "pod" format to create event programming, the network told EW. However, the news comes on the heels that the two-week hiatus that began earlier this month to help fix some creative issues will extend another four weeks, meaning production likely won't resume until around the time the first episodes air Nov. 3. That ...

It's the first TV Snippets of September—and the beginning of Labor Day weekend. Because most of us are either on vacation, barbeque-ing, or otherwise having an excuse to do very little this weekend, TV seems to be doing the same thing. Many shows that are coming to an end took this week off and will return next week so, along with the first premieres, the Fall season is basically upon us. Fox's So You Think You Can Dance premieres this Wednesday, September 9th, at 8:00 Pm followed by the premiere of Glee at 9:00 Pm.

After seeing the V pilot at Comic-Con, I’ve been looking forward to the show ever since, but man, I’m really not liking how ABC and their parent company Warner Bros. is trying to screw over original creator Kenneth Johnson in regards to properly crediting him on the show. Wtf, ABC? Stop being dicks. The hullabaloo has been chronicled over at Airlock Alpha, but here’s the down and dirty: ABC and the WB are trying to maintain that their new V show is so different from the one Kenneth Johnson created in the ’80s, that they aren’t required to properly credit him on the show. As in, they don’t want to acknowledge Johnson in the show’s credits at all. Which is pure bull crap. Fortunately, the Writer’s Guild of America has done the right thing and ruled in favor of Johnson, concluding that the...

Production officially shuts down Wednesday on the ABC series "V" for a couple weeks while some creative issues are cleared up. One thing that is for certain, however: The new "V" will retain the creation credit for Kenneth Johnson. Johnson's connection to the ABC series was maintained earlier this week through an arbitration hearing hosted by the Writers Guild of America after Warner Bros. Television claimed the new show, headed by "The 4400's" Scott Peters, was so different from the original, the studio didn't need to include Johnson's name in the credits. "The WGA informed my office yesterday that the arbiters had ruled that the new series is indeed a remake," Johnson told Airlock Alpha. "I am told that because of that decision, my 'created by' credit will be reinstated and locked ...

Warner Bros. will bring the production of "V" to a halt on Wednesday, but why that is happening is something that is being asked and gossiped about since the announcement was made. The studio, which is looking to air "V" in November on ABC, said the two-week shutdown was nothing more than a chance to help the writers refresh themselves creatively, taking advantage of a later premiere date than normal. But a fan blog known as Ilana's "V" Page said there was more to the shutdown than meets the eye. The Writers Guild of America, the site reported, was hearing a dispute between Warner Bros. and original "V" creator Kenneth Johnson that would decide whether or not Johnson would receive a credit on the new series. "One of my super reliable sources has just informed me that the Writers ...
