John Carpenter's 1978 film "Halloween" begins with a prologue in 1963 wherein a six-year-old Michael Myers (Will Sandin), with no discernible motivation, takes a knife from his family kitchen, brings it upstairs, and slays his big sister Judith (Sandy Johnson). Michael was immediately taken to a mental asylum where he didn't speak a word for 15 years. His psychiatrist Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasance) tried to reach through to Michael, aiming to discern why he might have killed his sister, but ultimately found that Michael was merely, irretrievably evil. Naturally, in 1978, Michael escaped the asylum and returned to his childhood home in Haddonfield, Illinois.
There is a notable scene wherein Dr. Loomis visits the grave of Judith Myers in 1978, only to find that the tombstone had been dug up out of the ground and stolen. The tombstone will reappear late in the film when Michael, now wearing a mask and committing multiple murders,...

Stars: Diane Franklin, Graham Cole, Carolyn Pickles, Joe Acres, Dawn Perllman, Stuart Morris, Charlotte Grice, Sandy Johnson | Written by Aiden Truss | Directed by Aaron Truss
When director Aaron Truss got in touch regarding checking out his latest film, the short Pareidolia, I jumped in feet first with a resounding yes. Why? Well, Truss had produced a great documentary on the VHS era, Cult of VHS, and this short film starred one of my all-time favourite actresses Diane Franklin… a performer whose roles in Better Off Dead, The Last American Virgin and later Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure had, I’m sure, shaped my idea of the perfect girlfriend and whose roles in Summer Girl and Amityville 2 stirred something in my teenage libido too!
For those unfamiliar with the term, Pareidolia is the scientific term for seeing meaningful images in random visual patterns. It’s what the Rorschach inkblot test is based on,...

It’s not even October, but Massachusetts is already being spoiled with horror events. A mere week after Silver Scream Con took place in Danvers, Terror Con slashed into the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough on September 15-17.
Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, had the longest lines throughout the weekend. He was joined by several other A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise alumni: Part 1’s Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronee Blakeley; Part 2’s Mark Patton and Kim Myers; Part 4’s Lisa Wilcox and Nicholas Mele; Part 5’s Erika Anderson, Whit Hertford, and Beatrice Boepple; and Freddy vs. Jason‘s Monica Keena.
Other big draws included Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2), pro wrestling legend Mick Foley, The Walking Dead‘s Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Chandler Riggs, Emily Kinney, and Katelyn Nacon, Danielle Harris (Halloween), Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), and a Fright Night reunion with Chris Sarandon,...

The 19th annual Flashback Weekend may be months away, but the announcements surrounding Chicago’s longest running horror convention have been coming in hot and heavy over the last few weeks, and genre fans in the Midwest definitely do not want to miss out on all the Flashback festivities that will be headed to the Hyatt Regency O’Hare Chicago (Fbw’s new home!) from Friday, July 31st through Sunday, August 2nd, 2020.
While Flashback has already announced a slew of impressive guests for this year’s convention, including Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Alex Winter, William Sadler, Nick Castle, Kane Hodder, Jenette Goldstein, Mark Rolston, Quinn Lord, Sandy Johnson and Peter Cowper, but for 2020, they’re also bringing together some of the most iconic vehicles in the horror genre, including the long-lost station wagon from John Carpenter’s original Halloween, which fans will have the opportunity to not only sit in,...

In 1978, a low-budget horror film began production in the streets of West Hollywood and Pasadena, California. That film would be etched in history as John Carpenter’s Halloween – need we say more? The opening sequence… notable for being shot with a Steadicam… follows the point-of-view of an unseen character on Halloween 1963. With the […]

Speaking earlier today with the folks behind the upcoming H40: Forty Years of Terror Convention, it was brought to my attention that the hunt is on for the original Judith Myers, actress Sandy Johnson. One check of her IMDb page reveals that she’s largely been missing from the movie scene since 1979. Her bio on […]

It seems like the past few Mondays I have published posts that question things that are either being released or things that might be happening in the horror/cult genre. I look onto my fellow horror fans as family and we are one of the only groups spawned by a particular subset of films that seem to have a community. You might remember a couple weeks back when I published about Charlie Band publishing a sub-par product in his Tourist Trap Blu-Ray. Some of which have said that it is “old news”. While I would agree with that, you’d be surprised on how many people didn’t know about the Wizard Video information and/or the Tourist Trap “editing”. I came back again with a post that came about after I read a fantastic story about the studio behind Coraline and Paranorman. Hoping not to make a habit of it,...

Ah, Michael Myers. One of cinema's most notorious serial killers; pure evil on two legs. And whereas 'Psycho' is often considered the granddaddy of the "slasher" film, that'd make John Carpenter's original 1978 classic the "daddy" of this particular horror sub-genre. As is often noted, the original 'Halloween' has very little in terms of on screen violence and gore, yet it boasts some of horror's most memorable "kills." The sequels naturally upped the ante. It's no surprise that by the time they got to 'Halloween 6,' the original & now infamous producer's cut had portions re-shot with gore inserted to match what was going in the 'Friday The 13th' series at the time. Some of these outrageous kills feel tonally right for a 'Halloween' movie, others don't. But for better or for worse, Michael's always held his own against the competition! And since it's Halloween, we thought we'd...

Once again, it's time for more various oddball trailers from the far reaches of cinema obscurity. So, without any further ado, let's check out some "coming attractions"! This week with an all "Girls" theme!
Gas Pump Girls (1979)
The late 70's was the last great hoo-rah for sleazy sexploitation films made specifically for the drive-in theater before cable TV and home video took over as the preferred (and more convenient) method for those looking for mindless T&A to take in a flick.
One such late 70's drive-in sex comedy was Gas Pump Girls directed by Joel Bender.
The film centers around June (Kristen Baker from Friday the 13th Part 2 and Midnight Madness), a ridiculously sexy young girl who takes over a gas station formerly run by her uncle. As you'd expect, business isn't exactly booming, but when June and her equally sexy friends (notably Sandy Johnson from Halloween and H.

After more than 30 years, a couple of different editions and a number of VHS/DVD releases, Halloween fans may think they’ve seen it all when it comes to John Carpenter’s 1978 horror classic. But in 2006, word came down that a trove of unused negatives from the movie, including outtakes and deleted scenes, had been discovered. Now, Don May Jr. of DVD company Synapse Films, which obtained the 45,000 feet of material, has given Fango an exclusive update and images (see them below) from this footage.
“I know the fans have been waiting for more news from either myself or the purchaser, Billy J. Kirkus, but we really had nothing to report for a while,” May says. “Our original attempts to work with Malek Akkad [son of the late Moustapha Akkad, who now oversees the Halloween franchise] and Anchor Bay Entertainment went nowhere. It’s a shame, really, because we seem to have every single unused take from the film in our possession.
