Apple TV+ has debuted a set of first-look images from filmmaker Doug Liman’s ‘The Instigators’.
Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police but also backwards bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture—or worse.
Directed by Doug Liman and written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, the movie also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Toby Jones, with Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman.

With "Avengers: Endgame" behind us and Chris Evans having retired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe until further notice, we can all agree that "Captain America: The First Avenger" is the best Steve Rogers solo film, right? From its character work to its action sequences and a rousing score by the legendary Alan Silvestri, director Joe Johnston's WWII adventure is a top-tier MCU movie. While it may lack the visceral melees that the Russo Brothers brought to its sequels, "The First Avenger" delivers more than enough whiz-bang thrills and Brooklyn attitude to make up the difference (that and its politics are much less confused than those of "The Winter Soldier").
Johnston's superhero picture also boasts what is still one of the McU's most distinguished casts, pairing Evans with Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, and Dominic Cooper. Even Natalie Dormer, David Bradley,...

When Mr Bates vs the Post Office, an engaging and enraging David-vs-Goliath docudrama, first aired in the U.K. earlier this year, viewer response was so fierce that Parliament took action to speed the wheels of justice. (Isn’t it nice to know that sometimes TV can have a truly positive impact on society?) You’ll soon understand why when you fall under the spell of Masterpiece‘s four-part presentation, which depicts the plight of working-class sub-postmasters who are inexplicably accused of theft, branded as criminals in towns and villages where they were previously heralded as local pillars of the community. Their nemesis: a monolithic post office that refuses to concede that a software glitch in the fancy new computer system is the actual culprit. Frank Capra (of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington fame) would have loved this everyman-against-the system fable that happens to be true. Grounding the story in...

Exclusive: The BBC was victorious in a bidding war with Netflix for Dear England amid fears for the future of British storytelling on television.
Deadline hears that Left Bank Pictures and Dear England writer James Graham wanted the stage play to be adapted on the BBC, despite a more lucrative offer from Netflix.
The four-part series was announced by the BBC last month and will be based on Graham’s National Theatre play, which provides a fictionalized account of England’s soccer team.
Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale) featured as waistcoat-wearing England manager Gareth Southgate in the stage show and will reprise his role for the BBC series.
Sony Pictures Television-backed Left Bank and Graham chose the BBC over Netflix because they view Dear England as a national story that should be told by the UK’s national broadcaster.

Andy Harries, the influential producer behind The Crown, has said the UK is at risk of becoming a Hollywood “service industry” unless local storytelling is protected.
The Left Bank Pictures founder issued a rallying cry for British creativity during an emotional address at Thursday’s Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, where he was honored with a lifetime achievement prize.
Addressing a room packed with UK television Illuminati, Harries asked: “Are we in danger of our business ending up as a first-class, top-end service industry to the U.S. at the expense of our own shows? Shows that reflect our own lives in the UK.”
More than 78% of the £4.2B ($5.3B) spent on UK film and TV production in 2023 was from inward investment, according to British Film Institute figures. Britain’s reliance on American projects was badly exposed during the 2023 strikes when high-end production virtually shut down.

A feast for the eyeballs! That’s what the UK’s new TV drama (British shows returning for another series this year are here) output looks like for 2024 – a year of thrills, chills and laughs, from supernatural escapism to immersive historical dramas, true stories brought to life, and plenty to feed Britain’s crime mystery obsession.
Here’s a flavour of what 2024 holds for your TV: book adaptations include a new imagining of Ian Rankin’s Rebus detective stories coming to the BBC, a scandalous adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s iconic novel Rivals (starring David Tennant), Jack Thorne’s take on Lord of the Flies, and much much more.
There’s high-stakes action in thrillers like Red Eye, Black Doves and Nightsleeper, and you can transport yourself back in time to discover the lives of a notorious eighties jewel thief in Joan, sinister Jacobean power play in Mary and George,...

The bosses of Doctor Who co-producer Bad Wolf and Crown maker Left Bank both told Deadline they have started nurturing a development pot for shows that cost less to make than their previous fare. The creators of Mr Bates Vs the Post Office and Dr Death, which are among the most meaningful TV dramas of recent years, have outlined the secrets behind their series.
During a panel session at the Berlinale Series Market chaired by Deadline, Mr Bates Vs the Post Office executive producer Patrick Spence outlined the weight his production team felt during the making of the ITV drama, which laid bare the story of the biggest legal injustice in British history.
He revealed the show’s 12 lead actors, who include Toby Jones as the real life campaigner Alan Bates, worked for “in some cases, a fifth of what they could normally get” because the story had affected them so deeply. “They did it because they were angry. They had to buy in,” he added.

Harrison Ford should not be an easy man to scare.
The star best known for his derring do as Han Solo, Indiana Jones, Jack Ryan, President James Marshall, and Sgt. Joe Gavilan has perhaps, throughout the course of his life, believed himself to be as invincible as those larger-than-life heroes he's portrayed. Aside from the myriad times he's injured himself performing his own stunts, the man has crashed a plane into a ditch and another one onto the green of a golf course. He's also had a plane blown off a runway, taxied across a runway in front of a landing plane, and put his aircraft down on a taxiway.
He also once saved a boy scout from certain death in the Wyoming wilderness, but that was while piloting his helicopter. He has yet to crash one of those.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” star Lucy Boynton smoulders as 1950s nightclub owner Ruth Ellis in a new image from upcoming ITV drama “A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story.”
Ellis was the last woman to be hanged in Britain in 1955 after she was convicted of shooting dead her lover, racing driver David Blakely.
Boynton is joined by Toby Jones (“Tetris”), Laurie Davidson (“Cats”) and Mark Stanley (“Trigger Point”) in the four-part series, which promises to expose the British obsession with class, sex and death.
“Set in 1955 in the glamorous and intoxicating world of London club-land, Ruth found huge acclaim, aged 28, as the capital’s youngest club manager,” reads the logline. “But her success soon unraveled as she became entwined in an abusive relationship with racing driver David Blakely. On trial for his murder, Ruth was condemned to hang by a system which judged her for far more than her crime.”

In 2006, a movie came out starring Daniel Craig, Sandra Bullock, Sigourney Weaver, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, Peter Bogdanovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Toby Jones. That’s a murderer’s row of talent bringing to life writer/director Douglas McGrath’s script — and very few people paid it much mind. But “Infamous” was a victim of bad timing, not bad filmmaking.
One can’t blame audiences for greeting it with a collective shrug. McGrath’s movie tackled the exact same topic as the previous year’s “Capote” (the movie that earned Philip Seymour Hoffman his first and only Oscar): Truman Capote’s time spent researching and writing his true-crime classic “In Cold Blood.” After the buzzy release of “Capote” and months spent in awards season campaigning mode, no one was ready to revisit the subject.

Plot: Acclaimed writer Truman Capote surrounded himself with a coterie of society’s most elite women – rich, glamorous socialites who defined a bygone era of high society New York – whom he nicknamed “the swans.” Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. When an excerpt from the book, Answered Prayers, Capote’s planned magnum opus, was published in Esquire, it effectively destroyed his relationship with his swans, banished him from the high society he so loved and sent him into a spiral of self-destruction from which he would ultimately never recover.

Truman Capote is America’s Princess Diana. There, someone had to say it. In both instances, we remain obsessed not with the good work done but with the scandal-plagued, tragedy-tinted endings to two beloved figures. More than 40 years after Captote’s death by slow suicide (though officially it was liver failure), pop culture can’t get enough of his final years. Almost 20 years after the back-to-back film looks at his life, Jon Robin Baitz (“Brothers and Sisters”) brings Capote to TV with the second season of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series “Feud,” “Capote vs. The Swans.”
While the two movies about Capote’s life focused on the research and writing of his masterpiece “In Cold Blood,” “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” zeroes in on the work he published in the aftermath of that global success. Notably, a chapter from his work-in-progress “Answered Prayers” in which the novel’s narrator, P.B. Jones,...

ITV’s post office drama that has led to an intense period of reckoning for multiple institutions and pushed the issue to the front pages of UK newspapers for weeks has found a U.S. home.
PBS Masterpiece has picked up Mr Bates vs The Post Office, which will air in April.
Starring BAFTA-winners Toby Jones and Monica Dolan, the four-part show launched at the start of 2024 and dramatizes what is now deemed one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in UK legal history.
When money started to seemingly disappear from its local branches, the government-owned Post Office wrongly blamed their own managers for its apparent loss. For more than a decade, hundreds were accused of theft and fraud, and many were even sent to prison – leaving lives, marriages, and reputations in ruins. But the issue was actually caused by errors in the Post Office’s own computer system – something it denied for years.

Demons, witches, and devils have been around in religion and life for nearly as long as people have been around. This extends into movies as since the very beginning of motion pictures, we have attempted to capture the fears of these types of fears on film in a number of ways. Most of the media we see on it is built out from existing ideas to create a new narrative that looks to capture the interests of the general public enough to make a profit or base a movie on it. While many people know both the book and movie of The Exorcist, something like The Rite (watch it Here) that more or less came and went in the early 2010s proves that it also has an interesting story to tell. Whether or not you believe in the religious supernatural events found in either the book or the movie, it...

The current landscape is making it “increasingly hard” to fund British stories such as the Post Office drama that is currently dominating the news agenda, according to ITV’s drama boss.

Gwyneth Hughes, who penned the Toby Jones-starring four-parter, said the team has been “blown away” and “completely surprised” by the cut-through and media attention generated by Mr Bates vs The Post Office, as she detailed the legal quagmire and years of gaining people’s trust they went through to get the show from inception to screen. She was speaking in the hours before a motion attempting to speedily put the scandal right was debated by dozens of lawmakers in parliament.
About a week ago, most of the British public probably hadn’t heard of what is broadly considered the greatest miscarriage of justice in the nation’s history, but now...

Following part one of our 2024 preview, we’re counting down our 50 most-anticipated films of the year.
50. The Actor (Duke Johnson)
Duke Johnson, one half of the directing duo behind Anomalisa, makes his solo directorial (and live-action) debut with The Actor. For being based on the posthumously published novel from Donald E. Westlake, a synopsis points towards an amnesia thriller with André Holland as a New York City actor beaten and stranded in 1950s Ohio. Gemma Chan and Toby Jones co-star. As a state native I’m intrigued how they shot Budapest for small-town Ohio––the two don’t exactly scream perfect matches, but I won’t doubt the movie magic before I see it. Anomalisa was a wholly original stop-motion feature; we’re intrigued how Johnson continues that creativity in the live-action realm. – Caleb H.
49. Presence (Steven Soderbergh)

The Communication Workers Union (Cwu) of the UK has issued a statement, following the huge public reaction to the ITV drama Mr Bates vs the Post Office, which aired last week.
The four-part drama depicted the injustice suffered by hundreds of innocent British postmasters, who were convicted of theft, fraud and false accounting by their Post Office employers when faulty software caused accounting mistakes to appear in local post offices around the country. With many imprisoned for offences they did not commit, the debacle has been called the greatest miscarriage of justice in British legal history.
Alan Bates of the title was the postmaster who campaigned for years to have the convictions overturned. He is played in the drama by actor Toby Jones.
In the days since the drama aired, thousands of British viewers have demanded that the Post Office’s former CEO Paula Vennells – the boss who oversaw the...

Based on a real-life event, the BBC series, Mr. Bates vs. The Post Office, brings to light one of the greatest miscarriages of justice that took place in the British legal history. This four-part miniseries revolves around a subpostmaster named Alan Bates, who was accused of stealing money from his post office accounts, but Alan knew that it was the Horizon computer system that was to blame for these huge monetary discrepancies. Alan later found out that, just like him, many other subpostmasters had suffered the same fate, which ultimately prompted Alan to gather all those subpostmasters who were wrongly accused and demand a public inquiry to find out the truth. Alan Bates, played by Toby Jones, is inspired by a real-life person of the same name who fought against the injustice perpetrated against the subpostmasters. Let’s discuss Alan Bates’ character to learn more about him.

BBC drama The Tourist returned for its second season last night in the lucrative New Year’s Day 9 p.m. GMT (1 p.m. Pt) slot to just 2.2M viewers, beaten comfortably by ITV’s post office drama.
The episode, which peaked with 2.5M, attracted less than half of the audience of the first season’s opener from exactly the same slot two years ago, according to Barb ratings data supplied by overnights.tv. It will likely consolidate much higher as viewers watch on iPlayer over the coming weeks, where all eps are available.
The Jamie Dornan-starrer, which has moved from Australia to Ireland this season and follows a victim of a car crash who wakes up in hospital with amnesia, will launch on Netflix in the U.S. in several weeks and is also co-produced for Australia’s Stan and Germany’s Zdf. 2023 may not have been an excellent year for movies, but in spite of everything stacked against it (read: greedy conglomerates run amok), it turned out to be an excellent year of movies. While the fallout of the recent work stoppages will be felt for time to come, some of 2023’s losses will prove to be 2024’s gains, as much-anticipated but strike-delayed films like “Dune: Part Two,” “Drive-Away Dolls,” and Luca Guadagnino’s horny tennis drama “Challengers” have all secured fresh release dates in the first half of the new year.
Those titles will be joined by some of the most promising Hollywood blockbusters in recent memory, must-see work from some of the world’s greatest auteurs, and huge swings from essential artists ranging from new voices like Jane Schoenbrun (“I Saw the TV Glow”) and Duke Johnson (“The Actor”) to venerated masters like Francis Ford Coppola (“Megalopolis”) and Mike Leigh...

‘The Mist’ 4K Ultra HD Review – There’s a Reason We’re Still Talking About This Movie 16 Years Later
Stephen King adaptations have always been hit and miss. Before Mike Flanagan came along, there was one filmmaker who could always be trusted with King’s material: Frank Darabont, whose first foray into filmmaking was a short adaptation of “The Woman in the Room.” After making a name for himself as a screenwriter with the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob, Darabont made his feature directorial debut with 1994’s The Shawshank Redemption and followed it up with The Green Mile in 1999.
His thus-far final King adaptation came in 2007 with The Mist, which finds a group of locals trapped in a grocery store while an ominous fog shrouding mysterious secrets envelopes their quaint Maine town. A microcosm of any community, the supermarket is a canny setting for a contained thriller. The divisive mob mentality and pigheaded self-righteousness that manifests under pressure is even more poignant in a post-Trump world.

There’s a rhythm missing to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and a beat that it doesn’t quite hit. The gifts don’t stop in December at Disney+! In addition to holiday festivities all month long like the Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade and the CMA Country Christmas Special, the House of Mouse streamer will soon become the home for Whovians and Demigods.
Disney+ will deck the halls with a glut of Gallifreyan adventures and the premiere of the long-awaited “Doctor Who” anniversary specials. The first of the three debuted on BBC One and on the Disney streamer on Nov. 25, but the other two David Tennant and Catherine Tate-led serials will arrive on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. Later in the month, ring in Christmas with the franchise’s holiday special with Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson getting their full-episode debuts.
And the wait is over for “Percy Jackson” fans, who will see the beloved Rick Riordan book series get a (hopefully) respectful adaptation with the premiere of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

John Curran’s 2023 thriller film introduced us to Tom Roth (Luke Brace), an everyday man having a very bad day. The movie kicked off with him reversing his car. Tom wiped the blood on his face with a piece of cloth, looking all confused and frightened. It seemed like he had committed a crime and was now trying to hide from it. The blood on his knuckles suggested that he’d been in some kind of fight. He called his daughter, Ruby, to ask her not to go home before calling him, but the call went straight to the voicemail. But what were the events that led to his predicament?
Spoilers Ahead
Where Is Ruby?
Tom hadn’t heard from his daughter for a while, and when he did, it was not all rainbows. Ruby (Martha Kate Morgan) called Tom a day ago, crying and begging him to help her.

Filmmaker Martin Scorsese returns to theaters just in time to take on Taylor Swift in the second weekend of her record-setting “The Eras Tour” concert movie. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” is Scorsese’s first movie since “The Irishman” in 2019, which ultimately ended up on Netflix. Adapted from David Grann‘s 2017 true-crime novel, it’s about a group of unscrupulous white men in the 1920s trying to rob the Osage Nation of Oklahoma out of their oil money.
“Killers” reunites Scorsese with two of the actors with whom he’s collaborated the most, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, though this is only the second time they star in one of his movies together.
