American animation is in an odd place. For creators, directors, and animators, the overriding cultural stigma against animation — that it's just for kids — probably provides a great deal of frustration. That's a joke even the Oscars make. It's a perception that limits the medium and reduces any potentially heady thematic material to something bland and easily digestible. Any material directed towards adults shifts into a mélange of innuendo and pop culture references, and children are condescended to in much the same way.
But even the movies that seem tailor-made for children's sensibilities get lost in the shuffle sometimes. 2012's "Rise of the Guardians," for instance, had a slam-dunk premise and an epic scale. It was a movie that took the fears of children seriously while also providing wildly entertaining set pieces, with beautiful animation and a star-studded cast. And yet, according to The Numbers, it didn't even make its production budget back domestically.

"Meet the Robinsons" was a fun kids' film about a boy who ends up traveling through time and meeting a strange family from the future. Released after Disney's renaissance era and before its revival era, this movie has largely been forgotten in the 15 years since. That's a shame because it's actually pretty good and the story itself holds up, even if the animation doesn't.
Considering how interested the movie itself is in the idea of changing the past, it's tempting to look back at the movie and wonder what could've happened if things had gone a little differently. As covered in /Film's oral history of the movie, "Meet the Robinsons" was in production hell for a long time, always "on the verge of entering production" but never quite doing so. Although the first draft was written in 1989, the movie didn't come out in until 2007. During this period, a couple of...

As a vocal and dedicated champion of all things animation, I have no shame in admitting to having some borderline "hipster opinions" about Disney movies. For starters, I firmly believe that Stephen J. Anderson's "Meet the Robinsons," the second all-cgi film for the company, is one of the best films to come out of Walt Disney Animation Studios -- ever. The film celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, but it remains an under-appreciated feature in the canon of Disney classics.
Loosely based on William Joyce's book "A Day with Wilbur Robinson," Disney's "Meet the Robinsons" centers on an orphaned boy genius named Lewis, who invents a machine with the ability to extract and project memories. Unfortunately, a mysterious villain known as Bowler Hat Guy steals it. Lewis feels hopeless, that is until a time traveler named Wilbur Robinson arrives to bring him to the future. Lewis is thrust...

Disney's post-Renaissance era was marked by frustration and internal strife: The films were less financially successful, the studio was suffering a creative identity crisis, morale had hit a new low, and questionable management was a constant issue. While DreamWorks and Pixar were on the rise, Walt Disney Animation was floundering. But even as the slump persisted, optimism bubbled under the surface in the form of Stephen Anderson's "Meet The Robinsons."
At the heart of "Meet The Robinsons," there's a very delicate balance between the past and the future. It's a fitting tension for a film that arrived just after the studio's golden era, but before its grand revival. As though blithely self-aware of its positioning, the movie begins with a logo that calls back to Steamboat Willie and ends with a powerful mantra from the man who started it all, Walt Disney. But the mantra in question warns the...

“Stranger Things” has once again taken back the crown for the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, overtaking “Virgin River” during the week of Aug. 1 through 7. In the No. 3 spot on the Overall List of all programming is Pixar’s “Lightyear,” which made its streaming debut on Disney+ Aug. 3.
Despite a viewing drop of more than a fifth, “Stranger Things” logged 1.42 billion viewing minutes, compared to “Virgin River’s” 1.38 — a 42 reduction in viewing. In last week’s report, “Virgin River” clinched the top spot with 2.4 billion minutes over “Stranger Things,” which had 1.84. The reversal of standing marks the eighth weekly win for the Duffer Bros. hit sci-fi series this year.

“Lost Ollie” has been found – and he’s on Netflix right now.
The four-episode series, loosely based on a William Joyce book (“Ollie’s Odyssey”), had been in development for more than a decade. What began as a project from Joyce’s own production entity was eventually rescued by Netflix and 21 Laps, one of the production companies behind “Stranger Things.” That’s when Shannon Tindle, an insanely talented designer and animator who had created Laika’s “Kubo and the Two Strings,” pitched his version of the story, which follows a lost toy (voiced by Jonathan Groff), who teams up with a pair of mismatched toys (played by Tim Blake Nelson and Mary J. Blige) and heads out in search of his owner, set deep in the American South.
And to chart Ollie’s odyssey, Tindle found the perfect partners – chiefly director Peter Ramsey, who is one of the most influential...

"Lost Ollie" is Netflix's latest limited series, an animation/live-action hybrid with a narrative that will be familiar to everyone who has seen "Toy Story" or "The Velveteen Rabbit." It follows a patchwork bunny who has lost his human and best friend, Billy, and subsequently embarks on an epic adventure to be reunited with him.
The series packs more emotional gut punches than any warning can prepare you for, but it is still a delightful and fun adventure in the vein of a Mark Twain novel. It also has an incredible cast that includes Jonathan Groff, Tim Blake Nelson, Mary J. Blige, Gina Rodriguez, and Jake Johnson. Sure, the mid-point can be a bit repetitive and slow, but the pay-off of the show can easily cue the waterworks. In her review for /Film, Shania Russell wrote: "'Lost Ollie' doesn't need to be a grand epic or end-of-the-world type quest.

In the vein of “Toy Story” and “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” Netflix’s miniseries “Lost Ollie” treats its young, target audience as people who can grasp weighty subjects like grief without being condescended to. At the same time, the live-action/animated hybrid series, from Shannon Tindle and directed by Peter Ramsey, offers family-friendly programming that allows adults to access a lost sense of childhood — something star Gina Rodriguez feels is a “huge gift” to both her younger and current self.
“There was an unbelievable clarity to the vision [Ramsey and Tindle] had and it was undeniable and the scripts were just so beautiful, and just so nuanced, where it has joy and levity, and it has this quest and this action-adventure fulfillment, and then it also has really difficult subject matters that aren’t always presented to the young,” Rodriguez told TheWrap.

July saw many adapted stories head to screens both large and small, sourced from novels, comic books and more, and August is no different with a bevy of book adaptations on the horizon.
Last month gave us adaptations of Delia Owens’ wildly popular novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” , Mark Greaney’s spy thriller “The Gray Man” and in series form “Paper Girls” on Prime Video starring Ali Wong and Jason Mantzoukas.
August also has a slate of book adaptations landing in theaters and on streamers. Two of them came from graphic novels, and one might sound familiar to fans of George R. R. Martin and “Game of Thrones.” For kids, there is the final season of “Locke & Key” as well as “Lost Ollie” which comes from “Ollie’s Odyssey.”

Is there a more universal experience than the festering fear of looking around and realizing you're lost? It happens to children and adults, and evidently, it's also a very common occurrence for toys. "Lost Ollie" certainly isn't the first time we've seen a beloved toy embark on a dangerous journey to find its way home, but it might very well be the most adorable. To be fair, this particular story has the advantage of following Ollie, the world's cutest stuffy — a patchwork bunny with unbeatable spirit and the voice of Jonathan Groff.
When he wakes to find himself in an unfamiliar place, it's up to Ollie to swallow his fear and begin a quest filled with danger, mystery, and more emotional gut punches than one can honestly prepare for. And why put himself through all that? Because somewhere out there is Billy (Kesler Talbot), a young boy who needs his favorite toy.

Are you ready to find “Lost Ollie?”
The upcoming Netflix series, which debuts August 24, is based on a story by William Joyce, whose stories have been adapted into “Robots,” “Meet the Robinsons” and “Rise of the Guardians.” It follows a lovable, hopelessly lost toy rabbit named Ollie (voiced by Jonathan Groff) as he searches for his young owner (Kesler Talbot).
His search sees him traversing many dangers in a surprisingly naturalistic deep south, as he teams up with a clown doll named Zozo (Tim Blake Nelson) and a battle-hardened bear (Mary J. Blige). And you can watch the trailer (above).

Alan Cumming is offering a 10,000 reward for anyone who has information about Tonka, the missing chimpanzee who starred with him and Rene Russo in the 1997 family comedy “Buddy.” Tonka was last seen in a cage at the now-defunct chimpanzee breeding facility Missouri Primate Foundation in Festus, Mo. Chimpanzees were bred at the location and then rented out for movies and parties or sold to private owners. PETA has put up its own 10,000 reward for information about Tonka’s whereabouts, bringing the total reward to 20,000.

Editor’s note: Before he founded and became CEO of the Universal-based animation factory Illumination, Chris Meledandri was tasked with building an animation division at Fox. Early on, the president of Twentieth Century Fox Animation in 1998 acquired Blue Sky Studios for the studio. The Westchester, NY-based animation company might have started as an adjunct to Fox’s Hollywood animation operation, but that changed when Meledandri gave Blue Sky the room to grow, and the result was the multibillion-dollar Ice Age franchise. Meledandri, who would start Illumination and hatch another multibillion-dollar franchise in Despicable Me. Here, he laments the decision by Disney to shutter Blue Sky and celebrates its origins.
Hearing the sad news of the closing of Blue Sky Studios brings back the memories of our journey together. It was 1996 and I was running the animation division at Fox.

France’s thriving animation industry has been getting the biggest boost from the international tax rebate since 2013.
Each year on average, animated films and series represent a third of the productions accessing the international tax rebate and 50% of the expenditure of foreign productions in France, according to Xavier Lardoux, head of films at the Cnc National Film Board.
Since the international tax rebate was revamped in 2016, allowing for a rate increase which grew from 20% to 30%, several French studios such as Mikros Animation, Dwarf Labs or Fortiche Production have followed the footsteps of Illuminated MacGuff and have started working on American projects that have brought nearly 30 million euros ($35 million) in expendirure in France, according to the Cnc.
Dwarf Labs, for instance, began working for Cirrina Studios on William Joyce’s animated feature “The Extincts” (pictured), an adaptation of British writer Veronica Cossanteli’s popular children novel.

Zombies menace islanders in dull, inept black-and-white mini-budgeter. Properly duelled, it will get by in lower class ballyhoo markets and drive-ins. Rating: Gp.
It’s hard to tell the zombies without a scorecard in I Eat Your Skin, a black-and-white voodoo horror cheapie out of the bottom of the formula programmer barrel. Between endless bouts of tribal dancing, some crusty-looking native monsters stalk around the Florida locations looking believably dead, but the humans in the cast are so wooden there’s not much contrast. None of the gore promised in the title ever materializes, and no skin gets eaten, either. Watching Moonbot Studios’ Kickstarter campaign for “The Golem,” I can help get the impression that they’re punching above their weight: they need to raise a lot of money in the next few weeks.
Still, you don’t win an Academy Award -- as Moonbot did for the short film, “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” -- without making some friends, and the team have enlisted Guillermo del Toro to the cause. “Moonbot has some of the finest storytellers in the world,” the “Pan’s Labyrinth” director enthuses in a recent video update to the project. “I believe in them. I believe in [lead writer] Bill Joyce. I believe in the capacity they have to turn ‘The Golem’ into an incredible world.”
“I believe Bill and his team are the ones to make it happen,” del Toro continues, noting that they’ll be working together on a “Golem” proposed film.

Another 3D movie is coming, and this time we’re here to have a little chat about DreamWorks Animation’s 3D film titled Rise of the Guardians, based on William Joyce‘s upcoming children’s book series The Guardians of Childhood.

Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law and Isla Fisher. Not bad for a 3D epic, right?
Here’s the Rise of the Guardians synopsis:
“When an evil spirit called Pitch becomes bent upon taking over the world by inspiring fear in the hearts of kids everywhere, a group of our greatest heroes – Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and Jack Frost – band together for the first time, determined to stand in Pitch’s way.
