A 22-year-old gunman opened fire in a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, killing five people and leaving more than two dozen injured before he was subdued by “heroic” patrons and arrested by police who were on the scene within minutes, authorities said Sunday.
At a news conference Sunday morning, Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez identified the suspect as 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich, who was being treated for injuries.
Describing the nightclub, Club Q, as “a safe haven for our LGBTQ citizens,” Vasquez said the suspect began shooting at patrons immediately after he entered the venue. As he moved further inside, at least two people confronted and fought him, stopping him from firing. The suspect used a “long rifle” and authorities found at least one other firearm when they arrived at the scene, according to the police chief.

David Fincher's borderline obsessive strive for perfection has earned him a reputation for being one of Hollywood's most meticulous directors. Michael Alan Kahn, who worked under Fincher as the assistant director during the 1995 crime-mystery "Se7en," provided insight into Fincher's mindset when he recalled to The Ringer a telling exchange the two had on set:
"I went up to Fincher and I said, 'Look at this! Look! It's here! We're here! You did it! We're shooting a movie! There's Morgan Freeman. There's Brad [Pitt]. There's Kevin Spacey ... Isn't this amazing? Isn't this wonderful? This is what you wanted.' And he looked at me as though I were from outer space and said, 'No, it's awful.' And I looked at him and I said, 'Why is it awful?' And he said, and I mean sincerely, 'Because now I have to get what's in my head out of all you cretins.

David Fincher’s first go-around as a feature film director was a failure. As the filmmaker behind “Alien 3,” Fincher battled with 20th Century Fox over creative control and had the impossible task of directing without a finished script. Fincher has since disowned the film, which means that in his eyes his real movie career begins with “Seven.” The New Line-backed serial killer drama, starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, and Gwyneth Paltrow, opened in theaters 25 years ago on September 22, 1995 on its way to $327 million worldwide (the seventh top grosser of the year) and an Oscar nomination for Best Film Editing.
With “Seven,” Fincher finally got his directorial breakthrough after making a name for himself as the music video director behind such classics as Madonna’s “Express Yourself” and “Vogue,” George Michael’s “Freedom ’90,” and Michael Jackson’s “Who Is It?” And with “Seven” Fincher had the kind of artistic freedom...

Want to know what's in contention for Best Picture? Look to Best Film Editing. No category except Best Director has as much overlap with the top category as of late. Is that how things will turn out this year? Let's take a look… That aside, the branch is also fond of suspense films, action films and war films. Musicals (if they are big players overall) and films with non-linear narratives tend to have a leg up, too. We don't tend to see film editors racking up nods like we do other disciplines, though. Michael Kahn is the all-time nominations leader with eight. And don't get me wrong – that's a lot of nominations. But compared to "all time" figures in every other crafts category, it's on the low side. So with that out of the way, what can we bank on this year? William Goldenberg won this category two years ago...

With a title like The Haunting of Whaley House, Asylum Pictures has another imitation product about a real life haunted estate in the works. This studio has built a reputation of creating some way out of the way horror titles. The last one in this particular supernatural genre was Amityville Haunting (2011). In this latest, America's most haunted house in the west coast of America, located in San Diego, gets center stage. Whaley House is reputed to be spooked by many a spirit.
This film stars Stephanie Greco (Chemical Peel, Phoenix Falling) and Graham Denman (Sick Girl, Eyes of the Woods) in the lead roles of Penny and Craig. They get a private tour of the home and get more than they bargained for. Along for the ride are fellow performers, Alex Arleo, Arielle Brachfeld and Carolina Groppa. Writers: Eugenie Ross-Leming & Brad Buckner.
The latest episode of "Supernatural" has gone back to filling a few gaps and only offering hints of what is to come for the remaining third of the series. When considering the opening montage, thoughts on Bobby’s death are not yet gone, Dean will have to look back at the events of “The Girl Next Door” and Frank is being sorely missed.
The clues are showing that Bobby is indeed around and offering advice from the Great Beyond. But the Winchesters are unsure if that’s the case. This direction is almost not surprising when considering how stubborn Singer is, and how unwilling he is to let go of anything he holds dear. From the beer bottle to some pieces of paper, the evidence is slowly stacking up.
The big reveal will most likely happen with either, "The Born-Again Identity" or “Of Grave Importance.

Zombies and mass consumerism go hand-in-hand, and these days, "The Walking Dead" is the de-facto standard. The television series is adapted from the comic book of the same name by Robert Kirkman, where Deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) awakens to an apocalyptic world. The premise is all about the survival of the species as they are shoved back into place as hunter-gatherers.
With what’s left of civilization at stake, fortunately for the hungry zombie consumer there’s plenty to look at for the holiday season. The only creature that has to worry about its survival during the holidays is the turkey. Everything else has a faster time to replenish itself (unless, where noted):

As the evil of the Necronomicon spreads across the cosmos, a new ally in the war against the Deadites emerges. There is a woman going by the name of "Ash," and readers may very well ask what her relation is with the real "Chosen One?" Is Ashley J. Williams going to have competition? What strangeness doth producer/writer Jason Witter and director Ryan Denmark bring? And how do they reinterpret a classic play for a zombie generation? In what gets created, Romeo & Juliet vs. the Living Dead defies every expectation for a zombie film that aspires to be very literary. These two filmmakers have made a very unique product that can easily rank up there with author Seth Grahame-Smith’s "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." Their passion for this bard's work is easily apparent, but their love for the classic zombie film is just as equally visible.
The team behind this movie put together an amazing product that will satisfy certain types of audiences. For those looking for spectacular makeup effects, that will not be found here.

When Chinese producer, director and writer Tsui Hark is heavily involved in a production, he often leaves a huge cinematic stamp on it and the international world pays attention. The last film he directly worked on was Seven Swords (2005), which borrowed on some ideas from Akira Kurosawa's Shichinin no Samurai (Seven Samurai). But these days, his most recent work that’s getting noticed is Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame.
Although Hark is not involved in the writing of this detective mystery thriller, his trademark for phantasmagorical storytelling and gorgeously framed visuals is certainly consistent throughout. The only shame is the larger dependence on CGI in modern Hong Kong Cinema to recreate the sprawling cityscape around Daming Palace, which is the backdrop for most of this film. Also, not all of the...

Once in a while, even a fine show like "Supernatural" goes over the top with its humourous take on pop culture. “Shut Up, Dr. Phil” is a dead giveaway to the television show, where the good doctor, a psychologist, offers advice to turn people’s troubled lives around.
That is not going to happen anytime soon for the Winchesters. The problems that they have feels too far-gone to ever get fixed. But maybe the problems of Maggie (Charisma Carpenter) and Donald Stark (James Marsters), a wealthy couple who lives the high life, might get resolved. They were happily married once, but during the episode, they are in the process of separating for good.
The "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" mini-reunion is mostly a ratings booster as the series hits episode five. And in what one generation of fans want, another may not be as interested.

In "Supernatural’s" latest, “Defending Your Life,” Dean Winchester has to deal with his guilt and face those actions he had regret over. This episode continues from the previous one, “The Girl Next Door,” where he killed Amy in cold blood. Viewers are left wondering if he will tell Sam. Instead, the Egyptian god Osiris (Faran Tahir) may be the one forcing him to tell all.
Apparently this deity has no qualms of changing the status quo either. He can leave the Underworld once in a blue moon to go bar hopping. He is nonchalant when prying into the affairs of mortals. No explanation is given for why he chose the town of Dearborn, Michigan as his entry-point. Maybe there are no more pure blood Egyptians he can preside over back home.
As interesting as this interpretation is, there are some elements from his origins that are not revealed.

The Leviathans are apparently one step behind as the Winchesters are hiding out in "Supernatural's" latest, and they could perhaps be with “The Girl Next Door.” The villain they end up getting to know ends up being a creature from Asian and Indian folklore, a shape-changing fox spirit better known as a kitsune. Although these creatures are not traditionally known to attack humans (they prefer to eat tofu instead), these creatures are more known to be representations of romance.
Shades of Romeo and Juliet are hinted at in this episode, but instead, another story is told. This episode brings forward concerns about who has the right to bring balance to the force. Neutral entities, even if they have malevolent tendencies and strange food choices, apparently cannot be allowed to live at all. Although the brothers are said...

Horror enthusiasts all over the world are invited to read “The Uninvited,” a brand-new iPad app containing original tales of terror and sequential art. This anthology ($2.99) can be found on Apple’s App store, and it features work from contributors far and wide. More multimedia and literary content are planned for future issues, but as for when it happens will depend on the response, and the other struggles along the way.
That also includes embracing the digital generation, where almost any book can be found in electronic form, and adapting the software to run on other tablet computers. An iPhone version is in the works, but as for the desktop computer, who wants that? According to magazine founder, Adam Blainey, these computers aren't designed for reading a lengthy novel or a comic book.
“It works, but it just never caught on for psychological reasons,” says Blainey. Some people are probably afraid of transition.

The graphic is comic book styled and the synopsis is larger than life, as el jefe (the boss) lures three "female assassins" in for one last mission. Charlie's Angels anyone? A specific release date has not been announced, but expect Catch .44 in theatres in 2011.

The Japanese certainly love their fetishes. The product does not have to be just the obligatory panty shot, but in the magazines, books or films that are exported to other countries, those booty shots certainly gets plenty of attention. Or one can simply watch Gothic and Lolita Psycho. This film explores more than just its namesake. It gets tongue-in-cheek in its tale of thirst and revenge.
The budget may be cheap, but that's the style director Gô Ohara likes to use. Special Effects creator Yoshihiro Nishimura is not at the top of his form this time around. Unlike Tokyo Gore Police or Frankenstein Girl vs Vampire Girl, the gore is very tame in comparison. Some of the maiming happens off screen and when it comes down to straight decapitation, there isn't that much innovation going on.

Directors/writers: Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton.
The problem with a film that does not have direction is that the film simply goes in circles. Just like the characters in Yellowbrickroad, the viewer spends their time spinning their wheels, with no signs showing how to proceed forward. The script from Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton offers certain violent horror elements, but neither filmmaker attempts to make an argument, within the film's narrative. Thus, the viewer must do the work to fill in the blanks. Without evidence of what is and what is not, your effort is best spent on other endeavours.
Seven researchers head out into the bush, to find answers to a mass disappearance. 500 plus people vanished in Friar, New Hampshire in the 1940s. Now, these seven friends will repeat this outcome. Yellowbrickroad is a polished looking indie feature; yet the pacing of this feature is drawn out and purposeless.

The film is currently in post-production, with much of the shooting taking place in Chicago, Illinois. Have a look at the first trailer for this feature, which puts one man in another man's body. How awkward is that?

In an assignment unlike any he’s ever known, he learns he’s part of a government experiment called the “Source Code,” a program that enables him to cross over into another man's identity in the last 8 minutes of his life. With a second, much larger target...

3/5
Directed by Yoshihiro Nishimura and Naoyuki Tomomatsu.
Written by Yoshihiro Nishimura.
The horror genre films coming out of Japan are usually breathtakingly imaginative. They can range from delivering genuine chills to just being laughable. But for people seeking the latter, Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl hits comedic heights dead-on. The product is entertaining in a weird kind of way, but was that what director Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) intended?
He tries to look into the sub-cultures that often exist within Japanese high schools. But for some viewers, what he tries to do is treading a very fine line of what is considered satire. What he explores in wrist-cutting and Ganguro culture is very questionable. And the humour and low-budget special effects borrows a page from the Evil Dead movies, complete with the enough cheesy performances to either make one cringe or think they're watching a Troma product.

Saw 3D Japanese Poster*This review has been written by fellow writer Ed Sum.
Director: Kevin Greutert.
Writers: Patrick Melton, and Marcus Dunstan.
If the Marquis de Sade can be thought of as a modern hero, he would give the traps encountered in the Saw franchise a nod of approval. With >Saw 3D, there could well be some reluctance because of the growing popularity of the format. That will depend if audiences want to sit through torture porn or get their wits scared out of them with this film's direct competitor - Paranormal Activity 2. For this Halloween weekend, there's also The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. It's the box office dollars that's at stake. But just like doling out the loot amongst children after Halloween, what gets shared is hardly even.
This time around, the latest bloody imaginings from the mind of director Kevin Greutert and writers Patrick Melton...

Last Seven UK Art*Here be spoilers.
Director: Imran Naqvi.
Writer: John Stanley.
The Last Seven is a London shot film from a series of production companies including: Goliath Productions, Nightshade Productions, Press on Features, and Vesuvius Film Partners. The film was released in the United Kingdom August 27th, with a DVD/Blu-Ray release August 30th. Starring are the usual Brit' suspects: Tamer Hassan, Simon Phillips, Danny Dyer and others, with the film delving into the spiritual realm through graphic character flashbacks. The Last Seven is a slow paced thriller without an initial hook, which left this viewer slightly unsatisfied. On the plus side, there is beautiful cinematography and solid acting from the core group of actors and the film does take on some interesting existential themes. Plus Danny Dyer is in one of his first serious roles.
The film involves seven strangers waking up at the same time in a deserted London.

Dead Genesis PosterDead Genesis is a zombie flavoured film, which has been flying under the radar for some time now. The film has had a premiere back in April and now the film has a new promotional poster, which shows some of the characters for the film. The film's one-sheet shows a war between the living and the dead, but how easy would fighting shamblers, or slow moving zombies really be?
In the trailer below for the film, the age-old, Romero inspired zombies are used, which could only really capture a seventy year old woman and not anyone who could move faster than 2-3 km an hour. This argument has been made before. However, using shamblers to take over the land of the living is, simply, unbelievable. Take inspiration from Danny Boyle in 28 Days Later, or even Romero's later zombies in the Land of Dead who have intelligence and attack en masse for realism.
