A new episode of The Manson Brothers Show, the video series hosted by the writers/stars of the horror comedy The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre – Chris Margetis (Stone Manson) and Mike Carey (Skull Manson) – has just been released, and in this one the Boys take a tour of the City of the Living Dead… or at least, they watch and discuss the 1980 film with that title (which you can watch Here). To find out what they had to say about City of the Living Dead, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Lucio Fulci, who also crafted the screenplay with Dardano Sacchetti, City of the Living Dead has the following synopsis: The seven gates of Hell have been torn open, and in 3 days the dead shall rise and walk the earth. As a reporter and a psychic race to close the portals of the damned, they encounter a seething nightmare of unspeakable evil.

Sometimes we hear negative stories about famous actors on set. Egos get in the way of common courtesy, political leanings can color conversations, and working conditions can bring out the worst in people. Here's an actually lovely one instead. Prosthetic makeup is a tricky thing, and I say this as someone who has worn them in productions and been a makeup artist who applied them. They are not comfortable and can be very hot, itchy, and claustrophobic. Effects makeup has come a long way since the late 1960s when "Planet of the Apes" was shooting, and even now, it's not easy to wear. Back then, it must have been awful.
Add in the fact that, when shooting some of the scenes in the classic sci-fi film, the cast was out in the desert in 100-degree heat. The people playing the apes had major prosthetics on their faces, extra hair on their arms,...

Keanu Reeves has turned John Wick into an iconic action hero over the last seven years, but it turns out the role was originally written for an actor more in the vein of Harrison Ford or Clint Eastwood. Franchise producer Basil Iwanyk confirms in the new book “They Shouldn’t Have Killed His Dog: The Complete Uncensored Ass-Kicking Oral History of John Wick, Gun Fu, and the New Age of Action,” that the title character was a 75-year-old man in the original script.
“One of my best friends is Charlie Ferraro at UTA, who sent me this script from Derek Kolstad called ‘Scorn,'” says Iwanyk in the book (via Entertainment Weekly). “The lead was a 75-year-old man, 25 years after being retired. It was the fun of watching Clint Eastwood kick ass. I thought, ‘Okay, there’s probably one or two names you could do this with: Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford....

John Wick was almost a half-century older before Keanu Reeves signed on.
The “Matrix” actor led a script rewrite with screenwriter Derek Kolstad before the 2014 action franchise was spurred, helmed by former stuntman Chad Stahleski. For the original screenplay, then titled “Scorn,” the Wick character was supposed to be 75 years old, with the revenge story taking place 25 years after his retirement.
In an excerpt from the upcoming book “They Shouldn’t Have Killed His Dog: The Complete Uncensored Oral History of John Wick, Gun Fu, and the New Age of Action” by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman (via Entertainment Weekly), out July 19, “John Wick” producer Basil Iwanyk explained that the lead was imagined as an old-school type action hero returning to form.
“It was the fun of watching Clint Eastwood kick ass,” Kolstad explained. “I thought, ‘Ok, there’s probably one or two names you could do this with: Clint Eastwood,...

The conference will form the centrepiece of the festival’s industry programme.
The FIlmfest München is traditionally the last opportunity for the German filmmaking community to meet up before the summer break, and this year’s edition has an industry programmed with a pronounced international dimension.
One of this year’s highlights is the two-day Cine CoPro Conference (June 29-30 ), hosted by the Filmfest and the Bavarian regional film fund Fff Bayern, in which around 40 German and UK producers, directors and screenwriters will come together to discuss opportunities for co-production between the two countries.

Before Joe D’Amato became Joe D’Amato, he was Aristide Massaccesi, a respected cinematographer and camera operator. As such, he was largely responsible for the look of films ranging from low-budget spaghetti westerns to gialli such as Umberto Lenzi’s A Quite Place to Kill and, most famously, Massimo Dallamano’s What Have You Done to Solange. Massaccesi first co-directed several small films before directing the war film Heroes in Hell as well as the giallo Death Smiles on a Murderer, both in 1973.
But D’Amato, who would use his famous pseudonym for the first time in 1975, would become (in)famous for his extreme horror titles and adult films beginning in the late 70’s and continuing until his death in 1999. He is perhaps most famous for his string of over-the-top gorefests like Beyond the Darkness (Aka Buio Omega), Anthropophagus, and Absurd as well as his...

Death Smiles On A Murderer starring Klaus Kinski and Ewa Aulin will be available on Blu-ray from Arrow Video on May 22nd
A haunting and dreamlike gothic horror/giallo hybrid, Death Smiles on a Murderer is a compelling early work from the legendary sleaze and horror film director Joe D Amato, here billed under his real name Aristide Massaccesi.
Set in Austria in the early 1900s, Death Smiles on a Murderer stars Ewa Aulin, as Greta, a beautiful young woman abused by her brother Franz and left to die in childbirth by her illicit lover, the aristocrat Dr. von Ravensbrück. Bereft with grief, Franz reanimates his dead sister using a formula engraved on an ancient Incan medallion. Greta then returns as an undead avenging angel, reaping revenge on the Ravensbrück family and her manically possessive brother.

Book Review: ‘House of Psychotic Women’ a compelling dive into the personal appeal of extreme cinema
Back in November of 2011, Sound on Sight contributors were invited to write about their “gateway” films – the movies that first lit them up to the power and magic of cinema. What became apparent to me over the course of that series of posts was how much our respective choices were shaped by who each of us is. It was never as simple as, “Well, then I took Film Appreciation 101 and saw Citizen Kane for the first time…” Nothing’s that simple. Where we were from, how we were raised, the lives we led…all of that and more in some way influenced the choices each of us made. No surprise, that: we view everything – sex, politics, the way the world works – through the prism of our own experience. Why not movies?
But I’ve never seen the dynamic so clearly at work – or demonstrated so emphatically – as it is in...

Let's face it, Kier-La Janisse is a force to be reckoned with.
Over the past 15 years, she has created the CineMuerte Horror Film Festival (Vancouver, BC, 1999–2005); founded the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies as well as the Blue Sunshine Psychotronic Film Center, Montreal's coolest micro-cinema (2010–2012); and programmed for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (Austin, TX, 2003–2007). That's in addition to working for the Fantasia International Film Festival (Montreal, QC), being the subject of the documentary Celluloid Horror (Ashley Fester, 2004), writing A Violent Professional: The Films of Luciano Rossi (published by Fab Press) and contributing articles for Filmmaker magazine, Fangoria and Rue Morgue, among others. And this extensive list is only the tip of the iceberg that is this woman's achievements.
I first met Kier-La in 2009 when she generously agreed to contribute to my Bloody Breasts documentary webseries by letting me interview her amid the craziness that is the Fantasia Film Festival – she...
