Who doesn't love Dr. Zoidberg? Everyone! Everyone doesn't love Dr. Zoidberg. At least that's one of the running gags of "Futurama," the undying sci-fi sitcom created by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. Dr. Zoidberg, voiced by Billy West, is a pathetic dumpster-dwelling lobster monster whose body is lousy with parasites and who sprays his peers with ink when startled. He's grievously awkward and doesn't have any friends. What's more, he's a terrible doctor, completely baffled by the anatomy of the mammals he works with; his diagnoses tend to be for fish-related ailments like fungi.
Naturally, the "Futurama" writers love writing Zoidberg scenes. It's actually astonishing how much humor the "Futurama" writing staff has been able to mine from having a big lobster on the show. There are more gags and jokes about sea life than one might think. For example, when Zoidberg vomits, he ejects liquid from both his...

When it comes to making fun of a TV-obsessed culture, Matt Groening's shows are pretty great. His first animated sitcom "The Simpsons" would frequently feature its characters sitting around watching lazy television, from the over-alarmist Kent Brockman to the absurdly-inappropriate-for-kids "Itchy & Scratchy Show." The first layer of this running joke is that TV is bad and it rots your soul; the second layer is that this criticism is coming from a TV show itself, which we're watching. We can laugh at Homer and Bart as they amuse themselves over a braindead "When Buildings Collapse" documentary, but we can't judge them because we know we're guilty of the same thing.
Groening's next sitcom "Futurama" takes place in the same basic world of "The Simpsons," but a thousand years in the future. The world here has all the same problems as our current one, but they're taken to their logical extreme after centuries of rampant consumerism.

All good sitcoms have that one random tearjerker episode tossed in, and for "Futurama" that episode is clearly "Jurassic Bark." It gives us the tale of Fry's old dog Seymour, who tries his hardest to find Fry after he's trapped inside a cryogenic chamber. Eventually, Seymour gives up and spends the rest of his life outside the pizza parlor Fry worked at, waiting in vain for Fry to return. It's a dark sequel of sorts to the previous season's "Luck of the Fryrish," which ended on a more heartwarming note with Fry's brother naming his son after him.
"['Luck of the Fryrish'] gave us the right to try for one of these emotional episodes," co-creator David Cohen explained in a panel for Nerdist. "About once a year would you say we do one? So we did 'Jurassic Bark' with Fry's dead dog, which people care much more about than humans for some reason.

On "Futurama," the cigar-chomping robot, Bender, voiced by John Dimaggio, is known for his sparkling catchphrase, "Bite my shiny metal ass." It's a variation on his five most frequently used words, which are actually (in descending order) "bite," "my," "shiny," "daffodil," "ass." The point is, Bender has attitude, and the same could be said for the brand of irreverent humor "Futurama" employs. This was, after all, the first TV show Matt Groening created after "The Simpsons." Yet even as Groening built off the success of that show, he was working with a writers' room that included multiple PhDs and master's degree holders.
One of the writers in that room was Eric Kaplan, who penned the bittersweet, fan-favorite episode "Jurassic Bark," in which series protagonist Philip J. Fry (Billy West) tries to resurrect his beloved dog from fossilization. It's just one example of a "Futurama" episode that tugs at the heartstrings...

In a commentary track on a "Futurama" DVD, voice actor Billy West reveals that his voice for Dr. Zoidberg -- the clueless, revolting, dumpster-dwelling lobster medic -- was partially inspired by 1940s Hollywood impresario George Jessel, one of the producers on the original "Nightmare Alley" and an actor in films such as "Four Jills in a Jeep" and the bawdy 1969 Anthony Newley musical "Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?" When series creator Matt Groening incredulously asks West how he knows who George Jessel is, West shoots back with his own age (West was born in 1952).
Fun trivia: Eddie Cantor once joked that his gravestone should be inscribed with the poem "Here in nature's arms I nestle, free at last from Georgie Jessel." Jessel, not to be outdone by the burn, was actually buried next to Cantor.
The writers of "Futurama" likely didn't know that Jessel inspired the voice of Dr.

The "Futurama" character Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth (voiced by Billy West) was named after Philo T. Farnsworth (1906 - 1971), the inventor of the world's first all-electronic image pickup device, better known to the masses as the television tube. The real Farnsworth has many other patents besides, mostly involving electronic imaging, radio, or nuclear fusion. He is one of the most important engineers in the history of broadcast media.
Prof. Farnsworth on "Futurama" is also an inventor with multiple patents, although his inventions tend to drift into the realm of crackpot lunacy. Prof. Farnsworth has an entire bank of doomsday devices, invented a smelloscope that can detect the odors of distant heavenly bodies, once kept a monkey whose tiny bowler hat granted him extreme intelligence, and often makes use of the fing-longer, which is a glove sporting an index finger the length of a billiard cue. That latter device is used more often than one might assume.

The episode of "Futurama" entitled "Jurassic Bark" was about the unfrozen 20th-century boob Fry (Billy West) going to a museum in the year 3002 to find ancient antiques of the pizza joint where he used to work. There was a pizza paddle, an old dining booth, and, most shockingly, the fossilized remains of his beloved pet dog Seymour. Professor Farnsworth (West) explains that, because Seymour was fossilized so quickly, there may still be a creamy center of organic dog matter somewhere inside Seymour's rock shell. With such matter, Seymour could be cloned and returned to life with his memories and personality intact, so Fry endeavors to steal Seymour's remains from the museum. Half of the episode is told in flashback, and audiences enjoy scenes of Fry bonding with his dear dog. At one point, Fry teaches the pooch how to bark Katrina and the Waves' 1985 hit "Walking on Sunshine."

Mission accomplished! One of WarnerMedia brass’ top goals for the company’s upcoming streaming service HBO Max was to have the biggest comedy series of the past couple of decades, Friends and The Big Bang Theory — both produced by sibling Warner Bros. TV — at launch to help drive subscribers to the new offering.
After shelling out $425 million for the exclusive streaming rights to Friends, taking it away from Netflix, HBO Max has secured the exclusive streaming rights to all 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory. This marks the first ever streaming pact for past seasons of the hugely popular series, which recently finished its 12-season run on CBS.
Under the five-year deal, all 279 episodes of Big Bang will be available on HBO Max when it launches in spring of 2020. In conjunction with that, WarnerMedia’s TBS, which has been Big Bang‘s off-network home from the start, has extended its...

Never let be said that Bill Prady wasted his chance to explore the awkwardness of his life as a young adult.
The co-creator of Warner Bros. TV’s “The Big Bang Theory” mined his experiences working as a computer programmer in the early 1980s to launch the powerhouse CBS sitcom that bows out Thursday after 12 seasons. For Prady, the finale represents the end of an era, in more ways than one.
“‘Big Bang’ began as the story of me in my early 20s, when I was in the computer business in New York and failing at romantic relationships,” Prady tells Variety. “It’s the story of that time in my life and I knew I’d get one shot to tell those stories. I don’t think I get to come back and re-explore that time again. For me, [the finale] winds up the chance I had to talk about what that time was like.

Up until the sixth season, The Big Bang Theory was consistently entertaining as it successfully moved the characters forward whilst providing an endless amount of laugh-out-loud moments. Now in its seventh season, the show appears to be stuck in the same rut that Modern Family is in. Like the Dunphy-Pritchett-Delgado clan, the characters on Tbbt have all come a long way since the show premiered.
