Futurama, the cult animated comedy series created by Matt Groening, is getting the deluxe art book treatment.
Abrams ComicArts, one of the leaders in the trendy format, will release The Art of Futurama, billed as the first art book to delve into the development and history of the acclaimed sci-fi comedy.
The book will be replete with the cool behind-the-scenes visuals the Art of books are known for and will come with commentary from the Groening, showrunner David X. Cohen and producer Claudia Katz.
It examines the first seven seasons of the series, which first aired on Fox in 1999. Readers will be able dive into the development and visual history of all 150 episodes, including brand–new content, never–before–seen concept art, sketches, developmental work, and a complete episode guide for the Emmy-winning show.
For the uninitiated, Futurama was a social satire that cented on a slacker named Philip J.

Time is a tricky adversary in "Futurama." It's been 24 years since the show first debuted in 1999, but in the latest season, available on Hulu, the characters clearly haven't aged 24 years. But, unlike on "The Simpsons," the characters have aged at least a little bit. Bart Simpson has been 10 years old for 35 years. Fry and Leela (Billy West and Katey Sagal) seem to have grown together as a couple and both have matured ever so slightly, implying the passage of real time. In 24 years, they have aged maybe seven. Hilariously, the Professor (West) seems to have continued aging apace, remaining the doddering old fool he always was. The alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) hasn't really grown up, but he has changed over the years, remaining criminal but growing a sense of self-pity. Amy (Lauren Tom) has graduated from college, gotten married, and has three newt-like children with her invertebrate husband Kif (Maurice Lamarche).

In the very first episode of "Futurama," Professor Hubert Farnsworth (Billy West) a doddering old relic of the scientific intelligentsia and mad scientist extraordinaire, was about 149 years old. It would later be revealed (in 2000's "A Clone of My Own") that he had lied about his age and that he was actually 159 years old. Then, thanks to a mystical time-acceleration whirlpool on a distant planet, as seen in the 2003 episode "Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles," the Professor would age forward even further. At last count, the character was hovering somewhere around 175.
The Professor is rarely seen in anything other than a lab coat and slippers. He also always wears incredibly thick glasses that obscure his eyeballs. The Professor's eyes have never been seen on "Futurama." When Mom (Tress MacNeille) removes his glasses before a moment of intimacy in the 2000 episode "Mother's Day," he is only seen from behind. She remarks that...

It took a lot of writerly sci-fi calisthenics to get there, but the events of the 2008 "Futurama" movie "Bender's Game" take place largely in a Gygaxian world of wizards, knights, centaurs, and dragons. There are no hobbits, but hobos and rabbits are doing what they can to redress their absence.
It seems that the alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) was built without an imagination, a grievous deficiency indeed when he is asked to play "Dungeons & Dragons" with his 12-year-old friends Cubert (Kath Soucie) and Dwight (Bumper Robinson). Bender eventually comes around and invents a character named Titanius Anglesmith, Fancyman of Cornwood.
Sadly, playing D&d forces Bender's newly discovered imagination into overdrive, and he soon believes that he is Titanius Anglesmith. Like Don Quixote before him, Bender now sees himself as a brave knight errant, tilting at the high-tech windmills of the 31st century. He will eventually be committed...

In the "Futurama" episode "A Big Piece of Garbage", Fry (Billy West), Bender (John Dimaggio), and the rest of the Planet Express crew traveled into space to encounter a moon-sized ball of garbage that had been expelled from Earth many centuries before. Among the heaps of trash on the garbage moon, they find a pile of discarded Bart Simpson toys. Bender eats its shorts. The existence of "Simpsons" merchandise in "Futurama" gave the series a pretty bold stance. As the show's co-creator, David X. Cohen said on a DVD commentary track, "The Simpsons" is fiction, while "Futurama" takes place in the real world.
This notion, however, was challenged by a 2014 "Simpsons"/"Futurama" crossover episode called "Simpsorama," wherein Bender went back in time to murder one of the Simpsons, as one of the family's DNA had evolved to create a species of killer rabbit monsters — monsters that would attack the planet — a millennium hence.

The constant cancelations and resurrections of "Futurama" have taught its makers to be nimble. The initial run of "Futurama" lasted four seasons from March 1999 until August 2003. At the time, it seemed like that was the end of things, but it would prove to be a mere five-year hiatus.
"Futurama" returned in 2008 in the form of four straight-to-dvd feature-length movies. The first one, "Bender's Big Score" was about a mysterious time-travel code tattooed on Fry's butt. The second, "The Beast with a Billion Backs," was about a lovelorn Lovecraftian space deity that romances everyone on Earth. "Bender's Game" saw the Planet Express crew transported into a Gygaxian fantasy universe (likely serving as the inspiration for Matt Groening's "Disenchantment"). "Into the Wild Green Yonder" concerns psychic waves pulsing through the universe, tinfoil hats, and a feminist uprising. The movies were eventually broadcast on TV, each one split up into four episodes.

When Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's "Futurama" debuted in 1999, it aired on Fox and fit neatly into the traditional network TV 30-minute time slot. Most half-hour TV shows were typically only about 22 minutes of actual programming, allowing for two extended commercial breaks roughly at the 10-minute mark and the 20-minute mark. Because they were beholden to that stringent schedule, most network TV shows worked their writing down to a science, writing stories that could only be told in a very specific way. To some readers, the structure may sound creatively limiting, but one might also recall that old saying about creation vis-à-vis necessity. For generations, TV writing expertly crafted stories that could fit into 30- or 60-minute time slots with ease, carefully writing in climactic moments or comedic punchlines right at the commercial breaks.
This structure certainly aided "Futurama," which was forced to be jaunty and light...

Showtime has announced the release date of their upcoming limited series “Fellow Travelers,” starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey. The eight-episode drama will premiere on Oct. 27.
Created by Academy Award nominee Ron Nyswaner and based on Thomas Mallon’s novel of the same name, “Fellow Travelers” is both a romance and a political thriller, depicting the secret relationship between two men who meet in McCarthy-era Washington. Bomer plays Hawkins Fuller, a man with a lucrative behind-the-scenes job in politics, and Bailey plays an idealistic, religious young man. Their romance begins at the same time that Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants.” The show tracks the protagonists over four decades, through the Vietnam War protests, the drugs and disco of the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

Futurama is finally arriving this summer on Hulu.
The long-awaited revival of the animated series is set to premiere Monday, July 24 on the streamer. New episodes will be released weekly during season 11, which consists of 10 episodes.
Hulu previously announced a 20-episode order of the animated comedy in February of 2022.
The streamer promises that the 10 all-new episodes will have something for everyone. New viewers will be able to pick up the series from here, while long-time fans will recognize payoffs to decades-long mysteries – including developments in the epic love story of Fry and Leela, the mysterious contents of Nibbler’s litter box, the secret history of evil Robot Santa, and the whereabouts of Kif and Amy’s tadpoles. Meanwhile there’s a whole new pandemic in town as the crew explores the future of vaccines, bitcoin, cancel culture, and streaming TV.

Good news, everyone! Not only did Futurama make its Earthican presence known at San Diego Comic-Con 2011, but series creator Matt Groening also announced the release of the Futurama Head-In-a-Jar Creator App for iPhone and iPod Touch!
Available for release on iTunes immediately after he announced it, and developed in a collaboration between Comedy Central, the producers of Futurama and Rough Draft Studios, the free App allows fans to design their own Head-In-a-Jar, just like in the cartoon!
The App allows users create their own customized character, choosing from male/female humans, robots or aliens, even customizing traits such as eyes, nose, hair, blemishes and the background. Other features include Futurama-themed accessories, such as a foil hat (seen in Into the Wild Green Yonder), Flexo’s beard, Nibbler’s antenna and a customized name plate for each head designed! Says Jake Wallace, Producer w/ Cc Digital Media of the character...
