Rachel Weisz is both executive producer and star of Amazon Prime Video’s limited series “Dead Ringers.”
“It’s a psychosexual thriller about codependence,” the Oscar-winner told Variety at the show’s New York City premiere. “It’s twisted and entertaining and darkly humorous.”
A modern take on David Cronenberg’s 1988 classic film, Weisz plays twin doctors who share an unapologetic desire to push the boundaries on medical ethics as they challenge antiquated birthing practices to bring women’s health care to the forefront.
Simultaneously juggling the characters of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, the sisters are gender-swapped in the remake of the movie that starred Jeremy Irons as the twin doctors.
As a producer, Weisz says she was “involved in it from beginning to end” with Emmy-nominated writer and playwright Alice Birch, who served as showrunner.

The limited series opened to rave reviews, holding fresh at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics’ consensus that reads, “If ‘Dead Ringers’ doesn’t wield as cutting a blade as David Cronenberg’s original chiller, it’s not a pale imitation either, thanks to Rachel Weisz putting on a clinic in doppelgänger duplicity.” The ensemble cast includes Michael Chernus, Poppy Liu, Britne Oldford, Jennifer Ehle, Emily Meade, and Jeremy Shamos. Let’s see what specific reviewers have had to say.

What’s better than Rachel Weisz? Two Rachel Weiszes. The Oscar-winning actor is playing twins in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming “Dead Ringers” series, and the streamer now has double the footage with the release of the full official trailer for the show.
The series is based on David Cronenberg’s 1988 psychological thriller film, which starred Jeremy Irons as Beverly and Elliot Mantle, identical twin brothers who run a successful Obgyn clinic. Weisz plays gender-flipped versions of Beverly and Elliot, but the twin’s disturbingly close relationship — down to sharing lovers and drugs — remains intact. The trailer, set to Soft Cell’s 1981 synth cover of “Tainted Love,” teases a very different storyline compared to the original film, focusing on the twin’s experiments to change the very way women can give birth — pushing against basic medical ethics in the process.
“You want me to grow you a baby out of nothing?...

The first official trailer for Prime Video’s modern take on David Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers” has arrived, with the feminist twist we’ve been craving.
As twins and gynecologists Beverly and Elliot Mantle (both played by Rachel Weisz) make it their mission to reimagine what birthing could look like for women, the twins try their hand at playing God by creating life outside of the bounds of traditional science.
“My sister and I do work that is groundbreaking but hopeful, radical but safe,” one of the twins says in the trailer for the six-episode psychological thriller series. “I want to change the way that women birth; it is world-changing … You want me to grow you a baby out of nothing, let’s make it happen.”

Although we recently got our first look at the upcoming David Cronenberg remake "Dead Ringers," we hadn't actually gotten to see any of the bizarre action to come on Prime Video. Luckily, that has now changed, because the streamer has released its first, albeit very brief look at the limited series. Don't expect to spot any major plot details with this 40-second teaser, but you will spot two very different Rachel Weiszs in bloody lab coats. You may think you know why if you saw the 1988 David Cronenberg original starring Jeremy Irons, but will that be the case with this new take? Who knows! Regardless, this teaser has us sold.
What we do know is that Prime Video's take on "Dead Ringers" looks appropriately moody and downright creepy. Come on, if you are adapting a Cronenberg work, you need to embrace the weirdness that is so synonymous with his stories.

David Cronenberg's work can never truly be replicated, but that doesn't mean it can't be modernized. One of his movies best primed for re-interpretation is "Dead Ringers," his 1988 psychological thriller starring Jeremy Irons in dual gynecologist roles. The film has frequently been considered one of the best Canadian films of all time, landing on the Toronto International Film Festival's decennial curated Top 10 list. While certainly a great movie, it can be argued that some of its themes may be better explored with a few changes.
Thankfully, "Dead Ringers" is about to get a new lease on life thanks to Prime Video. The streamer has released new details about its series adaptation of the film, directed by such big names as Karyn Kusama and Sean Durkin. While this adaptation has been in the works for a few years, it's actually coming to our screens closer than you may realize. Here's...

Carlos Valdes will star opposite Mae Whitman in the upcoming Hulu series “Up Here.”
The series received an eight-episode order at Hulu back in January. It is described as a musical romantic comedy set in New York City in the waning days of 1999. It follows the extraordinary story of one ordinary couple, as they fall in love – and discover that the single greatest obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves – and the treacherous world of memories, obsessions, fears, and fantasies that lives inside their heads.
Valdes will play Miguel. Sensitive and thoughtful, with an artistic sensibility and a romantic streak, Miguel has always struggled with the feeling that he doesn’t quite belong. But after a cataclysmic break-up, Miguel has decided to reinvent himself, burying his feelings and ditching a promising career as a video game concept artist for the lucrative world of investment banking, determined never to get hurt again.

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.

The Directors Guild unveiled nominations Monday in its limited series categories for the 72nd DGA Awards (see list below). But due to what it calls “a re-vote related to a newly implemented electronic entry submissions process,” the series noms aren’t out today.
But just last week, the guild announced that Jill Soloway — a DGA Award winner for her work on Transparent — has had the Amazon comedy’s chances of landing one final Directors Guild of America nomination forseries hampered by an internal DGA error. “We regret to inform you that the following entry was inadvertently omitted from the Comedy Series ballot: #165a. The show features the largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles ever, as well as the largest recurring cast of Lgbtq actors ever for a scripted series.
Season 2 flashes forward in time to 1990 when, on the heels of the ballroom community establishing itself in pop culture and going mainstream, the House of Evangelista is forced to reevaluate their goals. Like an earlier teaser, the new official trailer for FX’s Fosse/Verdon offers plenty of glimpses of Cabaret dancers and onstage strutters, but now we’re seeing more personal scenes of Broadway’s famous couple in good times and bad.

Exclusive: Nurse Judy is coming back. Following a memorable Season 1 guest appearance, Sandra Bernhard is joining the cast of FX’s 1980s drama series Pose as a series regular in the upcoming second season.
She will continue as the brassy but caring Nurse Judy Katz, who works with HIV/AIDS patients.
The history-making Pose, which features the largest transgender series regular cast, as well as the largest Lgbtq cast ever for a scripted series, is set in the 1980s and looks at the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York: the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world.

When it returns for Season 2, FX’s “Pose” will jump ahead one year to 1989. It will end in 1990, right around the time of Madonna’s legendary single “Vogue.”
The song is an anthem in the Lgbtq community, and will play a big role in the dance show’s sophomore finale — if creator Ryan Murphy gets the rights, that is. Murphy is “hopeful” the Material Girl will allow him to use the single. “I have a good relationship with Madonna — thus far.”
A period drama set against backdrop of the legendary ballroom scene of 1980s New York City, “Pose” follows a cast predominantly of trans women of color — a first for mainstream TV — as they navigate life on the fringes of society, carving out a space for themselves where they can celebrate each other and build a community.

You better work to keep up with the first official trailer for Ryan Murphy’s new FX series “Pose.” And the voguing. Oh, the voguing.
Though the dance musical already gave us a taste of what’s to come when it dropped a teaser along with its release date announcement last month, this clip is five times as glamorous. It looks like someone took the first video and dumped a canister of glitter on it and gave it a tiara.
“Focus, children,” Dominique Jackson, one of several trans actors cast in the drama’s eight-episode first season, says in the clip above. “It’s time to remind the world who we are.”
Oh, snap.
