Zendaya certainly likes to keep busy, between promoting her upcoming film The Greatest Showman, and riding the success of her role as Mary Jane Watson in this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. But according to her costars of the Marvel blockbuster, the 21-year-old actress is prone to laying low when not working.
Homecoming actors Laura Harrier and Jacob Batalon dished on their friend and costar to People after speaking at a high school assembly in New York on Tuesday for an anti-bullying campaign.
“ like an old lady,” Harrier, 27, tells People. “She’s like an 80-year-old woman trapped in a 21-year-old body.

Back in May, Kirsten Dunst – who played Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy – memorably made her feelings on the subsequent films to star the wall-crawler very clear. The actress remains loyal to the Tobey Maguire version of the character and believes that the two reboots of the franchise that have appeared since Spider-Man 3 landed in 2007 were purely fuelled by greed.
“We made the best ones, so who cares? I’m like, ‘You make it all you want.’ They’re just milking that cow for money. It’s so obvious. You know what I mean?’”
While chatting with Movies ‘N’ Co UK, the star of one of those reboots – Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Tom Holland – was asked what he thought about Dunst’s comments, and here’s what he had to say.
You know, she’s entitled to her own opinion and I’m not one to judge at all.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” star Tom Holland responded to criticism of the film from Kirsten Dunst. Dunst, who starred as Mary-Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s original “Spider-Man” trilogy between 2002 and 2007, had some unkind things to say about the second reboot of the franchise before it came out last month. “We made the best ones, so […]...

“With great power, comes great responsibility.” We all know the line, as it’s one of the most iconic phrases in superhero history. In fact, it was used so well in Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man movie, and echoed in the next two installments of the trilogy, that both The Amazing Spider-Man films and Spider-Man: Homecoming steered clear of it. As it turns out, however, the recent Marvel movie originally included an irreverent reference to it.
Speaking to Yahoo!, screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein revealed that they cut the line from an earlier draft, but here’s when it would have featured:
“At the end when Happy (Jon Favreau) is in the boy’s room in school we had him say, ‘Oh yeah, Tony wanted me to tell you, ‘With great power comes… something, I forgot.’ It was a little too meta.”

If you’ve seen Spider-Man: Homecoming, then you’re well aware of how impressive Peter Parker’s first solo outing within the confines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe truly was. So, it really comes as no surprise that there were more than a few talking points for moviegoers to mull over upon leaving theaters.
Personally, one thing that I couldn’t get out of my head was the “twist” involving Zendaya’s character of Michelle, whom we learned in the film’s final moments prefers to go by “Mj.” Upon witnessing the reveal, I couldn’t help but compare it to the Robin twist offered up by The Dark Knight Rises five years ago.
When speaking with Den of Geek, Marvel Studios’ own Kevin Feige was quick to offer insight into this “new” character:

When you have a character who’s been rebooted as many times as he’s been rebooted as Spider-Man, you have to change things up a bit. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is no stranger to doing so when needed, but given how many iterations we’ve already seen, you can only retread the same aspects before audiences get bored. Given that we’ve already seen both Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson in the live-action Spider-Man films, many were wondering what other love interest they may use for Peter Parker this time around.
Zendaya was announced way back when as the female lead in a role the studio was naming Michelle, and throughout the year-plus of filming and speculation, many believed that Michelle would, in fact, be a codename for her real name: Mary Jane Watson. Despite the denial from the studio,...

If you haven't seen Spider-Man: Homecoming yet, you might want to steer clear of this article as it contains some light spoilers.
As much as I loved Spider-Man: Homecoming, one of the things that bugged me was the whole Michelle being Mj thing. It seemed like Marvel went out of their way to make sure this little detail was hidden, and in the end, it seemed to get more of an eye roll from audiences than anything.
Michelle and Mary Jane Watson are two completely different characters. If Michelle is now Mj in the McU, does that mean we'll never see actual Mary Jane Watson? Is Michelle going to take the place of this character? Will Peter Parker ever have some kind of relationship with her like he did with the real Mj? Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and producer Amy Pascal talked a little bit about the new character,...

By now, you’re well aware of all the positive buzz surrounding Spider-Man: Homecoming, which will serve as Peter Parker’s first solo adventure set within the confines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And while it’s sure to be chock full of action and intrigue, it sounds like it may not be as heavy on the romance.
As it turns out, Laura Harrier, who plays Liz Allan, shot several scenes that included her kissing co-star Tom Holland, but for whatever reason, they were cut. Here’s what she had to say concerning that when speaking with ComicBook.com to promote the film:
“We did a lot of different kissing scenes and none of them are in the movie now. I don’t know. It’s an interesting choice. We didn’t know what they were going to choose, because we had all these different options of Spider-Man kisses and then there’s none.

From the sensitive Tobey Maguire to the nerdy Andrew Garfield to the clumsy Tom Holland, Peter Parker/Spider-Man has evolved into the ultimate teenage, superhero misfit. And, as Sony’s top franchise, the web-slinger has experienced different rites of passage under the direction of Sam Raimi (“Spider-Man,” “Spider-Man 2,” “Spider-Man 3”), Marc Webb (“The Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”), and Jon Watts (“Spider-Man Homecoming”).
But until Sony made a deal in 2015 to share the Spider-Man movie rights with Disney and Marvel Studios, the Marvel Comics superhero remained separate from the McU. That changed with the decidedly younger Holland making a guest appearance as Parker/Spidey in “Captain America: Civil War” (2016). Following his first solo stint in “Homecoming” (July 7th), Holland will appear in “Avengers: Infinity War” (May 4, 2018), followed by the sequel, “Homecoming 2” (2019).

With three actors having played Spider-Man on the big screen over just the past two decades, you might think there would be some rivalry between the different versions. For instance, Kirsten Dunst – who played Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy – recently dismissed the modern movies by saying she didn’t “care” about them. Amongst the lead actors themselves, though, there doesn’t seem to be any ill will. In fact, they seem to have a lot of respect for each other’s varying portrayals.
While chatting with Entertainment Tonight, current Spidey Tom Holland revealed that he’s met both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield by now and refers to them as “very nice guys.”
Holland’s kind words about Garfield, in particular, gel with what we’ve heard before. Et previously spoke to The Amazing Spider-Man actor about his replacement, where he had nothing but praise for Holland.

It’s certainly been a long road to this point. Fifteen years after Spider-Man made his big-screen debut in Sam Raimi’s original Sony-released film, the webhead is finally headlining his first solo movie set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the disappointing performance of Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Of course, Spider-Man: Homecoming follows the hero’s scene-stealing (and shield-stealing) appearance in last year’s Captain America: Civil War, in which Tom Holland (The Impossible) assumed the role once played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Yet, despite an initially strong positive reception, it remained to be seen how the friendly neighborhood Marvel icon would fare in his third cinematic interpretation, especially now that he’s tied to an interconnected web (pun intended) of films that already spans nearly a decade.

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there. In this edition we take on Kirsten Dunst, who steals the show from Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell in Cannes director-winner Sofia Coppola’s Civil War potboiler “The Beguiled” (June 23, Focus Features). It’s her fourth collaboration with Coppola.
Bottom Line: Dunst steered toward playing strong women from an early age, with films that include political comedy “Dick” with Michelle Williams, John Stockwell’s “Crazy/Beautiful” with Jay Hernandez, and Peyton Reed and Jessica Bendinger’s cheerleader sleeper “Bring It On,” shot the year she graduated from Los Angeles’ Catholic high school Notre Dame. She has never settled for The Girlfriend or romantic lead, although she made a memorable Mary Jane Watson in the “Spider-Man” franchise. “Looking back, I’m proud of the choices that I’ve made,” she said. “A...

She has never settled for The Girlfriend or romantic lead, although she made a memorable Mary Jane Watson in the “Spider-Man” franchise. “Looking back, I’m proud of the choices that I’ve made,” she said. “A long career is up to you. It’s your barometer of taste and the choices you make as an actress inform how other people look at you and if they want you in their movies. So you have to be wise.”
Career Peaks: A model from the age of three, the child actress shot out of a cannon when she won a worldwide search for 11-year-old Claudia, starring opposite Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in “Interview with the Vampire,” Neil Jordan’s fabulously kinky 1994 take on the Anne Rice classic. Dunst has long leaned into women’s subjects and directors, from Gillian Armstrong and Robin Swicord’s “Little Women” and Leslye Hedland’s raucous “Bachelorette,” to Coppola’s Cannes breakout “The Virgin Suicides,” shot when she was 16.
That film marked her segue to more adult roles. “I was sexualized,” Dunst told me, “but through her lens, which was such a wonderful way to be transitioned. There was nothing grotesque, even though I was doing things in that film that I was uncomfortable doing. I’d stress out about ‘Oh, I have to make out with that boy on the roof,’ but Sofia would just have me nuzzle into the side of their face. Even though I was blossoming, it was not something I was comfortable with yet. She really opened that door for me.”
Dunst went on to star for Coppola as a coquettish queen in the title role “Marie Antoinette,” and cameoed in “The Bling Ring.”
Assets: Beyond sexual allure, Dunst brings depth and mystery. She can play the girl next door (“Spider-Man”), a drunk bride peeing on the lawn in the moonlight in her wedding dress (“Melancholia”), an imperious 18th-century queen (“Marie Antoinette”), or a racist Nasa administrator (“Hidden Figures”). She has a steely edge, as well as a wicked sense of humor. Her career pivot came before 2010 Ryan Gosling two-hander “All Good Things,” when she started to meet with acting coach/therapist Greta Seacat (who also works with Coppola).
While Dunst always picks projects based on directors, she credits Seacat with a total game change “in terms of acting and how I approach things,” said Dunst. “And now it’s all about me. It’s cathartic for me. It’s my thing, it’s my experience, it’s nothing about pleasing anyone else but myself. And it all comes from me, so I have so much more control than anybody else; it’s all about my own inner life. By the time I get to set, I’m so prepared no one needs to direct me. No one needs to tell me anything. I feel so powerful with what I have to bring, that making movies is for myself now and it’s like getting rid of poisons. Like if you went to a therapist all the time, but I get to do it by acting out anything I want to, so that’s a powerful tool.”
She draws the line at too much nudity, and turned down a sexy role in another Lars von Trier movie. “I would work with him again,” she said. “It just depends on the part because he loves exposing… like Charlotte Gainsbourg, she has a less curvaceous body, so it’s less assaulting to see than if someone with larger breasts and more womanly-shaped did some of the things she did in movies.”
Biggest Problem: As she has come into a strong sense of her own identity, Dunst is making career choices for herself, not her fans. She’s not looking to please anyone else or playing the movie-star game, as evidenced by her maverick choices, from “Melancholia” to “Fargo.” “Only Lars and Pedro Almodovar write these incredible, messy roles for women,” she has said.
Awards Attention: She won Best Actress at Cannes for her hilariously depressed bride in Lars von Trier’s comedic end-of-the-world tragedy, “Melancholia,” after being quick enough on her feet to survive a disastrous Cannes press conference when her director went off the rails. While she earned plaudits and a Golden Globe nomination for Season Two of “Fargo” as the deeply flawed murderess Peggy Blumquist, she’s never earned an Oscar nomination. “The Beguiled” could be her first — she’s earning raves across the board.
Next page: Dunst scribes her character in “The Beguiled”: “Edwina would be me at my worst, working on a film that I don’t want to be on.”

Note: This article reveals some plot details from the movie Wonder Woman.
Adapting an iconic superhero for the big screen usually means adapting at least one of their iconic love interests as well. Steve Trevor may not be a household name like Lois Lane or Mary Jane Watson, but like those characters, he’s been a staple of Wonder Woman’s story from her very first appearance in All-Star Comics #8. Steve’s plane crash landing on Paradise Island is a key part of Wonder Woman’s origin story, in much the same way Jor-El sending Kal off in a space bassinet is a key part of Superman’s. So it only makes sense that Steve would have a major role to play in the first-ever big screen take on Wonder Woman, where he’s winningly brought to life by Chris Pine. His is the latest in a long line ...

The future is very, very bright for Zendaya.
Regardless of who she’s playing in next month’s Spider-Man: Homecoming (more on that later), the former Disney Channel actress is now on a path to stardom, and as part of her recent Vogue cover shoot (h/t Cbm), Homecoming director Jon Watts hailed Zendaya as an “amazingly technical actor.”
Not only that, but early on in the casting process for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Watts had a very specific point of reference for the vacant role of Michelle (?): Ally Sheedy from The Breakfast Club. Soon after establishing the parameters in search of an actress to play the film’s quirky, introverted outcast – or the closest approximation of Allison Reynolds he could find – Zendaya tested for Homecoming and left Jon Watts suitably impressed. Last week, a report sprung up which purportedly revealed the true identity of Zendaya’s character Michelle in Spider-Man: Homecoming, a mystery that had been eating away at fans for months. A couple of people had claimed to get hold of the junior novelization of the movie which contained the revelation that Michelle was really the daughter of Spidey’s nemesis, Adrian Toomes Aka Vulture.
Now, however, a different report is debunking the rumour. Screen Geek has found chatter on social media sites such as Reddit and Tumblr that deny the idea that Michelle’s surname is given as Toomes in the book. According to at least one fan who claims to have read it, there’s no such reveal to be found anywhere in the novelization.

Last week, we reported on a story from the folks over at Movie Pilot. According to the outlet, they had been able to snag copies of the junior novelization of the upcoming Marvel/Sony flick Spider-Man: Homecoming. One mystery that has plagued (yes, definitely a dramatic word) the production for fans: just who in the hell is actress Zendaya playing? Of course, because it’s Spider-Man, many folks speculated that she’d be playing an unconventional interpretation of the redheaded love interest, Mary Jane Watson.
The piece from Movie Pilot seemed to finally debunk this idea (after the cast and crew had repeatedly done so themselves — but who trusts them, right?), stating that Zendaya’s character, Michelle, had the last name Toomes. According to the report, Michelle Toomes would be the daughter of Vulture villain Adrian Toomes, played by Michael Keaton in the film.
This seemed to be a very fitting direction for the film.

We’re just under a month away from the release of “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” and you might feel that with the tidal wave of marketing, you know everything about the movie already. However, there are still some secrets to be revealed, and one actress who has intriguingly been largely absent the advertising so far is Disney channel star Zendaya. Her role in the film has been kept under wraps — she is not the new Mary Jane Watson as initially reported — with only the first name of her character being given: Michelle.

[Note: Marvel’s been keeping this character’s identity under pretty tight wraps, so it’s worth noting that this will probably spoil a major-ish plot reveal for Spider-Man Homecoming.]
Ever since she was cast in the latest Spider-Man reboot, Homecoming, people have been speculating about where Zendaya fits in the overall Peter Parker mythos. Was she a potential love interest, the McU equivalent to Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacey, or one of Spidey’s other romantic partners? (Michelle Gonzalez, from the comics’ late-2000s run, was a popular guess, mostly based off of her sharing a first name with the character.) All of that guesswork was complicated by her obvious disdain for Peter in the film’s trailers, but hey: It wouldn’t be Spider-Man if love came easy for our friendly neighborhood web-slinger.

Ever since it was announced that Sony and Marvel Studios would be collaborating on a new Spider-Man movie, everyone’s first question was…”who would play Mary Jane Watson?” Sure, not every Spidey film has had a Mary Jane, but she’s certainly the more recognizable love interest to mainstream audiences, and given that The Amazing Spider-Man had most recently tackled Gwen Stacy, it made sense that they may teeter back over to Mary Jane for Spider-Man: Homecoming.
However, when Zendaya was cast as the leading female role, folks were a bit stunned. Needless to say, Zendaya doesn’t match the physical profile of your standard Mary Jane Watson. In months that passed, fans were reassured time and time again that no, Zendaya would Not be playing Mary Jane, and that Mary Jane wouldn’t even have a role in the film. There are plenty of fun surprises and important reveals before the credits roll on Spider-Man: Homecoming: Michelle (Zendaya) off-handedly says that her friends call her M.J., the same nickname as Peter Parker's longtime love, Mary Jane Watson. There is a glimpse of what might be the Iron Spider suit, as well as a (standing?) invitation for Spidey to join the Avengers. Plus, Pepper Potts returns after an off-screen split with Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War -- and who knew it would feel so good to see Gwyneth Paltrow again? All that before a single credit appears, and then there are the post-credits scenes.

And with Chip Zdarsky and Adam Kubert’s new Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man book on the horizon, the timing couldn’t have been better to put the spotlight on fan-favorite Mary Jane Watson.

It’s been 10 years since Spider-Man 3 brought Sam Raimi’s vision of the smartass superhero to an end, but the character’s already been rebooted twice. There were Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man movies, which saw Andrew Garfield play Peter Parker as more of an angry nerd, and now Tom Holland’s donned the primary-colored spandex as part of the McU. The latter portrayal has generated far more positive buzz, and Spider-Man: Homecoming looks to be a return to the fun, wisecracking days of old. But as far as Kirsten Dunst is concerned, she doesn’t need to see any of the Spidey-centered movies released after 2007.
Dunst, who played Mary Jane Watson in all three of Raimi’s films, was recently asked about her webslinging-adjacent days while promoting her new film, The Beguiled, with director Sofia Coppola. “I wanted to be in that movie [Spider-Man] so ...

Kirsten Dunst played Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and while she spent the vast majority of her time on screen being a damsel in distress, the actress did appear to enjoy her tenure as part of a superhero franchise. It certainly helped raise her profile in Hollywood, too.
Now, the Fargo alum has weighed in on the scrapped fourth instalment of Raimi’s series. At the time, it was said that both the Vulture and Black Cat would be introduced, but budgetary concerns and studio interference which soured the filmmaker on the movie led to a reboot in 2012 which saw Tobey Maguire replaced with Andrew Garfield for The Amazing Spider-Man.
Regardless of what form it would have taken, Dunst was clearly keen on returning as Peter Parker’s fiancee for another instalment, as she recently said the following in an interview with Variety:

Kirsten Dunst is getting candid about her true thoughts on the Spider-Man reboots.

Much can be said for us genre fans. Probably at the top of the list for some would be the fact that we're a stubborn bunch. When we get a notion in our heads, we don't let that go, much like a two year old throwing a fit in a store because their parent won't buy them some candy.

Something which quickly became apparent when Marvel and Sony were putting together Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s massive cast was just how diverse it is. Peter Parker’s high school classmates are made up of a number of different races with characters like Ned Leeds, Flash Thompson, and possibly Mary Jane Watson (if Zendaya really is playing her) no longer portrayed as being white as they were in the comic books.

As with the revelation last week that a Venom spinoff was back on at Sony Pictures, the studio is still making the best of their Spider-Man license, as it was revealed late Wednesday that a Black Cat and Silver Sable spinoff from the web-head franchise was being turned into a priority by the studio.

Indeed, THR broke that Sony has tapped Christopher Yost to rewrite a previous existing script for the project. Furthermore, the script he is reworking is one turned in by Lisa Joy, who recently co-created a little genre show you might have heard about: Westworld.
This project has apparently been long in the works,...

Mary Jane Watson was Peter Parker’s wife for a long time, but she’s never shied away from taking on a more action orientated role in the Marvel Universe. Whether it’s donning Iron Man’s armour or confronting the likes of Green Goblin and Venom, the character has firmly established herself as quite the badass.
Now, to celebrate the launch of Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #1, Marvel has announced that they’ll be launching a series of Mary Jane-themed variant covers in June. These will be for pretty much every ongoing title you can think of and a selection of them have been revealed today.
The covers ask questions like what if Mary Jane had been awarded the Eye of Agamotto to become the new Doctor Strange? Or, what if she...

Welcome to an all-new feature, exclusive to Lrm: The Rumor Report Card.
For this recurring feature, I'll take a look at the week's biggest rumors, analyze them, break them down a bit, and then let you know whether or not you should believe them. Since there's constantly so much floating around out there and it can be hard to sift through what's real and what's shaky, I figured you could use the input of someone who's been dealing with this stuff every day for several years.
Today, we're going to tackle a numbers of rumors that are related to films like Wonder Woman, Green Lantern Corps, Deadpool II, and the Harry Potter franchise.
We'll be using the Bochinche Scale to grade these rumors. "Bochinche" is a Spanish slang term that means "gossip." The higher the grade, the more likely you should pay attention to this Bochinche; The lower the grade,...

Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man will be coming to an end this month after four seasons on air. The series was - without a doubt - a very different take on everyone's favourite wallcrawler. While most animated series featuring the character had him flying solo, Ultimate set the hero up as a S.H.I.E.L.D. trainee, leading a team of other teenage superheroes featuring Luke Cage, Nova, Iron Fist, and White Tiger. The show wasn't exactly a hit with older members of Spidey's fanbase, but still made a lot of creatively bold choices such as making Mary Jane Watson into Carnage, adapting Dan Slott's Spider-Verse storyline, changing the identities of many members of the rogues gallery, and much more. In a new featurette, the cast and crew of the series reflect on their time making the show, along with previewing the finale, which will see Spider-Man square off...

Spider-Man: Homecoming has assembled a very talented and diverse group of young actors, but outside of Tom Holland's Peter Parker, no one cast has much in common with their comic book counterparts. That's particularly the case with those we know are playing Liz Allen, Ned Leeds, and Flash Thompson, so when it was seemingly revealed that Zendaya is actually going to be revealed as Mary Jane Watson, no one was particularly surprised (though an awful lot of people were very upset). In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress has elaborated on those rumours in order to set the record straight once and for all. "I’m not Mary Jane unfortunately, but I am in the movie which is exciting." Asked again by the reporter if she's Mary Jane, Zendaya denied it and confirmed earlier reports that she's actually playing a character called Michelle. It's obviously possible that...

Rumors have pegged the actress/singer Zendaya as playing Peter Parker’s usual love interest Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the name Michelle that she’s been given on call sheets and by director Jon Watts has been deemed to be nothing but misdirection. However, for those who don’t buy the overt cover-up, Zendaya has just […]
