Apple TV+ will be tapping into France’s lavish culinary heritage with “Carême,” a new original series about the world’s first celebrity chef, Antonin Carême, which will be directed by Martin Bourboulon (“The Three Musketeers: d’Artagnan”).
Set in the 19th century, the eight-episode French drama will chart the sprawling story of Carême, who rose from humble beginnings in Paris to the height of culinary stardom in Napoleon’s Europe. He not only became an iconic chef, he also became a spy for France as his talent and ambitions attracted the attention of powerful politicians, including Napoleon. The series will shed light on the miserable reality of 19th century kitchens, contrasting with the opulence of the mansions and sophisticated of aristocrats.
“Carême” will be led by a starry French cast, including Benjamin Voisin, the Cesar-winning actor of “Lost Illusions” and “Summer of 85″ in the title role. Voisin will star opposite...

Shown at this year’s Frightfest, The Cunning Man is not the most obvious of shorts to be playing at that festival. Inspired by John Harries (1785-1839) a physician and ‘cunning man’ – a healer who uses folklore magic; the film tells the story of an elderly and mysterious farmer who drifts through the Welsh valleys collecting dead animals. What he has in store for those animals soon becomes apparent.
The Cunning Man looks fantastic. You’d be forgiven for believing that this is just an extract from a big-budgeted full feature film. There’s some really nice cinematography, with lingering shots on animals – first some dead flies and then a sheep that are near enough perfect. Using farmland and the countryside, in just a few brief shots you get a feel of the location,...

Chicago – While “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” is the most murky and forlorn Potter film yet, its most grave battle is the internal question between the corporate and creative types. Did the splitting of a single finale film into two parts truly improve on its ability to impart this grand tale or was it purely for financial reaping? From what we see in part one of the seventh film in this franchise, it turns out the answer is a lot of both.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Financially, the film has already smashed a franchise record by earning $24 million on its Thursday at midnight showing at 3,700 locations in North America. That performance eclipsed a previous record of $22.2 million, which was set by the opening of the sixth film “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” at midnight on July 15, 2009. In total, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” is being released...
