- Under the name of "Mr. X", wrote the most influential article in the history of U.S. Foreign Policy. The article was published in Foreign Affairs magazine in 1947 and entitled "The Sources of Soviet Conduct". The article basically set the tone for America's Cold War policy for the following 40 years.

- Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989 by president George Bush.
- Won the 1957 Pulitzer Prize in History for his 1956 book "Russia Leaves the War". The book also won the Bancroft Prize, the Francis Parkman Prize, and the National Book Award.
