A bunch of sequels and a remake are vying for the Best Visual Effects Oscar this year, many of them from Disney, including Bill Condon’s live-action remake of Disney’s classic “Beauty and the Beast,” Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Three Fox films offer stunning VFX: “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which advances its visual effects technology over the last Matt Reeves installment featuring Weta Digital’s astonishing array of digital apes led by performance capture master Andy Serkis as Caesar, could win Weta’s Joe Letteri (“Avatar,” “King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings”) his fifth Oscar. Another visually sumptuous sequel is Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049.” And Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” is also impressive.

Starz released news today about the casting of two more roles for Outlander Season 3.
Gary Young has been tapped to play Mr. Willoughby and Charlie Hiett will join in the role of Captain Thomas Leonard.
A Chinese man with a deep knowledge of Eastern medicine, Mr. Willoughby is a talented poet in exile, with an even deeper love of women.
Willoughby, a confidante of Jamie Fraser, speaks English well, but hides it when it suits him. He is even more of an outsider than Claire in 18th century Scotland.
New Zealand native Gary Young is a graduate of the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in London and Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School.
Young most recently appeared in the Netflix feature Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny and the Australian miniseries Secret City.
He also featured in Xena: Warrior Princess, Power Rangers and Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake.

As summer starts to wind down, take a riotous trip back to the fun-filled ’80s with a collection of goofy short films, spoofs, music videos and documentaries from the Reagan era. The good times will roll with music from the Residents, Ron and Nancy promoting drug use, an Academy Award-nominated short film and work from SNL alumni.
The full lineup of films that will be screened — in glorious 16mm! — is below, but some of the highlights are: Solly’s Diner, 4 a.m., an Academy Award-nominated short film starring and directed by cult character actor Larry Hankin, most well known as the “other” Kramer on Seinfeld. Java Junkie is a short film directed by former SNL writer/actor/director Tom Schiller and stars ’80s comedy movie icon Terri Garr.
There’s also four One-Minute Movies featuring oddball indie rock band The Residents.
