J Balvin has been laying low since releasing his album Jose back in 2021. Sure, there were some big collabs with Trueno and Ed Sheeran, but fans have been waiting to see what else the Colombian star has in store. Now he’s back in full force — and he’s enlisted Usher and DJ Khaled to make a splash.
His new song “Dientes” is a brash, relentlessly catchy mix of genres that interpolates Usher’s 2004 mega-hit “Yeah” with bold, completely unpredictable sounds. Some of that is because of the masterminds behind...

This week, the music world mourned the death of Steve Harwell, a founding member and frontman of Smash Mouth whose distinctive delivery helped turn “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “All Star” into multi-generational pop hits. Until his retirement in 2021, he and bassist Paul Delisle were the two consistent members of the band’s lineup since their 1994 inception. And while guitarist Greg Camp served as the songwriter behind the group’s best-known tunes, Harwell was its iconic voice — in more ways than one.

Hip-hop artiste DJ Khaled is set to return with his much-awaited 14th full-length LP and the most anticipated hip-hop event of 2023, ‘Til Next Time’, with the first single ‘Supposed To Be Loved’ featuring high-profile collaborations with Lil Baby, Future and Lil Uzi Vert. Khaled himself broke the news by sharing a powerhouse trailer co-starring his sons Asahd and Aalam Tuck Khaled, as well as his Queen Nicole Tuck Khaled.
The clip opens with Khaled on the golf course where he starts his day. He sinks a seemingly impossible shot as the video goes back and forth from his life at the beach, on a yacht, on a horse, on the basketball court, a soccer field, back on the golf course, and in the studio.
Khaled then proceeds to attack fast paced golf balls by smashing them through the galaxy beyond, symbolising his interplanetary and intergalactic reach. This is followed by...

One thing is clear from YouTube‘s latest ad leaderboard: Over the last 12 months, streaming services have put out some banger ads.
Each year, just in time for Cannes‘ International Festival of Creativity honoring top advertisers, YouTube releases a list of most-viewed advertisements across its platform. This year (June 2022-May 2023), Netflix took the No. 1 spot with a Wednesday ad that’s snatched up 38 million views to date.
HBO Max also made the list. Its first full-length trailer for much-anticipated video game adaptation The Last of Us is in fourth place with 24 million views to date.
And slot No. 9 goes to Peacock, with the first-ever YouTube Short to make the list. Its 19-second ad featuring Kevin Hart taking shots at Mark Wahlberg‘s age got more than 8 million views in the measurement period.
Some usual suspects also made the leaderboard: Apple, with 26 million views for its ad introducing the iPhone 14 Pro; Samsung,...

Asahd Khaled is embarking on a new scholastic adventure — and his father couldn’t be happier. On Thursday, DJ Khaled shared footage of the 6-year-old’s graduation on his Instagram. Khaled’s singular voice boomed as he cheered for Ashad while he crossed the stage with his small class in front of a packed auditorium. “Asaaaaaahd! I’m so proud of you boy!” the “Wild Thoughts” producer yelled. On the risers, Asahd proudly displayed his certificate of completion — including a principal’s honor roll distinction — with a bright, toothy smile.

Purchasing and shooting on celluloid film, especially in this age of closing processing labs, is expensive for large and smaller productions alike: the documentary movement got its first legs in the ‘60s as its practitioners worked with the more economical 16mm film gauge, and a second burst of momentum in the early ‘00s with the advent of digital video. And their byword is quantity: the camera needs to roll and roll, so nary anything vital in the “actuality” shooting process is missed.

A sense of foreboding haunts Under the Sky of Damascus, a sobering documentary directed by Syrian filmmakers Talal Derki, Heba Khaled and Ali Wajeeh.
The film opens with a vindicating interview: The Syrian actress Sabah Al-Salem takes a long drag of her cigarette before recounting how her refusal to sleep with a high-ranking military officer landed her in prison. She looks down at the dining room table as she answers the gentle prodding of her interviewers. “You must have heard of the problems I encountered,” she says in response to their inquiries.
The interviewers — Farah and Souhir — respond with nods. Yes, they have heard of the abuse Al-Salem faced. They know that she was abandoned by friends in the film industry and all but disappeared from public life. They also understand, on a personal level, how their deeply misogynistic country offers no recourse or salvation for women. When Al-Salem says...

Millions of women in the Muslim world live under the dominion of men, subject to their rules, confined by their power. The documentary Under the Sky of Damascus, making its world premiere tonight at the Berlin Film Festival, examines the alarming gender politics in one ancient locality — the capital of Syria.
“Women are more enslaved than ever in these times,” actress Sabah Al Salem declares in the film directed by Heba Khaled, Oscar nominee Talal Derki and Ali Wajeeh. “The biggest exploitations we face are of a sexual nature.”
The film documents an attempt by a female-led theater company to create a bold play about the power imbalance in Syrian society, based on interviews conducted with women from a variety of backgrounds. Many of those testimonies are seen in the documentary, offering stark insight into the reality faced by Syrian women.

Though the world watched — often in silence — as a decade-long civil war tore Syria apart, exiled filmmakers Talal Derki (“Of Fathers and Sons”) and Heba Khaled say an equally brutal but less visible war is still raging.
In “Under the Sky of Damascus,” which premieres Feb. 20 in the Panorama strand of the Berlin Film Festival, the duo shifts the lens to the silenced majority of Syrian women who routinely face sexual harassment, violence and abuse in their patriarchal society.
The film follows a tight-knit group of young Syrian women who embark upon on a radical project to produce a play that lays bare the culture of misogyny and sexual abuse that has blighted the lives of females in their country for generations.
Fanning out across the war-weary Syrian capital, they record testimonies from actresses to factory workers to stay-at-home mothers, revealing how women from across Syrian society share the same harrowing tales of abuse,...

DJ Khaled and Jay-Z closed out the 2023 Grammys with a dramatic performance of “God Did,” but the two rappers went home from the awards show empty-handed as both lost all of the awards for which they were nominated. Khaled went into the show with six nods while Jay-Z had five.
Similarly, past Grammy darlings Taylor Swift and Adele each only won one award despite multiple nominations.
While Swift is the only solo female artist to win three album of the year Grammys, she failed to collect another key big four award, losing the much sought-after song of the year prize for the 10-minute version of “All Too Well.” However, the music video for that won an award during the Grammys’ Premiere Ceremony, but Swift wasn’t there to collect what would be her one award of the night.

The rap nominations for this year’s Grammys came with a few surprises among the expected nominees. While field favorites like Kendrick Lamar and DJ Khaled got in, many were surprised by the inclusion of newer, buzzier acts like GloRilla and Jack Harlow. Still, the nominations did a good job capturing the state of mainstream hip-hop in 2022. But when it comes to winning, some artists may have it easier than others. Let’s consider who’s in the lead, and who might be able to upset them as well in Rap Performance and Rap Album categories.
SEEGrammy predictions: Can Tony champ ‘A Strange Loop’ hold off Michael Jackson in Musical Theater Album race? Best Rap Performance
This will be a battle between the two general field-nominated songs: Kendrick Lamar’s “The Heart Part 5” and DJ Khaled and company’s “God Did.” On one hand, Lamar is a field darling and wins more often than not.

Dhaka, Dec 23 (Ians) Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer slammed counter-attacking fifties to put India in an advantageous position on day two of second Test against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, here on Friday.
It was a day where Bangladesh took out India’s top three in the first session and then took out Virat Kohli quickly in the second session to leave them at 94/4. That’s when Pant and Iyer joined forces for an important 159-run stand for the fifth wicket, which made the difference for India in taking a sizable 87-run lead.
Though the duo fell short of their respective centuries, as Pant made 93 off 104 balls and Iyer scored 87 off 105 balls, the efforts from the left-right batting duo on a tough, deteriorating pitch, including making 140 runs in the second session at a run rate of 5.6.
Bangladesh openers Zakir Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto did well to negotiate six tricky overs before stumps.

Dhaka, Dec 21 (Ians) Despite Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan bowling only 12 overs in the first innings and not rolling his arm over in the second innings of the first Test against India due to shoulder and rib injury, bowling coach Allan Donald said the left-arm spin all-rounder will be present to bowl in the second Test at Dhaka.
“Shakib is okay, he will bowl. He was bruised and battered in the one-day game here, but he has gone through that. He is available for selection, and available to bowl,” he said in the pre-match press conference.
Donald added that in place of injured Ebadot Hossain, Taskin Ahmed will be taking his place in the playing eleven. “It will be the same three spinners and welcoming back Taskin. Khaled as well. Sorry to the selectors but I am talking out of the room a little bit. That’s what I can see happening.

Chattogram, Dec 14 (Ians) Cheteshwar Pujara and Shreyas Iyer got India back on track against Bangladesh through an unbeaten 62-run stand to take the visitors to 174/4 in 56 overs at tea break.
Though India batted a little slower than in the first session, they managed to get back into the match in the second session. Despite Rishabh Pant’s counterattack being tamely ended by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Iyer brought out his usual attacking shots against the spinners intermittently to be 41 not out, while Pujara was as solid as a rock in his unbeaten 42.
In the first over post lunch, wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan dropped Pujara’s catch off Ebadot Hossain despite him making a full stretch to his right. Pant carried on his good work from the first session, nailing pull and slash off backfoot, before slog-sweeping Mehidy over deep mid-wicket for six.

Chattogram, Dec 14 (Ians) Bangladesh took out captain K.L. Rahul, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in the first session of the Test series opener to restrict India to 85/3 in 26 overs. At lunch, Rishabh Pant was unbeaten on 29 with Cheteshwar Pujara giving him company at 12 not out.
For Bangladesh, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam picked two wickets while Khaled Ahmed had a scalp against his name in a wonderful morning session for the hosts.
