Parveen Babi Once Dropped Truth Bombs About Amitabh Bachchan & His Stardom. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Bollywood and its golden statements lay in the era of the 90s. Not because the stars were difficult to reach but only because whatever they said was less fabricated and filtered since there was no constant moral policing or calling out. Interviews were unabashedly real, and one such interview was when Parveen Babi opened up about Amitabh Bachchan and had some thoughts about his popularity.
An old video has cropped up on the internet where the Shaan actress was seen talking about her co-star in many films. The duo has worked together in many films, including Kaalia, Amar Akbar Anthony, Namak Halaal, Kaala Sona, Kranti, and Kala Patthar.
For the unversed, Parveen Babi died struggling with mental health after she was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. It was rumored that she used to believe that Amitabh Bachchan would kill her.

Mumbai, Feb 18 (Ians) A Friday is the day when a new film releases in India. The exhibition trade plans its calendar of 52 weeks according to Fridays. Box Office is the term that gets bandied around. The entire film industry awaits positive box-office returns starting every Friday. That is where the wealth is created, the wealth that refuels the industry and keeps it going.
A cinema is the vehicle that carries your films to the people. Earlier, the word was masses, but because of the kind of exhibition trade that exists now, the word masses can no longer be used. Masses included people from all strata of society and gave a film the initial fillip. Watching a film was affordable and these masses made provision to watch a new film every Friday or during the weekend.

Content is king is the belief the film industry has thrived upon all along. An appropriate casting as per the needs of the story completed the basics of making a film. A director craved for a good performer rather than a star and did not chase a star just for the sake of it.
It was because of content that films with no star value such as ‘Saraswatichandra’ (Manish), ‘Kora Kagaz’, ‘Dosti’ (Sudhir and Sushil) and ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (Salman Khan) went on to become hits. These are just a few examples.
Rajesh Khanna had delivered many flops before he could give his first hit and so had Amitabh Bachchan. When a good script that matched their talent and persona came up, it made them a star.
When a star is born thanks to a few huge hits, everybody wants to cast him and this phenomenon causes the downfall of a star.

When nothing works, how to make things work? No filmmaker, nor trade pundits have ever been able to predict this. In fact, there have been many instances of some film critics who could not predict a film’s success after watching it! Let alone film critics, even distributors who rejected a film after seeing it, have been proved wrong. In those days, a film was open for all distributors to watch during various stages of its making or even when completed. Many a time, a film thus rejected went on to become a blockbuster.
There were no buyers for ‘Zanjeer’, the Amitabh Bachchan blockbuster. The producer had to sell it for a song where the terms let the distributor keep the entire profit, instead of sharing it 50-50 with the producer as per the norm.

Looking at the first half of the year, January to June 2023, one would believe that the film industry has yet to come out of the Covid-19 lockdown effect. The films just don’t seem to work. Nor do the top-billing stars. Were it for the Covid-19 hangover, how does one explain the blockbuster success of ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘The Kerala Story’? How does one account for the success of ‘Pathaan’, ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar’,’Zara Hatkke Zara Bachke’, and the last year’s release ‘Drishyam 2’?
As against these successes, what explains the failure of such massively budgeted vehicles such as ‘Adipurush’, to cite the very recent example? Looks like the Hindi audience is not lured by films that are mainly made on computers with VFX!
Indians miss the human story, emotions, humour and music. Something closer to their heart, what they can identify with. The viewers want normal...

AnalysisWith Netflix’s ‘The Romantics’ starting conversations around the Yash Chopra reign in Bollywood, we revisit a few of his popular films to see how he depicted women on screen.Sridevi in ChandniRohit’s first glimpse of Chandni is at a friend’s wedding. As the enchanting woman, dressed in a resplendent red lehenga, dances stirringly to ‘Mere Haathon Mein’ — a slyly worded song that illustrates the anxiety of a bride on a wedding night, he is mesmerised. He throws a dupatta around him, sneaks into the all-women gathering, and takes several pictures of her. And in the very next scene, he pulls her towards him and proposes to her in no uncertain terms. Chandni (a charming Sridevi) blushes, and the love story begins. In Netflix’s The Romantics, a series that chronicles the evolution of the Yash Raj legacy, actors and critics rave about how Chandni (1989) opened the doors for romance in Hindi cinema.

Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore recalls how she did her eye make-up as per the suggestion of the late actress Nadira in the 1969 film ‘Talash’ opposite Rajendra Kumar. Nadira, who had worked with legendary actor Dilip Kumar in ‘Aan’ and also with the ‘showman’ of the industry Raj Kapoor in ‘Shree 420’ told Sharmila that her eyeliner doesn’t gel well with her face and she should use eye pencils to make it look perfect.
Sharmila shares: “I was shooting for the film ‘Talash’ in Kashmir. Nadira ji called me and said ‘the way you put your eyeliner doesn’t gel with your face’. She suggested using an eye pencil and then smudging. From then, it became my style.”

When one is writing about Amitabh Bachchan it indeed is an existentialist dilemma what to add as a form of content, as so much information about him is available in all forms of content and the dilemma is further accentuated when Amitabh Bachchan chips in with his own content on a rather regular basis through all the available platforms of social media. But as they say, where there is a will to share an information, the writer indeed finds ways. The cue for this story arose from Sidharth Bhatia’s book on Manmohan Desai, titled, Amar Akbar Anthony which is replete with interesting bit of information about Amitabh Bachchan and the kind of relationship that he shared with Manmohan Desai.
How many of us would be aware even about the fact that Manmohan Desai had commented on Amitabh Bachchan that this six-footer would go nowhere, but after Amar Akbar Anthony...

Along with expressions and mannerisms, it is the voice that makes a successful actor. But there are times where the film may demand that the performer just use facial expressions and body language, without any words, to emote – and that can test their calibre. Blessed with a resounding baritone – and a fine singing voice too, Amitabh Bachchan was several times called to demonstrate his prowess in this respect – and never disappointed.
Manoj Kumar described his voice as “a mellow whisper, sounding like the murmurs of a thundery cloud” at their first meeting in September 1967, when Amitabh arrived in Bombay to try his luck in the film industry, the first film that he got – “Reshma aur Shera” (1971) had portrayed him as mute.
This, as per director and producer Sunil Dutt – who fulfilled his promise of giving him a break – and writer Ali Raza, was to evoke greater audience sympathy for him.
Along with expressions and mannerisms, it is the voice that makes a successful actor. But there are times where the film may demand that the performer just use facial expressions and body language, without any words, to emote – and that can test their calibre. During the school times the first-hand experience of enacting the role of a teacher on the Teacher’s Day (5th September) was an anticipated day as on this day we got a chance to play the role of a teacher. While preparing for that day had a palpable excitement, the occasion during those school times also underlined how did the Teachers enacted their role in moulding the future of the children day in and day out. Hindi cinema has also over the course of 75 years of its journey time and again touched this unique institution and reminded the citizens of the country about the important role a teacher plays in the life of an individual!
Evolution of the character of Teacher on the silver screen has been a study in motion. It has evolved from being an idealist and non-compromising one to being a teacher with his or her human fallibilities as well.

The Salman Khan-starrer Wanted was released on this day 11 years ago.
The 2009 thriller, which heralded Salman's golden run of annual Eid blockbusters, is also widely considered the film that cemented the actor's position as an action superstar.
Importantly, the film came at a time when several of Salman's releases had fared below expectation. "Wanted", a mass entertainer, helped him turned the box office tide in his favour.
Directed by Prabhudeva, "Wanted" was a remake of Puri Jagannadh's 2006 Telugu blockbuster "Pokiri", starring Mahesh Babu and Ileana D'Cruz.
"Wanted" featured Vinod Khanna, Prakash Raj, Mahesh Manjrekar, and Ayesha Takia in pivotal roles along with Salman. The film's dialogue "Ek baar jo maine commitment kar di, toh main apne aap ki bhi nahi sunta" continues to be a rage with Salman fans till date.

Recalling the film's success, producer Boney Kapoor tweeted: "#Wanted marked the revival of single screen cinemas.

Wanted released 11 years ago.Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia in leading roles and were supported by Vinod Khanna, Mahesh Manjrekar, Prakash Raj, Manoj Pahwa, Mehek Chahal, Inder Kumar and Aseem Merchant.
It was the official remake of the Telugu flick Pokiri (2006). Prabhudheva first made its remake in Tamil and then also helmed the Hindi version. The film was about a cop who goes undercover as a ruthless gangster and finishes off two notorious gangs and their masters in Mumbai.
Salman Khan played the role of a charming undercover officer under the disguise of a crook. He was named Radhe, and it can only be ironic that the film that revived his career back in 2003 as well also had him play a man called Radhe (Tere Naam).
After the success of this actioner, Khan found his way to the top, with Eid being his lucky festival. The bandwagon continued with Dabangg,...

While it is known that everyone has a time, nothing prepares us for losing those who are family and those who we have come to admire. While he may have been a bigger name even before I was born the name of Rishi Kapoor was an inheritance from my parents, who they themselves grew up in cinema halls watching his films and passing those memories onto me by showing me those films in whatever the technology of the time. For me, Rishi Kapoor was not the first dancing star, but he was the first to make it important for the hero to be able to dance.

When Saif Ali Khan entered Bollywood in 1993 as a 23-year-old, his claim to fame was being veteran actress Sharmila Tagore and legendary cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi's son. It didn't help matters that his debut film "Parampara" failed to ignite the screens despite the presence of Aamir Khan along with stalwarts Vinod Khanna and Sunil Dutt, and despite being directed by Yash Chopra. To make matters worse, when he tried going solo as a hero in his second release with Umesh Mehra's "Aashik Aawara", the outcome was a disaster. The audience wrote him off as a misfit in Bollywood, who could neither act nor fight nor dance on screen.
The turning point came when he took to comedy, after as many as four releases failed to have any impact for him. His fifth release, the 1994 rom-com "Yeh Dillagi" co-starring Akshay Kumar and Kajol, wasn't exactly a blockbuster, but...

A peon's son dreams of being an Ias officer, somewhere in heartland India. Twists in fate force him to cross paths with lawlessness. He ends up becoming a gangster.
Now when did you hear that story before? Three decades ago, most likely, when every other film was about the good guy ending up on the bad side of life owing to circumstances.
If "Pranaam" seems like a concept straight out of the eighties, the cast and crew have insisted that was the idea. Rajeev Khandelwal's latest release strives to deliver a dash of the retro punch, hawking a suitably loud package of larger-than-life melodrama and violence. The film is blatant in the way it picks every cliche that you thought had become obsolete a while back.

Heartland socio-politics, ridden with class and caste divide, has not altered much over the decades, you could argue, which still makes this film...

The Bjp-Akali Dal candidate from Punjab's Gurdaspur constituency Sunny Deol on Thursday said he has not entered politics with vendetta issues.
Addressing a series of election rallies in Batala, he said unnecessary statements were being issued against him.
He said he would not waste his time countering such statements and instead work hard towards achieving his goal on winning the seat.
The actor-turned-politician said his mind was more occupied thinking about creating employment opportunities and development of the constituency rather than indulge in mudslinging.
He appealed to the voters to vote for the candidate who cares about the future of area.
Area legislator Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal said neither Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar nor Chief Minister Amrinder Singh could bring improvement nor initiate developmental works in the area.
The Bjp-Akali Dal has fielded 62-year-old Deol from Gurdaspur, the seat represented four times by yesteryear actor Vinod Khanna, who died in April 2017 due to cancer.

Last month, veteran actor Dharmendra brought his filmy side alive and enthralled the crowd in Mathura with his famous dialogues from the Hindi blockbuster "Sholay" as he campaigned for Hema, who has been loved by film audiences over decades.

Yash Chopra was always in love with “love”. He portrayed love on the silver screen with the imagination of the purest lover, including shades of different phases of love in life. “Chandni” was released in 1989 and was one of the matured love triangles of Indian cinema of that period, crafted with some brilliant acting, cinematography and music, under the guidance of a class director. Though for me “ Lamhe” (1991) has been the best movie by Yash Chopra, “Chandni” was more appealing to the masses and became a big hit in the late eighties, making Sridevi a household name in India.
“Chandni” screened at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles
Beautiful and bubbly Punjabi girl Chandni ( Sridevi) meets Rohit ( Rishi Kapoor) in a marriage ceremony. Rohit falls for the charm of Chandni instantly and proposes for marriage. But the complications start due to the social differences of the two families, although the love story continues.

Actor Rahul Khanna's shirtless photo on Instagram left his fans swooning - and a few distracted - and he responded wittily to many of them. The photo of the actor, only clad in a pair of red shorts as he crouches on the side of a river against a picture-perfect jungle backdrop, had garnered many likes and comments.
Rahul, the son of late Bollywood superstar Vinod Khanna, responded to some of the comments. To a fan, who wrote "Oh my heart, forgot how to breathe because my lungs were beating in my head and my nerves were tangling around my stomach and butterflies flew out of my mouth and all you did was turn back and smile. @mrkhanna, he said, "This would make a fascinating medical case study!"
As a fan complained of distraction from studying after seeing the photo, Rahul advised, "Please close Instagram and get back to...
