Marijuana remains illegal in the state of Tennessee, where presently only low-thc products skirt the state’s confusing and hyper-restrictive laws. But that nugget didn’t stop legislators from making a country song about a Vietnam veteran who takes up pot farming Tennessee’s newest state song. That this all happened on 4/20 — the national holiday of weed smoking — is the chef’s kiss.

One of the key members of Nashville’s “A-Team” of studio session musicians, guitarist Harold Bradley died peacefully in his sleep early Thursday morning, according to a Facebook post from his daughters. They wrote, “”Many of you know him as a successful musician and no doubt many stories will be told in the coming week. But to us, his greatest accomplishment was being the best dad in the world. We love you, dad.”

Our pick for the best score/soundtrack of last year, Carter Burwell‘s Carol composition is a magnificent piece of work, perfectly intertwined with the characters and their emotional trajectories in Todd Haynes‘ drama. Thanks to Varèse Sarabande, it’ll now get a double vinyl release this June (pre-order here), complete with three additional tracks: Patti Page‘s “Don’t You Believe Me,” Pee Wee King & Golden West Cowboys‘ “Slow Poke,” and The Four Aces‘ “A Garden in The Rain.” The collection is split between the score and songs.
Check out the details below, along with the bonus tracks embedded, and a 30-minute talk with Haynes, who will begin production on his ambitious new feature Wonderstruck next week.
Double 10″ album in gatefold jacket includes 3 songs that were not released on other formats of the soundtrack. One album features songs from the film, including Billie Holiday, Les Paul and other artists from the 1950’s.

The trailer for Gangster Squad brought us right into the world of 1940′s Los Angeles, where gangsters ruled the city under the unflinching thumb of Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) as ominous undertones vibrated against the sounds of punches and gunshots. This is a Los Angeles where crime and punishment rule rather than glitz and glamour, and the clothes, the hair, the makeup, the cars, and the guns alone let us know we are in a different time. But then a commanding female singer’s vocals cut through the chaos telling us to “get low,” while a hip-hop beat started to drive the action. This 1940′s world suddenly got a jolt of good ol’ contemporary R&B as Mr. Hov himself, Jay-z, breaks in with his track “Oh My God.” His lyrics may be from a song released in 2006, but they do not feel out of place here saying: “A journey seldom seen / The American dream.” Gangster...

After a release date delay and some reshoots, "Gangster Squad" is back on the case next month and in addition to the old-timey hats, clothes, cars and guns, there's going to be some old-timey music too. The soundtrack details for the film have been revealed, and no surprise, it's a lot of pop, swing and standards from the era. And so we get tunes from big names and legends like Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael and Peggy Lee, and contributions from lesser-known names like Pee Wee King. But perhaps most intriguing of all is that the very modern St. Vincent has delivered her take on the standard "Early Autumn," that has previously been performed by folks like Woody Herman (who co-wrote it), Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme and more. The soundtrack will land on January 8th with the movie in theaters on January 11th. Full tracklist below. [Film Music Reporter] "Gangster Squad" Soundtrack Tracklisting 1. The...
