- By way of his grandfather, literary editor Maxwell Perkins, he descends from Senator Wm. Evarts, Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and through Roger Sherman's grandfather, Roger Wellington, he descends from Edward I, King of England.
- Graduated from Yale University with a degree in theatre, and then attended The Juilliard School, where he studied acting with John Houseman.

- A Mount Union College on-campus house (Perry F. King Guest House) is named after his grandfather who was a graduate and benefactor of Mount Union. Perry King (the actor) grew up in the house, but his father (Dr. Robert King) donated the house to the college in 1981 with the understanding it would be named after his father, Dr. Perry F. King.
- He regards his role in The Possession of Joel Delaney (1972) as the best part he ever had.
- Played fictional President Blake in The Day After Tomorrow (2004). Coincidentally he attended Yale at the same time as actual President Bush.
- Daughter, Hannah, with Jamie Elvidge.

- He starred in the TV movie A Stranger in the Mirror (1993), which is a roman-a-clef on Groucho Marx and Erin Fleming, He was a stand-in for Marx, and Lori Loughlin for Fleming.
