The Geechee Witch: A Boo Hag Story
When Hollywood tells stories about witches, they’re generally set in fantasy worlds or in the past, but for many people, witches are a part of the modern world and belief in them is very real. That’s the case for the Geechee people in the southern US, and it’s a belief system explored in the latest film from Jeremiah Kipp, director of festival hit Slapface. In The Geechee Witch: A Boo Hag Story, a woman follows her husband back to the place where he was born and encounters a network of beliefs that are entirely new to her. She gradually comes to realise that she may be in very real danger. I met up with Jeremiah and with lead actress Tryphena Wade to learn more about this unusual film.

Already available on Steam and the Nintendo Switch, DreadXP took to X yesterday to announce that they’re teaming up with Cerulean Games to port DarkStone Digital’s The Mortuary Assistant to the PlayStation and Xbox later this year. A more formal announcement is expected later this year.
We’re also hoping for more info on the upcoming film adaptation of The Mortuary Assistant, which was announced last year. The film is to be directed by Jeremiah Kipp, with Patrick Ewald producing, Abbey Smith co-producing, and DarkStone Digital’s Brian Clarke and Ted Hentschke executive producing.
Released back in 2022 (check out Harrison’s take), The Mortuary Assistant centres on Rebecca Owens, a recent Mortician Studies grad, who on her first night at River Fields Mortuary, learns of a sinister presence that resides there. Reminiscent of the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse with its throwback features and faux trailers for non-existent movies, filmmaker and artist Pat Tremblay’s new book Terror in the Ailien Realms: Transdimensional Horror Movie Posters & Their Film Reviews consists of posters for and reviews of movies that have never existed!
An explanation of what this book is all about was provided in a press release (via Variety), “Drawn by the deep nostalgia of roaming video rental stores to find cool movies to watch by judging what its VHS box’s artwork would entice or beguile, filmmaker & artist Pat Tremblay has created a series of horror movie posters with the assistance of AI. He then proposed to talented individuals within the horror movie scene to write imaginary reviews for them. After scaring the crap out of players on Steam, DreadXP and DarkStone Digital’s The Mortuary Assistant has made the leap to the Nintendo Switch. And it’s brought along a friend in Beeswax Games’ Spookware.
Available now on the Nintendo eShop for $24.99, The Mortuary Assistant centres on Rebecca Owens, a recent Mortician Studies grad, who on her first night at River Fields Mortuary, learns of a sinister presence that resides there. As the dead awaken and malevolent spirits bind themselves to her, Rebecca has to learn how to combat the demons (including the figurative demons of her past) and survive the night.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for something a little more lighthearted, Spookware is also available via the Nintendo eShop for $9.99. The game involves the three skelebros -Lefti, Midi, and Righti- on a grand road trip through the cutesy world of the dead. After realizing they wasted their lives watching horror movies,...

Currently in pre-production, Kipp will also be handling the writing duties for the film adaptation of The Mortuary Assistant. “There’s a quiet, unnerving intensity to The Mortuary Assistant that creeps into the player, creating a sense that something terrible could happen at any moment,” says Kipp. “Writing the adaptation, I wanted to celebrate all of the game that terrified me as well as create a companion piece to it — honoring the dense creepy world developer Brian Clarke (DarkStone...

Bianca D'Ambrosio, August Maturo, Mirabelle Lee and Chiara D'Ambrosio in Slapface
Lucas (August Maturo) has lost his parents. He’s being looked after by his older brother Tom (Mike Manning), who is ill-equipped at cope and takes out his own stress by bullying him, so he seeks refuge in the woods, where he befriends a monster. Beautifully shot and beautifully played, Slapface captures the magic of a Spielberg film, only to transform into something emotionally devastating. It screened at Frightfest 2021 and is now getting a release on Shudder, which prompted me to discuss it with director Jeremiah Kipp.
I might not have caught Slapface at Frightfest were it not for the urging of Julie Kauffman, whose documentary The Brilliant Terror explores grassroots filmmaking. She had been really impressed by Jeremiah’s work, so I ask him how he felt about that film.

Writer/director Jeremiah Kipp has expanded his short, also titled Slapface, into feature-length; which, as with any short, is a risky undertaking. What works at fifteen or twenty minutes may be drawn out and dull at ninety. Changes to the plot may ruin the mood or message of the original. That’s even more true for something like Slapface which relied heavily on feeling and emotion.
Lucas and Tom lost their parents in a car accident, leaving Tom an unprepared and somewhat unwilling guardian for his younger brother. He would much rather be at the bar with Anna than be at home, or at work for that matter. This leaves Lucas on his own a lot and he spends his time wandering around the woods and getting into trouble with the cops,...

"What happened?" "Did you see it?" Shudder has revealed the official trailer for Slapface, an indie horror film landing on the streaming service this February. It originally premiered last year at the Cinequest Film Festival and FrightFest, also stopping by Grimmfest and the Razor Reel Flanders Film Festival in Belgium. A boy deals with the loss of his mother by creating a dangerous relationship with a monster rumored to live in the woods. When the two reach a tentative trust, a bizarre friendship is born, and Lucas is swept up in a series of primal adventures. The film stars August Maturo as Lucas, with Mike Manning, Dan Hedaya, Mirabelle Lee, Lukas Hassel, Libe Barer, Bianca D’Ambrosio, and Chiara D'Ambrosio. This won the Audience Award at Cinequest, and looks like a thrilling little horror film with a good twist in the story. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jeremiah Kipp's Slapface,...

On the surface, from its pure and simple, monster-in-the-woods logline, Slapface might sound like another Blair Witch, Slender Man-esque urban legend chiller waiting to happen. Lots of creeping, twig-snapping tension, mysterious whispers in the forest, and a plethora of halloween mask-lead visuals that you might assume will eventually play out like any other cheap Blumhouse clone. It’s a solemn surprise then that the reality is anything but.
Slapface, after all, isn’t the monster, but a highly sinister game, played by two recently-orphaned brothers, struggling to make ends-meet, now on their own in a secluded house on the margins of society. The older Tom (Mike Manning), has turned to drinking to feed his grief, while the much younger Lucas (Girl Meets World’s August Maturo), struggles with loneliness, spending his days wandering the woods, trying (and failing) to escape local bullies.

William Sadler (Bill & Ted) and Mike C. Manning (God’s Not Dead) are set to star together in an upcoming horror thriller called Slapface, which will be written and directed by Jeremiah Kipp.
The film follows Lucas (August Maturo from The Nun), “who lives with his older brother (Manning) after the loss of their parents. Lucas befriends a Monster in the nearby woods, and trouble ensues. The town Sheriff (Sadler) tries to thwart the wrongdoings of Lucas and the Monster before it is too late.”
That sounds like an interesting story that could make for a fun horror movie. It seems like it will be a darker, more horror-fueled version of the 80s film Little Monsters.

The end credits bloopers and outtakes oat the end of Black Wake suggest that what we just watched was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. Yeah, right. This shockingly bad body shocker – an eco-conspiracy zombie D-movie borrowing from Barry Levinson’s superior The Bay – is clearly meant as a serious piece of work. And it seriously sucks.
Dr Luiza Moreira (Brazilian actress Nana Gouvea, in her English-language debut) is part of a team investigating a series of strange deaths on the Atlantic coast. That strangeness is braindead people eating brains. It’s a bog-standard zombie flick lumbered with an unconvincing, overcomplicated conspiracy theory plot.
This means unrelentingly dull, straight-to-camera exposition, intercut with badly executed found footage of people going near water and having (fairly well-rendered) CG bugs leap into their mouths.

Directed by Jeremiah Kipp (The Sadist) and starring Tom Sizemore, Nana Gouvea, Jonny Beauchamp and Eric Roberts, Black Wake is a chilling sci-fi horror from executive producer Carlos Keyes and Red Entertainment Group Pictures. The film has its World Premiere at The Philip K Dick Science Fiction Festival on Saturday February 24th, in lower Manhattan at the Village Cinema East 9:30pm – and to celebrate here’s a look at the latest poster and trailer!
Specialists gather in a top-secret facility to investigate a series of strange deaths on beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. One of the team’s scientists (Nana Gouvea) examines video evidence to uncover a possible parasitic explanation for the fatalities. Also in this morning's round-up: details on the New York City Horror Film Festival and the Colorado Horror Convention, as well as information on how to watch The Walking Dead online and release details for Eli Morgan Gesner's Condemned.
The Last Witch Hunter: "The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the Queen curses Kaulder with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife.

Regardless of how you feel about horror anthology films, it’s obvious that they aren’t going anywhere. And why would they? The format allows for nascent filmmakers to flex their chops on a short segment before feeling the pressure of a full feature; and given that the short story is the most prominent and effective form of horror (just look at the masters: Poe, Lovecraft, Matheson), it also provides the opportunity to experience these tales visually without stretching them thin to reach standard film length. It’s like reading a literary magazine from cover to cover: different styles, different effects, different scares. I’m all for it.

Creator Scott W. Perry tells Fango, “After the success of the first season, we’re moving forward with a bigger slate of movies with more talented filmmakers to come. Ten episodes are confirmed, and we hope to fill the season with 12 in total.”
The first batch of In Fear Of entries, currently visible on YouTube, range from “Monophobia: Fear of Being Alone” to “Achluophobia: Fear of the Dark.” Pictured here are Jeremiah Kipp’s “Scotomaphobia: Fear of Blindness” (pictured right and in two photos below) and Perry’s own “Gerontophobia: Fear of Aging.” “Scotomaphobia,” Perry tells us, “stars Susan Adriensen as Emily, a woman whose downward spiral of addiction in her life coincides with her increasing loss of vision.”
Kipp elaborates: “Our main character is going blind, so imagine an episode of Mr. Magoo where our blurry-eyed protagonist is bumping lines of coke, having shrieking booze-fueled confrontations, putting herself in...

"It has been a season of cults and extreme religious visions," writes Andy Webster in the New York Times. "Vera Farmiga wrestles with faith in Higher Ground, and Elizabeth Olsen escapes a charismatic leader's grip in Martha Marcy May Marlene. In Preston Miller's dramedy God's Land, a commune of Taiwanese immigrants in Garland, Tex, waits for a spaceship to descend and deliver it to the promised land. Or dimension, rather." Ultimately, Webster finds that "Miller is far too leisurely — and takes far too much time — with a story largely blind to the sometimes fatal cost of fanaticism."
For Andrew Schenker, writing in Slant, "while Miller has his share of fun reveling in the absurdity of the group's belief system and behaviors, he's far more interested in both the fraught interaction of alien cultures and the emotional toll the need to believe can exact on individuals and families. Organized into...

The first thing people will notice about horror director Alan Rowe Kelly (Don't Look In The Basement, I'll Bury You Tomorrow) is that he is a gender bender, but Kelly has been bending more then genders his entire career as he has broken out the idea of conventionality. At the age of 39, with 40 just right around the corner, he had an epiphany. Bored with a career as a stylist, he made the sudden and dramatic move to horror. First testing the waters as an author, he switched over to the world of indie horror film directing where he won great acclaim for "I"ll Bury You Tomorrow". As he continued to direct films, he also started making a name for himself in the indie horror world as an actor playing power players, agents, something that rhymes with witch, etc. These were powerful, empowered characters that personally reflected upon Alan Rowe Kelly himself.

Brian S- First off, how'd you get into film making?
Swp- I’ve always loved film and I guess it was just a product of being raised in the right era for horror. It’s a clichéd story but it’s a true story. My relatives never looked beyond the rating of a horror film to allow me to watch it and there were some movies I remember seeing in the theater.

Director Jeremiah KippThe Sadist was previously known as Swine and the film stars make-up phenom Tom Savini (The Dead Matter). The script has been penned by Fangoria writer Jeremiah Kipp and The Sadist will be Kipp's debut in the director's chair. The first trailer for this feature shows a crazed Savini taunting and tormenting hunters in the bush. Maniacal eyes aside, this independent project has potential despite the challenges of a small budget. No word on the release, but low budget horror fans can look at the clip inside.
