Earlier this month, Deadline kicked off its Hollywood Contraction series by checking in with the acting community to see whether opportunities have picked up since the end of the strikes.
The response wasn’t so positive. On top of fewer shows in the works and the disappearance of pilot season, the available acting gigs are paying less than they used to amid rising cost of living, making it hard for many working actors to afford their rent or mortgage and support their families.
So we went to the front lines to the people who would know best — casting directors– to ask about the contraction going on in the industry, and whether the fears are justified. Though just about everybody acknowledges that change is happening, they also remain optimistic about the future.

Together Films Acquires Worldwide Rights to SXSW Documentary ‘An Army of Women’ – Film News in Brief
Together Films has acquired the worldwide rights to “An Army of Women,” which will have its world premiere at South by Southwest in March.
The feature documentary, directed by Julie Lunde Lillesæter, follows a group of women in Austin, Texas, who join together to help build a movement of plaintiffs legally challenging the system that allowed their rapists to walk free.
“We believe ‘An Army of Women’ presents a compelling opportunity for major streamers and buyers. This unprecedented story shows that through resilience and solidarity, the systems that fail us can be changed. Our hope is that this can be a catalyst for change for the rest of the US, and that global audiences will be left with the same optimism and fighting spirit that drives the women in our film,” Lillesæter said in a statement.

20th Century Fox TV is set for a changing of the guard in June as longtime business operations leader Howard Kurtzman will retire and Carolyn Cassidy will take the solo reins as president.
Kurtzman has been with Fox since 1997 and is one of the most highly regarded business affairs executives in the TV biz. Kurtzman and Cassidy, president of creative affairs, have jointly run 20th TV together since July.

Kurtzman’s retirement comes after a period of realignment for 20th TV and other Disney TV production banners following the Mouse’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in March.

Ever since 20th Century Fox TV heads Dana Walden and Gary Newman took over Fox Broadcasting Co. in summer 2014 to become chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group, Fbc and 20th TV had been deepening their integration with a number of executives promoted to Ftg posts to oversee areas for both corporate siblings. That worked fine until Disney recently made a $71.3 million deal to acquire key Fox assets, leaving the two parts of Ftg on different sides of the new Disney-Fox divide — 20th TV will be moving to Disney while Fbc will remain part of the new “Fox”.
The move leaves top Ftg executives in no man’s land. The list includes Ftg Chief Marketing officer Shannon Ryan, Evp Casting Sharon Klein, CFO Robert Barron and Svp Brand Management & New Media Strategy Michael Gooch.
