Maintaining its status as a vast churning mill of content, Netflix has regularly made giant leaps in original content making. To keep new titles coming in, it has often turned to adapting existing novels and video games such as The Witcher. However, with animation, the streaming giant faced disappointments with cancellations of projects like Ember and Cattywumpus. Yet, its fortune has always given way to critical acclaim with the Castlevania series, including Castlevania: Nocturne.

Generally, anime series are adapted from mangas or comics that have a broad storyline, a bunch of characters, and a central theme. However, there are some anime series that have been adapted from popular video games. The best example of this is Castlevania on Netflix. The series not only got four seasons but also had a spin-off sequel.

Richard Armitage’s Trevor Belmont from Castlevania is an extremely iconic and beloved character from the story. Even in the games, his character was always extremely memorable in every way, having great responsibility on his shoulders. In the animated series, Armitage’s portrayal of the character as his English voice was truly iconic through the four seasons.

Before “The Last of Us” and “Arcane,” it was Netflix’s and Powerhouse Animation’s “Castlevania” (now in its fourth season) that broke the video game adaptation curse with a highly stylized, anime-inspired horror-action show based on the Konami video game series. Now, the spinoff series “Castlevania: Nocturne” moves the action forward 300 years to the time of the French Revolution. With the new time period comes new themes, an expanded worldview, and a big change to the show’s visual style. Unsurprisingly, the biggest change was in the action, all thanks to one invention: Firearms.
“We had guns,” director Sam Deats told IndieWire. “A rifle-axe was my favorite thing, inspired by a trip to a New York museum that had a whole display of different weapons mixed with guns, and I just wanted to incorporate some of that in the show.”

Netflix’s Castlevania animated series helped break barriers for not only its medium, but also the longstanding stigma that video game adaptations were doomed to fail. Castlevania gracefully bowed out after telling a complete story over the course of four seasons. However, it was revealed that the franchise would continue, albeit with new Castlevania series within the same universe, almost in a style that’s akin to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Castlevania: Nocturne is the first of these new Castlevania series and it follows Richter Belmont, Maria Renard, and a team of intrepid monster hunters in an apocalyptic struggle that’s set against the French Revolution. Castlevania: Nocturne builds upon its predecessor’s strong foundation and finds a careful balance that will appease both fans of the original and newcomers alike. You can read my full review of the debut season here.

Beloved limited horror comic series Wytches, written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Jock, is finally set to get an adaptation.
Variety reports that Amazon ordered an animated series based on the six-issue comics published from October 2014 through March 2015.
The Image Comic series tells of 17-year-old Sailor Rook and the Rook family as they moved to a small New Hampshire town following a tragic incident. They want to start over but realize there’s an evil lying in wait in the woods just outside of town. Ancient creatures that feed on our deepest fears and hopes.

A new Castlevania anime series is in the works at Netflix, which should come as no surprise considering the success of the first show and how well received it was by fans of the video game franchise. With its four-season Castlevania series, the streamer did the impossible: produce a video game adaptation that is not only faithful and respectful to its source material but is also entertaining and unique in its own right.
Indeed, one of the secrets to the series’ success is that it added layers of complexity to stories that had previously only been told in pixelated form on 8-bit and 16-bit consoles. Netflix’s Castlevania not only explored new facets of iconic characters like Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades, and Alucard but it gave their stories added historical context, placing them right in the middle of Game of Thrones-like power struggles of the land of Wallachia during the Middle Ages.

After Castlevania, based on the classic Konami video game, came to an end, the world it created is living on. As Deadline reported in April, Netflix is going forward a new anime series set in the same Castlevania universe with an entirely new cast of characters.
Today, as part of Netflix Geeked’s inaugural Geeked Week, the team behind Castlevania unveiled the new series, created in partnership with Kevin Kolde’s Project 51 Productions with showrunner and executive producer Clive Bradley.
Serving as executive producers, Kolde and Bradley will lead the new series centered on Richter Belmont — a descendant of Castlevania characters Trevor and Sypha — and set against the backdrop of the French Revolution.
Powerhouse Animation will continue to partner on the new Castlevania series as the animation studio with Sam and Adam Deats directing.

Netflix has ordered a “Castlevania” spinoff series from the original show’s producers, the streaming service revealed Friday. The spinoff is focused on Maria Renard and Richter Belmont, the son of Sypha and Trevor, and set in 1792 France during the French Revolution.
The “Castlevania” franchise launched in the late 1980s as an action-adventure gothic horror video game series about vampire hunters. It was created and developed by Konami.
After many, many more installments, Netflix turned “Castlevania” into an anime series — the very first for the streaming service. The 10-episode fourth and final season premiered last month.
“Castlevania,” the series, is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, who’s trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepes himself. Its voice cast included James Callis, Emily Swallow, Matt Frewer, Tony Amendola and Alejandra Reynoso.

Set in the demon-populated dark fantasy medieval Wallachia, the anime-influenced Castlevania series on Netflix follows a cast of both the villainous and the virtuous…or rather, those on the spectrum of virtuous. This Castlevania article contains spoilers.
Castlevania season 4 may be the end of the line for Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades, and Alucard, but it likely won’t be the last Netflix adaptation of the long-running video game franchise. In fact, the streamer is already planning a new series set in the same universe but starring different characters. What form this Castlevania series would take remains a well-kept secret, although a reasonable guess would be that it’ll take place during a different era before or after Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard’s adventures.
Konami’s prestige franchise has a timeline that spans hundreds of years, tracking the history of the Belmont clan, a family of monster hunters tasked with sending Dracula back to the grave every time he’s resurrected. According to the video game lore, Trevor is the closest descendant of Leon Belmont, the first in the line of vampire slayers.

Netflix’s Castlevania took a major gamble in its second season by killing off its main villain. But as the third season of the video game-based animated series proves, the death of Dracula is only the beginning of the vampire story expertly crafted by writer Warren Ellis, director Sam Deats, and showrunner Kevin Kolde. In fact, now unshackled from the Lord of Darkness and his monster-filled castle, Castlevania season 3 is able to explore quite a few new and interesting directions that flesh out this world like never before.
From the first episode, Castlevania season 3 feels like a completely new show, one less resembling the horror adventure of the first two seasons and more the political intrigue and war games of a prestige series like Game of Thrones. In essence, the fallen Dark Lord has left behind a power vacuum in Wallachia and the struggle that ensues takes up much of season 3’s 10-episode run.

With every day that passes, Castlevania season 3 creeps ever closer.
Netflix has yet to announce an official release date for the new installment, but this past weekend, the online streaming giant posted a suitably stylish first-look image for the show’s third season, teasing old faces and new threats.
Embedded below, the HD pic features a pretty formidable foursome, though Carmilla is the only one we recognize off the bat. Castlevania fans will no doubt remember her villainous role all throughout season 2, and the fact that she’s back to reprise her part only portends all kinds of danger for Trevor Belmont. Moreover, that the other three characters are pictured front and center suggests they’ll each play an integral role in the story of Castlevania season 3, which Netflix describes as so:

Netflix’s animated adaptation of “Castlevania” is pure bloody brilliance, distilled into two seasons with just twelve episodes. It’s beautifully animated, brimming with stylish homage to the video game series, and it revels in the violent showdowns depicted between humans and demons.
It’s also one of the most emotional and vulnerable depictions of familiar characters like Trevor Belmont and Alucard – and, yes, Dracula himself. The gruesome dirge, where an army of vampire and demon soldiers routinely eviscerate humans with gleeful fervor in the name of Dracula’s sorrow-fueled vendetta against the entire race, is oddly hopeful and tender. For what feels like the first time in the history of “Castlevania,” you want to root for the lord of all vampires. They took his love away, you see, and so the whole of humanity must pay.

Producer Adi Shankar has released the first trailer for Netflix's Castlevania Season 2 and it looks awesome! The trailer came with the following note from the producer:
"We did not set the bar at 'good enough/... We're here to create the greatest videogame adaptation of all time. Who's with us?"
Well, they certainly did a great job with the first season and, as you'll see, Season 2 is looking pretty damn great as well!
The anime series is based on the 1989 game Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, which takes place in 1476. The story follows a hunter named Trevor Belmont who tries to take out Dracula.

Netflix’s cutest death-metal fan is returning for more face-melting good times. The streaming service announced Monday at Anime Expo it has renewed “Aggretsuko” for Season 2.
The charming anime series follows 25-year-old red panda Retsuko, who works an oppressive office job by day and vents her frustrations through death metal karaoke at night. The series examines micro-aggressions, sexism, and the pressures society puts on people to conform to a specific “good” person image.
In the Season 1 review, IndieWire noted, “As it stands, this delightful season is more like filling up on Costco samples than a more substantial series binge. That’s no doubt part of its charm. If Netflix sees fit to renew it for another season, however, there’s definitely an appetite for meatier fare.”

This past summer was a memorable one for fans of Konami's video game franchise Castlevania. In addition to the release of a new four-episode animated series adaptation of the video games on Netflix, the streaming service also renewed the series for an eight-episode second season, and viewers of the show were treated to a story that took an R-rated approach to violence and a bold path with its storytelling. One of the creative forces behind the new series is Adi Shankar (executive producer of films such as Dredd and The Grey) and I had the opportunity to talk with the filmmaker about collaborating with Sam Deats and Warren Ellis, the freedom of working with Netflix, and much more.
Thanks so much for taking some time to talk with me and congratulations on Castlevania. I wrapped up watching the first season and I absolutely loved it.
Adi Shankar: Amazing, amazing.

Few would argue that July 7th belongs to Spider-Man: Homecoming, but over on Netflix, there’s another high-profile release ready to take flight, and it ought to appeal to those old-school gamers pining for some fantastical nostalgia.
Its name? Castlevania, a four-part animated series conceived by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert, and Dredd producer Adi Shankar. Split across two seasons – the second and seemingly conclusive chapter will air via Netflix in 2018 – Castlevania stays true to the Konami classic in that it follows the disgraced Belmont clan as they rise up against Count Dracula in order to bring peace to Transylvania.

If you grew up in the age of the Nes then you are more than likely familiar with the franchise classic Castlevania. Outside of Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, many would argue that Castlevania would be the next most reputable name in the early system's history. Some individuals, including myself, freaked out when we heard that our beloved Belmont family would be coming to the small-screen. At first I was somewhat disappointed it would not be live-action, but the anime-inspired depiction has been described as more adult in tone and "Game of Thrones-like". Below is the official Netflix description for the series:
"Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios,...
