Update: Gkids has announced they’ve acquired the North American rights to the film, which will be released under the title The Boy and the Heron later this year, and will not release any further details or marketing materials at this time. “Hayao Miyazaki is a living legend in filmmaking, as evidenced by his Academy Award win for Spirited Away and his two Oscar nominations for Howl’s Moving Castle and The Wind Rises,’” said David Jesteadt, Gkids president. “It’s been ten years since the world has seen a new film from Miyazaki-san, and Gkids is so proud and honored to unveil his latest, highly anticipated masterpiece in North America.”

Reports of Hayao Miyazaki's retirement have been greatly exaggerated ... again. The legendary Japanese animation filmmaker and Studio Ghibli co-founder has un-retired once more to direct "How Do You Live?," an animated movie that is said to be loosely based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Yoshino Genzaburō. A coming-of-age drama, the book centers on a 15-year-old boy who is left to grapple with the mysteries of life, the universe, and everything else in between after enduring hardships in both his personal life and at school.
If that sounds like the type of story that would make for a fitting swan song for a director of Miyazaki's repute, that's because it may actually end up being just that, but for real this time. Miyazaki has indicated his adaptation of Genzaburō's novel will be closer to a grand-scale fantasy than a simple YA drama, which again feels befitting of...

How much cuteness can a three-minute short contain? Yesterday, the answer to that question might have been different, but then two very powerful studios (each with a long history of characters known to inspire plushies) decided to surprise us with the world's most adorable collaboration.
Earlier this week, Studio Ghibli took to Twitter to tease a team-up with Lucasfilm. After triple checking the legitimacy of said tweet, the internet got overhyped on speculation. Thank God they only let our imaginations run wild for a couple of days, otherwise the reality might have been a major letdown. It turns out the actual announcement was much simpler than we realized: a three-minute short to mark the three year anniversary of "The Mandalorian."
While it's not the large scale collaboration that fans envisioned, "Zen - Grogu and Dust Bunnies" does tick many of the boxes that we hoped this dream team would achieve.

Disney+ is celebrating its third birthday by giving a present to fans of The Mandalorian.
The streaming service announced Friday that it will celebrate its own third anniversary and that of the Emmy-winning Star Wars series with the release of a new original short focused on Grogu, aka Baby Yoda, the show’s breakout character.
Zen – Grogu and Dust Bunnies, premiering Saturday on Disney+, is a hand-drawn animated short hailing from Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli. Katsuya Kondo directed the project, which features music from Ludwig Göransson. Key art can be seen below.
Disney+ launched on Nov. 12, 2019, and The Mandalorian debuted on the same day as part of the platform’s first wave of original content before immediately becoming its signature series. Created by Jon Favreau, the show has since spawned spinoff series including The Book of Boba Fett and the forthcoming Ahsoka.

Lucasfilm and Studio Ghibli have joined forces for the animated short film “Zen – Grogu and Dust Bunnies,” marking one of the most auspicious — and adorable — creative partnerships for either entity.
The hand-drawn short film, which debuted on Nov. 12 on Disney+, brings together the adorable alien child Grogu from “The Mandalorian” and the anthropomorphized coal dust bunnies from Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning masterpiece “Spirited Away.”
The short is the directorial debut of Katsuya Kondo, a veteran Studio Ghibli animator who has served as the animation director on Miyazaki’s features “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and “Ponyo.” The simple, three-minute film begins with Grogu in a state of meditation, until a pack of dust bunnies see and gently pursue him. The short also features music from “The Mandalorian” composer Ludwig Göransson.
