The CW Network, in partnership with CBC, today announced it has renewed the hit series Wild Cards for an expanded 13-episode second season. The second season will debut on The CW in the U.S. and CBC in Canada in 2025.
The procedural, starring Vanessa Morgan (Riverdale) and Giacomo Gianniotti (Grey’s Anatomy), is the network’s #1 new series in 2024 in total audience viewing, according to Nielsen.
“We are thrilled to order a second season of The CW’s breakout series Wild Cards,” said Liz Wise Lyall, Head of Scripted Programming, The CW Network. “Wild Cards has clearly captured the imagination of our viewers thanks to exhilarating storytelling and the crackling chemistry between Vanessa and Giacomo.
“We are confident Wild Cards is the kind of smart and sexy blue-sky drama that could continually build its audience for years.”

Canadian procedural Wild Cards is coming back for a second season on The CW.
The renewal news came this morning as originating broadcaster CBC renewed the show and unveiled it at its Upfronts.
It marks a bit of good news for The CW, which canceled Walker earlier this week, while Canadian drama The Spencer Sisters, which it also aired, was canceled at CTV.
The show, stars Grey’s Anatomy’s Giacomo Gianniotti, Riverdale’s Vanessa Morgan and Jason Priestley, has been one of The CW’s stronger performers over the last year.
Earlier this month, The CW’s President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz told Deadline that he was keen to bring back the show for more episodes.

Canadian procedural Wild Cards has been one of The CW’s stronger performers over the last twelve months.
It was somewhat surprising, then, that the show which stars Grey’s Anatomy’s Giacomo Gianniotti, Riverdale’s Vanessa Morgan and Jason Priestley, hasn’t been quickly snapped up for a second season.
The CW’s President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz told Deadline in February that the network was in conversations with Blink49 Studios about more episodes coming to the network.
Those talks are still ongoing, but the suggestion is very much that it will continue on The CW.
“You’ll probably be hearing more announcements from us very soon,” he told Deadline this morning. “That show did great. It grew 10% versus what The Flash did in the same spot the year before. So, here we are beating shows that everyone’s very romantic about. We’d very much like to renew that one.

Wild Cards, a Canadian police procedural, has become a surprise hit for The CW.
The series, which stars Grey’s Anatomy’s Giacomo Gianniotti, Riverdale’s Vanessa Morgan and Jason Priestley, launched in January.
It has been averaging over 500,000 in the live overnights, per Nielsen, which The CW President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz says will likely go to around 1M over the first seven days.
This is what constitutes a hit for the network. “That’s a nice success for us. If we can do seven nights a week with a million viewers, that would be goal number one, then two million,” he told Deadline.

Schwartz added that he has already begun discussing a second season of the show, which comes from Blink49 Studios.
“We have not renewed it yet but that is a conversation that’s happening right now.

After 23 unbelievable, uninterrupted days of screenings, today marks the Closing Night of the 19th edition of the Fantasia Film Festival. There is always a sadness lingering in the air on the last day. I often compare it to the feeling you get as a kid on the final day of summer camp. You get to spend an entire month with a group of friends from around the world knowing you might not have the opportunity to see some of these people again for an entire year. Known worldwide as North America’s longest-running genre film festival, Fantasia is special because of the people who not only make it happen but also for those of us who choose to spend the beautiful hot summer days crowded inside a gloomy theatre to watch movies we might not have the chance to see otherwise. And for the sixth consecutive year, the event succeeded...

Set in an age of honour and justice by the sword, Last Knights tells the story of Raiden (Owen) – a fallen warrior who must rise up against a corrupt and sadistic ruler to avenge Bartok (Freeman), his dishonoured master. Think of the film as something akin to Seven Samurai but set in the middle ages and you’ll be somewhere close.
If I’m honest, I’m not the biggest fan of historical epics – give me a down and dirty, straight to DVD schlockfest over one any day. However when said historical epic the English language debut of famed Japanese director Kazuaki Kiriya (Casshern, Goemon), I can’t help but put my prejudices aside.

About Last Knight: Kiriya’s Culture Club Reimagining of the Feudal System
It’s unclear for who or for what reason Japanese director Kazuaki Kiriya decided to undertake his English language debut, Last Knights, a convoluted pseudo-revenge flick that plays like some very watered down version of the classic 47 Ronin mythos but reconstituted within a parallel universe’s sci-fi inspired Crusades tale. A gig is a gig, so we can’t blame the poo poo platter of multicultural actors portraying peoples we’re supposed to believe all resided in the same place (not to mention, fought for the same cause), each with varying degrees of accented and/or broken English. Incredibly flaccid and late staged action sequences following a baffling revenge plot don’t help matters, except maybe to say that even if the world had known an age of such incredible diversity we still wouldn’t be able to all just get along.

Filmed a full two years ago, Last Knights has been inhabiting a misty limbo-land waiting for release. It seems it's finally emerging, blinking into the sunlight of 2015, however, and to prove it here's a trailer to show us what we've been missing while we watched Game Of Thrones instead. Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman are the stars, both upstaged by Freeman's moustache.Shot in and around Prague but set in a medieval fantasy-land, Last Knights is the story of Owen's Raiden, a swordsman employed by Freeman's dishonoured Lord Bartok to lead a band of warriors against corrupt ruler Gezza Mott (Headhunters' Aksel Hennie).Kazuaki Kiriya is the director, making his first film on actual sets and locations, following the entirely green-screen antics of Casshern and Goemon. The film was shot in 2012 by Japanese filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya (The Legend of Goemon), but it's been sitting on a shelf waiting for release since then. And now that the first trailer has arrived, it's easy to see why no one has been clamoring to get this movie on the big screen. The epic follows Owen as a fallen warrior who rises against a corrupt and sadistic ruler (Aksel Hennie) to avenge his dishonored master (Morgan Freeman). Watch? Here's the first trailer for Kazuaki Kiriya's The Last Knights from USA Today: The Last Knights is directed by Kazuaki Kiriya (The Legend of Goemon) with a script from Michael Konyves (Barney’s Version). The film follows Clive Owen (Sin City,...

If it wasn't for Steven Soderbergh's "The Knick" what would Clive Owen have to cling toc For now he has Last Knights in which he plays Raiden, a fallen warrior who rises against a corrupt and sadistic ruler to avenge his dishonored master. Morgan Freeman co-stars and Kazuaki Kiriya directs a script by Michael Konyves (Barney's Version). Lionsgate will release the film, which began production in 2012, in theaters and On Demand on April 3. Man, I remember the days when it seemed a sure thing Clive Owen would become the next James Bond. Back in 2005, Owen was said to be in the running alongside Daniel Craig and "nip/tuck" star Julian McMahon. As we all know, the role went to Craig and now look what has happened to the two other contenders... though Owen does contend we was never offered the part.

Surely nothing could be wrong with the shot-over-two-years-ago "Last Nights," right? We can't fault the the casting —Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen are great when you give them something decent to work with. But that appears to be the problem with this medieval misfire, with the first trailer pointing towards a movie that perhaps everyone involved would hope stayed forgotten. Penned by Michael Konyves ("Barney's Version") and directed by Japanese filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya ("The Legend of Goemon"), the story follows Raiden and his band of honorable dudes who seek to avenge their master and give the baddie played by Aksel Hennie a hard time. It looks like your stand clanging-swords-raid-the-castle type deal, and you probably find more satisfying drama and action on "Game Of Thrones." "Last Knights" arrives in theaters and on demand on April 3rd. Watch below. [USA Today]...

Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to return to bodybuilding in new TV series 'Pump'. The former politician and Hollywood star has sold the rights for the TV series to Us cable network Showtime. An hour-long drama is being made into a pilot, set in 1970s Venice Beach, California, tracing the origins of the present-day fitness industry and ''culture of body worship'' to one gym called Pump. If a series then gets the go-ahead, Arnold is planned to become a recurring character. Executive producer Eric Tannenbaum said he was excited when the idea was brought to him by writer Michael Konyves. He told The Hollywood Reporter: ''We...

Rival 'roided out projects! Earlier this month, news broke that HBO was developing a half-hour dramedy about current and former athletes living in Miami executive produced by and starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Today, the Hollywood Reporter has the story that Arnold Schwarzenegger is also potentially headed to the small screen with a cable project of his own. He's sold a drama called "Pump" to Showtime, and it will be about how the present-day fitness industry and the culture surrounding it originated in the bare-bones Pacific Avenue gym of the title. While The Rock's project is a half-hour, The Governator's is an hourlong effort, and it's set in Venice Beach, CA in the early '70s. Schwarzenegger won't play the lead in "Pump," should it be ordered to series, but will recur as well as serving as an executive producer. "Pump" is being written by Michael Konyves ("Barney's Version...

Showtime is getting into business with Arnold Schwarzenegger on a drama project loosely based on the star's early days in the United States.
The show is called "Pump," and it's set at a bodybuilding gym of that name in early 1970s Los Angeles (Schwarzenegger trained at the first Gold's Gym in Venice). The show will trace the origins of the fitness boom through the gym's regulars, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Schwarzenegger will be an executive producer of "Pump," and if the show goes to series, he plans to play a recurring part. Writer Michael Konyves ("Barney's Version") and Kim and Eric Tannenbaum ("Two and a Half Men") are also executive producers.
Schwarzenegger is a seven-time Mr. Olympia bodybuilding champion, and his appearance in the 1977 movie "Pumping Iron" helped launch his film career. He's returned to Hollywood since leaving the California governor's office in 2011.

We previously reported that Clive Owen is set to star in the upcoming adventure drama The Last Knights which comes from Japanese director Kazuaki Kiriya.
But today, we’re here to add another great name to this project, because we’ve just learned that Morgan Freeman is on board as well! If you ask me – revenge never looked better!
Kiriya directs the movie from a script written by Barney’s Version scribe Michael Konyves and at this moment we know that the whole thing will center on band of warriors who seek to avenge the loss of their master at the hands of a corrupt emperor.
That’s pretty much everything about the plot so far, but you must admit that it already sounds interesting. Just imagine Owen and Freeman in Feudal Japan for a moment. Ok, we all agree that’s not bad picture at all!

The last time Clive Owen picked up a sword – aside, that is from his turn as Sir Walter Raleigh in Elizabeth: The Golden Age – we got the underwhelming King Arthur. Well, here's a pairing of actors in a genre movie that we weren't expecting at all. And not only that, it's going to start shooting very soon... Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen are to set to star in "The Last Knights." Penned by Michael Konyves ("Barney's Version") the film will be directed by Japanese filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya ("The Legend of Goemon"), and tell the tale of "a band of warriors who seek to avenge the loss of their master at the hands of a corrupt emperor." No word yet on their roles, but again, Freeman and Owen? Okay. Production is supposed to start later this month, so either this is an easy paycheck or some really good material or maybe just something in between. But yeah, we're indeed curious. Here's the interesting thing though: filming will take place in the Czech Republic. Why does that matter? Well, Robert Rodriguez has...

We were right about Barney’s Version coming out only as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has confirmed the details and set the release date for June 28.
Looks like Sony is trying out the Blu-ray/DVD combo-only release strategy with its smaller but acclaimed films. The studio is issuing Another Year only on Blu-ray/DVD on June 7. Lionsgate tried out the strategy with Buried back in January.
R-rated comedy drama Barney’s Version, which was nominated for an Oscar for best makeup, won a Golden Globe award for Paul Giamatti’s perfomance. Giamatti (Pretty Bird) plays a 65-year-old, politically incorrect, foulmouthed hockey fanatic and television producer who meets the love of his life at his wedding — and she’s not the bride. Throughout the film, Giamatti’s Barney reflects on his life and wives, including Minnie Driver (Conviction), Rosamund Pike (An Education) and Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight Saga: New Moon...

Unlike last year's two filmmaker/film horse race between Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique and Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mere, this year it was all "Villeneuve" and "Incendies". Repeating his wins in all the same categories it won at the Canadian Oscars (Genies) this week (this includes Editing, Screenplay, Best Cinematography by the excellent André Turpin, Best Actress in Lubna Azabal (who forced here co-star Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin to give her own thank you speech). These wins more than makes up for his loss last year when Villeneuve won the Best Director honor for Polytechnique, but lost in the Best Film category to J'ai tué ma mere. The predictable 13th edition also saw a Genie-Jutra winner from Barney's Version and in the Animated Film category, the Nfb (naturally) supported Theodore Ushev added a Jutra to his Genie for Lipsett Diaries. At last year’s Academy Awards, the evening’s biggest shocker came in the Best Adapted Screenplay category, with Geoffrey Fletcher and Precious playing spoiler to Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner‘s supreme frontrunner, Up in the Air. We have a relatively similar situation this year — The Social Network has been losing steam, and even if Aaron Sorkin‘s screenplay is lightyears ahead of his fellow nominees, momentum is critical in this game. The way I see it, though, Sorkin will almost assuredly earn the statue this time around because this year’s field doesn’t appear to have a Precious-like competitor that can knock him off. The nominees are:
127 Hours (Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy)
The Social Network (Aaron Sorkin)
Toy Story 3 (Michael Arndt, John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Lee Unkrich)
True Grit (Joel Coen, Ethan Coen)

Last year, noticing that studios throughout Hollywood were posting the screenplays for their “Oscar movies” online for free, I compiled the download links for every screenplay I could find and posted them to this site. The article was a hit, many of the screenplays were downloaded, and things went quiet…until a few months ago, when the page started getting a lot of traffic again, no doubt thanks to the start of this year’s Oscar season.
The problem was, a lot of those studio sites from last year have been taken down, so if, say, you try to click the link to download the Avatar script, you get an ugly Not Found error. I won’t make that same mistake again: this year, I’ve downloaded all the new screenplays and stored them here, so the links will always work.

The nominees for the 31st Annual Genie Awards, Canada’s answer to the Oscars, were unveiled at simultaneous press conferences in Montreal and Toronto yeseterday. After being snubbed by the major Hollywood awards, only receiving 1 nomination and win for Paul Giamatti at the Golden Globes, Barney’s Version has been highly recognized by Canadian audiences. Barney’s VersionIncendies leads the pack with 11 nominations including Best Motion Picture and populating most of the acting categories including one for Paul Giamatti for a Performace by an Actor in a Leading Role and Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Dustin Hoffman. Man meets woman; man marries woman; man ruins marriage and moves on to next woman; Barney has a selfish life cycle, which makes him hard to like. But there's one thing in his favour: he's played by the always likeable Paul Giamatti. It's lucky then that film maker Richard J. Lewis is directing Barney's Version (2010) of his muddled past. If not, you'd probably end up hating him by the end of the first act.
Spanning four decades and a whole lot of heartbreak, Barney's Version is one of those films that loves its actors. Giamatti's leading role won him a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Comedy or Musical - strangely though, there's not much comedy to be found here. Despite the wonky score and the dialogue's occasional dark humour, this has as many big laughs as Blue Valentine (2010), and with a similar dose of pain.

Please note: one or two mild spoilers are in this review, in case you've not heard them already. If you haven't, you might want to steer clear until you've seen the film.
Paul Giamatti, actor par excellence, isn't really one to shy away from difficult to play characters, or roles that embody the less pleasant side of human nature, and so it is with Barney Panofsky, Jewish Canadian TV producer and seeming all-round asshole.
Essentially a re-evaluation of a life lived to the full after a tell-all memoir accuses him of murder, Barney's Version unravels the confusion of a lifetime of memories to reveal the truth about the death of his best friend, along with the well buried innate goodness of its central character.

Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman in "Barney's Version"
Canadian author Mordecai Richler’s telling of Barney Panofsky’s crazy life was released fourteen years ago. And much like the events of Barney, a man with three wives and an accusation of murder to his name, the journey for his film adaptation has been eventful to say the least. Conceived by producer Robert Lantos and eventually captained by Richard J. Lewis, Barney’s Version started off as Lantos’ dream, and became an award-winning drama/comedy starring three names known by Oscar, Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, and Minnie Driver. Last Sunday, Paul Giamatti won a Golden Globe for his performance in the film.
To help make sense of it all, I sat down with director Richard J. Lewis to discuss all of the elements that went into telling Barney’s Version after so many years.
Barney’s Version opens in Chicago on January 21st.

Chicago – Working with high level actors such as Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman didn’t faze director Richard J. Lewis. He had pursued the film version of the Mordecai Richler’s novel “Barney’s Version” for several years, and it was his direction that recently got Giamatti (as Barney) the Golden Globe Award.
Lewis is a veteran of television, serving as a producer on the seminal police drama “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” from 2002 to 2009. Before that, he directed several shows, including “Due South,” Showtime’s “Beggars and Choosers” and most recently “The Defenders.” He scored a notable feature debut with “Whale Music” [1994] and even directed “K-9:Pi” [2002] starring Jim Belushi.

If you're wondering about the movie for which Paul Giamatti won a Golden Globe Sunday (Jan. 16), get in line. A really, really long line.
"Barney's Version" had a very brief awards-qualifying run in 2010 (and also played at several film festivals) and opened in limited release -- all of four screens -- on Friday (it did fairly well at the box office, earning about $18,000 per screen). Giamatti plays Barney Panofsky, a guy in his 60s who's looking back on his life and his three wives (played by Rachelle Lefevre, Minnie Driver and Rosamund Pike). The catch is that he met his third wife -- and his true love -- at his second wedding.
The movie is based on a novel by Mordecai Richler and was directed by Richard J. Lewis ("CSI"); Michael Konyves wrote the screenplay. It also stars Dustin Hoffman, Scott Speedman and Mark Addy.
The trailer for "Barney's Version" is below.

Back for its third year (see the 2010 edition) and bigger than ever, today kicks off the first in a fifteen-part look at the various cinematic releases hitting the U.S. in 2011. Each 'part' contains brief descriptions and editorial opinion/analysis of varying length covering twenty films. Expect the remaining ones to go up between now and the first major releases in mid-January.
Like all cinematic lists set within a timeframe, there's some overlap. Some films here have already opened worldwide but have yet to hit the U.S., some upcoming films you'd expect to be here aren't because they're either still in development or have already announced 2012 release dates, some were on last year's list but got delayed so have been included again (but with all new analysis).
I confined my list to films that have either set 2011 release dates or had begun/completed production, and only films that have...
