Saw X went back to its roots and is considered the best film of the franchise. The latest film saw the return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer aka Jigsaw. The events took place between Saw II and III, and the tenth film managed to recapture the magic that the franchise started nearly 20 years ago. However, it’s not because Tobin Bell has been missing from the series. The concept and appeal of the franchise have grown tired and Saw X should be the final entry in the long-running horror series. It makes sense that one of the most sadistic horror movie franchises of all time was inspired by the process of dealing with the healthcare system. In an interview with The Av Club timed to the release of "Saw 3D," writer and first film star Leigh Whannell spoke about the origins of Jigsaw, explaining that the idea for the killer came to him while he was waiting to get an Mri.
Whannell told the outlet that franchise co-creator James Wan came to him with an idea for the first film's beginning and end, but it was up to Whannell to flesh out the details surrounding the movie's major twist. "Basically the conundrum was, 'Okay, two people are stuck in a room, they've been put there by somebody. Who put them there and why?'" Whannell recalled. The answer came to him when he ended up stuck in a room, too -- but in his case,...

The "Saw" films will continue to slice and dice their way into theaters until morale improves -- or until audiences finally get tired of the über-successful horror franchise. If the universal acclaim and strong box office performance of "Saw X" proved anything, however, it's that a return to its roots was sorely needed. As the eleventh film in the series is scheduled to release later this year, that theme is about to continue in a big way.
We haven't been told much about the cast or even the plot of "Saw XI" since the sequel was first announced back in December of last year, though it's been easy to imagine the creative team picking up on the ongoing prequel storyline almost exactly where they last left off. While the involvement of the man, myth, and legend Tobin Bell remains unclear, we now know that at least one other franchise veteran...

When Saw X was announced, there wasn’t much fanfare for the sequel/prequel. Sure, it was confirmed that for the first time, John Kramer (aka Jigsaw) would be the protagonist this time around; however, the brand isn’t the popular IP that it once was due to the lack of quality. Saw will always have a special place in the world of horror; when James Wan dropped the first film in 2004, it started a new subgenre as the classic film immediately took the mainstream by storm. Saw, Saw II and Saw III are widely regarded as the best entries of the...

The Saw franchise has been collected together in various different sets over the years, with new ones usually coming along whenever new installments join the twisted saga.
There was a Saw 7-film Blu-ray Collection as well as an 8-Film Blu-ray Collection – and they’re both criminally cheap on Amazon, selling for just over $10! – and it’s through Amazon that we’ve learned this week that a brand new Saw 10-Film Blu-ray Collection is on the way!
Celebrating 20 years of the Saw franchise that was originally created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, the Saw 10-Film Collection includes every movie in the franchise up to this point.
That includes Saw X, of course, which just revived the franchise last Halloween!
According to Amazon’s listing, Lionsgate will release the Blu-ray set on March 5, 2024. The current price is $79.99, which isn’t bad when you realize you’re getting Ten movies.

2023 was a good year for villains. With social media discourse at an all-time low, public figures taking constant swipes at each other, and A.I. poised to render all news meaningless, it seems like the year was filled with nefarious people coming out of the woodwork to make our lives a little more stressful.
But no matter what nightmares we saw playing out in real life, we could rest in the knowledge that something equally evil or maybe even worse would be showing at our local cineplex or streaming platform. The horror genre is filled with larger-than-life foes from centuries-old monsters to futuristic killers and this year gave us villains in spades.
Some are humorous, some tragic, some pulled from reality, and some difficult to pin down. But regardless of their stories, the following ten villains made our lives just a little more terrifying – and if we don’t honor them here,...

Following the release of Jigsaw, it wasn’t clear where the Saw franchise would go, but I doubt anyone expected Chris Rock to pitch the next evolution of the series. Spiral: From the Book of Saw starred Chris Rock as a detective tracking down a Jigsaw copycat and was the first movie in the franchise not to include Tobin Bell. Unfortunately, Spiral only grossed $40 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics, squashing any potential sequel.
However, franchise producer Mark Burg isn’t ruling out a Spiral sequel. “Maybe one day we’ll come back to doing a sequel,” Burg told GamesRadar. “Chris Rock would love to do one, but our focus, because of the success and the response to Saw X, is Saw 11.” Saw X featured the grand return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer/Jigsaw, which is clearly what the fans wanted. Hollywood reeled in 2023. There’s no way around that. From striking creatives to the existential crisis of theatrical futures, this year held the entire entertainment industry in its death-like grasp. But as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough double down on the audience least likely to abandon ship. And anyone who’s actually sat and counted how many annual horror conventions there are knows exactly which audience to bet on.
It’s entirely possible that horror is the most stable and reliable movie genre, but just because its demographic is almost certainly the most voracious doesn’t mean they’re the least discerning. If anything, the list of films that almost made our top 10 would alone be ample ballast for the argument that horror aficionados cast their nets wider than fans of other genres. Take this list as a starting point, and then take it way further than you ever dared.

Are you ready to play another game? The "Saw" canon isn't exactly the easiest challenge for casual fans to make sense of -- Tobin Bell's John Kramer was infamously killed off way back in "Saw III," for instance, despite almost every movie since twisting itself into knots in order to include him in the action anyway -- but the series has gone on to become one of the longest-running (and most consistently-performing) horror franchises ever anyway. That streak was all but assured of continuing after the latest installment, "Saw X," earned the best reviews out of any of the movies and went on to slash its way to the top of the box office. America and, indeed, the entire world are demanding more Billy the Puppet and the maniacal Jigsaw games ... and Lionsgate has been listening.

"I want to play a game." These words carry spine-chilling weight in the "Saw" franchise, always succeeded by a set of rules for an impossible death trap that needs to be evaded within a time limit. Over the course of 10 movies, and the 7-minute short that started it all, the "Saw" franchise has ballooned into an unforgettable phenomenon that consistently deepens the mythos surrounding John Kramer/Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), while the traps become more hellish and elaborate.
Call them splatter films, or twisted psychological horror with ample gore, the entries within the "Saw" franchise have always prided themselves on their twist endings, which often re-contextualize how their stories are perceived in the first place. James Wan's directorial feature debut, "Saw," kickstarted this convention without foreknowledge of its legacy by ending on a horrifyingly memorable beat that is still widely discussed and debated.

Jigsaw will be back inflict pain once more in Saw XI, and the new film is arriving in 2024: more details here.
It is rare for any franchise to reach ten films. It is even rarer for the tenth film to receive some of the best reviews of the series.
Such was the case with Saw X, the film that put Tobin Bell front and centre one again as malicious vigilante John Kramer/Jigsaw.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the impressive box office returns of Saw X, Lionsgate has confirmed that it is pressing ahead with Saw XI.
You won’t have to wait long to see it either, as the official Saw social media accounts posted an image stating the sequel would be with us in just over nine months time, on the 27th September 2024.

At long last, Jigsaw returned in Saw X. Set between the events of Saw and Saw II, the tenth installment is a gruesome fan-pleaser led by a franchise-best performance from Tobin Bell as John Kramer.
Along with a six-part making-of documentary and more, the film’s home video release features an audio commentary by director-editor Kevin Greutert, cinematographer Nick Matthews, and production designer Anthony Stabley.
Here are nine things I learned from the Saw X commentary…
1. Kevin Greutert was unsure about the concept until he read the script.
Greutert — who edited six previous Saw films and directed Saw VI and Saw 3D — is one of the few Saw creatives to return for Saw X, but he wasn’t sold on the initial concept.

Though it hasn't quite reached the dizzying naming heights of the "Fast & Furious" franchise, "Saw" has still managed to get creative with its titles in recent years. After going with a conventional roman numeral numbering system for its first six installments, the series got a little silly with "Saw 3D," technically the franchise's seventh installment. Next up was 2017's "Jigsaw," followed by the polarizing spin-off film "Spiral: From The Book of Saw." Though that Chris Rock-led film garnered mixed reviews, it also freed up the franchise to start trying altogether new things -- which it did this year with its tenth installment, a "Saw II" prequel with a strong visual style and a much-praised John Kramer reappearance.
After three fun movie titles, though, the latest installment was simply titled "Saw X." It's a boring title, but apparently it wasn't always the plan. A Blu-Ray special feature for the...

What began as a simple two-hander about strangers chained in a squalid bathroom, enduring the twisted games of a mysterious tormentor, has evolved into an intricate saga spanning nearly twenty years and ten gruesome films. With every new "Saw" movie, the traps become bigger and more brutal, the timelines increasingly jumbled, and the twists even more mind-boggling. Each "Saw" entry delves deeper into (and complicates) the maniacal Jigsaw philosophy that forces people to confront their sins and appreciate the life they've been given.
Often regarded as part of the controversial horror subgenre "torture porn" (even though we may need to retire that term forever), the "Saw" films feature graphic depictions of mutilation and extreme violence in elaborate devices that are not for the faint of heart. From the mid to late aughts, October horror was dominated by one word: Saw. In an impressive streak, the grisly franchise celebrated seven straight years with a new entry just in time for Halloween. Though sequels have been sporadic since the 2010 film Saw: The Final Chapter, this autumn brought another tale from Jigsaw’s world of twisted morality and the return of the legendary killer himself. Director Kevin Greutert’s story follows John Kramer (Tobin Bell) on a quest for revenge, but the film also features a fan favorite character and one of the saga’s first survivors. Set between the first and second franchise entries, Saw X sees the return of Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) as an assistant/disciple of the dying murderer. Though her position in Jigsaw’s army would later be usurped by others, Amanda remains the franchise’s most heartbreaking character and the greatest condemnation of Jigsaw’s sociopathy.

No good villain is ever truly gone, especially in horror movies. This September saw the return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer, a.k.a. “Jigsaw,” the trap-making serial killer of the Saw movies, with the release of Saw X. This is despite the fact that Kramer has been dead since the end of Saw III, which came out back in 2006. But a little thing like death never stopped the Saw franchise. Instead of literally bringing Kramer back from the dead, the subsequent sequels continued Bell’s participation with devices like flashbacks. Hell, even Saw IV played a trick on audiences by staging a lot of its action at the same time as Saw III.
One of those post-Kramer sequels celebrates its 15th anniversary this year: Saw V, which featured Costas Mandylor as Detective Mark Hoffman, a murderous cop who became Jigsaw’s protégé and continued his campaign of bloodshed.

Nearly 20 years in, John Kramer continues to kill it at the box office. "Saw X," the latest installment in Lionsgate's long-running horror franchise, has officially crossed the $100 million mark globally thanks to Wednesday's grosses. Not that the movie wasn't already a hit before, but it now gets to count itself alongside seven other "Saw" movies that have grossed at least that much money worldwide, making such an impressive benchmark more of a rule than an exception.
"Saw X" curently sits at $52.7 million domestically and $47.9 million internationally for a grand total of $100.6 million worldwide to date, per Box Office Mojo. Director Kevin Greutert's film has already been available on VOD for some time, so the milestone was crossed somewhat quietly. Horror has come into its own in the 21st century. This is not to say that the genre has ever not been one of the most interesting and creative in the long history of cinema. Since nearly the beginning of the art form, using moving images to scare audiences has been a gateway for aspirin filmmakers to break into the industry—or for even veterans to creatively something about the greater world by painting a landscape of anxiety.
Nonetheless, the 21st century (particularly beginning in its second decade) has brought a renewed appreciation for scary movies’ abilities to speak to audiences with more than just “boo.” With that in mind, we at Den of Geek have polled our staff and collected the below list of what we generally consider to be the best chillers of the fast quarter-century or so. Enjoy.

The chilling franchise, ‘Saw,’ has always kept us at the edge of our seats. If you missed it at the cinema, there’s good news. ‘Saw X’ is now available for you to watch right in the comfort of your home.
The first time I watched a ‘Saw’ movie, I remember clinging to my popcorn, unsure of what twist awaited next. And from what the critics are saying, ‘Saw X’ seems to be no different. In fact, it’s been called the “best reviewed Saw film in franchise history” and has even earned the title of being “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. If that doesn’t get you excited, Fangoria states it’s “one of the best films of the franchise,” while The New York Times claims it “gives the fans what they want.” Not to mention, Indiewire declared it has the “best traps of any of the films.”

The chronology of the "Saw" movies is massively complicated, and only the most dedicated researchers have dared to map out when certain events occur. Everything surrounds the vengeful trap-builder Jigsaw, aka John Kramer (Tobin Bell) a character who actually died at the end of Darren Lynn Bouseman's "Saw III," but who still appeared in several sequels thereafter. Baffling chronologies have been a feature of the "Saw" movies from the start, with James Wan's 2004 original told mostly in flashback. Indeed, one of those flashbacks also had a flashback in it.
As far as a casual observer might tell, the films take place in the following order: "Saw," then the new "Saw X," then "Saw II." "Saw III" and "Saw IV" take place over roughly the same period, with interacting timelines. The rest seem to take place more or less numerically, although each one features additional flashbacks and appearances from Bell.

"Saw III" raises the stakes from the previous two installments by focusing on John Kramer's deteriorating health. As his frontal lobe tumor worsens, John Kramer, aka Jigsaw, is left bedridden and weak, but he still has a few tricks up his sleeve. With the help of his beloved protege Amanda, he abducts Dr. Lynn Denlon.
Lynn must conduct a makeshift surgery to ease the pressure on his brain, and she wears a collar with five shotgun shells set to detonate if John's heart rate lowers or he dies. This intense operation, which involves removing a piece of his skull, is such a memorable part of "Saw III" — even more than the traps. It is fascinating to witness the medical marvel in such detailed close-ups.

What Halloween would be complete without a little "Saw"? After the ninth chapter in the 2000s horror mainstay, "Spiral: From the Book of Saw," opened in May 2021, this year's "Saw X" saw the series return to a far more traditional, scary season-adjacent launch date in late September. The move paid off at the box office, with "Saw X" scoring the franchise's strongest box office debut in over a decade and very nearly taking the number one spot if it hadn't been for those snoopin' Paw Patrollers (I guess #SawPatrol became a real thing after all). Now, the film is headed to Premium Video on Demand and Premium Electronic Sell-Through just in time for your All Hallows' Eve watch party on October 20, 2023, with its release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital to follow a month later on November 21.

Kevin Greutert is viewing 'Saw X' as a farewell to Jigsaw. The 58-year-old filmmaker has helmed the latest movie in the horror franchise and considers it to be a goodbye to Tobin Bell's iconic antagonist John Kramer/Jigsaw.Kevin told The Hollywood Reporter: "We'll just have to see what the future of 'Saw' is."There are so many directions we could go, but for me, there's no obvious one coming out of this film. I really wanted it to feel like a kind of final send-off for the Jigsaw character, but never say never."In a first for the series, 'Saw X' has been praised by critics and Greutert thinks that the gamble to get the audience to empathise with the cancer-stricken Jigsaw has paid off.He said: "We took a risk by really fleshing out John Kramer's character. Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise, is currently in theatres (you can read our review Here) – and so far the movie has pulled in almost $60 million at the global box office, so we’re probably going to be seeing a Saw 11 sooner than later. In fact, the producers were already talking sequel before the movie was released. But during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Kevin Greutert, who previously directed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter (and also edited the first five films, plus Jigsaw) said he intended for the movie to feel like the final send-off to the Jigsaw character.
When asked about what could be coming next for the franchise, Greutert said, “Well, we’ll just have to see what the future of Saw is. There are so many directions we could go, but for me, there’s no obvious one coming out of this film.

If anyone deserved to be at the helm of the Saw franchise’s first critically acclaimed film, it’s Saw X director Kevin Greutert. The editor-turned-director has been credited on every single Saw film, be it as an editor, director or executive producer, beginning with James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s original Saw (2004). Greutert chalks Saw X’s success up to an accessible plot and the calculated risk of asking the audience to empathize more than ever with the franchise’s signature antagonist, John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell).
“We took a risk by really fleshing out John Kramer’s character. It’s contrary to the Jaws and Alien wisdom that the less you see of your monster, the better. If this movie had a chance, it was going to be by going deep into John Kramer,” Greutert tells The Hollywood Reporter.

In an early scene in “Saw X,” John Kramer (Tobin Bell) offers a succinct summary of how he chooses to spend his free time: “I help people enact positive change in their lives.”
It’s a statement that would elicit some pushback from his victims, but it feels like a fair phrasing of his perspective. The man commonly known as Jigsaw is not a serial killer in any conventional sense of the word. While he’s probably responsible for more deaths, dismemberments, and general maimings than everyone reading this combined, he never holds the weapon himself. Instead he prefers to place his victims in elaborate DIY torture devices that force them to willingly inflict massive amounts of bodily harm on themselves in order to save their lives. If they fail to perform his tasks in the impossibly short time windows that he gives them, Jigsaw feels that they have nobody...

Do you want to play a game? That creepy question from the “Saw” franchise helped distinguish the films as one of the most successful — and fun — horror brands in the history of the U.S. box office. America loved the “Saw” flicks, but how did film critics respond? Scroll through our photos below that highlight all of the “Saw” movies ranked worst to best, according to their Metacritic scores. The ninth film, a spin-off titled “Spiral: From the Book of Saw,” was ultimately reviewed rather favorably when it debuted during the Covid-19 pandemic. And the most recent sequel to the list, “Saw X,” fared even better with critics — it was a flashback story that focused more intimately on John Kramer’s cancer diagnosis. The director of Saw X shared his thoughts on the lack of connections to previous movies, including Jigsaw and Spiral.
One of the most beloved aspects of the Saw franchise, on top of its intricate death traps, is its complicated, convoluted continuity that weaves throughout nearly every single installment.
One of the biggest open ends in the franchise is Matt Passmore’s Logan, who was revealed in Jigsaw to have been one of John Kramer’s first accomplices. With Saw X taking place between Saw I and Saw II, in theory, he’d still be an active part of John Kramer’s games.

Kevin Greutert‘s Saw X takes place between the first two films of the Saw franchise and focuses on its protagonist, John Kramer/The Jigsaw Killer (Tobin Bell).
Kramer goes to a clinic outside of Mexico City and undergoes a procedure that he hopes will cure him of his brain cancer.
After he completes the operation, Kramer finds out that it was a scam that had many other victims who were also conned into having this procedure done on them.
In response, Kramer kidnaps the five people who deceived him: Dr. Cecilia Pederson (Synnøve Macody Lund), the daughter of the doctor who conducted the procedure, Finn Pederson (Donagh Gordon), Gabriela (Renata Vaca), Diego (Joshua Okamoto), Mateo (Octavio Hinojosa) and Valentina (Paulette Hernández).
Much like the previous films, Kramer forces his captors to survive death traps.
Cecilia, early on, reassured Kramer that the procedure would work, saying that his time was not up yet.
