Death Row Records introduced listeners to many of the most influential figures in hip-hop history. However, the record label’s success was short-lived as many unfortunate circumstances impeded it. Snoop Dogg was one of the central figures of Death Row in the 1990s, and he said the experience with the record company “broke [his] spirit.”

A vulnerable Lil Wayne and a teary-eyed Missy Elliott accepted the Recording Academy and Black Music Collective’s Dr. Dre Global Impact Award — which was renamed Thursday night as they also honored Dr. Dre.
Lil Wayne, who signed his record deal at 12 and turned 40 in September, won over the audience with a touching and authentic speech that ended the night.
“I want you all to know that I don’t get honored,” he said at the Hollywood Palladium as singers, rappers, producers, songwriters, label executives and other industry players cheered him on. “Where I’m from, New Orleans, you’re not supposed to do this.”
“I walked into my mama’s room when I was 14. She asked me for a kid because my dad was killed. And her son had just blown up and went on his first tour. When I came home she said, ‘Son, I can’t live in this house by myself.

Vertical Entertainment has landed North American rights to “The Doc,” a documentary about a rap legend whose life and career was upended after a near-fatal accident.
The Doc, a hip-hop lyricist and producer who wrote for Nwa and Dr. Dre, was involved in a 1989 car crash that took his voice. “The Doc,” directed Dave Caplan, picks up 30 years later as he considers a dangerous experimental surgery that could restore his vocal cords.
Vertical will release the movie in theaters in the spring of 2023, following its world premiere at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
“The Doc is an incredible talent and visionary who helped usher the hip-hop movement into mainstream America,” Peter Jarowey, a partner at Vertical, said in a statement. “As his remarkable life is revealed on screen, it is like watching the history of hip-hop unfold before your very eyes as witnessed by industry legends who count him as a friend,...

Since its 2002 genesis, the Tribeca Film Festival has celebrated music to a degree uncommon in the film fest world, and the 2022 event gathering again includes a wide array of music-focused events, including not just documentaries and music-centric narrative features but music video premieres, artist conversations, and master classes.
The overlap between film and music is evident right from the start Wednesday night, when the festival will host the world premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s Netflix documentary, “Halftime.” The doc follows the singer’s evolution as an artist, from her performances onscreen and on stages around the world to her 2020 Super Bowl halftime show and beyond.
This year, the lineup will also incorporate songwriters and producers in conversation, including what will surely be a full house at the Beacon Theater for Taylor Swift as she shows and talks about her “All Too Well” short film. Also on deck for conversations are Pharrell Williams,...

With "Straight Outta Compton" such a massive success for Universal Pictures, rumors quickly followed that the studio has reportedly been considering another hip hop biopic film with one possibility being a project about the formation of Def Jam Recordings.
Deadline reports that Michael B. Jordan and Jonah Hill reportedly being eyed to play Def Jam co-founders Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin in the film but no deals are in place just yet.
If the film happens, it will be based on Simmons and Nelson George's 2002 book "Life and Def" which deals with the legendary hip hop label that defined rap in the 1980s and launched the careers of such artists as LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Epmd, Warren G., Nate Dogg and Jay-z.

The 90s. It was the height of gangster rap.
It was the era that transformed the touchy rivalry between Bad Boy and Death Row Records, in particular The Notorious B.I.G. (Christopher Wallace) and Tupac Shakur, into what media deemed the East Coast vs. West Coast rap war. Two camps that dominated rap, with the best lyricists of the time, had turned communities – that never met – against each other. Tragically, the violence surrounding that rivalry would ultimately result in the untimely deaths of both Wallace and Shakur.
No track really brings the rivalry to life like “NY 87.” It was an unreleased song from 2Pac, featuring Tha Dogg Pound, the duo consisting of Kurupt and Daz. The fiery lyrics literally stab at the heart of some of the more prominent East Coast rappers of the time, such as: The Notorious B.I.G., Jeru the Damaja, Mobb Deep and A Tribe Called Quest. Movie-watchers, and indeed consumers of media in general, soon learn to detect the subtle differences between British and American products. Readers of hardback books quickly find, as they run their fingers down the edges of a closed volume, that it is smooth for a British book, but often tree-bark rough for a Us one. Why? That's just the way it is.
In the cinema, there's an American quirk that has no British equivalent, or at least none I've detected. Watch the final credits roll on a Us film or TV show and you'll see it. Nicknames. Always. Two or three unknowns in this endless scroll of tiny lettering are allowed to have their nicknames solemnly recorded for posterity, as in Firstname "Nickname" Lastname. But it's only the lower rankers, the assistant key grips, the second transportation captains, the wardrobe technicians – never the really important people.
