When Toddy Haynes’s May December was released last year, it prompted a worldwide (or at least Twitter-wide) reckoning with the meaning of camp. There were furious debates as to the exact parameters of the term and which works fell within them. For Mothers’ Instinct, this matter becomes a kind of existential crisis, because celebrated cinematographer Benoît Delhomme’s 1960s-set directorial debut can’t decide whether it wants to be considered camp or not, as it awkwardly pitches itself between a somber drama and antic melodrama.
Like May December, this remake of the Olivier Masset-Depasse’s 2018 film Duelles is a domestic drama that throws two women into the same space and steadily ratchets up the tension between them. Alice (Jessica Chastain) and Céline (Anne Hathaway) live in neighboring homes in the suburbs. Alice’s son Theo (Eamon Patrick O’Connell) and Céline’s son Max (Baylen D. Bielitz) are best friends,...

Esteemed cinematographer Benoît Delhomme’s credits have included a conspicuous number of thoughtful, visually sumptuous period pieces, such as The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Theory of Everything and Lady Chatterley’s Lover, as well as a few films made to promote fashion brands like Balmain, Dior and Chanel. In a way, that résumé partially explains why he might have been inclined to make his directorial debut with Mothers’ Instinct, for which he also serves as the Dp.
This pulpy, psychologically shallow and yet beautifully shot period thriller is all about two soignée suburban housewives — played by Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway — who spend the film’s 96 minutes suffering, scheming and losing their minds while wearing immaculate vintage-inspired costumes. Ultimately, the characters’ motivations, like their titular instinct, are weakly delineated, but viewers are well-advised not to worry their pretty little heads about any of that and just concentrate on the pantsuits.

"We need to separate the grief from the guilt." "What guilt, Alice?" Uh oh. Studiocanal has revealed the first official trailer for Mothers' Instinct, a tricky psychological thriller marking the feature directorial debut of French cinematographer Benoît Delhomme. The film is adapted from Barbara Abel's novel of the same name, and still doesn't have a confirmed release date, though it will be out sometime this year. Mothers' Instinct is a dark, twisty domestic thriller in which the bond between two couples—best friends and next-door neighbors—mutates in dangerous and deadly ways in the wake of a tragic accident. Alice and Celine live a traditional lifestyle with their husbands, and sons of the same age. Life's perfect harmony is suddenly shattered after a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion, paranoia combine to unravel their sisterly bond. Starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain as Celine and Alice, respectively, with Josh Charles, Anders Danielsen Lie,...

One film we’ve been waiting to see pop up on the fall festival circuit is Mothers’ Instinct, the directorial debut of acclaimed cinematographer Benoît Delhomme, who has worked with Tsai Ming-liang, Anton Corbijn, John Hillcoat, Julian Schnabel, Anthony Minghella, Tran Anh Hung, and more. Led by Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, the Greek distributor Spentzos Film has now unveiled the first trailer though the U.S. release from Neon has yet to be announced.
A remake of Olivier Masset-Depasse’s 2018 French-language psychological thriller, the Sarah Conradt-scripted film follows the friendship of two 1960s housewives that rapidly deteriorates after a tragedy. Also starring Josh Charles, Anders Danielsen Lie, and Caroline Lagerfelt, cinematography comes from, of course, Delhomme himself.
“Annie and I, we have a lot of fun in that movie. And it’s a throwback to another… I like to think of it like a little bit of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?...

Caroline Lagerfelt (“Sweet Magnolias”) has boarded Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway feature “Mothers’ Instinct,” Variety can exclusively reveal.
Lagerfelt will play Chastain’s mother-in-law in the psychological thriller, which tells the story of two women living next door to each other in an idyllic neighborhood in the 1960s. When a tragic accident occurs, it threatens to tear their friendship and families apart.
Based on Barbara Abel’s novel “Derrière la Haine,” the film is directed by Benoit Delhomme (“The Theory of Everything”) who also worked on a Belgian film adaptation of the book, “Duelles.”
Olivier Masset-Depasse directed the Belgian version.
Neon have picked up U.S. rights to the film, which has also sold wide internationally. Anton are repping international sales.
Lagerfelt has most recently appeared in “Sweet Magnolias” and “Law & Order: Organized Crime.” She also memorably starred as Serena’s grandmother in the original “Gossip Girl” series opposite Blake Lively.

"It's blood money." Vertical Entertainment has released the first official trailer for The God Committee, a new medical drama about doctors from filmmaker Austin Stark (The Runner). The film will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month before opening in select theaters starting in July. It follows a group of medical professionals who are forced to "play God," as they a part of a hospital committee that must decide which patients will receive necessary organ transplants. It begs many moral questions that nurses/doctors have dealt with over the past year, while also having a suspenseful plot that keeps you guessing through the end. The film features an excellent cast: Kelsey Grammer, Julia Stiles, Janeane Garofalo, Peter Y. Kim, Caroline Lagerfelt, Elizabeth Masucci, with Dan Hedaya and Colman Domingo. This looks like an utterly fascinating, impassioned film about the literal life-or-death decisions that doctors must make. Here's the...

Just in time for Halloween, the chilling new trailer for The Red Robin has arrived. The film stars Judd Hirsch, Ryan O'Nan (The Brooklyn Brothers Beat The Best), Jaime Ray Newman (Red Widow and Supernatural), C.S. Lee (Dexter), Caroline Lagerfelt (Gossip Girl), and Joseph Lyle Taylor. A hit at this year's Montreal World Film Festival, the film centers around an ill-fated family reunion where a famous psychiatrist (Judd Hirsch), who once did secretive work for the CIA, is accused of adopting his children so he could use them as guinea pigs for sinister experiments in mind control.

Hi folks: I'm not usually one for blatant self-promotion, but a feature I co-produced and helped develop over a number of years is premiering at the Montreal World Film Festival in August, and I'm very proud of it so you're getting a post. "Once Upon a Time" has found its Captain Hook. According to TVLine, Colin O’Donoghue will play the Peter Pan villain in Season 2 of the ABC drama.
Look for O'Donoghue to appear in Season 2's fourth episode. It might be safe to assume the role will be recurring, considering Captain Hook was featured in the Season 2 trailer. O'Donoghue's other credits include "The Rite" and "The Tudors."
O'Donoghue's Captain Hook will be stylish and will posses some old-school manners, but he'll be just as conniving as viewers familiar with the classic character have come to know him. Other Season 2 guest stars include Jamie Chung as Mulan and Sarah Bolger as Princess Aurora.

Tonight on Gossip Girl: Big Secrets and Billy Baldwin
Gossip Girl is a show that thrives on the secrets of its characters and this week is promising to be a humdinger in this department. One big secret got revealed last week when both the real and fake Charlotte Rhodes came face to face with the rest of the Rhodes family after Cece (Caroline Lagerfelt) was taken to the hospital. The repercussions of this are going to be magnified by the death of Cece who passed away by the end of the episode and things will become even more complicated when William van der Woodsen (guest star Billy Baldwin) returns tonight. So why is Serena's father back in town at this moment?
The motives for William's return are unclear but they are sure to be motivated by something more than concern for his family as he has Cece's will in his possession.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, here are some queries we are going to throw at you, from shows including House, Fringe, Castle and Glee!
1 | So now this Olivia on Fringe is into Peter, too? Man, Lincoln Lee just can’t catch a break, in any timeline. Meanwhile, Olivia’s bladder has the worst timing, doesn’t it? (Then again, using a truck-stop restroom, she probably got off easy with a simple abduction.)
2 | Assuming that August tampered with the Once Upon a Time storybook, wouldn’t Henry be quick to notice?...

Gossip Girl said goodbye to one of its own on Monday as Lily’s mom CeCe passed away after keeping her cancer hidden from the entire family, save for fake granddaughter Charlie/Ivy.
But CeCe’s portrayer Caroline Lagerfelt tells TVLine “there’s always a chance” she could return. After all, this is a sudsy primetime soap where anything is possible. “One of my [Twitter] fans said, ‘But that’s not CeCe. That’s her twin sister DeDe!’” the actress recalls with a laugh. “Flashbacks, ghosts, the twin sister DeDe – with Gossip Girl, you never know.”

Tonight on Gossip Girl: Friendship and Romance are Tested
The big moment of last week's Valentine's Day episode of Gossip Girl is one that divided fans and co-creator Josh Schwartz summed this up perfectly on his Twitter "According to gossip girl fans last night was the best/worst and they can't wait for next wk/will never watch again. Got it!" This reaction is indicative of how fans of either 'Chair' or 'Dair' are feeling with this story development and it will be intriguing to see where they will go from here.
There are complications not just because it would seem that Blair (Leighton Meester) has feelings for both Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Dan (Penn Badgley), but because Serena (Blake Lively) has also recently declared her love for her ex-boyfriend Dan. This creates tension between best friends Serena and Blair, especially as Serena walked in on the big Blair and Dan kiss last week.

The always lovable Judd Hirsch has done many things in his career since he was springboarded to stardom in the hit TV series "Taxi". Finally, though, he is getting to indulge his darker side ... which could spell very good things for genre fans.
According to Variety the producers of The Red Robin have tapped Hirsch, Ryan O'Nan, C.S. Lee, Jaime Ray Newman, Caroline Lagerfelt and Joseph Lyle Taylor to star in the psychological thriller.
Screenwriter Michael Z. Wechsler will direct and produce.
O'Nan, who starred in The Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best, will play the adopted adult son of Hirsch's character -- a famed psychiatrist specializing in trauma who was rumored to have done some confidential work for the CIA during the Cold War. A family reunion on the psychiatrist's death bed spirals into chaos when the father's accused of adopting his large family of children for the purposes of dark experiments in mind control.

Well, this past week's Thanksgiving themed Gossip Girl episode is one for the books. I had a hefty helping of lies, deceit, and intrigue and wanted to go back for seconds, thirds, fourths and then take a doggie bag home for later. So I have to ask: is Gossip Girl heading back to top form?
Slowly, but surely is my answer. Would love to hear yours after the recap!

We've already posted a promo and photos for the November 30th new episode of Gossip Girl, where Serena and Trip's flirtations lead to a very messy Thanksgiving dinner. Thanks theCW, we have two sneak peeks to share with you.
If you want to see more sneak peeks, check out E!Online (the first two videos are identical to ours, but the last two are new).
Thanksgiving On The Upper East Side — It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving on the Upper East Side if there wasn’t a serving or two of some major drama for the holiday. Blair (Leighton Meester) suspects her mom (guest star Margaret Colin) has been keeping a big secret from her, but it turns out to be something else entirely. Vanessa (Jessica Szohr) is supposed to spend Thanksgiving with her parents, but has a fight with her mom (guest star Gina Torres) and shows up on Dan’s (Penn Badgley) doorstep.

It's the annual Thanksgiving episode on Gossip Girl on November 30th. Everyone's put in awkward family situations (because what's a holiday with a family squabble?). TheCW has released promo photos and a synopsis for the episode.
CW's tentatively titled "Lily" will bring '80s heartthrob Andrew McCarthy into the small screen. According to sources, the 46-year-old actor will play the title character's dad in the upcoming CW "Gossip Girl" spin-off.
Sources confirmed to E! News that McCarthy, whose film credits include 1986's "Pretty in Pink" and 1987's "Mannequin," will play Rick Rhodes, Lily's dad and Serena van der Woodsen's grandfather.
He will be joined by "Lost" actress Cynthia Watros as CeCe Rhodes, the younger version of the mother, who is currently being played by Caroline Lagerfelt on the teen series.
Already onboard the show are Brittany Snow, who will play the title character; Shiloh Fernandez, who will play Owen, a possible love interest for Lily; and Krysten Ritter, Lily's wild-child older sister Carol.
