Laine is the only singer ever to have been Grammy-nominated in the
popular, classical and jazz categories.
She was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1979 Queen's Birthday Honours List and the DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1997 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to music.
She took her professional name from the character "Clio Dulaine" in Edna Ferber's novel "Saratoga Trunk". Years later she was to star in the
1971 London stage revival of "Show Boat", which is based on another of Ferber's novels.
