(See previous post: “Gay Pride Movie Series Comes to a Close: From Heterosexual Angst to Indonesian Coup.”) Ken Russell's Valentino (1977) is notable for starring ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev as silent era icon Rudolph Valentino, whose sexual orientation, despite countless gay rumors, seems to have been, according to the available evidence, heterosexual. (Valentino's supposed affair with fellow “Latin Lover” Ramon Novarro has no basis in reality.) The female cast is also impressive: Veteran Leslie Caron (Lili, Gigi) as stage and screen star Alla Nazimova, ex-The Mamas & the Papas singer Michelle Phillips as Valentino wife and Nazimova protégée Natacha Rambova, Felicity Kendal as screenwriter/producer June Mathis (The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse), and Carol Kane – lately of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame. Bob Fosse's Cabaret (1972) is notable as one of the greatest musicals ever made. As a 1930s Cabaret presenter – and the Spirit of Germany – Joel Grey was the year's Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner. Liza Minnelli...

The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office has initiated a probe of television's proliferating pay-to-play TV acting auditions, according to the Casting Society of America. In an email to its members July 15, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, the group noted that an investigator working for City Attorney Mike Feuer “has called several Casting Directors and Associates to talk about their participation in workshops. We have confirmed this with the Deputy City Attorney.” Mark Lambert, the deputy city attorney who’s long focused on the challenges posed by workshops (and played a role in drafting a California assembly bill passed by

Will SAG-AFTRA declare war on the Casting Society of America? Esai Morales hinted at a possible showdown with the casting directors’ organization if elected president in the union’s upcoming election. Morales jumped into the presidential race earlier this month but faces an uphill battle to unseat Ken Howard, currently SAG-AFTRA co-president with Roberta Reardon. In an interview with Backstage, Morales said SAG-AFTRA’s leadership has ignored the "abuse" suffered by background actors, who frequently pay steep fees for casting-director workshops."They make you pay to sit in a room with a bunch of other people to get close to a casting director, and there’s no guarantee of work," said Morales. As part of a "broad outreach program," Morales, a Los Angeles Local SAG-AFTRA board member, said he would pressure the Csa to better regulate casting director workshops and would coordinate with the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office on enforcement.

Andrew Boryski was arrested Wednesday by special agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations at the Los Angeles International Airport as he prepared to board a flight bound for Canada with a one-way ticket. Boryski, a Saskatchewan native, was charged with 32 misdemeanor counts, including three counts of grand theft, one count of practicing law without a license, and 28 counts of violating provisions of the Immigration Consultant Act. From building a future for the soap opera to preparing for union merger, the biggest stories of 2011 were about paving the way for 2012 (and beyond).5. Krekorian Act EnforcementIn 2010, the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office used the Krekorian Talent Scam Prevention Act primarily as a tool to regulate casting workshops (much to the chagrin of some in the casting community). But in 2011, things got real. In late July and early August, Deputy City Attorney Mark Lambert notched his first two convictions under the Krekorian Act, a 2009 California state law that he was a driving force behind. Just a few months earlier, Lambert's office had used the threat of prosecution under that law to pressure Central Casting into halting its long-standing practice of charging a $25 photo processing fee to actors applying for background work.Just one day after the City Attorney's Office sent a letter...

For a piece this week titled "Roses, O'Brien Cases Prove Krekorian Act Has Teeth," Back Stage asked talent manager Nicholas Roses, who pled no-contest to two misdemeanor criminal counts of violating California's Krekorian Talent Scam Prevention Act, to answer a series of questions via email. What follows is the unedited transcript of that interview. Also below is a letter sent to Roses by Los Angeles Deputy City Attorney Mark Lambert, which details the types of work Roses can legally engage in during his probation. It has been authenticated by Lambert, and is published here at Roses' request.Back Stage: What was your role in the actors boot camp described by the city attorney's office?Nicholas Roses: For the last few years I've run an annual boot camp and showcase. They were hosted by my company, Roses Entertainment Group. The purpose of the boot camp and showcase was to educate the clients that.

Studio City–based talent manager Nicholas Roses entered a no-contest plea last week to operating an advance-fee talent service that put several minors at risk of harm and to failing to file the proper $50,000 bond with California's labor commission. He was sentenced in Los Angeles Superior Court to three years of probation, during which time he is prohibited from taking part in any talent training, counseling, or listing service, including outside California, as well as from being involved with any educational, day care, or camp facility attended by minors.Roses was indicted in April and was prosecuted by Los Angeles Deputy City Attorney Mark Lambert on nine criminal charges for violating the Krekorian Talent Scam Prevention Act of 2009. The law specifically forbids talent services from charging money upfront in exchange for the promise of securing employment. It also requires such services post a $50,000 bond with the state of California...

There's a new development in that Los Angeles City Attorney's Office crackdown on Hollywood managers and agencies it believes are running afoul of the state's labor law, the Krekorian Talent Scam Prevention Act of 2009, which prohibits charging advance fees. Four talent managers have been accused of charging improper fees, the highest-profile one being Nick Roses. Now this week Roses, the one-time 21-year-old wunderkind talent manager based in Studio City, entered a no-contest plea to one count of operating an advance-fee talent representation service and one count of failing to file the proper $50,000 bond with the State Labor Commission. Judge Yolanda Orozco sentenced Roses to serve 90 days in jail or perform 45 days of Community Labor, and to 36 months probation. During that time, Roses is ordered to have no involvement with any talent training service, talent counseling service, or talent listing service anywhere, including outside the state of California. Roses also was...
