For France’s premiere film and television trade industry publication, it wasn’t a good look.
The cover photo of the Sept. 30 issue of Le Film Français, a must-read for Gallic filmmakers, featured seven men — Pathé President Jérome Seydoux, surrounded by actors Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, François Civil and Pio Marmaï, and actor-directors Guillaume Canet and Danny Boon —under the headline “Objective: Reconquest.”
The backlash was immediate.
“No women, no diversity. Classy!” tweeted French actress Alexandra Lamy (You Choose!). Audrey Diwan, director of Venice Film Festival winner Happening, added ironically, “If we’re bothering you guys, just let us know.”
The magazine quickly apologized, but for many, the incident was illustrative of how far the French industry still has to go.

Film: "Cinderella"; Cast: Yolande Moreau, Alexandra Lamy, Isabelle Nanty, Antoine de Caunes and Michel Boujenah; Director: Pascal Herold; Rating: *
This 3D animated "Cinderella" story is a far cry from the original classic, written by Charles Perrault in 'Histoires ou contes du temps passe"or by Brothers Grimm in their folk tale collection "Grimms' Fairy Tales". This animated film has a 'Western' flavour blended with fantasy.
In director Pascal Herold's version, the action takes place in a city named Felicity, a place very much like the Wild West. Here, a Red Indian Styled witch-doctor, Little Cloud, is substituted for.

Lucky Luke
Stars: Jean Dujardin, Michaël Youn, Sylvie Testud, Daniel Prévost, Alexandra Lamy | Written by James Huth , Sonja Shillito, Jean Dujardin | Directed by James Huth
First released in 2009, French spoof Western Lucky Luke is being re-released, presumably to capitalise on the newfound fame of Jean Dujardin, the Oscar-winning star of The Artist (the same trick was played with Cash). Lucky Luke is based on the popular Gallic comic strip of the same name (which once shared a writer with Asterix) and features Dujardin as the titular hero, a cowboy with outrageous shooting skills who is tasked by the President with purging his birthplace of Daisy Town of the various outlaws and bad guys that thrive there. Short of Blazing Saddles, the best-forgotten Wild Wild West and that episode of Red Dwarf, the Western is a genre that seems poorly served by affectionate parody; Lucky Luke is a welcome addition to this slight canon.

When you take a look at the ten films selected for the 51st Semaine de la Critique at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival don't be surprised if you don't recognize any of the directors' names. Nine the ten are first time feature directors with only Sandrine Bonnaire working on his sophomore effort with the William Hurt-led J'enrage de son absence. Serving as the opening feature will be UK director Rufus Norris's Broken. The film stars Tim Roth (2012 Cannes Un Certain Regard jury president) and Cillian Murphy and was adapted from Daniel Clay's novel of the same title, which centers on a young girl whose life changes after she witnesses a brutal attack. Additional information on the rest of the selection is hard to come by, though Bonnaire and Alice Winocour do give the fest a pair of films from female directors. Of the two, Bonnaire's J'enrage de son...

Taylor Kitsch in Disney's John Carter Mars Movie Directed by Wall-e's Andrew Stanton, and starring Taylor Kitsch in the title role, Disney's $250 million-budgeted sci-fi/adventure John Carter opened on Wednesday in France. Though by far the biggest new release that day, John Carter sold a relatively modest 66,583 tickets at 505 sites according to Cbo-Box Office — placing it in the sixth slot among the year's top opening-day movies, smack between Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar, starring the internationally popular Leonardo DiCaprio, and the 3D adventure Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which stars Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, and Vanessa Hudgens. According to France Soir, John Carter doesn't have much time to continue its box-office dominance among the new releases in France. His Best Actor competition consisted of Demián Bichir for Chris Weitz's A Better Life, Gary Oldman for Tomas Alfredson's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, George Clooney for Alexander Payne's The Descendants, and Brad Pitt for Moneyball. In the past year, in addition to the Oscar Dujardin took home three major Best Actor awards: the BAFTA, the SAG Award, and the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy/Musical. Best Actor Jean Dujardin kisses wife Alexandra Lamy Jean Dujardin, 2012 Best Actor Oscar winner for his performance as a fading silent-film star in Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist, kisses wife Alexandra Lamy at the post-Oscar ceremony Governors Ball on Feb. 26, 2012. Dujardin found fame after co-starring with Lamy on the television series Un gars, une fille ("A guy, a Girl"). (Photo: © A.M.P.A.S.) Dujardin not only became the first Frenchman to win an Oscar in the acting categories, but he also became the first Oscar winner (on record, at least) to say the French equivalent of the exclamation (not the verb) fuck! – putain!. Perhaps because most Americans wouldn't know the difference between putain, pute ("whore"), or the English verb "to put," ABC didn't bother bleeping or muting Dujardin's, huh, exuberance. (Last year's Best Supporting Actress winner Melissa Leo is the first person on record to say some variation...

Jean Dujardin/The Players: World Trade Center Joke Cut. [Photo: Marion Cotillard.] Also, in his piece Berretta mentions Marion Cotillard, who angered some after telling Paris Première that she questioned the official story about the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Some publicity-hungry Christian pastor may have demanded that the Academy take back Cotillard's Best Actress Academy Award for La Vie en Rose, but the actress not only has kept her Oscar statuette but continues to be cast in major Hollywood films, e.g., Rob Marshall's Nine, Steven Soderbergh's Contagion, Christopher Nolan's Inception and the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises. As per The Hollywood Reporter, which recently reviewed The Players, the latest Jean Dujardin comedy "is only as sustainable as its outlandish premise, and it eventually plays out like only an above-average addition to French cinema's long-standing fling with unfaithfulness." The Players' directors are Dujardin, Gilles Lellouche, Emmanuelle Bercot, Fred Cavayé, Alexandre Courtes,...

After winning the most prestigious award for acting in Hollywood this past Sunday, Jean Dujardin is heading back to his comedic roots for a new project. THR has informed us that he may be returning to France to team up with the comedy troupe that helped kick start his career in the upcoming film, Le Petit Joueur.
Joucla and Dujardin were once members of the sketch comedy troupe Nous C Nous, with Bruno Salomone, Eric Massot and Eric Collado, who will all join the recent Oscar winner for the project. Dujardin‘s real wife, Alexandra Lamy and her sister Audrey, along with Shirley Bousquet and Florence Foresti will be joining the comedic fun as well. Although the French media got wind of the project today, a rep for the film’s director, Manu Joucla, refused to give any details about the project.
