*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by director Jeffery Scott Lando. **there are major spoilers here. Director: Jeffery Scott Lando. Writers: Kevin Mosley. Cast: Ellen MacNevin, Sage Brocklebank, Kylee Bush and Chilton Crane. Suspension was part of the 8 Films to Die For film series. Launched in October of last year, Suspension is a slasher film, which takes a note from John Carpenter's Halloween (1978). This killer is very reminiscent of another - Michael Myers. Indie in nature, the cast is limited to a few high schoolers and production has been limited mostly to a single home. The film's ending is meant to wow! viewers, but it is weakly set up, by Kevin Mosley's script. Suspension is a fairly average slasher film and homage to Halloween. The film sticks with Emily (Ellen MacNevin) for most of the proceedings. She is an ostracized student, who is happier...

The 15th anniversary of what's considered ‘Canada's coolest film festival' is rapidly approaching. The 2015 Whistler Film Festival (Wff) will take place December 2 to 6 with new films, special guests, industry connections, great events and time to enjoy on of North America’s premiere mountain resort destinations. Wff has announced its first 18 confirmed films, plus industry and event programming highlights.
The Whistler Film Festival combines an international film competition with a focused industry Summit dedicated to the art and business of filmmaking in the digital age. Featuring over 80 innovative and original films from around the world and opportunities to connect with the people who made them, this year’s fest will be filled with a solid lineup of premieres, honored guests, lively celebrations, and unique industry initiatives.
Wff’s Director of Programming and industry veteran Paul Gratton had this to say about the 2015 lineup confirmed to date: “The Whistler Film Festival continues to be a must-attend event for hip, young, film buffs and emerging filmmakers, and we are pleased to carve out our own unique niche by offering an impressive selection of Canadian premieres. This year's titles cast a wide net in terms of subject matter, and our Summit will complement our film programming by addressing key challenges and opportunities facing the industry this year. WFF15 has something for everyone. "While our final line-up of titles is far from complete, early programming trends suggest a very strong year for female directors and innovative new voices from young directors hoping to find new ways of telling stories and connecting with audiences.”
A great example of innovation will be the World Premiere screening of Daniel Robinson's "Nestor," the first narrative feature ever made by one person, who wrote, produced, directed, edited and stars in this compelling tale of outdoor survival.
Another example of seeking out new narrative approaches, and leading this year's women directors present at Whistler, is Diy queen Ingrid Veninger’s latest "He Hated Pigeons" about a young man pushed to the border of sanity as he steps into manhood. Shot in South America, the film is designed to support a spontaneous live score to be performed during the screening. In other words, each screening will evoke different responses depending on the approach taken by the live musicians accompanying the showing. Other female directed highlights coming to Whistler include the World Premiere of Vancouver filmmaker Melanie Jones' "Fsm," a contemporary study of a female DJ trying to find love in a world of technological innovation and all-night raves.
Continuing its love of quirky musicals, Wff will present the Western Canadian premiere of Jude Klassen’s debut feature film "Love in the Sixth," an unromantic musical comedy of “enviromantic” angst. Another Canadian Premiere is Valerie Weiss' "A Lights Beneath Their Feet," a superb study of the mutually dependent relationship between a young student hoping to leave home for college and her bipolar mother who can't cope with the thought of letting her go. Taryn Manning, Maddie Hasson and Madison Davenport lead the cast. Another moving look at mother/daughter relationships can be found in the World Premiere of Siobhan Devine’s "The Birdwatcher," a family drama about a mother and daughter reconnecting starring WFF14 Rising Star Camille Sullivan and Gabrielle Rose.
Jeremy Lalonde's "How to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town," featuring Lauren Holly and Katharine Isabelle; and Sergio Navarretta's "The Colossal Failure of the Modern Relationship," set during a mouth-watering winetasting tour of the Niagara region; focus on the challenge of maintaining interpersonal relationships. Darker still is the Canadian Premiere of Josh Hope's "The Life and Death of an Unhappily Married Man," in which a disillusioned young man decides to visit his past to see where it all went wrong. Brian Stockton's "The Sabbatical" is a comedic look at a photography professor's mid-life crisis and a young artist who rekindles the lost spirit of his youth, and Matthew Yim's "Basic Human Needs" follows a young couple whose plans to get out of Regina are thwarted by a missing prophylactic.
BC's own Fred Ewanuick stars as a man who can see two minutes into the future in Vancouver filmmaker O. Corbin Saleken's first feature "Patterson's Wager."
BC based genre specialist Jeffery Lando will be gracing the late night screens with the Western Canadian Premiere of his latest horror work "Suspension." John Ainslie will be unveiling the World premiere of his tense psychological thriller "The Sublet," about a new mother unraveling psychologically after and she and her fiance move into a sublet apartment, featuring Vancouver actress Tianna Nori in the lead.
On the documentary front, Wff will be presenting the North American premiere of Jan Foukal's "Amerika," a lyrical look at a unique Eastern European phenomenon known as 'tramping', as Vancouver-based Barbara Adler takes us on a mission into the mountains and the forests of the Czech Republic where she encounters social dropouts who choose to live what they consider to be a North American back-to-the-wilderness lifestyle. "Last Harvest," from director Jane Hui Wang, is a Canadian documentary feature that looks at an elderly Chinese couple forced to relocate by the government to make way for a mammoth water diversion project. Also, on the international front, Whistler is proud to present the Canadian Premiere of "Blood Cells" by Joseph Bull and Luke Seomore about a lost man wandering through the British countryside, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
As always, Whistler is pleased to feature the best of Quebec cinema, and this year the festival has two titles already lined up. Bernard Emond's "Diary of an Old Man" is a deeply moving adaptation of an Anton Chekov story about an old man fighting feelings of bitterness despite his privileged life as an academic, starring Paul Savoie in a Canada Screen Awards worthy performance. Finally, a haunting look at childhood innocence, at risk from the evils of an outside world is Philippe Lesage's "The Demons" starring Pascale Bussières and Laurent Lucas, about a tight-knit small-town community beset by a child serial killer.
Celebrating its 12th edition in 2015, Wff’s coveted Borsos Award for Best Canadian Feature honors independent vision, original directorial style and the diversity of talent found in Canadian independent film. New for 2015, all Canadian feature films in the festival with Western Canadian premiere status will be included in the Borsos Competition and there is no longer a six film restriction to the number that can compete. An international jury of three will decide on four awards including a $15,000 Cdn prize.
Wff’s slate of special events confirmed to date include the Opening and Closing Galas, Signature Series including the Pandora Tribute and Variety 10 Screenwriters to Watch In Conversation, ShortWork Showdown, Awards Brunch and a grand15th Anniversary Celebration, with more to come.
New for 2015, Wff introduces the L’Oreal Mens Expert Bobsleigh Race on December 3 at the Whistler Sliding Centre, one of the fastest tracks in the world, where celebrities, filmmakers, VIP guests and corporate teams will experience the thrill of a lifetime reaching speeds up to 125 km per hour. And the adrenaline continues to flow with Wff’s annual Columbia Celebrity Challenge on December 5, with corporate teams and festival guests joining the stars of the screen and the stars of the slopes in a fun, guess your time, dual slalom race on Whistler Mountain. Proceeds from these fun-raising” events will support Wff’s annual programs for Canadian artists, including the industry initiatives, labs and festival.
Film meets music at Wff’s Music Café, which has expanded to two days to include an evening showcase on December 4, and daytime showcase and dedicated industry panel on December 5, with the possibility of additional performances during the festival. Up to 10 export-ready British Columbia songwriters and artists from across the musical spectrum will be selected to each play a live 20-minute set and meet with key international music and film executives and delegates attending the festival.
Wff's Industry Summit will feature three concentrated days of business programs and networking that address the business and future of Canadian film, locally and in the international marketplace, as well as the ever-changing landscape of filmmaking in the digital age. Featuring over 20 interactive sessions, Wff's Summit is designed to provide practical business and creative intel, and foster business collaborations for filmmakers and deal-makers. Offering in-depth conversations, lively debates and critical insight into a broad range of issues vital to the domestic and international film communities while addressing crossing borders and platforms, Whistler is the place to be, connect and deal this December. 1,000 delegates are expected to attend.
The Whistler Summit directly connects to Wff’s slate of project development programs designed to provide creative and business immersion experiences for Canadian artists including the Feature Project Lab, Praxis Screenwriters Lab, Aboriginal Filmmaker Fellowship and Music Café. Wff also collaborates with several industry organizations by hosting specific third party initiatives at the Whistler Summit including the Variety 10 Screenwriters to Watch, Women in the Directors Chair Industry Immersion, Women in Film & Television Film Market Preparation Mentorship, and the Mppia Short Film Award Pitch with the Motion Picture Production Industry Association and Creative BC. Application details and information for all Wff industry and project development programs are available at whistlerfilmfestival.com.

It would seem I have a love/hate relationship with the work of director Jeffrey Lando. On the one hand he has helmed fantastic direct to DVD movies such as Insecticidal (yes I really rather enjoyed that – even if Lando himself has a little disdain for it on his official blog), but on the other he was the director on House of Bones, a film whose ending, at the time, frustrated me to no end. But that was five years ago and since then we’d had a slew of TV movies from Lando, including the superb Syfy channel horror movie Goblin: an underrated gem that didn’t really achieve the same dizzy heights of success as those “other” Syfy monster movies!

Suspended Reality Productions has completed Suspension. This slasher feature recently showed at the Phoenix Comic Con. And, the film will also be shown in Rome and Montreal, this Summer. In the film, Emily (Ellen MacNevin) has a passion for art. But, when her bloody artwork comes to life, people begin to wonder if she is responsible for murder. As well, the film's trailer was released last year. Horror fans can find a preview for the film's upcoming screenings here. More story details can be found in the trailer. However, Emily is bullied by her classmates. Then, her peers are targeted by a masked killer. The killer might be Emily's father, back from the dead! The trailer is a compelling one. It shows Emily and her black, white and red drawings. The clip also shows a masked figure and several dispatched victims. Fans of horror can preview all of the gore below.

Ghostquake was previously titled Haunted High. This film made its debut on the SyFy Network August 25th. Now, Signature Entertainment will repackage and distribute this title on DVD in the United Kingdom January 21st. The film follows a vengeful ghost of a former principal in a high school. Students are tormented by overflowing toilets, librarians are attacked by book shelf spritis and characters have to run up steep staircases to get away from supernatural forces! Only the janitor (Danny Trejo) can save the day. The film has received some fairly scathing reviews. Felix Vasquez Jr. says of the film's quality: "they [students] are all here to be about as moronic as possible in one of the least scary movies I've ever seen." Apparently, the classmates are simply fodder. Brian Collins at Horror Movie A Day is a little kinder when talking about the film's mood: "the tone is also strange, in...

*spoiler alert Director: Jeffery Scott Lando. Writer: David Reed. Cast: Eddie McClintock, Amy Bailey and Christian Hammerdorfer. SyFy Network must have decided that no tagline is required with a title like the Boogeyman. This latest offering does not really stand out from a line of films that includes a version from Stephen King and Stephen Kay. If one isn’t enough, apparently Kay’s version was interesting enough to spawn two more films. Just how one amorphous creature managed to spawn into a huge line of unrelated films is as perplexing as this latest incarnation. With what writer David Reed tries to do is to relate the legend of Cain and Abel, Adam and Eve’s first children, into the lore of what kinds of monsters can torment young adults if they do not behave. His tale does not instill the fear of God amongst the masses. When Sheriff Michael’s (Eddie McClintock) two sons,...

What kind of high school would you find Danny Trejo as a bad ass janitor, Charisma Carpenter as a sexy librarian, and M.C. Gainey as its headmaster? My kind of high school, that’s what. Too bad it’s haunted.
Haunted High is a new Syfy original starring major bad ass Danny Trejo, major babe Charisma Carpenter, and another bad ass not to be trifled with, “Lost” heavy M.C. Gainey.
Obviously, they are a little too old to be playing students. Key members of the student body will be played by Marc Donato of “Degrassi: Next Generation” and newcomer Jonathan Baron.
The Hollywood Reporter’s “Heat Vision” blog brings us word of the premise:
The story, by Paul A. Birkett and Anthony C. Ferrante, is set at the fictional Holloman Academy, a New England private school that is visited by a demonic dead headmaster (Gainey).
Baron is the headmasters grandson...

The gorgeous Charisma Carpenter ('Psychosis', 'The Expendables') and the not so gorgeous Danny Trejo ('Machete') are both lined up to join the new SyFy original project 'Haunted High'. The movie, being helmed by 'Thirst' director Jeffery Lando, sounds like a Disney channel family-film but we're hoping for a bit more edge. Carpenter (below) will be playing 'the sexy librarian' and Trejo will be the school's Janitor and 'kick-butt guardian'. So all-in-all its already peeking my interest! M.C. Gainey, Marc Donato and Jonathan Baron are all set to co-star. Check out the plot synopsis below....

Scream of the Banshee writer, Anthony Ferrante, is back with a new film, Haunted High . This one he co-wrote with Paul A. Birkett and is being directed for SyFy by Jeffrey Lando. Danny Trejo, M.C. Gainey, Charisma Carpenter and Jonathan Baron star. Gainey plays a demonic headmaster of Holloman Academy, a New England school. Baron plays the young man who must take him on in order to save the learning institution. Carpenter is a "sexy librarian" and Trejo will play a janitor (yikes). A limited theatrical run may happen before Haunted High hits SyFy.

There was once a time when SyFy movies were loudly mocked and derided. If you were caught watching something like "Mansquito," it was best if you just pretended to be really drunk and unable to find the remote. "What? Mansquito? I thought I was watching The Fly..." But nowadays, SyFy movies are hot property, and everyone thrills to the wonders of such fine productions as "Sharktopus." Even better, they're finally signing on some of our favorite badasses, like Danny Trejo and M.C. Gainey, who have just signed onto SyFy's "Haunted High." The plot of "Haunted High" is pretty obvious just from the title. It takes place at a posh New England private school called Holloman Academy. As bad luck would have it, the preppy place is cursed by a demonic headmaster (Gainey). It's up to the headmaster's grandson (played by newcomer Jonathan Baron) and the school bad boy (Marc Donato...

If you’ve seen one small town under supernatural siege, you’ve seen them all – or maybe not. As you watch, Raul Inglis’ Goblin screenplay tips the hat to every conceivable cliché. Inglis, who once wrote for 1994 TV-series ReBoot (props in this writer’s book), has made a career out of writing low budget scare flicks and thrillers, as well as directing several films and television episodes, including the upcoming Salesmen, which lists a “rumored” cast of Jeff Goldblum, Ben Kinglsey, Zack Braff, and William H. Macy, among others. There’s no such notable cast teaming with director Jeffery Scott Lando to deliver this film, a by-the-numbers schlocky horror affair that sees everyone phoning it in.
The most familiar face of cast is one Gil Bellows, who’s immortalized himself by playing Tommy in a little movie called Shawshank Redemption. It’s a small role, as you may recall, but...

Maple Pictures will release the Goblin on DVD July 26th. This feature originally showed on the SyFy network in 2010. Since then, Goblin has been called: "nothing fantastical" and "nothing frightening" (DVD Verdict). However, some fans might enjoy a story of a deformed child, curses and a whining step-child (DVD Verdict). You get your chance to throw a "deformed child into the inferno" (Maple) in just a couple weeks and the DVD artwork for Goblin is posted left.
The synopsis for Goblin is here:
"In 1831, on the eve of Halloween, the villagers of Hollow Glen engage in an annual festival where they toss their diseased crops into a blazing fire, in hopes of blessing them with an abundant field for the next year. But when one couple takes the ritual too far and throws their sickly, deformed child into the inferno, their murderous action results in something far more horrific than they could have imagined.

Without a doubt my favorite holiday of the year is Halloween. Some people will argue over which is the best horror film of the season. This July 26th, Lionsgate will be releasing their own Halloween horror tale entitled, Goblin onto DVD. The flick is directed by Jeffery Scott Lando, and it stars…...

Everyone has their Halloween traditions. Some people decorate their homes. Others throw lavish parties. And some? Some people like tossing hideously deformed children into raging bonfires. Those folks know how to party, man!

So the day has come for you folks to take home Costas Mandylor in the final chapter of the phenomenon that is Saw! Well, at least until the inevitable reboot. Even cooler...if the jolly red-suited fatman brought you a 3D television last month, you can watch this puppy in its gory 3D glory, too.
Another franchise that is buzzing this week is the video game sequel, Dead Space 2. In addition to the game itself, you can also bring home the collector's edition, the album soundtrack, a hardcover game guide, and an animated DVD movie. That should keep you busy for a while.
Oh yeah, there are a couple of other interesting titles with some familiar faces from "True Blood", "Angel", "Buffy", and even "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman".

If Syfy keeps a list of monsters of myth, legend, and cryptozoology, after this weekend they can scratch "goblin" off the list. The new Syfy creature feature Goblin is set at Halloween time, so what better time for Syfy to premiere it than in the middle of July; this Saturday night at 9/8 Central.
A murderous, baby-stealing goblin comes to life on Halloween, setting his sights on an unsuspecting family. The teenage daughter must stop the goblin from stealing her baby brother before he becomes part of a goblinesque smorgasboard!
Goblin stars Gil Bellows of "Ally McBeal" and Donnelly Rhodes and Camille Sullivan, both of "Battlestar Galactica". Jeffery Scott Lando (Decoys 2: The Second Seduction, House of Bones, Thirst) directs from a script by Raul Inglis (Syfy's Sand Serpents and Cerberus).

The film was released on this format June 22nd and this film stars the very recognizable Lacey Chabert ("Party of Five"). Chabert is no longer an awkward adolescent, but a full grown women as the first scene suggests. Thirst is an important entry in the survivalist horror genre for showing the brutality of California's desert. Have a look at this clip inside until the film releases on DVD June 22nd.

Foy first told us about Jeffery Lando's House of Bones, in which the lovely Charisma Carpenter plays a ghost hunter, back in December of 2008, and finally this weekend it debuts on Syfy. In addition, the indie filmmaker who hails from Vancouver has two other Canadian premieres happening within the next few days.
But first here's what Lando has to say about House of Bones:
"[It's] a fun horror film where the cast and crew of a Ghost Hunter reality show get trapped in a house that really Is haunted. This is the movie I directed in Louisiana a year ago with a gang of wildmen genre filmmakers from La. It begins airing this Saturday (the 16th) at 9 Pm (8 Central)." Here's a sneak peek courtesy of Syfy:
Next, screenwriter Kevin Mosley set up a benefit screening of Lando's feature debut, Savage Island (starring Don S. Davis, Winston Rekert, Brendan Beiser, Kristina Copeland), for this coming Tuesday,...

I've never been much of a fan of all those ghost hunting shows but if more ghost hunters looked like Charisma Carpenter I might start tuning in. Until that day arrives I'll have to settle for House of Bones, in which the former "Buffy"/"Angel"/"Charmed"/"Veronica Mars" starlet will play a ghost hunter getting more than she bargained for.
Corin Nemec (Mansquito, SS Doomtrooper) co-stars alongside Carpenter as TV ghost hunters that enter a reportedly haunted house that may prove to be the death of them. Produced by Leigh Scott (Transmorphers), Griff Furst (100 Million BC), and Ken Badish (Showdown at Area 51) under the Louisiana-based Bullet Films banner, directing duties for this paranormal scarefest fall to Jeffrey Lando, he of Decoys 2 and Insecticidal fame.
Look for House of Bones to premiere on the Sci-Fi Channel sometime in 2009.
