Melissa Etheridge reflected on the systemic challenges women have faced in the music industry for decades — and how her own queerness protected her, in a way — in a new foreword for Tunecore’s annual report, “Be the Change: Gender Equity in Music,” released March 8 to coincide with International Women’s Day.
In the short essay, Etheridge spoke about the ways the music industry boys’ club has long cast a shadow on the “decades of music defined by incredible women dominating the chart.” Amidst those more public-facing successes, she argued, many...

Celebrities are taking to social media to pay tribute to actor Paul Reubens, best known for creating and starring as the beloved comedy character Pee-wee Herman. He died Sunday night at the age of 70 after a private battle with cancer. His career spanned from the stage to the screen, and he starred as Pee-wee in multiple films in addition to the children’s television series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.”
Tim Burton, who directed the 1985 cult favorite “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” paid homage to Reubens on Instagram, sharing a photo of the two of them together and writing, “Shocked and saddened. I’ll never forget how Paul helped me at the beginning of my career. It would not have happened without his support. He was a great artist. I’ll miss him.”

Sad news hit this morning that Tony Bennett has died following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. The legendary crooner had one of the longest careers in the history of popular music. His debut LP, Because of You, landed in 1952, and he worked steadily in the studio and on the road until 2021.
Fans who came of age in the Fifties will likely remember early hits like “Cold, Cold Heart,” ” Rags to Riches,” and “Strangers in Paradise.” Children of the Sixties are more likely to think of songs like “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,...

Tony Bennett, the treasured American storyteller, singer and showman whose joyful impact on the pop and jazz landscape spanned 70 years and stretched from Queens to San Francisco and all around the world, died Friday. He was 96.
Bennett died in his hometown of New York, his publicist Sylvia Weiner said. In February 2021, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease five years earlier, but he soldiered on, in the recording studio and on tour, rarely performing a song the same way twice.
He and Lady Gaga headlined two shows at New York’s Radio City Music Hall in August 2021, after which he announced he was canceling his fall tour.
On his Facebook page, it was noted Friday that Bennett was “still singing the other day at his piano, and his last song was ‘Because of You.'” That was his first No. 1 hit.

Barry Humphries, the Australian entertainer whose gladioli-waving alter ego Dame Edna charmed and roasted celebrities, all with a Cheshire grin, outrageous eyewear, a “Hello, Possums!” greeting and a flurry of caustic wit, died Saturday. He was 89.
Humphries died at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney of complications from hip surgery, his family announced.
“He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit,” they said. “With over 70 years on the stage, he was an entertainer to his core, touring up until the last year of his life and planning more shows that will sadly never be.”
He portrayed Dame Edna Everage — whom he called a “gauche, garrulous Melbourne housewife with a very shrill voice who was obsessed with interior decoration” — for more than six decades across cabarets, clubs, stage and screen as one of the world’s oldest continual comic creations.

“It’s Only Life After All,” a documentary about the folk-rock duo Indigo Girls, is for fans only. For those who are not fans, and for those who only dimly remember their initial albums in the late 1980s and early 1990s, this Sundance Film Festival Opening Night entry is a rambling, unrevealing look at their lives and careers that director Alexandria Bombach allows to run over two hours without focusing her material.

Believe it or not, Diana Ross has never won a Grammy. The legendary diva who charted 12 #1 singles with The Supremes and six as a solo artist has been shut out by the Recording Academy despite 12 nominations between 1965 and 1983. She was, however, bestowed their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. Now, at the age of 78, Ross looks poised to win her first competitive Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Album (“Thank You”), but it’s no sure bet.
While Ross leads our combined Grammy odds, this category has rarely been won by a female artist. In fact, since being introduced in 1992, only three women have taken home the prize for solo efforts. The very first honor went to Natalie Cole for 1992’s “Unforgettable,” which went on to win Album of the Year. The other two ladies to be honored were Patti Page in 1999 for “Live at Carnegie Hall: The 50th Anniversary Concert” and Joni Mitchell...

As society progresses, we’ve seen increasing acceptance of queer artists in the music industry, particularly in the past decade. While there have always been queer artists making iconic music — from Tchaikovsky to Wendy Carlos to K.D. Lang — these past few years have shown a great influx in not only the number of out artists, but also explicitly queer themes in their music. As such, the Grammys, self-described as music’s biggest night, have also evolved in their treatment of LGBTQ+ artists. And 2022 could be a banner year.
The 2022 Grammys already mark an important milestone for queer musicians. For Record of the Year, three openly queer artists are nominated. Lady Gaga, who’s bisexual, is nominated for her joyous jazz collaboration “I Get A Kick Out Of You” with Tony Bennett. Brandi Carlile, a lesbian, is nominated once again in this category with “Right On Time,” following her Record of...

Minutes after the release of the Killers’ new album Imploding the Mirage, the band celebrated its arrival with a performance of “Blowback” on The Late Show.
While Brandon Flowers and company’s early-in-the-quarantine late-night TV performances saw them performing Imploding songs in their own bathroom and their recording studio, “Blowback” was somewhat of a return of normalcy for the band, who played the song together — yet kept social distance — from their concert stage.
The Killers previously debuted “Blowback” on CBS This Morning with a rendition from the band’s Utah studio.

Versatile film, avant-garde classical, jazz and pop composer Ennio Morricone died in a Rome hospital after falling and breaking his leg, his lawyer Giorgio Assumma announced, according to Variety. He was 91.
Known as “the Maestro,” Morricone is best known as the composer of the scores and themes of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, and his Academy Award winning soundtrack for Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. He also toured frequently, and expanded his sonic visions to reflect contemporary sounds. Besides his collaborations on the spaghetti Western films of Sergio Leone, Morricone composed for Bernardo Bertolucci, Dario Argento, Don Siegel, Brian De Palma, and John Carpenter. He composed for such diverse artists as Andrea Bocelli, Sting, k.d. lang, and Pet Shop Boys. Morricone never became fluent in English. When he won his 2007 honorary Oscar, his speech was translated by Clint Eastwood.

Yet despite its eclecticism — or rather, because of it — the music of “the Maestro,” as many called him, was unmistakably Morricone after the first few bars. Barbra Streisand has plenty of Grammys on her shelf — eight to be exact — but there is one award that has eluded her for decades: Best Traditional Pop Album. She has now been nominated for that award 12 times, but she hasn’t won it yet. That’s because Tony Bennett refuses to loosen his stranglehold on the category. Bennett has won almost half of all awards handed out in this category. Will he add to that haul this year?
Bennett has won Best Traditional Pop Album a whopping 13 times out of his 15 nominations over the 27-year history of the category, so he’s close to undefeated. And six of those victories were in head-to-head match-ups against Streisand. Bennett even won last year when he wasn’t technically nominated: the Grammys awarded “Tony Bennett Celebrates 90,” a compilation album celebrating his 90th birthday. Jason Isbell reinforced his status as the king of the Americana genre at the 2018 Americana Honors & Awards. The Alabama singer-songwriter won in three categories on the strength of his latest album The Nashville Sound, which was named Album of the Year. Isbell also triumphed in the Song of the Year race for his dissertation on the temporal nature of love, “If We Were Vampires,” and in the Duo/Group of the Year category, an award he shares with his hard-touring band the 400 Unit.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Pose” Episode 3, “Giving and Receiving.”]
Christmas has come early to “Pose.” In fact, it arrived in June for Sunday’s episode, titled “Giving and Receiving,” which follows the yuletide experiences of the families in three different homes: the House of Evangelista, the House of Abundance, and the Bowes’ household.
Christmas movies, episodes, and TV specials have become a genre unto themselves, often appealing to non-Christian and secular viewers. While “Pose” may offer a more unique point of view to audiences unfamiliar with the ‘80s ballroom culture, its storytelling often falls into conventional patterns and tropes, and its Christmas episode is no different.
Series producer Our Lady J wrote “Giving and Receiving” with Janet Mock. “Beyond all of the glamour and glitz of the ballroom scene, ‘Pose’ is about family, and what better way to celebrate a TV family than a very special Christmas episode,” said Our Lady J to IndieWire.

“I guess what I'm trying to say is...I did get the joke about the toaster oven.”
It’s been 20 years since Ellen Morgan, the former TV alter ego of Ellen DeGeneres, said that famous line in “The Puppy Episode,” when it first aired on April 30, 1997. Of course, this precluded her infamous declaration, “I’m gay,” to the people waiting to depart on flight 316 to Pittsburgh. In the hall of fame, alongside the Mash series finale and this year’s Oscars broadcast, sits an episode of Ellen we now remember as a groundbreaking risk with a lasting impact on TV diversity.
Before starting the show’s fourth season, DeGeneres decided the time was right for her character to come out. More than just a creative decision for the series, it was also to coincide with her own announcement to the public. On April 14, the longtime stand-up comedian gave an interview to Time, appearing on the...

Attending the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar viewing party is sort of like going to the Golden Globes — while the Academy Awards are happening. Champagne is flowing, there are stars at every table and the TV people always are invited. So are supermodels (Gigi Hadid, Naomi Campbell), musicians (Bono, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Mariah Carey), athletes (Serena Williams, Johnny Weir), reality stars (Kardashians and Real Housewives), gay icons (RuPaul, George Takei, K.D. Lang) and designers (Donatella Versace, Christian Louboutin). Many are John's friends who walk the white carpet every year in support of the Elton John AIDS...

Taking the podium at the 2017 Hrc North Carolina Gala, the Westworld actress revealed, “Growing up, I thought that I was like every other girl who had a slight obsession with Jessica Rabbit, K.D. Lang and Melissa Etheridge. A girl who was more comfortable borrowing her brother’s baggy pants and backwards hats than putting on an Easter dress. Who would rather play in the mud than in makeup.”

During the 2016 presidential election celebrities found increasingly creative ways to show their support for Hillary Clinton. (Rihanna’s shirtception being the the most chill endorsement ever.) Now months after the election, stars are still standing by their candidate through cool fashion choices and even taking their support to the small screen. In one episode of Madam Secretary, Téa Leoni’s character Elizabeth McCord was spotted wearing a Hillary Clinton pendant necklace in just about every scene.

If you’re already holiday-ed out by the relentless music and family films recycling through your television, we have a little something strange to lift you out of the Santa insanity. A friend of all things weird, Pee-wee Herman wrote the 1988 episode "Christmas at Pee-wee's Playhouse," which opens innocently enough with a performance from the UCLA Mens Choir. Things grow increasingly surreal — as Pee-wee’s guest list might suggest. Where else will you find a grown man in an ill-fitting suit who hangs out with the likes of Dinah Shore, Joan Rivers, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Oprah, Whoopi Goldberg, Little Richard (on ice skates!), Charo, K.D. Wednesday (March 12) night's "American Idol" is officially called something like Soundtrack To Our Lives, which is what we're calling this year's permutation on the always-confusing Music From The Movies theme, in which singers go through contortions to justify performances from songs which, indeed, may have once popped up in a movie at some point. Several of the songs teased by "Idol" for tonight actually *do* seem to hail meaningfully from movies. I can't quibble with "Skyfall" or "Falling Slowly" or "Sound of Silence." The idea that "Sweet Home Alabama" fits the theme is a complete cheat but... That's how this goes! Click through and follow along! 8:01 p.m. I'm pretty sure that "Ocean's Eleven"-themed opening was produced by somebody who never watched either version of "Ocean." 8:02 p.m. More close-ups of the audience, please! I want to see all of the people who will be clapping off-the-beat tonight.

In the midst of "Glee's" fifth season, Jane Lynch graced the cover of Michgan Avenue magazine's December 2013 issue.
During her interview with the publication, the 53-year-old actress discussed her devotion to animals and compared Sue Sylvester to Miss Hannigan of "Annie."
Highlights from Miss Lynch's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to Michigan Avenue!
On her character Sue Sylvester:
"My recognition factor has gone up in terms of the public, so my life has changed in that way, for good and sometimes annoying. But creatively—playing the same character for nearly 100 episodes, I’m still enjoying it. There are moments when I’ll look at an episode and go, 'Oh come on, can’t I do something else other than destroy the Glee club?' Then of course they always give me something just stellar and fun, and this season I’m having the best time.

Lo and behold, the new poster for Thor: The Dark World has landed upon this terrestial plane and Entertainment Weekly has debuted it.
Marvel continues its tradition of Photoshop projectile vomit as pop art with this latest masterpiece, featuring quite possibly every single player sure to show up in Thor’s next adventure. If you look very carefully, there’s a Munchkin hanging from a tree back there somewhere.
Joking aside, apart from the extremely crammed ‘epic’ nature of the image, the poster at least teases at the vaster scope of this sequel, which will give Thor two women who can quarrel over him and two troublemakers who will likely scheme against him. At the center, looking appropriately stoic is Chris Hemsworth in all his swaggering glory.
The gals are Natalie Portman’s returning astrophysicist and Jamie Alexander’s Sif, a warrior-princess who’s got a little thing for the Thunder God.

If there is one thing How I Met Your Mother has become good at in its eight years of broadcast history, it’s how to properly spread things out. “P.S. I Love You” is the fourth time Himym has ventured into the “Robin Sparkles” era of Robin’s past. Some might think this is dipping in to the well a little too often, but considering how stretched out these episodes are its becomes more acceptable. The last time we visited Robin Sparkles was back in Season 6’s “Glitter,” and thank goodness we’ve had a two-year gap in between. It gave us enough time to mostly forget what a letdown that episode was. In terms of quality, “P.S. I Love You” is more in line with Season 3’s “Sandcastles in the Sand,” which is a comparison worthy of the highest praise – though we did get a surprisingly enjoyable callback to...

P.S. I Love You takes the Canada-extravaganza of How I Met Your Mother to a whole new level. The show consistently makes Canada jokes and references, so I didn’t think we’d see an episode where the usual Canadian humor would be put to shame, but tonight definitely did just that.
The episode features jokes about Tim Horton’s and donuts throughout, constant references to the politeness of the residents of the great white north, and even appearances by basically every Canadian star of the 90s imaginable. I mean we had K.D. Lang, Jason Priestley, Alex Trebek, Paul Shaffer, Steven Page, Luc Robitaille, Geddy Lee, and Dave Coulier. Who more could you want?
The catalyst to the Canadian onslaught is a discussion about stalkers, and whether someone has to be a total nut to become obsessed. Ted likes to reference the Dobler/Dahmer Theory, which says that whether a...
